Abstract:We give the first example of a simply connected compact 5-manifold (Smale-Barden manifold) which admits a K-contact structure but does not admit any Sasakian structure, settling a long standing question of Boyer and Galicki.

Abstract:We introduce generalized almost contact structures which admit the $B$-field transformations on odd dimensional manifolds. We provide definition of generalized Sasakain structures from the view point of the generalized almost contact structures. We obtain a generalized Sasakian structure on a non-compact manifold which does not arise as a pair of ordinary Sasakian structures. However we show that a generalized Sasakian structure on compact 3-dimensional manifold is equivalent to a pair of Sasakian structures with the same metric. Finally we extend a definition of a generalized almost contact structure.

Abstract:The question of whether a Sasakian metric can admit an additional compatible (K-)contact structure is addressed. In the complete case if the second structure is also assumed Sasakian, works of Tachibana-Yu and Tanno show that the manifold must be 3-Sasakian or an odd dimensional sphere with constant curvature. Some extensions of this result are obtained, mainly in dimensions 3 and 5.

Lefschetz Contact Manifolds and Odd Dimensional Symplectic Geometry

Abstract:Recently, Cappelletti-Montano, De Nicola, and Yudin proved a Hard Lefschetz theorem for the De Rham cohomology of compact Sasakian manifolds, and proposed an associated notion of Lefschetz contact manifolds. Inspired by their work, we prove in this paper a Hard Lefschetz theorem for compact K-contact manifolds using the formalism of odd dimensional symplectic geometry. This result leads directly to a new, conceptually different proof of the above mentioned Hard Lefschetz theorem for Sasakian manifolds, and allows us to establish a sufficient and necessary condition for a finitely presentable group to be the fundamental group of a compact Lefschetz contact five manifold. We then use it to produce first examples of compact Lefschetz contact manifolds which do not support any Sasakian structures. To demonstrate the full strength of the Hard Lefschetz theorem for a Sasakian manifold, we also give a simple construction of simplyconnected K-contact manifolds without any Sasakian structures in any dimension ≥ 9. This in particular answers an open question asked by Boyer and late Galicki concerning the existence of such examples.

Abstract:The authors consider ±(Φ, J)-holomorphic maps from Sasakian manifolds into Kähler manifolds, which can be seen as counterparts of holomorphic maps in Kähler geometry. It is proved that those maps must be harmonic and basic. Then a Schwarz lemma for those maps is obtained. On the other hand, an invariant in its basic homotopic class is obtained. Moreover, the invariant is just held in the class of basic maps.

Abstract:In previous work (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2205.12067" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2205.12067">arXiv:2205.12067</a>), we defined a notion of a generalized Sasakian structure in the context of generalized contact geometry, the odd dimensional analogue of generalized complex geometry introduced by Hitchin and Gualtieri. We show here that k-contact manifolds are generalized Sasakian if and only if they are classically Sasakian. We show also that strictly pseudo-convex CR manifolds are always generalized Sasakian.

Abstract:We classify simply connected compact Sasaki manifolds of dimension 2n+1 with positive transverse bisectional curvature. In particular, the Kähler cone corresponding to such manifolds must be bi-holomorphic to Cn+1\{0}. As an application we recover the theorem of Mori and Siu–Yau on the Frankel conjecture and extend it to certain orbifold version. The main idea is to deform such Sasaki manifolds to the standard round sphere in two steps, both fixing the complex structure on the Kähler cone. First, we deform the metric along the Sasaki–Ricci flow and obtain a limit Sasaki–Ricci soliton with positive transverse bisectional curvature. Then by varying the Reeb vector field which essentially decreases the volume functional, we deform the Sasaki–Ricci soliton to a Sasaki–Einstein metric with positive transverse bisectional curvature, i.e. a round sphere. The second deformation is only possible when one treats simultaneously regular and irregular Sasaki manifolds, even if the manifold one starts with is regular (quasi-regular), i.e. Kähler manifolds (orbifolds).
Complex structures on the product of two Sasakian manifolds

Abstract:A Sasakian manifold is a Riemannian manifold whose metric cone admits a certain Kähler structure which behaves well under homotheties. We show that the product of two compact Sasakian manifolds admits a family of complex structures indexed by a complex nonreal parameter, none of whose members admits any compatible locally conformally Kähler metrics if both Sasakian manifolds are of dimension greater than $1$. We compare this family with another family of complex structures which has been studied in the literature. We compute the Dolbeault cohomology groups of these products of compact Sasakian manifolds.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a complex projective variety with only canonical singularities and with trivial canonical bundle. Let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. Assume that the pair $(X,L)$ is the flat limit of a family of smooth polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds. Assume that for each singular point $x \in X$ there exist a Kahler-Einstein Fano manifold $Z$ and a positive integer $q$ dividing $K_Z$ such that $-\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ is very ample and such that the germ $(X,x)$ is locally analytically isomorphic to a neighborhood of the vertex of the blow-down of the zero section of $\frac{1}{q}K_{Z}$. We prove that up to biholomorphism, the unique weak Ricci-flat Kahler metric representing $2\pi c_1(L)$ on $X$ is asymptotic at a polynomial rate near $x$ to the natural Ricci-flat Kahler cone metric on $\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ constructed using the Calabi ansatz. In particular, our result applies if $(X, \mathcal{O}(1))$ is a nodal quintic threefold in $\mathbb{P}^4$. This provides the first known examples of compact Ricci-flat manifolds with non-orbifold isolated conical singularities.
K-contact manifolds with minimal closed Reeb orbits

Abstract:We use the Boothby-Wang fibration to construct certain simply connected K-contact manifolds and we give sufficient and necessary conditions on when such K-contact manifolds are homeomorphic to the odd dimensional spheres. For the symplectic base manifold of the fibration which admits a Hamiltonian torus action, we show that the total space of the fibration admits other than the above K-contact structures whose closed Reeb orbits correspond exactly to the fixed points of the Hamiltonian circle action on the base manifold. Then we give a collection of examples of compact simply connected K-contact manifolds with minimal number of closed Reeb orbits which are not homeomorphic to the odd dimensional spheres, while having the real cohomology ring of the spheres. Finally, we give a family of examples of simply connected K-contact manifolds which have one more than the minimal number of closed Reeb orbits and which do not have the real cohomology ring of the spheres.

Abstract:This article is based on a talk at the RIEMain in Contact conference in Cagliari, Italy in honor of the 78th birthday of David Blair one of the founders of modern Riemannian contact geometry. The present article is a survey of a special type of Riemannian contact structure known as Sasakian geometry. An ultimate goal of this survey is to understand the moduli of classes of Sasakian structures as well as the moduli of extremal and constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics, and in particular the moduli of Sasaki-Einstein metrics.

Abstract:Using the Sasakian join construction with homology 3-spheres, we give a countably infinite number of examples of Sasakian manifolds with perfect fundamental group in all odd dimensions greater than 1. These have extremal Sasaki metrics with constant scalar curvature. Moreover, we present further examples of both Sasaki-Einstein and Sasaki-$\eta$-Einstein metrics.

Weak almost-contact metric manifolds, i.e., where the linear complex structure on the contact distribution is replaced by a nonsingular skew-symmetric tensor, have been defined by the author and R. Wolak. In this paper, we study a weak analogue of quasi-contact metric manifolds. Our main results generalize some well-known theorems and provide new criterions for K-contact and Sasakian manifolds in terms of conditions on the curvature tensor and other geometric objects associated with the weak quasi-contact metric structure.

Abstract:We prove some structure results for transversely reducible Sasaki manifolds. In particular, we show a Sasaki manifold with positive Ricci curvature is transversely irreducible, and so join (product) construction cannot be generalized to irregular Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, as opposed to the quasi-regular case done by Wang-Ziller and Boyer-Galicki. As an application, we classify compact Sasaki manifolds with nonnegative transverse bisectional curvature, which can be viewed as the generalized Frankel conjecture in Sasaki geometry.
A Weitzenböck formula on Sasakian holomorphic bundles

Abstract:This work seeks to advance the understanding of the smooth structure of the moduli space of self-dual contact instantons (SDCI) on Sasakian 7-manifolds M. A neighborhood of a smooth point of M is locally modeled on the first cohomological group of an elliptic complex (1.4). There is a cohomological obstruction to the smoothness for the moduli space, in terms of a second basic cohomological group, in this paper we study conditions under which this obstruction disappears, by computing a Weitzenböck formula and using a Bochner-type method to obtain a vanishing theorem. Given an SDCI on a Sasakian bundle E, we find sufficient conditions for the vanishing of the obstruction in the positivity of a couple of operators R and F depending on the curvatures of the connection and the Riemann curvature of the Sasakian metric g. In particular, we find that if M is transversely Ricci positive and F positive, the moduli space of SDCI must be smooth. However, in general, the operator F is not positive definite and we describe bundles over the Stiefel manifold for which it is the case. Finally, we show that when the energy of the curvature is less than the first non-zero eigenvalue of RicT the obstruction vanishes.

Abstract:All invariant contact metric structures on tangent sphere bundles of each compact rank-one symmetric space are obtained explicitly, distinguishing for the orthogonal case those that are K -contact, Sasakian or 3-Sasakian. Only the tangent sphere bundle of complex projective spaces admits 3-Sasakian metrics and there exists a unique orthogonal Sasakian-Einstein metric on Furthermore, there is a unique invariant contact metric that is Einstein, in fact Sasakian-Einstein, on tangent sphere bundles of spheres and real projective spaces. Each invariant contact metric, Sasakian, Sasakian-Einstein or 3-Sasakian structure on the unit tangent sphere of any compact rank-one symmetric space is extended, respectively, to an invariant almost Kähler, Kähler, Kähler Ricci-flat or hyperKähler structure on the punctured tangent bundle.

Abstract:It is well known that the product of two Sasakian manifolds carries a 2-parameter family of Hermitian structures . We show in this article that the complex structure is harmonic with respect to , i.e., it is a critical point of the Dirichlet energy functional. Furthermore, we also determine when these Hermitian structures are locally conformally Kähler, balanced, strong Kähler with torsion, Gauduchon or k -Gauduchon ( ). Finally, we study the Bismut connection associated to and we provide formulas for the Bismut-Ricci tensor and the Bismut-Ricci form . We show that these tensors vanish if and only if each Sasakian factor is -Einstein with appropriate constants and we also exhibit some examples fulfilling these conditions, thus providing new examples of Calabi-Yau with torsion manifolds.
