A Pair Measurement Surface Code on Pentagons

Abstract:In this paper, I present a way to compile the surface code into two-body parity measurements ("pair measurements"), where the pair measurements run along the edges of a Cairo pentagonal tiling. The resulting circuit improves on prior work by Chao et al. by using fewer pair measurements per four-body stabilizer measurement (5 instead of 6) and fewer time steps per round of stabilizer measurement (6 instead of 10). Using Monte Carlo sampling, I show that these improvements increase the threshold of the surface code when compiling into pair measurements from $\approx 0.2\%$ to $\approx 0.4\%$, and also that they improve the teraquop footprint at a $0.1\%$ physical gate error rate from $\approx6000$ qubits to $\approx3000$ qubits. However, I also show that the teraquop footprint of Chao et al's construction improves more quickly than mine as physical error rate decreases, and is likely better below a physical gate error rate of $\approx 0.03\%$ (due to bidirectional hook errors in my construction). I also compare to the planar honeycomb code, showing that although this work does noticeably reduce the gap between the surface code and the honeycomb code (when compiling into pair measurements), the honeycomb code is still more efficient (threshold $\approx 0.8\%$, teraquop footprint at $0.1\%$ of $\approx 1000$).

Abstract:Which surfaces can be realized with two-dimensional faces of the five-dimensional cube (the penteract)? How can we visualize them? In recent work, Aveni, Govc, and Roldan, show that there exist 2690 connected closed cubical surfaces up to isomorphism in the 5-cube. They give a classification in terms of their genus $g$ for closed orientable cubical surfaces and their demigenus $k$ for a closed non-orientable cubical surface. In this paper, we explain the main idea behind the exhaustive search and we visualize the projection to $\mathbb{R}^3$ of a torus, a genus two torus, the projective plane, and the Klein bottle. We use reinforcement learning techniques to obtain configurations optimized for 3D printing.

The Hexagonal Tiling Honeycomb

Abstract:The hexagonal tiling honeycomb is a beautiful structure in 3-dimensional hyperbolic space. It is called {6,3,3} because each hexagon has 6 edges, 3 hexagons meet at each vertex in a Euclidean plane tiled by regular hexagons, and 3 such planes meet along each edge of this honeycomb. It also appears naturally in algebraic geometry. If $\mathbb{E}$ denotes the Eisenstein integers, the Néron-Severi group of the abelian surface $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{E}^2$ is isomorphic to the lattice $\mathfrak{h}_2(\mathbb{E})$ consisting of $2 \times 2$ hermitian matrices with Eisenstein integer entries. The points $A \in \mathfrak{h}_2(\mathbb{E})$ with $\mathrm{tr}(A) \gt 0$ and $\det(A) \gt 0$ come from ample line bundles on $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{E}^2$, and among these points, those with $\det(A) = 1$ correspond to principal polarizations. But these points are precisely the centers of the hexagons in the hexagonal tiling honeycomb!

Surfaces in The Tesseract

Abstract:How can we visualize all the surfaces that can be made from the faces of the tesseract? In recent work, Aveni, Govc, and Roldán showed that the torus and the sphere are the only closed surfaces that can be realized by a subset of two-dimensional faces of the tesseract. They also gave an exhaustive list of all the isomorphic types of embeddings of these two surfaces. Here, we generate 3D models of all these surfaces. We also exhibit, with the help of some hyper-ants, the minimum realization of the Möbius strip on the tesseract.

Asymmetric quantum codes on non-orientable surfaces

Abstract:In this paper, we construct new families of asymmetric quantum surface codes (AQSCs) over non-orientable surfaces of genus $g\geq 2$ by applying tools of hyperbolic geometry. More precisely, we prove that if the genus $g$ of a non-orientable surface is even $(g=2h)$, then the parameters of the corresponding AQSC are equal to the parameters of a surface code obtained from an orientable surface of genus $h$. Additionally, if $S$ is a non-orientable surface of genus $g$, we show that the new surface code constructed on a $\{p, q\}$ tessellation over $S$ has the ratio $k/n$ better than the ratio of an AQSC constructed on the same $\{p, q\}$ tessellation over an orientable surface of the same genus $g$.

Abstract:In this paper we present a variety of statements that are in the spirit of the famous theorem of Pascal, often referred to as the Mystic Hexagon. We give explicit equations describing the conditions for $d+4$ points to lie on rational normal curves. A collection of problems of Pascal type are considered for quadric surfaces in $\bbP^3$. Finally we reprove, using computer algebra methods, a remarkable theorem of Richmond, Segre, and Brown, for quadrics in $\bbP^4$ containing five general lines.

Abstract:We nearly triple the number of logical qubits per physical qubit of surface codes in the teraquop regime by concatenating them into high-density parity check codes. These "yoked surface codes" are arrayed in a rectangular grid, with parity checks (yokes) measured along each row, and optionally along each column, using lattice surgery. Our construction assumes no additional connectivity beyond a nearest neighbor square qubit grid operating at a physical error rate of $10^{-3}$.

Abstract:A quasiperiodic 7-fold rhombic tiling is constructed with an iterative substitution scheme. The inflation factor is 5.04892..., the square of the longer diagonal of a regular heptagon. There are many substitutions possible that fill larger similar tiles with three base shapes but finding the matching rules (how the larger tiles fit together to make even larger tiles) turns into a challenging puzzle. At the end, a new solution is found with seven substitution rules. The relationship to a higher-order Fibonacci series is explored. The tiling is presented with a celestial theme reminiscent of a starry night.

Abstract:This article provides an introduction to surface code quantum computing. We first estimate the size and speed of a surface code quantum computer. We then introduce the concept of the stabilizer, using two qubits, and extend this concept to stabilizers acting on a two-dimensional array of physical qubits, on which we implement the surface code. We next describe how logical qubits are formed in the surface code array and give numerical estimates of their fault tolerance. We outline how logical qubits are physically moved on the array, how qubit braid transformations are constructed, and how a braid between two logical qubits is equivalent to a controlled-not. We then describe the single-qubit Hadamard, Ŝ and T̂ operators, completing the set of required gates for a universal quantum computer. We conclude by briefly discussing physical implementations of the surface code. We include a number of Appendices in which we provide supplementary information to the main text.

Abstract:Quantum 8, 1416 (2024). https://doi.org/10.22331/q-2024-07-18-1416 Twist defects in surface codes can be used to encode more logical qubits, improve the code rate, and implement logical gates. In this work we provide a rigorous formalism for constructing surface codes with twists generalizing the well-defined homological formalism introduced by Kitaev for describing CSS surface codes. In particular, we associate a surface code to graph embedded on 2D-manifold, in such a way that (1) qubits are associated to the vertices of the graph, (2) stabilizers are associated to faces, (3) twist defects are associated to odd-degree vertices. In this way, we are able to reproduce the variety of surface codes, with and without twists, in the literature and produce new examples. We also calculate and bound various code properties such as the rate and distance in terms of topological graph properties such as genus, systole, and face-width.

Abstract:Proctor proved a formula for the number of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with side-lengths $a,b,c,a,b,c$ after removing a "maximal staircase." Ciucu then presented a weighted version of Proctor's result. Here we present weighted and unweighted formulas for a similar region which has an additional unit triangle removed. We use Kuo's graphical condensation method to prove the results. By applying the factorization theorem of Ciucu, we obtain a formula for the number of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with three holes on consecutive edges.

Abstract:With the $[0,1,2]$-family of cyclic triangulations we introduce a rich class of vertex-transitive triangulations of surfaces. In particular, there are infinite series of cyclic $q$-equivelar triangulations of orientable and non-orientable surfaces for every $q=3k$, $k\geq 2$, and every $q=3k+1$, $k\geq 3$. Series of cyclic tessellations of surfaces are derived from these triangulated series.

Abstract:For each surface besides the sphere, projective plane, and Klein bottle, we construct a face-simple minimal quadrangulation, i.e., a simple quadrangulation on the fewest number of vertices possible, whose dual is also a simple graph. Our result answers a question of Liu, Ellingham, and Ye while providing a simpler proof of their main result. The inductive construction is based on an earlier idea for finding near-quadrangular embeddings of the complete graphs using the diamond sum operation.

Computation of symmetries of rational surfaces

Abstract:In this paper we provide, first, a general symbolic algorithm for computing the symmetries of a given rational surface, based on the classical differential invariants of surfaces, i.e. Gauss curvature and mean curvature. In practice, the algorithm works well for sparse parametrizations (e.g. toric surfaces) and PN surfaces. Additionally, we provide a specific, also symbolic algorithm for computing the symmetries of ruled surfaces; this algorithm works extremely well in practice, since the problem is reduced to that of rational space curves, which can be efficiently solved by using existing methods. The algorithm for ruled surfaces is based on the fact, proven in the paper, that every symmetry of a rational surface must also be a symmetry of its line of striction, which is a rational space curve. The algorithms have been implemented in the computer algebra system Maple, and the implementations have been made public; evidence of their performance is given in the paper.
