Abstract:A matrix over ring with identity has the consecutive-column (CC) property if for all k, all its relevant submatrices having k consecutive rows and the first k columns are invertible. Similarly, the consecutive-row (CR) is defined. In this paper, we show that a arbitrary m x n matrix has both CC and CR properties if and only if it admits a certain factorization with bidiagonal-type factors (with invertible entries). This factorization is unique. We also show that there is a mutual 1 - 1 relations between the matrices having CC and CR properties and this certain factorization with bidiagonal-type factors (with invertible entries). This bidiagonal factorization has important applications in computer aided geometry design, electrical network and many other fields.

Abstract:A matrix is strictly totally positive (resp. totally positive) if all its minors are positive (resp. nonnegative). These two classes matrices have important applications in information science. First, we introduce the Neville factorizations of n x n strictly totally positive matrices as a product of bidiagonal totally positive matrices, and then obtain the planar network representation of the bidiagonal factorizations of strictly totally positive matrices.

Abstract:In this paper an improvement is obtained of Hadamard's inequality for totally nonnegative matrices: If A = (a(ij)) is an n X n totally nonnegative matrix with a11a22 ... a(nn) not-equal 0, then[GRAPHICS]and the inequality is a strict one when A is totally positive and n greater-than-or-equal-to 3. Then we prove that for an n X n totally nonnegative matrix A, det A = a11a22 ... a(nn) if and only if each diagonal product, except the main diagonal product, of A has a zero entry on it.

Abstract:Identifying discrete patterns in binary data is an important dimensionality reduction tool in machine learning and data mining. In this paper, we consider the problem of low-rank binary matrix factorisation (BMF) under Boolean arithmetic. Due to the hardness of this problem, most previous attempts rely on heuristic techniques. We formulate the problem as a mixed integer linear program and use a large scale optimisation technique of column generation to solve it without the need of heuristic pattern mining. Our approach focuses on accuracy and on the provision of optimality guarantees. Experimental results on real world datasets demonstrate that our proposed method is effective at producing highly accurate factorisations and improves on the previously available best known results for 15 out of 24 problem instances.

Factorisation of symmetric matrices and applications in gravitational theories

Abstract:We consider the canonical Wiener-Hopf factorisation of $2 \times 2$ symmetric matrices $\mathcal M$ with respect to a contour $\Gamma$. For the case that the quotient $q$ of the two diagonal elements of $\mathcal M$ is a rational function, we show that due to the symmetric nature of the matrix $\mathcal M$, the second column in each of the two matrix factors that arise in the factorisation is determined in terms of the first column in each of these matrix factors, by multiplication by a rational matrix, and we give a method for determining the second columns of these factors. We illustrate our method with two examples in the context of a Riemann-Hilbert approach to obtaining solutions to the Einstein field equations.

Abstract:A problem by Feichtinger, Heil, and Larson asks whether a positive-definite integral operator with $M_1$ kernel admits a symmetric rank-one decomposition which is strongly square-summable with respect to the $M_1$ norm. In conjunction with a concurrent result by Bandeira-Mixon-Steinerberger, we provide a negative answer to the problem and study special cases where such factorization is possible. We also discuss an application of the results to the semidefinite relaxation of a quadratic program.

Abstract:If $A$ is an n-by-n matrix over a field $F$ ($A\in M_{n}(F)$), then $A$ is said to ``have an LU factorization'' if there exists a lower triangular matrix $L\in M_{n}(F)$ and an upper triangular matrix $U\in M_{n}(F)$ such that $$A=LU.$$ We give necessary and sufficient conditions for LU factorability of a matrix. Also simple algorithm for computing an LU factorization is given. It is an extension of the Gaussian elimination algorithm to the case of not necessarily invertible matrices. We consider possibilities to factors a matrix that does not have an LU factorization as the product of an ``almost lower triangular'' matrix and an ``almost upper triangular'' matrix. There are many ways to formalize what almost means. We consider some of them and derive necessary and sufficient conditions. Also simple algorithms for computing of an ``almost LU factorization'' are given.

Abstract:Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) has found numerous applications, due to its ability to provide interpretable decompositions. Perhaps surprisingly, existing results regarding its uniqueness properties are rather limited, and there is much room for improvement in terms of algorithms as well. Uniqueness aspects of NMF are revisited here from a geometrical point of view. Both symmetric and asymmetric NMF are considered, the former being tantamount to element-wise non-negative square-root factorization of positive semidefinite matrices. New uniqueness results are derived, e.g., it is shown that a sufficient condition for uniqueness is that the conic hull of the latent factors is a superset of a particular second-order cone. Checking this condition is shown to be NP-complete; yet this and other results offer insights on the role of latent sparsity in this context. On the computational side, a new algorithm for symmetric NMF is proposed, which is very different from existing ones. It alternates between Procrustes rotation and projection onto the non-negative orthant to find a non-negative matrix close to the span of the dominant subspace. Simulation results show promising performance with respect to the state-of-art. Finally, the new algorithm is applied to a clustering problem for co-authorship data, yielding meaningful and interpretable results.

Abstract:It is proved that for certain algebras of continuous functions on compact abelian groups, the set of factorable matrix functions with entries in the algebra is not dense in the group of invertible matrix functions with entries in the algebra, assuming that the dual abelian group contains a subgroup isomorphic to Z^3. These algebras include the algebra of all continuous functions and the Wiener algebra. More precisely, it is shown that infinitely many connected components of the group of invertible matrix functions do not contain any factorable matrix functions, again under the same assumption. Moreover, these components actually are disjoint with the subgroup generated by the triangularizable matrix functions.

Abstract:We propose a specific class of matrices which participate in factorization problems that turn to be equivalent to constant and entwining (non-constant) pentagon, reverse-pentagon or Yang-Baxter maps, expressed in non-commutative variables. In detail, we show that factorizations of order $N=2$ matrices of this specific class are equivalent to the homogeneous normalization map. From order $N=3$ matrices, we obtain an extension of the homogeneous normalization map, as well as novel entwining pentagon, reverse-pentagon and Yang-Baxter maps.

Abstract:This paper introduces an algorithm for the nonnegative matrix factorization-and-completion problem, which aims to find nonnegative low-rank matrices X and Y so that the product XY approximates a nonnegative data matrix M whose elements are partially known (to a certain accuracy). This problem aggregates two existing problems: (i) nonnegative matrix factorization where all entries of M are given, and (ii) low-rank matrix completion where nonnegativity is not required. By taking the advantages of both nonnegativity and low-rankness, one can generally obtain superior results than those of just using one of the two properties. We propose to solve the non-convex constrained least-squares problem using an algorithm based on the classical alternating direction augmented Lagrangian method. Preliminary convergence properties of the algorithm and numerical simulation results are presented. Compared to a recent algorithm for nonnegative matrix factorization, the proposed algorithm produces factorizations of similar quality using only about half of the matrix entries. On tasks of recovering incomplete grayscale and hyperspectral images, the proposed algorithm yields overall better qualities than those produced by two recent matrix-completion algorithms that do not exploit nonnegativity.
On Symmetric Factorizations of Hankel Matrices

Abstract:We present two conjectures regarding the running time of computing symmetric factorizations for a Hankel matrix $\mathbf{H}$ and its inverse $\mathbf{H}^{-1}$ as $\mathbf{B}\mathbf{B}^*$ under fixed-point arithmetic. If solved, these would result in a faster-than-matrix-multiplication algorithm for solving sparse poly-conditioned linear programming problems, a fundamental problem in optimization and theoretical computer science. To justify our proposed conjectures and running times, we show weaker results of computing decompositions of the form $\mathbf{B}\mathbf{B}^* - \mathbf{C}\mathbf{C}^*$ for Hankel matrices and their inverses with the same running time. In addition, to promote our conjectures further, we discuss the connections of Hankel matrices and their symmetric factorizations to sum-of-squares (SoS) decompositions of single-variable polynomials.

Abstract:Spectral factorization is a prominent tool with several important applications in various areas of applied science. Wiener and Masani proved the existence of matrix spectral factorization. Their theorem has been extended to the multivariable case by Helson and Lowdenslager. Solving the problem numerically is challenging in both situations, and also important due to its practical applications. Therefore, several authors have developed algorithms for factorization. The Janashia-Lagvilava algorithm is a relatively new method for matrix spectral factorization which has proved to be useful in several applications. In this paper, we extend this method to the multivariable case. Consequently, a new numerical algorithm for multivariable matrix spectral factorization is constructed.
