Abstract:In this paper, the model of Archimedes wave swing (AWS) based wave energy conversion (WEC) system is proposed where a new coordinate transformation for the linear permanent magnet generator between the abc frame of reference and the dq0 frame of reference is proposed and the model of the LPMG in dq0 reference frame suitable for power system dynamic and stability analysis is derived for the first time. Since the output power and the induced voltage both vary, full-scale back-to-back converters are employed to connect the WEC to the power grid in order to maintain a constant active power and terminal voltage at the system side. The controllers for the generator side converter and the grid side converter of the back-to-back converters are also developed. Simulations are performed, when WEC operates under conditions such as no-load, supplying an isolated R-C load and integration with a power system, to simulate the dynamics of the WEC and verify the effectiveness of the model derived and the controllers developed. Comparison between the dynamic responses simulated and those obtained in the field test demonstrates that using the proposed dq0 model, the dynamics of the WEC system can be simulated properly. Using the generator side converter controller, the maximum power can be extracted from the wave while the loss in the LPMG can be minimized. Furthermore, the WEC can keep the output power at the,power grid converter side constant and maintain the terminal voltage constant with the grid side converter controller. These are the desired features for the WEC to operate in parallel with the power grid. The effectiveness of the controller proposed is also validated under small disturbance.

Abstract:In this paper, a continuation three-phase power flow (CTPFlow) approach in polar coordinates, which can be used to analyze voltage stability of unbalanced three-phase power systems, is proposed. Using CTPFlow, the PV curves of unbalanced three-phase power systems can be obtained. It is found that the patterns of the PV Curves of unbalanced three-phase power systems are quite different from that of balanced three-phase power systems or positive-sequence power systems. The investigations indicate that a CTPFlow is needed where there are unbalanced network or loads existing in a system. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the approach.

Abstract:A power flow method based on graph theory is presented for three-phase balanced distribution systems. The graph theory is used to describe the power network and facilitate the derivation of the relationship between bus Currents and the bus Voltage Bias from the feeder bus (the CVB equation). A distinctive feature of the CVB equation is its unified form for both radial and meshed networks. The method requires neither a tricky numbering and layering of nodes nor breaking meshes and loop-analysis, which are both necessary in previous works for meshed networks. The convergence of the proposed method is proven using the Banach fixed-point theorem.

Abstract:Based on loop-analysis method, a theoretical formulation of the forward/backward sweep with compensation power flow method is presented. The reason, why the convergence of this widely used method deteriorates when the network becomes more meshed, is also well analyzed. Subsequently, a novel solution of unbalanced three-phase power systems based on loop-analysis method is developed in this paper. The convergence speed of this algorithm remains very well even when network become more meshed. Furthermore, the implementation of this algorithm is similar with that of the forward/backward sweep with compensation method with the characteristic of understandability. This proposed method has clear theory foundation and takes full advantage of the radial (or weakly meshed) structure of distribution systems. The numerical test proves this new method is very robust and has excellent convergence characteristics.

Abstract:Back/forward sweep algorithm is an effective method for distribution power flow, its convergence has been studied theoretically. According to the feature of radial distribution system, it was proved that the converging speed of the back/forward sweep algorithm is similar to that of the newton method. The mechanism of fast convergence of the back/forward sweep algorithm was expounded. Both theoretical analysis and calculation show that the back/forward algorithm is simple, fast convergence, high efficiency, it will have a bright future in on-line analysis of the distribution power system.

Abstract:Fast power flow calculation is generally required in static security analysis and power system optimal planning. And the classical DC power flow algorithm, due to its simple mathematical model, linearized equation, and rapid solving speed, is widely utilized. However, the classical DC power flow algorithm has been found to be only suitable for high voltage transmission networks with small branch impedance ratio. To address this issue, a general fast power flow algorithm is proposed. Utilizing this method, the classical DC power flow algorithm is firstly performed to obtain the initial values of the branch active power flow. And the nodal voltage angles are then calculated by the established node-injected reactive power equations. Secondly, through the identical transformation and approximate treatment of the node power flow equation, a voltage offset calculation method for PQ nodes is proposed. Finally, the active power flow and active power loss can be calculated based on the corrected phase angles and node voltages. Simulation studies on standard IEEE power systems, such as the IEEE 33-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems, etc., were conducted by the presented algorithm, compared with those by the back/forward sweep, classical DC power flow and Newton-Raphson algorithms. It is indicated that, the proposed power flow algorithm has the superiority in satisfactory calculation speed and non-sensitivity on the network impedance ratio.

Abstract:The back/forward sweep method is specially developed for load flow computation in distribution systems.Its convergence and computational efficiency are usually good,but there is still some space to improve.Given this background,an effort is made to develop a new back/forward sweep method accommodating arbitrary numbering of nodes.In the proposed approach,an algorithm similar to the parallel-stream technique in digital signal processing(DSP) and the interruption-waiting technique in single chip microcomputers is developed and named as the parallel and interruption-waiting method.A case study is served for demonstrating the convergence and computational efficiency of the proposed method,and for comparisons with several existing methods such as the conventional Newton-Raphson method,two modified Newton methods and the existing hierarchical back/forward sweep method.It is shown by simulation results that the proposed method is superior to the others in terms of the convergence and computational efficiency.

Abstract:Forward/backward sweep power flow (FBS) is widely used in distribution network analysis because it is very efficient for radial and weakly meshed networks. In these types of methods, sensitivity-based approaches are commonly used to account for PV nodes in active distribution system; however, the convergence deteriorates as the number of PV nodes increases, and may even diverge for large-branch R X ratios. We propose an efficient-method for handling PV nodes based on loop analysis incorporated in the FBS framework. Here, PV nodes refer to nodes connected by distributed generators with constant voltage control. As an extension of FBS, the proposed method's convergence remains satisfactory when the number of PV nodes increases for a wide range of branch R X ratios. Numerical simulations with three-phase models were carried out to quantify the performance of the method.

Abstract:As an efficient way for improving utilization efficiency of energy sources and reducing the environmental pollutions, integrated energy system has gained rapid development. Meanwhile, traditional power flow calculation methods, which are focused on the electric power system, may fail to satisfy the need of analyzing coupled energy flow. In this paper, an integrated electricity-heat power flow method in distribution network is proposed. Firstly, models of electricity and heat networks are established in this paper. On this basis, an integrated electricity-heat power flow matrix is built, which is based on thermal model and a direct load flow method. Moreover, forward/backward iterations are utilized to solve the integrated electricity-heat power flow problem. The feasibility and effectiveness as well as accuracy, efficiency and robustness are simulated on a real distribution network.

Abstract:A new continuation power flow method is proposed, which is an extension of the popular backward/forward sweep power flow (BFS) for distribution network. The different reasons for the divergence of Newton's algorithm and fixed-point iteration algorithm near the saddle node bifurcation point have been investigated extensively. Loop-analysis-based power flow (LBPF) is a revised version of BFS, which belong to fixed-point iteration algorithm and its convergence remains satisfactory in a meshed network. Based on LBPF, a tailored continuous power flow method is developed, which can be used as a voltage stability analysis tool for both radial and meshed distribution networks. Numerical test results are presented to validate the proposed procedure.

Abstract:The study proposes a fast flexible direct power flow solution for radial distribution systems and a fast flexible direct weakly meshed power flow solution for weakly meshed distribution systems. The algorithm is based on the direct forward sweep power flow solution, which is an updated version of the backward/forward sweep solution. The fast flexible direct power flow uses a unique conversion matrix (CM) to rapidly determine the power flow solution. The inverted conversion matrix and its slide-modified matrix are used to solve the power flow problem in a single forward sweep step, which is a novel feature of this work. To ensure the invertibility of the conversion matrix, it is constructed to have a small condition number and a determinant of minus one, and all of its eigenvalues must be equal to that of minus one. Additionally, by modifying the conversion matrix to accommodate the loop branch using the break-point idea, a new weakly meshed conversion matrix (WMCM) is generated with the same following modification as for the radial network and employed in the fast flexible direct weakly meshed power flow (FFDWMPF) solution for the weakly meshed distribution network. The usage of a single matrix in the power flow solution and advanced direct techniques decreases the number of iterations and CPU execution time when MATLAB programming is executed. Furthermore, the proposed method is flexible enough to incorporate any changes in the radial or weakly meshed distribution system just by incorporating the changes in the CM and WMCM for any radial or weakly meshed system. Moreover, the robustness of FFDPF and FFDWMPF is evaluated under various loading scenarios on balanced radial and weakly meshed distribution networks. Finally, to validate the proposed algorithm, the proposed strategy is applied to numerous balanced and unbalanced distribution systems.

Abstract:Various distributed generators (DGs) are integrated in distribution system which is usually operated in three-phase unbalanced condition. There are various distributed generator with various control mode. The equivalent interface impedance of DGs may vary within a large range. Backward/forward sweep power flow (FBS) is an important method for distribution system power flow analysis. In this paper, the convergence problem caused by the zero and negative sequence impedance of DGs in forward/backward sweep power flow was found through numerical experiments. The reason of this phenomenon is that spectral radius of FBS is more than 1 and an impedance compensation method is proposed to solve this problem.

Abstract:Single‐phase loads and photovoltaic generation cause three‐phase imbalance in distribution systems, and prospective growth of normal chargers of electric vehicles may even increase the imbalance. The analysis of such unbalanced systems requires the three‐phase power‐flow calculation. Since existing methods require the admittance matrices of three‐phase transformers, they must be derived for all possible winding connection patterns in advance to its computer‐code implementation. This paper proposes a three‐phase power‐flow calculation method which formulates circuit equations using the modified nodal analysis, making it possible to automatically handle any winding connection. The power‐flow constraints are then embedded into the circuit equations using a fixed‐point iteration. Newton‐Raphson, backward/forward sweep and fixed‐point iteration methods are the existing three categories of solution methods. Newton‐Raphson methods may show convergence problems due to the high R/X ratios of distribution lines. Backward/forward sweep methods cannot be used, because loops are temporarily formed in a distribution system during circuit switching. These justify the use of a fixed‐point iteration. In this paper, the proposed method is validated by practical examples.

Abstract:Theoretical Study on the Forward/Backward Sweep Power Flow method, which based on loop analysis theorem, is proposed in this paper. It is proved that the Forward/Backward Sweep is not equivalent to loop analysis theorem theoretically in this paper. And the reason for the deterioration of this algorithm’s convergence for meshed network is also well analyzed. Furthermore, a novel Forward/Backward Sweep algorithm for mesh network is developed which is firmly based loop analysis theorem. The convergence of this novel algorithm is improved dramatically for meshed network, while it is simple as the former back/forward sweep method for implementation. The relationship between this novel algorithm and Newton method are also studied. Though, this algorithm is not as good as Newton method in convergent speed, the calculation burden is very light. Thus, this algorithm is very efficient. The numerical test shows that the convergence of this algorithm becomes faster, when more loops are closed in the same system.

Abstract:Confronted with uncertainties, especially from large amounts of renewable energy sources, power flow studies need further analysis to cover the range of voltage magnitude and transferred power. To address this issue, this work proposes a novel interval power flow for the radial network by the use of an extended, simplified DistFlow formulation, which can be transformed into a set of interval linear equations. Furthermore, the Krawczyk iteration method, including an approximate inverse preconditioner using Frobenius norm minimisation, is employed to solve this problem. The approximate inverse preconditioner guarantees the convergence of the iterative method and has the potential for parallel implementation. In addition, to avoid generating a dense approximate inverse matrix in the preconditioning step, a dropping strategy is introduced to perform a sparse representation, which can significantly reduce the memory requirement and ease the matrix operation burden. The proposed methods are demonstrated on 33-bus, 69-bus, 123-bus, and several large systems. A comparison with interval LU decomposition, interval Gauss elimination method, and Monte Carlo simulation verifies its effectiveness.
A Fast and Robust Load Flow Method for Distribution Systems with Distributed Generations

Abstract:This paper proposes a fast and robust load flow method for balanced power distribution systems with distributed generation sources. The method formulates the power flow equations in PQ decoupled form with polar coordinates. Second-order terms are included in the active power mismatch iteration, and resistances are fully modeled without any simplifications. The impacts of zero-impedance branches are explicitly modeled through reconfiguring of the adjacent branches with impedances. Typical distribution generation models and distribution load models are included. A hybrid direct and indirect solution technique is used to achieve efficiency and robustness of the algorithm. Active power correction is solved by means of a sparse LU decomposition algorithm with partial pivoting, and the reactive power correction is solved by means of restarted Generalized Minimal Residual algorithm with incomplete LU preconditioner. The numerical examples on a sample distribution system with widespread Photovoltaic installations are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Convergence problems in forward/backward sweep power flow algorithms may arise because of neutral grounding resistance in multi-grounded three-phase four-wire distribution networks.The causes of the convergence problem are analyzed and an impedance compensation method of addressing this problem is described.The proposed method is able to guarantee the convergence and keep the power flow solution unchanged.By adding two serial impedances with opposite value between the grounding resistance and the neutral point,the spectral radius of the Jacobian matrix in fixed-point iteration is reduced to below 1 ,which satisfies the requirement of contraction mapping.Finally,the results of numerical tests have demonstrated the correctness of the method and its practical values.

Abstract:To avoid difficulty in determining weights for real-time measurement and predicted load data in the conventional WLS-based distribution system state estimation, a novel method called distribution matching power flow (DMPF) is proposed in this letter. The method is implemented by two steps: first state estimation for the main network and then DMPF calculation for radial subsystems. In the method, state estimation for radial subsystems can be converted into a DMPF calculation. The equivalent relationship between DMPF calculation and radial distribution state estimation, which lays a theoretical foundation for DMPF, is derived. A practical forward/backward sweep algorithm for DMPF is given. Numerical results show the efficiency of DMPF calculation for distribution state estimation.

Abstract:This paper presents a comparative analysis of six different iterative power flow methods applied to AC distribution networks, which have been recently reported in the scientific literature. These power flow methods are (i) successive approximations, (ii) matricial backward/forward method, (iii) triangular-based approach, (iv) product linearization method, (v) hyperbolic linearization method, and (vi) diagonal approximation method. The first three methods and the last one are formulated without recurring derivatives, and they can be directly formulated in the complex domain; the fourth and fifth methods are based on the linear approximation of the power balance equations that are also formulated in the complex domain. The numerical comparison involves three main aspects: the convergence rate, processing time, and the number of iterations calculated using the classical Newton–Raphson method as the reference case. Numerical results from two test feeders composed of 34 and 85 nodes demonstrate that the derivative-free methods have linear convergence, and the methods that use derivatives in their formulation have quadratic convergence.
