Abstract:Mosquitoes are responsible for the transmission of many diseases such as dengue fever, zika or chigungunya. One way to control the spread of these diseases is to use the sterile insect technique (SIT), which consists in a massive release of sterilized male mosquitoes. This strategy aims at reducing the total population over time, and has the advantage being specific to the targeted species, unlike the use of <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://pesticides.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> this article, we study the optimal release strategies in order to maximize the efficiency of this <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://technique.We" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> consider simplified models that describe the dynamics of eggs, males, females and sterile males in order to optimize the release protocol. We determine in a precise way optimal strategies, which allows us to tackle numerically the underlying optimization problem in a very simple way. We also present some numerical simulations to illustrate our results.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to improve the efficiency of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) by optimizing the release strategy in order to reduce the mosquito population. Specifically, the paper studies how to determine the optimal release plan of sterile male mosquitoes within a given time through optimal control theory, so as to minimize the required number of sterile male mosquitoes while achieving the predetermined wild mosquito population size. ### Background of the paper Mosquitoes are vectors for many diseases (such as dengue fever, Zika virus and chikungunya). Using the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is a method to control the spread of these diseases. This technique reduces the mosquito population by releasing a large number of sterile male mosquitoes. The advantage of this method is that it is specific to the target species and will not affect other organisms like pesticides. ### Research purpose The main purpose of the paper is to study how to optimize the release strategy of sterile male mosquitoes through mathematical modeling and optimal control theory to maximize the efficiency of SIT. Specifically, the authors consider simplified models that describe the dynamics of eggs, males, females and sterile males, and use these models to optimize the release protocol. ### Mathematical models Two models are used in the paper: 1. **Simplified model (S1)**: \[ \begin{cases} \frac{dF}{dt} = f(F, M_s) \\ \frac{dM_s}{dt} = u - \delta_s M_s \end{cases} \] where \( f(F, M_s) \) is a nonlinear function representing the change in the number of female mosquitoes, \( u \) is the release rate of sterile male mosquitoes, \( M_s \) is the number of sterile male mosquitoes, \( F \) is the number of fertilized female mosquitoes, and \( \delta_s \) is the mortality rate of sterile male mosquitoes. 2. **Complete model (S2)**: \[ \begin{cases} \frac{dE}{dt} = \beta_E F \left(1 - \frac{E}{K}\right) - (\nu_E + \delta_E) E \\ \frac{dM}{dt} = (1 - \nu) \nu_E E - \delta_M M \\ \frac{dF}{dt} = \nu \nu_E E \frac{M}{M + \gamma_s M_s} - \delta_F F \\ \frac{dM_s}{dt} = u - \delta_s M_s \end{cases} \] where \( E \) is the mosquito density in the aquatic stage, \( M \) is the density of adult male mosquitoes, \( F \) is the density of fertilized female mosquitoes, \( M_s \) is the density of sterile male mosquitoes, \( \beta_E \) is the egg - laying rate, \( \nu_E \) is the hatching rate, \( \delta_E\), \( \delta_M\), \( \delta_F\) and \( \delta_s \) are the mortality rates of eggs, adult males, females and sterile males respectively, \( \nu \) is the probability that pupae develop into females, \( K \) is the environmental capacity, and \( \gamma_s \) represents the preference of female mosquitoes for fertile males. ### Optimal control problems Two optimal control problems are defined in the paper: 1. **Problem (P(S1)_T,U,ε)**: \[ \inf_{u \in U(S1)_T,U,ε} J(u) \] where \( J(u)=\int_0^T u(t)dt\), representing the total number of sterile male mosquitoes released within time \( T \), and \( U(S1)_T,U,ε \) is the set of control functions satisfying \( 0\leq u\leq U \) and \( F(T)\leq ε \). 2. **Problem (P(S2)_T,U,ε)**
