Abstract:In this paper we discuss the path integral representations for the coordinate systems on the complex sphere S3C. The Schroedinger equation, respectively the path integral, separates in exactly 21 orthogonal coordinate systems. We enumerate these coordinate systems and we are able to present the path integral representations explicitly in the majority of the cases. In each solution the expansion into the wave-functions is stated. Also, the kernel and the corresponding Green function can be stated in closed form in terms of the invariant distance on the sphere, respectively on the hyperboloid.

Spherical and hyperbolic orthogonal ring patterns: integrability and variational principles

Abstract:We introduce orthogonal ring patterns in the 2-sphere and in the hyperbolic plane, consisting of pairs of concentric circles, which generalize circle patterns. We show that their radii are described by a discrete integrable system. This is a special case of the master integrable equation Q4. The variational description is given in terms of elliptic generalizations of the dilogarithm function. They have the same convexity principles as their circle-pattern counterparts. This allows us to prove existence and uniqueness results for the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems. Some examples are computed numerically. In the limit of small smoothly varying rings, one obtains harmonic maps to the sphere and to the hyperbolic plane. A close relation to discrete surfaces with constant mean curvature is explained.

Abstract:We consider the nonholonomic systems of $n$ homogeneous balls $\mathbf B_1,\dots,\mathbf B_n$ with the same radius $r$ that are rolling without slipping about a fixed sphere $\mathbf S_0$ with center $O$ and radius $R$. In addition, it is assumed that a dynamically nonsymmetric sphere $\mathbf S$ with the center that coincides with the center $O$ of the fixed sphere $\mathbf S_0$ rolls without slipping in contact to the moving balls $\mathbf B_1,\dots,\mathbf B_n$. The problem is considered in four different configurations. We derive the equations of motion and prove that these systems possess an invariant measure. As the main result, for $n=1$ we found two cases that are integrable in quadratures according to the Euler-Jacobi theorem. The obtained integrable nonholonomic models are natural extensions of the well-known Chaplygin ball integrable problems. Further, we explicitly integrate the planar problem consisting of $n$ homogeneous balls of the same radius, but with different masses, that roll without slipping over a fixed plane $\Sigma_0$ with a plane $\Sigma$ that moves without slipping over these balls.

Three-integral oblate galaxy models

Abstract:A simple numerical scheme is presented for the construction of three-integral phase-space distribution functions for oblate galaxy models with a gravitational potential of Stäckel form, and an arbitrary axisymmetric luminous density distribution. The intrinsic velocity moments can be obtained simultaneously with little extra effort. The distribution of the inner and outer turning points of the short-axis tube orbits that are populated can be specified freely, and is chosen in advance. The entire distribution function is then derived from the density by an iterative scheme that starts from the explicitly known distribution function of the thin-orbit (maximum streaming) model, in which only the tubes with equal inner and outer turning points are populated. The versatility and limitations of this scheme are illustrated by the construction of a number of self-consistent three-integral flattened isochrone models of Kuzmin--Kutuzov type, and by investigation of special cases where the scheme is tractable analytically. This includes the behaviour of the distribution functions in the outer regions of the models. The scheme converges rapidly for models containing orbits with ratios of the outer to inner turning point as large as ten, and is particularly suited for the construction of tangentially anisotropic flattened models, self-consistent as well as non-consistent. The algorithm simplifies in the disk and spherical limit, and can be generalized to triaxial models.

Abstract:I present exact expressions for the interior gravitational potential V of a system of N concentric constant-density (Maclaurin) spheroids. I demonstrate an iteration procedure to find a self-consistent solution for the shapes of the interfaces between spheroids, and for the interior gravitational potential. The external free-space potential, expressed as a multipole expansion, emerges as part of the self-consistent solution. The procedure is both simpler and more precise than perturbation methods. One can choose the distribution and mass densities of the concentric spheroids so as to reproduce a prescribed barotrope to a specified accuracy. I demonstrate the method's efficacy by comparing its results with several published test cases.

Spherical Witt vectors and integral models for spaces

Abstract:We give a new construction of the spherical Witt vector functor of Lurie and Burklund-Schlank-Yuan and extend it to nonconnective objects using synthetic spectra and recent work of Holeman. The spherical Witt vectors are used to build spherical versions of perfect $\lambda$-rings and to motivate new results in Grothendieck's schematization program, building on work of Ekedahl, Kriz, Mandell, Lurie, Quillen, Sullivan, Toën, and Yuan. In particular, there is an $\infty$-category of perfect derived $\lambda$-rings with trivializations of the Adams operations $\psi^p$ for all $p$ such that the functor sending a space $X$ to its integral cochains on $X$, viewed as such a derived $\lambda$-ring, is fully faithful on a large class of nilpotent spaces. Our theorem is closely related to recent work of Horel and Kubrak-Shuklin-Zakharov. Finally, we answer two questions of Yuan on spherical cochains.

Abstract:At the end of 19-th century, 1874, Hermann Schwartz found that for every point inside a planar disk, a two-dimensional Poisson Kernel can be written as a ratio of two segments, which he called as the geometric interpretation of that Kernel \cite{Schwarz}. About 90 years later, Lars Ahlfors, in his textbook, called this ratio as interesting \cite{Ahlfors}. We shall see here that every two different points, in a multidimensional space also define a similar ratio of two segments. The main goal of this paper is to study some integral properties of the ratio as well as introduce and proof One Radius Theorem for Spherical Ratio of two points. In particular, we introduce a new integration technique involving the ratio of two segments and a non-trivial integral equivalence leading to an integral relationship between Newtonian Potential and Poisson Kernel in any multi-dimensional space.

Abstract:We show that isotropic positive definite functions on the $d$-dimensional sphere which are $2k$ times differentiable at zero have $2k+[(d-1)/2]$ continuous derivatives on $(0,\pi)$. This result is analogous to the result for radial positive definite functions on Euclidean spaces. We prove optimality of the result for all odd dimensions. The proof relies on montée, descente and turning bands operators on spheres which parallel the corresponding operators originating in the work of Matheron for radial positive definite functions on Euclidian spaces.

Abstract:SUMMARY We define the degenerate orthorhombic anisotropy models which have two symmetric singularity lines with constant phase velocity for S1 and S2 waves. Depending on the singularity line trajectory, we consider two types of degenerate models (VTI- and HTI-type). In addition to this singularity line, seriethere is always one isolated singularity point in one of non-essential symmetry planes. The degenerate orthorhombic model has seven independent parameters and can be parametrized by different combinations of the stiffness coefficients. Exploiting the fact that the second-order derivatives matrix computed from the Christoffel polynomial is degenerate, we also compute the group velocity image of this singularity line.

Abstract:We propose a numerical method to compute the inertial modes of a container with near-spherical geometry based on the fully spectral discretisation of the angular and radial directions using spherical harmonics and Gegenbauer polynomial expansion respectively. This allows to solve simultaneously the Poincare equation and the no penetration condition as an algebraic polynomial eigenvalue problem. The inertial modes of an exact oblate spheroid are recovered to machine precision using an appropriate set of spheroidal coordinates. We show how other boundaries that deviate slightly from a sphere can be accommodated for with the technique of equivalent spherical boundary and we demonstrate the convergence properties of this approach for the triaxial ellipsoid.

Abstract:We consider the general question of when all orbits under the unitary action of a finite group give a complex spherical design. Those orbits which have large stabilisers are then good candidates for being optimal complex spherical designs. This is done by developing the general theory of complex designs and associated (harmonic) Molien series for group actions. As an application, we give explicit constructions of some putatively optimal real and complex spherical t -designs.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with vector random fields on spheres with second-order increments, which are intrinsically stationary and mean square continuous and have isotropic variogram matrix functions. A characterization of the continuous and isotropic variogram matrix function on a sphere is derived, in terms of an infinite sum of the products of positive definite matrices and ultraspherical polynomials. It is valid for Gaussian or elliptically contoured vector random fields, but may not be valid for other non-Gaussian vector random fields on spheres such as a χ 2 , log-Gaussian, or skew-Gaussian vector random field. Some parametric variogram matrix models are derived on spheres via different constructional approaches. A simulation study is conducted to illustrate the implementation of the proposed model in estimation and cokriging, whose performance is compared with that using the linear model of coregionalization.

Abstract:The theory of Nested Figures of Equilibrium, expanded in Papers I and II, is investigated in the limit where the number of layers of the rotating body is infinite, enabling to reach full heterogeneity. In the asymptotic process, the discrete set of equations becomes a differential equation for the rotation rate. In the special case of rigid rotation (from center to surface), we are led to an Integro-Differential Equation (IDE) linking the ellipticity of isopycnic surfaces to the equatorial mass-density profile. In constrast with most studies, these equations are not restricted to small flattenings, but are valid for fast rotators as well. We use numerical solutions obtained from the SCF-method to validate this approach. At small ellipticities (slow rotation), we fully recover Clairaut's equation. Comparisons with Chandrasekhar's perturbative approach and with Roberts' work based on Virial equations are successful. We derive a criterion to characterize the transition from slow to fast rotators. The treatment of heterogeneous structures containing mass-density jumps is proposed through a modified IDE.

Abstract:When deriving dyadic Green's functions for the spherical structures with gyrotropic or bianisotropic materials, an integral whose integrand function consists of two spherical Bessel functions and a power function needs to be evaluated. Therefore, this paper revisits thoroughly the evaluation of the integral of Il,l'(kappa,kappa'). Starting from pointing out an error, it provides the correct solution to the integral in spherical coordinates in terms of distribution, in particular, step functions and delta functions. The formulation is further extended to a more generalized integral Hl,l'lambda(kappa,kappa'); and it is newly found that the solution to the generalized integral varies differently in the cases of even and odd values of l-l'. The mistakes that we found in the previous literature can also be proved easily by some of our intermediate solutions

Abstract:Computing spherical parameterizations for genus-zero closed surfaces is a fundamental task for geometric processing and computer graphics. Existing methods usually suffer from a lack of practical robustness or poor quality. In this paper, we present a practically robust method to compute high-quality spherical parameterizations with bijection and low isometric distortion. Our method is based on the hierarchical scheme containing mesh decimation and parameterization refinement. The practical robustness of our method relies on two novel techniques. The first one is a flat-to-extrusive decimation strategy, which contains two decimation error metrics to alleviate the difficulty of further mesh refinement. The second is a flexible group refinement technique that consists of flexible vertex insertion and efficient volumetric distortion minimization to control the maximum distortion. We convert the task of volumetric distortion minimization to one of tetrahedral mesh improvement to make the vertices distribute uniformly for efficient refinement. Compared with state-of-the-art methods, our method is more practically robust and possesses better mapping qualities. We demonstrate the efficacy of our method in spherical parameterization computations on a data set containing over five thousand complex models.

Abstract:In this paper, we compare two optimization algorithms using full Hessian and approximation Hessian to obtain numerical spherical designs through their variational characterization. Based on the obtained spherical design point sets, we investigate the approximation of smooth and non-smooth functions by spherical harmonics with spherical designs. Finally, we use spherical framelets for denoising Wendland functions as an application, which shows the great potential of spherical designs in spherical data processing.
