Abstract:Using the Lawson's existence theorem of minimal surfaces and the symmetries of the Hopf fibration, we will construct symmetric embedded closed minimal surfaces in the three dimensional sphere. These surfaces contain the Clifford torus, the Lawson's minimal surfaces, and seven new minimal surfaces with genera 9, 25, 49, 121, 121, 361 and 841. We will also discuss the relation between such surfaces and the maximal extendable group actions on subsurfaces of the three dimensional sphere.

Under this framework, minimal surfaces in the nearly Kahler S-6 are studied. A complete classification for complete minimal surfaces in S-6 With constant Kahler angle and nonnegative curvature is given. Moreover, almost complex curves in S-6 are considered.

Abstract:The Willmore Problem seeks the surface in $\mathbb{S}^3\subset\mathbb{R}^4$ of a given topological type minimizing the squared-mean-curvature energy $W = \int |H_{\mathbb{R}^4}|^2 = area + \int |H_{\mathbb{S}^3}|^2$. The longstanding Willmore Conjecture that the Clifford torus minimizes $W$ among genus-$1$ surfaces is now a theorem of Marques and Neves [22], but the general conjecture \cite[12] that Lawson's [18] minimal surface $\xi_{g,1}\subset\mathbb{S}^3$ minimizes $W$ among surfaces of genus $g>1$ remains open. Here we prove this conjecture under the additional assumption that the competitor surfaces $M\subset\mathbb{S}^3$ share the ambient symmetries $\widehat{G}_{g,1}$ of $\xi_{g,1}$. In fact, we show each Lawson surface $\xi_{m,k}$ satisfies the analogous $W$-minimizing property under a smaller symmetry group $\widetilde{G}_{m,k}=\widehat{G}_{m,k}\cap SO(4)$. We also describe a genus 2 example where known methods do not ensure the existence of a $W$-minimizer among surfaces with its symmetry.

Abstract:Minimal and CMC surfaces in S3$$S^3$$ can be treated via their associated family of flat SL(2,C)$$SL(2,{\mathbb {C}})$$-connections. In this the paper we parametrize the moduli space of flat SL(2,C)$$SL(2,{\mathbb {C}})$$-connections on the Lawson minimal surface of genus 2 which are equivariant with respect to certain symmetries of Lawson’s geometric construction. The parametrization uses Hitchin’s abelianization procedure to write such connections explicitly in terms of flat line bundles on a complex 1-dimensional torus. This description is used to develop a spectral curve theory for the Lawson surface. This theory applies as well to other CMC and minimal surfaces with the same holomorphic symmetries as the Lawson surface but different Riemann surface structure. Additionally, we study the space of isospectral deformations of compact minimal surface of genus g≥2$$g\ge 2$$ and prove that it is generated by simple factor dressing.

Abstract:Suppose an orientation preserving action of a finite group $G$ on the closed surface $Sigma_g$ of genus $gu003e1$ extends over the 3-torus $T^3$ for some embedding $Sigma_gsubset T^3$. Then $|G|le 12(g-1)$, and this upper bound $12(g-1)$ can be achieved for $g=n^2+1, 3n^2+1, 2n^3+1, 4n^3+1, 8n^3+1, nin mathbb{Z}_+$. Those surfaces in $T^3$ realizing the maximum symmetries can be either unknotted or knotted. Similar problems in non-orientable category is also discussed. Connection with minimal surfaces in $T^3$ is addressed and when the maximum symmetric surfaces above can be realized by minimal surfaces is identified.

Abstract:The topology and symmetry group of a free boundary minimal surface in the three-dimensional Euclidean unit ball do not determine the surface uniquely. We provide pairs of non-isometric free boundary minimal surfaces having any sufficiently large genus $g$, three boundary components and antiprismatic symmetry group of order $4(g+1)$.

Embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ and $\mathbb{B}^3$ via equivariant eigenvalue optimization

Abstract:In 1970, Lawson solved the topological realization problem for minimal surfaces in the sphere, showing that any closed orientable surface can be minimally embedded in $\mathbb{S}^3$. The analogous problem for surfaces with boundary was posed by Fraser and Li in 2014, and it has attracted much attention in recent years, stimulating the development of many new constructions for free boundary minimal surfaces. In this paper, we resolve this problem by showing that any compact orientable surface with boundary can be embedded in $\mathbb{B}^3$ as a free boundary minimal surface with area below $2\pi$. Furthermore, we show that the number of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ of prescribed topology and area below $8\pi$, and the number of free boundary minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{B}^3$ with prescribed topology and area below $2\pi$, grow at least linearly with the genus. This is achieved via a new method for producing minimal surfaces of prescribed topology in low-dimensional balls and spheres, based on the optimization of Laplace and Steklov eigenvalues in the presence of a discrete symmetry group. As a key ingredient, we develop new techniques for proving the existence of maximizing metrics, which can be used to resolve the existence problem in many symmetric situations and provide at least partial existence results for classical eigenvalue optimization problems.

The Topological Uniqueness of Complete Minimal Surfaces of Finite Topological Type

Abstract:IN 1970 Lawson [22] proved that two embedded closed diffeomorphic minimal surfaces in the unit three-dimensional sphere S3 in lRJ are ambiently isotopic in S3. Lawson proved this theorem by first proving that an embedded orientable closed minimal surface of genus y in a closed orientable Riemannian three-manifold M’ with positive Ricci curvature disconnects M-’ into two genus-8 handlebodics. A result of Frankel [7] was used to prove this. Lawson then applied a deep result of Waldhauscn [33] that states that decompositions of SJ into two genus-cl handlebodies arc unique up to ambient isotopy. More prcciscly. Waldhauscn’s uniqucncss thcorcm states that whenever a closed surface of genus y in S” separates SJ into handlcbodics, then the embedding of the surface is as simple as possible; in other words, the surface is obtained from a two-sphere Sz c S’ by adding handles in an unknotted manner. Mccks [23] gcncralizcd Lawson’s argument to the case of oricntablc closed minimal surfaces in a closed ,V3 with nonnegative Ricci curvature. Meek’s result and another topological uniqueness result of Waldhauscn [33] implies that two closed diffeomorphic minimal surfaces in S2 x S’ with the usual product metric arc ambiently isotopic. Finally, Meeks-Simon-Yau [25] proved that if X is a closed minimal surface in S’ equipped with a metric of non-negative scalar curvature, then X disconnects S3 into two handlebodies and hence dctcrmincs a unique ambient class in S’. In [23] Mceks considered the problem of the topological uniqueness of minimal surfaces in three-dimensional Euclidean space. In particular, Meeks proved that any two compact diffeomorphic minimal surfaces, with boundary a simple closed curve on the boundary of a smooth convex ball, are ambiently isotopic in the ball. Later Hall [I33 showed that there exist two simple closed curves on the unit sphere S* that bound a knotted minimal surface of genus one. In this paper we will use global properties of stable minimal surfaces in [w’ to prove: A properly embedded minimal surface of finite topological type in R’ is unknotted. In particular, if X, and IEz are two such diffeomorphic surfaces, then they are ambiently isotopic. This is the main result of our paper and it is restated in a more precise form in Theorem 5.1. Abstract:Abstract Let be a finite group acting on a connected open Riemann surface by holomorphic automorphisms and acting on a Euclidean space by orthogonal transformations. We identify a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a ‐equivariant conformal minimal immersion . We show in particular that such a map always exists if acts without fixed points on . Furthermore, every finite group arises in this way for some open Riemann surface and . We obtain an analogous result for minimal surfaces having complete ends with finite total Gaussian curvature, and for discrete groups acting on properly discontinuously and acting on by rigid transformations.

Helicoidal minimal surfaces in the 3-sphere: An approach via spherical curves

Abstract:We prove an existence and uniqueness theorem about spherical helicoidal (in particular, rotational) surfaces with prescribed mean or Gaussian curvature in terms of a continuous function depending on the distance to its axis. As an application in the case of vanishing mean curvature, it is shown that the well-known conjugation between the belicoid and the catenoid in Euclidean three-space extends naturally to the 3-sphere to their spherical versions and determine in a quite explicit way their associated surfaces in the sense of Lawson. As a key tool, we use the notion of spherical angular momentum of the spherical curves that play the role of profile curves of the minimal helicoidal surfaces in the 3-sphere.

Minimal surfaces and alternating multiple zetas

Abstract:In this paper we show for every sufficiently large integer $g$ the existence of a complete family of closed and embedded constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces deforming the Lawson surfaces $\xi_{1,g}$ parametrized by their conformal type. When specializing to the minimal case, we discover a pattern resulting in the coefficients of the involved expansions being alternating multiple zeta values (MZVs), which generalizes the notion of Riemann's zeta values to multiple integer variables. This allows us to extend a new existence proof of the Lawson surfaces $\xi_{1,g}$ to all $g\geq 3$ using complex analytic methods and to give closed form expressions of their area expansion up to order $7$. For example, the third order coefficient is $\tfrac{9}{4}\zeta(3)$ (the first and second order term were shown to be $\log(2)$ and $0$ respectively in \cite{HHT}). As a corollary, we obtain that the area of $\xi_{1,g}$ is monotonically increasing in their genus $g$ for all $g\geq 0.$

Abstract:Caffarelli-Hardt-Simon used the minimal surface equation on the Simons cone $C(S^3\times S^3)$ to generate newer examples of minimal hypersurfaces with isolated singularities. Hardt-Simon proved that every area-minimizing quadratic cone $\mathcal{C}$ having only an isolated singularity can be approximated by a unique foliation of $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ by smooth, area-minimizing hypersurfaces asymptotic to $\mathcal C$. This paper uses methods similar to Caffareli-Hardt-Simon to solve the minimal surface equation for the Hardt-Simon surfaces in the sphere for some boundary values. We use gluing methods to construct minimal surfaces over Hardt-Simon surfaces and near quadratic cones.

On embedded minimal hypersurfaces in $S^{n+1}$ with symmetries

Abstract: In this note, we generalize a characterization of the Clifford torus due to Ros. Let $f:M\rightarrow S^{n+1}$ be an embedded closed minimal hypersurface. Assume there are $(n+2)$ great hyperspheres of $S^{n+1}$ perpendicular to each other, such that $M$ is symmetric with respect to them. Let $S$ denote the square of the length of the second fundamental form of $f$ and let $\bar S=\frac{1}{Vol(M)}\int_{M} Sd M$ be the average of $S$. Then $\bar S\geq n$ with equality holding if and only if $f$ is the Clifford torus $C_{m,n-m}$. It can be rewritten as a Simons' type theorem: If $0\leq \int_M (n-S)d M$, then either $S\equiv0$ or $S\equiv n$. This answers partially a conjecture by Perdomo. Moreover, the estimate of the Willmore energy of $f$ is built: $W(M)\geq n^{\frac{n}{2}}Vol(M)$.
Locally flat simple spheres in $\mathbb{C} P^2$

Abstract:The fundamental group of the complement of a locally flat surface in a $4$-manifold is called the knot group of the surface. In this article we prove that two locally flat $2$-spheres in $\mathbb{C} P^2$ with knot group $\mathbb{Z}_2$ are ambiently isotopic if they are homologous. This combines with work of Tristram and Lee-Wilczyński, as well as the classification of $\mathbb{Z}$-surfaces, to complete a proof of the statement: a class $d \in H_2(\mathbb{C} P^2) \cong \mathbb{Z}$ is represented by a locally flat $2$-sphere with abelian knot group if and only if $|d| \in \lbrace 0,1,2\rbrace$; and this sphere is unique up to ambient isotopy.

Abstract:E. Calabi and J. Cao showed that a closed geodesic of least length in a two-sphere with nonnegative curvature is always simple. Using min-max theory, we prove that for some higher dimensions, this result holds without assumptions on the curvature. More precisely, in a closed $(n+1)$-manifold with $2 \leq n \leq 6$, a least area closed minimal hypersurface exists and any such hypersurface is embedded. As an application, we give a short proof of the fact that if a closed three-manifold $M$ has scalar curvature at least $6$ and is not isometric to the round three-sphere, then $M$ contains an embedded closed minimal surface of area less than $4\pi$. This confirms a conjecture of F. C. Marques and A. Neves.

New minimal surface doublings of the Clifford torus and contributions to questions of Yau

Abstract:The purpose of this article is three-fold. First, we apply a general theorem from our earlier work to produce many new minimal doublings of the Clifford Torus in the round three-sphere. This construction generalizes and unifies prior doubling constructions for the Clifford Torus, producing doublings with catenoidal bridges arranged along parallel copies of torus knots. Ketover has also constructed similar minimal surfaces by min-max methods as suggested by Pitts-Rubinstein, but his methods apply only to surfaces which are lifts of genus two surfaces in lens spaces, while ours are not constrained this way. Second, we use this family to prove a new, quadratic lower bound for the number of embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ with prescribed genus. This improves upon bounds recently given by Ketover and Karpukhin-Kusner-McGrath-Stern, and contributes to a question of Yau about the structure of the space of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ with fixed genus. Third, we verify Yau's conjecture for the first eigenvalue of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ in the following cases. First, for all minimal surface doublings of the equatorial two-sphere constructible by our earlier general theorem. Second, for all the Clifford Torus doublings constructed in this article.

We classify (1) totally geodesic Legendrian surfaces, (2) closed minimal Legendrian surfaces of genus smaller than or equal to 1 and complete minimal Legendrian surfaces with the non-negative Gauss curvature, and (3) complete stable minimal Legendrian surfaces.

Solutions to the minimal surface system with large singular sets

Abstract:Lawson and Osserman proved that the Dirichlet problem for the minimal surface system is not always solvable in the class of Lipschitz maps. However, it is known that minimizing sequences (for area) of Lipschitz graphs converge to objects called Cartesian currents. Essentially nothing is known about these limits. We show that such limits can have surprisingly large interior vertical and non-minimal portions. This demonstrates a striking discrepancy between the parametric and non-parametric area minimization problems in higher codimension. Moreover, our construction has the smallest possible dimension ($n = 3$) and codimension $(m = 2)$.
