Abstract:We show that an $n$-uniform maximal intersecting family has size at most $e^{-n^{0.5+o(1)}}n^n$. This improves a recent bound by Frankl. The Spread Lemma of Alweiss, Lowett, Wu and Zhang plays an important role in the proof.

Abstract:We consider families of k-subsets of the standard n-set. Two families F, G are said to be cross-intersecting if every member of F has non-empty intersection with every member of G. A family is called non-trivial if the intersection of all its members is empty. Supposing that F and G are non-trivial and cross-intersecting, we determine the maximum of |F|+|G|. For the proof a strengthened version of the so-called shifting technique is introduced. The corresponding problem for families of different uniformities is solved as well.

Abstract:For a positive integer $d\geq 2$, a family $\mathcal F\subseteq \binom{[n]}{k}$ is said to be d-wise intersecting if $|F_1\cap F_2\cap \dots\cap F_d|\geq 1$ for all $F_1, F_2, \dots ,F_d\in \mathcal F$. A d-wise intersecting family $\mathcal F\subseteq \binom{[n]}{k}$ is called maximal if $\mathcal F\cup\{A\}$ is not d-wise intersecting for any $A\in\binom{[n]}{k}\setminus\mathcal F$. We provide a refinement of O'Neill and Verstraëte's Theorem about the structure of the largest and the second largest maximal non-trivial d-wise intersecting k-uniform families. We also determine the structure of the third largest and the fourth largest maximal non-trivial d-wise intersecting k-uniform families for any $k>d+1\geq 4$, and the fifth largest and the sixth largest maximal non-trivial 3-wise intersecting k-uniform families for any $k\geq 5$, in the asymptotic sense. Our proofs are applications of the $\Delta$-system method.

The maximum sturdiness of intersecting families

Abstract:Given a family $\mathcal{F}\subset 2^{[n]}$ and $1\leq i\neq j\leq n$, we use $\mathcal{F}(\bar{i},j)$ to denote the family $\{F\setminus \{j\}\colon F\in \mathcal{F},\ F\cap \{i,j\}=\{j\}\}$. The sturdiness of $\mathcal{F}$ is defined as the minimum $|\mathcal{F}(\bar{i},j)|$ over all $i,j\in [n]$ with $i\neq j$. It has a very natural algebraic definition as well. In the present paper, we consider the maximum sturdiness of $k$-uniform intersecting families, $k$-uniform $t$-intersecting families and non-uniform $t$-intersecting families. One of the main results shows that for $n\geq 36(k+6)$, an intersecting family $\mathcal{F}\subset \binom{[n]}{k}$ has sturdiness at most $\binom{n-4}{k-3}$, which is best possible.

Abstract:Let $[n]:=\lbrace 1,2,\ldots,n \rbrace$, and $M$ be a set of positive integers. Denote the family of all subsets of $[n]$ with sizes in $M$ by $\binom{\left[n\right]}{M}$. The non-empty families $\mathcal{A}\subseteq\binom{\left[n\right]}{R}$ and $\mathcal{B}\subseteq \binom{\left[n\right]}{S}$ are said to be cross $t$-intersecting if $|A\cap B|\geq t$ for all $A\in \mathcal{A}$ and $B\in \mathcal{B}$. In this paper, we determine the maximum sum of sizes of non-empty cross $t$-intersecting families, and characterize the extremal families. Similar result for finite vector spaces is also proved.

The families $\mathcal{F}_1\subseteq \binom{[n]}{R_1},\mathcal{F}_2\subseteq \binom{[n]}{R_2},\ldots,\mathcal{F}_m\subseteq \binom{[n]}{R_m}$ are said to be non-empty cross-intersecting if for each $i\in [m]$, $\mathcal{F}_i\neq\emptyset$ and for any $A\in \mathcal{F}_i,B\in\mathcal{F}_j$, $1\leq i<j\leq m$, $|A\bigcap B|\geq1$. In this paper, we determine the maximum value of $\sum_{j=1}^{m}|\mathcal{F}_j|$ for non-empty cross-intersecting family $\mathcal{F}_1, \mathcal{F}_2,\ldots,\mathcal{F}_m$ when $n\geq k_1+k_2$, where $k_1$ (respectively, $k_2$) is the largest (respectively, second largest) value in $\{k_{1,1},k_{2,1},\ldots,k_{m,1}\}$. This result is a generalization of the results by Shi, Frankl and Qian \cite{shi2022non} on non-empty cross-intersecting families. Moreover, the extremal families are completely characterized.

Abstract:The study of intersection problems on families of sets is one of the most important topics in extremal combinatorics. As we all know, the extremal problems involving certain intersection constraints are equivalent to that with the union properties by taking complement of sets. A family of sets is called $s$-union if the union of any two sets in this family has size at most $s$. Katona [Acta Math. Hungar. 15 (1964)] provided the maximum size of an $s$-union family of sets of $[n]$, and he also determined the extremal families up to isomorphism. Recently, Frankl [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 122 (2017) 869--876] sharpened this result by establishing the maximum size of an $s$-union family that is not a subfamily of the so-called Katona family. In this paper, we determine the maximum size of an $s$-union family that is neither contained in the Katona family nor in the Frankl family. Moreover, we characterize all extremal families achieving the upper bounds.

Abstract:Using the sunflower method, we show that if $\theta \in (0,1) \cap \mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathcal{F}$ is a $O(n^{1/3})$-bounded $\theta$-intersecting family over $[n]$, then $\lvert \mathcal{F} \rvert = O(n)$, and that if $\mathcal{F}$ is $o(n^{1/3})$-bounded, then $\lvert \mathcal{F} \rvert \leq (\frac{3}{2} + o(1))n$. This partially solves a conjecture raised in (Balachandran et al., Electron J. Combin. 26 (2019), #P2.40) that any $\theta$-intersecting family over $[n]$ has size at most linear in $n$, in the regime where we have no very large sets.

Abstract:A family of subsets of $[n]$ is intersecting if every pair of its sets intersects. Determining the structure of large intersecting families is a central problem in extremal combinatorics. Frankl-Kupavskii and Balogh-Das-Liu-Sharifzadeh-Tran independently showed that for $n\geq 2k + c\sqrt{k\ln k}$, almost all $k$-uniform intersecting families are stars. Improving their result, we show that the same conclusion holds for $n\geq 2k+ 100\ln k$. Our proof uses, among others, Sapozhenko's graph container lemma and the Das-Tran removal lemma.

Abstract:Two families $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are cross-intersecting if $A\cap B\ne \emptyset$ for any $A\in \mathcal{A}$ and $B\in \mathcal{B}$. We call $t$ families $\mathcal{A}_1, \mathcal{A}_2,\dots, \mathcal{A}_t$ pairwise cross-intersecting families if $\mathcal{A}_i$ and $\mathcal{A}_j$ are cross-intersecting when $1\le i<j \le t$. Additionally, if $\mathcal{A}_j\ne \emptyset$ for each $j\in [t]$, then we say that $\mathcal{A}_1, \mathcal{A}_2,\dots, \mathcal{A}_t$ are non-empty pairwise cross-intersecting. Let $\mathcal{A}_1\subset{[n]\choose k_1}, \mathcal{A}_2\subset{[n]\choose k_2}, \dots, \mathcal{A}_t\subset{[n]\choose k_t}$ be non-empty pairwise cross-intersecting families with $t\geq 2$, $k_1\geq k_2\geq \cdots \geq k_t$, $n\ge k_1+k_2$ and $d_1, d_2, \dots, d_t$ be positive numbers. In this paper, we give a sharp upper bound of $\sum_{j=1}^td_j|\mathcal{A}_j|$ and characterize the families $\mathcal{A}_1, \mathcal{A}_2,\dots, \mathcal{A}_t$ attaining the upper bound. Our results unifies results of Frankl and Tokushige [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 61 (1992)], Shi, Frankl and Qian [Combinatorica 42 (2022)], Huang and Peng \cite{huangpeng}, and Zhang-Feng \cite{ZF2023}. Furthermore, our result can be applied in the treatment for some $n<k_1+k_2$ while all previous known results do not have such an application. In the proof, a result of Kruskal-Katona is applied to allow us to consider only families $\mathcal{A}_i$ whose elements are the first $|\mathcal{A}_i|$ elements in lexicographic order. We bound $\sum_{i=1}^t{|\mathcal{A}_i|}$ by a single variable function $g(R)$, where $R$ is the last element of $\mathcal{A}_1$ in lexicographic order. One crucial and challenge part is to verify that $-g(R)$ has unimodality. We think that the unimodality of functions in this paper are interesting in their own, in addition to the extremal result.

Abstract:For a family of sets $\mathcal{F}$, let $\omega(\mathcal{F}):=\sum_{\{A,B\}\subset \mathcal{F}}|A\cap B|$. In this paper, we prove that provided $n$ is sufficiently large, for any $\mathcal{F}\subset \binom{[n]}{k}$ with $|\mathcal{F}|=m$, $\omega(\mathcal{F})$ is maximized by the family consisting of the first $m$ sets in the lexicographical ordering on $\binom{[n]}{k}$. Compared to the maximum number of adjacent pairs in families, determined by Das, Gan and Sudakov in 2016, $\omega(\mathcal{F})$ distinguishes the contributions of intersections of different sizes. Then our results is an extension of Ahlswede and Katona's results in 1978, which determine the maximum number of adjacent edges in graphs. Besides, since $\omega(\mathcal{F})=\frac{1}{2}\left(\sum_{x\in [n]}|\{F\in \mathcal{F}:x\in F\}|^2-km\right)$ for $k$-uniform family with size $m$, our results also give a sharp upper bound of the sum of squares of degrees in a hypergraph.

Proof of Frankl's conjecture on cross-intersecting families

Abstract:Two families $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{G}$ are called cross-intersecting if for every $F\in \mathcal{F}$ and $G\in \mathcal{G}$, the intersection $F\cap G$ is non-empty. For any positive integers $n$ and $k$, let $\binom{[n]}{k}$ denote the family of all $k$-element subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Let $t, s, k, n$ be non-negative integers with $k \geq s+1$ and $n \geq 2 k+t$. In 2016, Frankl proved that if $\mathcal{F} \subseteq\binom{[n]}{k+t}$ and $\mathcal{G} \subseteq\binom{[n]}{k}$ are cross-intersecting families, and $\mathcal{F}$ is $(t+1)$-intersecting and $|\mathcal{F}| \geq 1$, then $|\mathcal{F}|+|\mathcal{G}| \leq\binom{n}{k}-\binom{n-k-t}{k}+1$. Furthermore, Frankl conjectured that under an additional condition $\binom{[k+t+s]} {k+t}\subseteq\mathcal{F}$, the following inequality holds: $$ |\mathcal{F}|+|\mathcal{G}| \leq\binom{k+t+s}{k+t}+\binom{n}{k}-\sum_{i=0}^s\binom{k+t+s}{i}\binom{n-k-t-s}{k-i}. $$ In this paper, we prove this conjecture. The key ingredient is to establish a theorem for cross-intersecting families with a restricted universe. Moreover, we derive an analogous result for this conjecture.

On a conjecture of Tokushige for cross-$t$-intersecting families

Abstract:Two families of sets $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are called cross-$t$-intersecting if $|A\cap B|\ge t$ for all $A\in \mathcal{A}$, $B\in \mathcal{B}$. An active problem in extremal set theory is to determine the maximum product of sizes of cross-$t$-intersecting families. This incorporates the classical Erdős--Ko--Rado (EKR) problem. In the present paper, we prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are cross-$t$-intersecting families of $\binom {[n]}k$ with $k\ge t\ge 3$ and $n\ge (t+1)(k-t+1)$, then $|\mathcal{A}||\mathcal{B}|\le {\binom{n-t}{k-t}}^2$; moreover, if $n>(t+1)(k-t+1)$, then equality holds if and only if $\mathcal{A}=\mathcal{B}$ is a maximum $t$-intersecting subfamily of $\binom{[n]}{k}$. This confirms a conjecture of Tokushige for $t\ge 3$.

A result for hemi-bundled cross-intersecting families

Abstract:Two families $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{G}$ are called cross-intersecting if for every $F\in \mathcal{F}$ and $G\in \mathcal{G}$, the intersection $F\cap G$ is non-empty. It is significant to determine the maximum sum of sizes of cross-intersecting families under the additional assumption that one of the two families is intersecting. Such a pair of families is said to be hemi-bundled. In particular, Frankl (2016) proved that for $k \geq 1, t\ge 0$ and $n \geq 2 k+t$, if $\mathcal{F} \subseteq\binom{[n]}{k+t}$ and $\mathcal{G} \subseteq\binom{[n]}{k}$ are cross-intersecting families, in which $\mathcal{F}$ is non-empty and $(t+1)$-intersecting, then $|\mathcal{F}|+|\mathcal{G}| \leq\binom{n}{k}-\binom{n-k-t}{k}+1$. This bound can be attained when $\mathcal{F}$ consists of a single set. In this paper, we generalize this result under the constraint $|\mathcal{F}| \geq r$ for every $r\leq n-k-t+1$. Moreover, we investigate the stability results of Katona's theorem for non-uniform families with the $s$-union property. Our result extends the stabilities established by Frankl (2017) and Li and Wu (2024). As applications, we revisit a recent result of Frankl and Wang (2024) as well as a result of Kupavskii (2018). Furthermore, we determine the extremal families in these two results.

On set systems with strongly restricted intersections

Abstract:Set systems with strongly restricted intersections, called $\alpha$-intersecting families for a vector $\alpha$, were introduced recently as a generalization of several well-studied intersecting families including the classical oddtown and eventown. Given a binary vector $\alpha=(a_1, \ldots, a_k)$, a collection $\mathcal F$ of subsets over an $n$ element set is an $\alpha$-intersecting family modulo $2$ if for each $i=1,2,\ldots,k$, all $i$-wise intersections of distinct members in $\mathcal F$ have sizes with the same parity as $a_i$. Let $f_\alpha(n)$ denote the maximum size of such a family. In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of $f_\alpha(n)$ when $n$ goes to infinity. We show that if $t$ is the maximum integer such that $a_t=1$ and $2t\leq k$, then $f_{\alpha(n)} \sim {(t! n)}^{\frac 1 t}$. More importantly, we show that for any constant $c$, as the length $k$ goes larger, $f_\alpha(n)$ is upper bounded by $O (n^c)$ for almost all $\alpha$. Equivalently, no matter what $k$ is, there are only finitely many $\alpha$ satisfying $f_\alpha(n)=\Omega (n^c)$. This answers an open problem raised by Johnston and O'Neill in 2023. All of our results can be generalized to modulo $p$ setting for any prime $p$ smoothly.

The maximal sum of sizes of cross intersecting families for multisets

Abstract:Let $k$, $t$ and $m$ be positive integers. A $k$-multiset of $[m]$ is a collection of $k$ elements of $[m]$ with repetition and without ordering. We use $\left(\binom {[m]}{k}\right)$ to denote all the $k$-multisets of $[m]$. Two multiset families $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{G}$ in $\left(\binom {[m]}{k}\right)$ are called cross $t$-intersecting if $|F\cap G|\geq t$ for any $F\in \mathcal{F}$ and $G\in \mathcal{G}$. Moreover, if $\mathcal{F}=\mathcal{G}$, we call $\mathcal{F}$ a $t$-intersecting family in $\left(\binom {[m]}{k}\right)$. Meagher and Purdy~(2011) presented a multiset variant of Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem for $t$-intersecting family in $\left(\binom {[m]}{k}\right)$ when $t=1$, and Füredi, Gerbner and Vizer~(2016) extended this result to general $t\ge 2$ with $m\geq 2k-t$, verified a conjecture proposed by Meagher and Purdy~(2011). In this paper, we determine the maximum sum of cross $t$-intersecting families $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{G}$ in $\left(\binom {[m]}{k}\right)$ and characterize the extremal families achieving the upper bound. For $t=1$ and $m\geq k+1$, the method involves constructing a bijection between multiset family and set family while preserving the intersecting relation. For $t\ge 2$ and $m\ge 2k-t$, we employ a shifting operation, specifically the down-compression, which was initiated by Füredi, Gerbner and Vizer~(2016). These results extend the sum-type intersecting theorem for set families originally given by Hilton and Milner (1967).

Exact extremal non-trivial cross-intersecting families

Abstract:Two families $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ of sets are called cross-intersecting if each pair of sets $A\in \mathcal{A}$ and $B\in \mathcal{B}$ has nonempty intersection. Let $\cal{A}$ and ${\cal B}$ be two cross-intersecting families of $k$-subsets and $\ell$-subsets of $[n]$. Matsumoto and Tokushige [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 52 (1989) 90--97] studied the extremal problem of the size $|\cal{A}||\cal{B}|$ and obtained the uniqueness of extremal families whenever $n\ge 2 \ell\ge 2k$, building on the work of Pyber. The problem of determining the maximal size of a family $\mathcal{F}$ that is both $r_1$-wise $k_1$-intersecting and $r_2$-wise $k_2$-intersecting was raised in 2019 by Frankl and Kupavskii [1]. They proved the surprising result that, for $(r_1,k_1) = (3,1)$ and $(r_2,k_2) = (2,32)$ then this maximum is at most $2^{n-2}$, and conjectured the same holds if $k_2$ is replaced by $3$. In this paper we shall not only prove this conjecture but we shall also determine the exact maximum for $(r_1,k_1) = (3,1)$ and $(r_2,k_2) = (2,3)$ for all $n$.
