Abstract:We show that if a non-degenerate PL map $f:N\to M$ lifts to a topological embedding in $M\times\mathbb R^k$ then it lifts to a PL embedding in there. We also show that if a stable smooth map $N^n\to M^m$, $m\ge n$, lifts to a topological embedding in $M\times\mathbb R$, then it lifts to a smooth embedding in there.

Abstract:Given a generic PL map or a generic smooth fold map $f:N^n\to M^m$, where $m\ge n$ and $2(m+k)\ge 3(n+1)$, we prove that $f$ lifts to a PL or smooth embedding $N\to M\times\mathbb R^k$ if and only if its double point locus $\{(x,y)\in N\times N\mid f(x)=f(y),\,x\ne y\}$ admits an equivariant map to $S^{k-1}$. As a corollary we answer a 1990 question of P. Petersen and obtain some other applications. We also discuss several criteria for lifting of a non-degenerate PL map or a $C^0$-stable smooth map $f:N^n\to M^m$, where $m\ge n$, to an embedding in $M\times\mathbb R$, elaborating on V. Poénaru's observations. In particular, the existence of such a lift is determined by the equivariant homotopy type of the diagram consisting of the three projections from the triple point locus $\{(x,y,z)\in N\times N\times N\mid f(x)=f(y)=f(z),\,x\ne y\ne z\ne x\}$ to the double point locus. The three Appendices, which can be read independently of the rest of the paper, are devoted to stable and generic maps. Appendix B introduces an elementary theory of stable PL maps. Appendix C extends the 2-multi-0-jet transversality theorem over the usual compactification of $M\times M\setminus\Delta_M$.

Simplifying generic smooth maps to the 2-sphere and to the plane

Abstract:We study how to construct explicit deformations of generic smooth maps from closed $n$--dimensional manifolds $M$ with $n \geq 4$ to the $2$--sphere $S^2$ and show that every smooth map $M \to S^2$ is homotopic to a $C^\infty$ stable map with at most one cusp point and with only folds of the middle absolute index. Furthermore, if $n$ is even, such a $C^\infty$ stable map can be so constructed that the restriction to the singular point set is a topological embedding. As a corollary, we show that for $n \geq 4$ even, there always exists a $C^\infty$ stable map $M \to \mathbb{R}^2$ with at most one cusp point such that the restriction to the singular point set is a topological embedding. As another corollary, we give a new proof to the existence of an open book structure on odd dimensional manifolds which extends a given one on the boundary, originally due to Quinn. Finally, using the open book structure thus constructed, we show that $k$--connected $n$--dimensional manifolds always admit a fold map into $\mathbb{R}^2$ without folds of absolute indices $i$ with $1 \leq i \leq k$, for $n \geq 7$ odd and $1 \leq k < (n-3)/2$.

Abstract:Let M be a PL 2-manifold and X be a compact subpolyhedron of M and let E(X, M) denote the space of embeddings of X into M with the compact-open topology. In this paper we study an extension property of embeddings of X into M and show that the restriction map from the homeomorphism group of M to E(X, M) is a principal bundle. As an application we show that if M is a Euclidean PL 2-manifold and dim X >= 1 then the triple (E(X,M), E^LIP(X,M), E^PL(X, M)) is an (s,Sigma,sigma)-manifold, where E_K^LIP(X,M) and E_K^PL(X, M) denote the subspaces of Lipschitz and PL embeddings.

Abstract:In our paper, we introduce special-generic-like maps or SGL maps as smooth maps and study their several algebraic topological and differential topological properties. The new class generalize the class of so-called special generic maps. Special generic maps are smooth maps which are locally projections or the product maps of Morse functions and the identity maps on disks. Morse functions with exactly two singular points on spheres or Morse functions in Reeb's theorem are simplest examples. Special generic maps and the manifolds of their domains have been studied well. Their structures are simple and this help us to study explicitly. As important properties, they have been shown to restrict the topologies and the differentiable structures of the manifolds strongly by Saeki and Sakuma, followed by Nishioka, Wrazidlo and the author. To cover wider classes of manifolds as the domains, the author previously introduced a class generalizing the class of special generic maps and smaller than our class: simply generalized special generic maps.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize the notion of regular homotopy of immersions of a closed connected n-manifold into R^{2n-1} to locally generic mappings. The main result is that if n=2 then two mappings with singularities are regularly homotopic if and only if they have the same number of cross-cap (or Whitney-umbrella) singularities. As an application, we get a description of the path-components of the space of those immersions of a surface into R^4 whose projections into R^3 are locally generic.

Abstract:The celebrated Morlet-Burghelea-Lashof-Kirby-Siebenmann smoothing theory theorem states that the group $\mathrm{Diff}_\partial(D^n)$ of diffeomorphisms of a disc $D^n$ relative to the boundary is equivalent to $\Omega^{n+1}\left(\mathrm{PL}_n/\mathrm{O}_n\right)$ for any $n\geq 1$ and to $\Omega^{n+1}\left(\mathrm{TOP}_n/\mathrm{O}_n\right)$ for $n\neq 4$. We revise smoothing theory results to show that the delooping generalizes to different versions of disc smooth embedding spaces relative to the boundary, namely the usual embeddings, those modulo immersions, and framed embeddings. The latter spaces deloop as $\mathrm{Emb}_\partial^{fr}(D^m,D^n)\simeq\Omega^{m+1}\left(\mathrm{O}_n\backslash\!\!\backslash\mathrm{PL}_n/\mathrm{PL}_{n,m}\right)\simeq \Omega^{m+1}\left(\mathrm{O}_n\backslash\!\!\backslash\mathrm{TOP}_n/\mathrm{TOP}_{n,m}\right)$ for any $n\geq m\geq 1$ ($n\neq 4$ for the second equivalence), where the left-hand side in the case $n-m=2$ or $(n,m)=(4,3)$ should be replaced by the union of the path-components of $\mathrm{PL}$-trivial knots (framing being disregarded). Moreover, we show that for $n\neq 4$, the delooping is compatible with the Budney $E_{m+1}$-action. Abstract:This paper is a contribution to piecewise linear (PL) symplectic topology. We define the notion of PL symplectic manifold as being a combinatorial manifold endowed with a piecewise constant Whitney symplectic form and investigate possible relations between the two categories of symplectic spaces. We prove that smooth symplectic manifolds admit arbitrarily fine smooth triangulations in general position with respect to the symplectic form and can be $C^0$-approximated by PL symplectic manifolds. We cannot prove that smooth symplectic structures can be triangulated, except in trivial cases, but we can prove that their associated volume form can be triangulated by the volume form of some of these approximating PL manifolds.

Abstract:We prove an equivariant version of the classical Menger-Nobeling theorem regarding topological embeddings: Whenever a group $G$ acts on a finite-dimensional compact metric space $X$, a generic continuous equivariant function from $X$ into $([0,1]^r)^G$ is a topological embedding, provided that for every positive integer $N$ the space of points in $X$ with orbit size at most $N$ has topological dimension strictly less than $\frac{rN}{2}$. We emphasize that the result imposes no restrictions whatsoever on the acting group $G$ (beyond the existence of an action on a finite-dimensional space). Moreover, if $G$ is finitely generated then there exists a finite subset $F\subset G$ so that for a generic continuous map $h:X\to [0,1]^{r}$, the map $h^{F}:X\to ([0,1]^{r})^{F}$ given by $x\mapsto (f(gx))_{g\in F}$ is an embedding. This constitutes a generalization of the Takens delay embedding theorem into the topological category.

Abstract:The construction of topological index maps for equivariant families of Dirac operators requires factoring a general smooth map through maps of a very simple type: zero sections of vector bundles, open embeddings, and vector bundle projections. Roughly speaking, a normally non-singular map is a map together with such a factorisation. These factorisations are models for the topological index map. Under some assumptions concerning the existence of equivariant vector bundles, any smooth map admits a normal factorisation, and two such factorisations are unique up to a certain notion of equivalence. To prove this, we generalise the Mostow Embedding Theorem to spaces equipped with proper groupoid actions. We also discuss orientations of normally non-singular maps with respect to a cohomology theory and show that oriented normally non-singular maps induce wrong-way maps on the chosen cohomology theory. For K-oriented normally non-singular maps, we also get a functor to Kasparov's equivariant KK-theory. We interpret this functor as a topological index map.
