Abstract:The goal of this master thesis is to give a different perspective on the problem of quasi-particle tunneling in Fractional Quantum Hall liquids by using a typical Quantum Optics tool such as the Truncated Wigner Approximation. Our novel approach provides a mapping of the quasi-particle tunneling problem into a stochastic classical field problem. This offers an intuitive physical picture which allows us to recover non-trivial features of FQH physics and predict novel phenomena.

Abstract:We present comprehensive results on the edge-mode velocities in a quantum Hall droplet with realistic interaction and confinement at various filling fractions. We demonstrate that the charge-mode velocity scales roughly with the valence Landau level filling fraction and the Coulomb energy in the corresponding Landau level. At Landau level filling fraction nu = 5/2, the stark difference between the bosonic charge-mode velocity and the fermionic neutral-mode velocity can manifest itself in the thermal smearing of the non-Abelian quasiparticle interference. We estimate the dependence of the coherence temperature on the confining potential strength, which may be tunable experimentally to enhance the non-Abelian state.
Electronic wave-packets in integer quantum Hall edge channels: relaxation and dissipative effects

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the evolution of the peak height of an energy resolved electronic wave-packets ballistically propagating along integer quantum Hall edge channels at filling factor $\nu=2$. This is ultimately related to the elastic scattering amplitude for the fermionic excitations evaluated at different injection energy. We investigate this quantity assuming a short range capacitive coupling between the edges. Moreover, we also take into account phenomenologically the possibility of energy dissipation towards additional degrees of freedom both linear and quadratic in the injection energy. Comparing with recent experimental data, we rule out the non-dissipative case as well a quadratic dependence of the dissipation, indicating a linear energy loss rate as the best candidate to describe the behavior of the quasi-particle peak at short enough propagation lengths.

Abstract:We study the effect of electron-electron interaction on the charge and spin structures at the edge of integer quantum Hall liquids, under three different kinds of confining potentials. Our exact diagonalization calculation for small systems indicates that the low energy excitations of \nu=1 ferromagnetic state are bosonic edge spin waves. Instabilities of the ferromagnetic state with altering confinement strength result from the softening of these edge spin waves, and formation of edge spin textures. In \nu\lesssim 2 regime, exact diagonalization on edge electron systems indicates that compact Hartree-Fock states with different total spin always become ground states in some regions of parameter space, and the ground states appear in between two compact states are their edge spin waves. The initial \nu=2 instability is toward the compact state with total spin 1. Larger systems are studied using a microscopic trial wave functions, and some quantitative predictions on the edge instabilities for a certain type of confining potential are reached in the thermodynamic limit.

Abstract:Direct transitions, driven by disorder, from several integral quantum Hall states to an insulator have been observed in experiment. This finding is enigmatic in light of a theoretical phase diagram, based on rather general considerations, that predicts a sequence of transitions in which the integer n characterizing the Hall conductivity is reduced successively by unity, eventually going from n=1 into an insulator. In this work, we suggest that the direct transition occurs because, in certain parameter regime, the edge states of different Landau levels are strongly coupled and behave as a single edge state. It is indicated under what conditions successive transitions may be seen.

Abstract:Commencing with the composite fermion description of the ν=5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect, we study the dynamics of the edge neutral Majorana fermions. We confirm that these neutral modes are chiral and show that a conventional p-wave pairing interaction between CFs does not contribute to the dynamics of the edge neutral fermions. We find an important bilinear coupling between the charged and neutral modes. We show that owing to this coupling, the dispersion of the neutral modes is linear and their velocities are proportional to the wave vector of the charged mode. This dynamic origin of the motion of the edge Majorana fermions was never expected before.

Abstract:The interplay of electron-electron interaction and confining potential can lead to the reconstruction of fractional quantum Hall edges. We have performed exact diagonalization studies on microscopic models of fractional quantum Hall liquids, in finite-size systems with disk geometry, and found numerical evidence of edge reconstruction under rather general conditions. In the present work we have taken into account effects such as layer thickness and Landau-level mixing, which are found to be of quantitative importance in edge physics. Due to edge reconstruction, additional nonchiral edge modes arise for both incompressible and compressible states. These additional modes couple to electromagnetic fields and thus can be detected in microwave conductivity measurements. They are also expected to affect the exponent of electron Green's function, which has been measured in tunneling experiments. We have studied in this work the electric dipole spectral function that is directly related to the microwave conductivity measurement. Our results are consistent with the enhanced microwave conductivity observed in experiments performed on samples with an array of antidots at low temperatures, and its suppression at higher temperatures. We also discuss the effects of the edge reconstruction on the single-electron spectral function at the edge.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive numerical study of a microscopic model of the fractional quantum Hall system at filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}=5∕2$, based on the disk geometry. Our model includes Coulomb interaction and a semirealistic confining potential. We also mix in a three-body interaction in some cases to help elucidate the physics. We obtain a phase diagram, discuss the conditions under which the ground state can be described by the Moore-Read state, and study its competition with neighboring stripe phases. We also study quasihole excitations and edge excitations in the Moore-Read-like state. From the evolution of the edge spectrum, we obtain the velocities of the charge and neutral edge modes, which turn out to be very different. This separation of velocities is a source of decoherence for a non-Abelian quasihole and/or quasiparticle (with charge $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}e∕4$) when propagating at the edge; using numbers obtained from a specific set of parameters, we estimate the decoherence length to be around $4\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$. This sets an upper bound for the separation of the two point contacts in a double point-contact interferometer, designed to detect the non-Abelian nature of such quasiparticles. We also find a state that is a potential candidate for the recently proposed anti-Pfaffian state. We find the speculated anti-Pfaffian state is favored in weak confinement (smooth edge), while the Moore-Read Pfaffian state is favored in strong confinement (sharp edge).
Edge-induced Topological Phase Transition of the Quantum Hall State at Half Filling

Abstract:We show that in quantum Hall systems at half-filling, edge potentials alone can drive transitions between the Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian topological phases. We conjecture this is true in realistic systems even in the presence of weak bulk interactions that break the particle-hole symmetry. The strong effects of edge potentials could be understood from different topological shifts of competing phases, manifested on the disk geometry as the variation of orbital numbers at fixed number of particles. In particular, we show analytically particle-hole conjugation of Hamiltonians on the disk is equivalent to the tuning of edge potentials, which allows us to explicitly demonstrate the phase transition numerically. The importance of edge potentials in various experimental contexts, including the recently discovered particle-hole symmetric phase is also discussed.

Abstract:We study the nu=1/3 quantum Hall state in the presence of random disorder. We calculate the topologically invariant Chern number, which is the only quantity known at present to distinguish unambiguously between insulating and current carrying states in an interacting system. The mobility gap can be determined numerically this way and is found to agree with experimental value semiquantitatively. As the disorder strength increases towards a critical value, both the mobility gap and plateau width narrow continuously and ultimately collapse, leading to an insulating phase.
Nonlinear edge transport in a quantum Hall system

Abstract:Nonlinear transport phenomena in condensed matter reflect the geometric nature, quantum coherence, and many-body correlation of electronic states. Electric currents in solids are classified into (i) Ohmic current, (ii) supercurrent, and (iii) geometric or topological current. While the nonlinear current-voltage $(I$-$V)$ characteristics of the former two categories have been extensive research topics recently, those of the last category remains unexplored. Among them, the quantum Hall current is a representative example. Realized in two-dimensional electronic systems under a strong magnetic field, the topological protection quantizes the Hall conductance in the unit of $e^2/h$ ($e$: elementary charge, $h$: Planck constant), of which the edge transport picture gives a good account. Here, we theoretically study the nonlinear $I$-$V_\text{H}$ characteristic of the edge transport up to third order in $V_\text{H}$. We find that nonlinearity arises in the Hall response from electron-electron interaction between the counterpropagating edge channels with the nonlinear energy dispersions. We also discuss possible experimental observations.

Quantum nonlinear optics on the edge of small lattice fractional quantum Hall fluids

Abstract:We study the quantum dynamics of the edge modes of lattice fractional quantum Hall liquids in response to time-dependent external potentials. We show that the nonlinear chiral Luttinger liquid theory provides a quantitatively accurate description even for the small lattice geometries away from the continuum limit that are available in state-of-the-art experiments. Experimentally accessible signatures of the quantized value of the bulk transverse Hall conductivity are identified both in the linear and the non-linear response to an external excitation. The strong nonlinearity induced by the open boundaries is responsible for sizable quantum blockade effects, leading to the generation of nonclassical states of the edge modes.

Abstract:Edge reconstruction has been a well-known effect for integer quantum Hall liquids in the presence of both electron interactions and a confining potential generated by charged background. At more generic fractional fillings, we point out that confined two-dimensional interacting electrons can exhibit the similar reconstruction effect. Our exact diagonalization results show that, in a fractional quantum Hall system with a sharp cleaved edge potential, the electron density oscillation near the edge increases with the distance between the electron gas and the background charge layer. As a results, the outermost hump can detach from the bulk beyond certain point. We suggest that the edge reconstruction effect is relevant to the recent edge tunneling experiments,1 as well as the microwave absorption experiment on two-dimensional electrons in an antidot array.2 Calculating the finite-temperature density profiles, we estimate the temperature above which the edge reconstruction disappears to further discuss the relevance to the microwave absorption experiment.

Abstract:We present a numerical study of fractional quantum Hall liquid at Landau-level filling factor nu=2/3 in a microscopic model including long-range Coulomb interaction and edge confining potential based on the disk geometry. We find that the ground state is accurately described by the particle-hole conjugate of a nu=1/3 Laughlin state. We also find that there are two counterpropagating edge modes, and the velocity of the forward-propagating mode is larger than the backward-propagating mode. The velocities have opposite responses to the change in the background confinement potential. On the other hand changing the two-body Coulomb potential has qualitatively the same effect on the velocities; for example, we find that increasing layer thickness (which softens of the Coulomb interaction) reduces both the forward mode and the backward mode velocities.
Edge reconstruction of fractional quantum Hall liquids with spin degrees of freedom

Abstract:We study the interplay of confining potential, electron-electron interaction, and Zeeman splitting at the edges of fractional quantum Hall liquids, using numerical diagonalization of finite-size systems. The filling factors studied include 1/3, 5/2, 2/5, and 2/3. In the absence of Zeeman splitting and an edge, the first two have spin fully polarized ground states, while the latter two have singlet ground states. We find that with few exceptions, edge instabilities of these systems are triggered by softening of edge spin waves for Abelian fractional quantum Hall liquids (1/3, 2/5 and 2/3 liquids), and are triggered by softening of edge magnetoplasmon excitations for non-Abelian 5/2 liquid at the smoother confinement side. Phase diagrams are obtained in the accessible parameter spaces.

Abstract:Using the random matrix theory, we investigate the ensemble statistics of edge transport of a quantum spin Hall insulator with multiple edge states in the presence of quenched disorder. Dorokhov-Mello-Pereyra-Kumar equation applicable for such a system is established. It is found that a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulator is effectively a new type of one-dimensional (1D) quantum conductor with the different ensemble statistics from that of the ordinary 1D quantum conductor or the insulator with an even number of Kramers edge pairs. The ensemble statistics provides a physical manifestation of the Z2-classification for the time-reversal invariant insulators.

Abstract:Analysis of edge-state energies in the integer quantum Hall effect is carried out within the semiclassical approximation. When the system is wide so that each edge can be considered separatly, this problem is equivalent to that of a one dimensional harmonic oscillator centered at x=x_c and an infinite wall at x=0, and appears in numerous physical contexts. The eigenvalues E_n(x_c) for a given quantum number n are solutions of the equation S(E,x_c)=\pi [n+ \gamma(E,x_c)] where S is the WKB action and 0<\gamma<1 encodes all the information on the connection procedure at the turning points. A careful implication of the WKB connection formulae results in an excellent approximation to the exact energy eigenvalues. The dependence of \gamma [E_n(x_c),x_c] \equiv \gamma_c (x_c) on x_c is analyzed between its two extreme values 1/2 as x_c goes to -infinity far inside the sample and 3/4 as x_c goes to infinity far outside the sample. The edge-state energies E_n(x_c) obey an almost exact scaling law of the form E_n(x_c)=4 [n+\gamma_n(x_c)] f(x_c/4 n +3) and the scaling function f(y) is explicitly elucidated

Abstract:We study the ground state and low-energy excitations of fractional quantum Hall systems on a disk at a filling fraction nu = 5/2, with Coulomb interaction and a background confining potential. We find the Moore-Read ground state is stable within a finite but narrow window in parameter space. The corresponding low-energy excitations contain a fermionic branch and a bosonic branch, with widely different velocities. A short-range repulsive potential can stabilize a charge +e/4 quasihole at the center, leading to a different edge excitation spectrum due to the change of boundary conditions for Majorana fermions, clearly indicating the non-Abelian nature of the quasihole.

Abstract:We present a novel theoretical approach to incorporate electronic interactions in the study of two-dimensional topological insulators. By exploiting the correspondence between edge state physics and entanglement spectrum in gapped topological systems, we deconstruct the system into one-dimensional channels. This framework enables a simple and elegant inclusion of fermionic interactions into the discussion of topological insulators. We apply this approach to the Kane-Mele model with interactions and magnetic impurities.
