Abstract:Assuming as hypotheses the results proved numerically by Chang et al. \cite{Chang} for the exponent $p\in (3,5)$, we prove that some of the ground states of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with pure power nonlinearity of exponent $p$ in the line are asymptotically stable for a certain set of values of the exponent $p$ where the FGR occurs by means of a discrete mode 3rd or 4th order power interaction with the continuous mode. For the 3rd the result is true for generic $p$ while for the 4th order case we assume that there are $p$'s satisfying Fermi Golden rule and the non-resonance condition of the threshold of the continuous spectrum of the linearization. The argument is similar to our recent result valid for $p$ near 3 contained in \cite{CM24D1}.

Abstract:We continue our series devoted, after references \cite{CM24D1} and \cite{CM243}, at proving the asymptotic stability of ground states of the pure power Nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the line. Here we assume some results on the spectrum of the linearization obtained computationally by Chang et al. \cite{Chang} and then we explore the equation for exponents $p\le 2$ sufficiently close to 2. The ensuing loss of regularity of the nonlinearity requires new arguments.

A review on asymptotic stability of solitary waves in nonlinear dispersive problems in dimension one

Abstract:We review asymptotic stability of solitary waves for nonlinear dispersive equations set on the line. Our focus is threefold: first, the nonlinear Schrodinger equation; second, the notion of full asymptotic stability (which states that perturbations of a solitary wave decompose globally into a solitary wave and a decaying solution); and third, spectral methods. Besides this focus, we summarize the state of the art in a broader context, including nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations, the notion of local asymptotic stability, and virial methods.

Asymptotic Stability of Solitary Waves for One Dimensional Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations

Abstract:We show global asymptotic stability of solitary waves of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation in space dimension 1. Furthermore, the radiation is shown to exhibit long range scattering if the nonlinearity is cubic at the origin, or standard scattering if it is higher order. We handle a general nonlinearity without any vanishing condition, requiring that the linearized operator around the solitary wave has neither nonzero eigenvalues, nor threshold resonances. Initial data are chosen in a neighborhood of the solitary waves in the natural space $H^1 \cap L^{2,1}$ (where the latter is the weighted $L^2$ space). The proof relies on the analysis of resonances as seen through the distorted Fourier transform, combined for the first time with modulation and renormalization techniques.

Abstract:We consider the Hartree and Schrödinger equations describing the time evolution of wave functions of infinitely many interacting fermions in three-dimensional space. These equations can be formulated using density operators, and they have infinitely many stationary solutions. In this paper, we prove the asymptotic stability of a wide class of stationary solutions. We emphasize that our result includes Fermi gas at zero temperature. This is one of the most important steady states from the physics point of view; however, its asymptotic stability has been left open after Lewin and Sabin first formulated this stability problem and gave significant results in their seminal work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1310.0604" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1310.0604">arXiv:1310.0604</a>].

Abstract:For the Schrödinger equation with a cubic-quintic, focusing-focusing nonlinearity in one space dimension, this article proves the local asymptotic completeness of the family of small standing solitary waves under even perturbations in the energy space. For this model, perturbative of the integrable cubic Schrödinger equation for small solutions, the linearized equation around a small solitary wave has an internal mode, whose contribution to the dynamics is handled by the Fermi golden rule.

Abstract:For exponents $p$ satisfying $0<|p-3|\ll 1$ and only in the context of spatially even solutions we prove that the ground states of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with pure power nonlinearity of exponent $p$ in the line are asymptotically stable. The proof is similar to a related result of Martel, preprint <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2312.11016" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.11016">arXiv:2312.11016</a>, for a cubic quintic NLS. Here we modify the second part of Martel's argument, replacing the second virial inequality for a transformed problem with a smoothing estimate on the initial problem, appropriately tamed by multiplying the initial variables and equations by a cutoff.

Abstract:We study a coupled Schrödinger system with general nonlinearities. By using variational methods, we prove the existence and asymptotic behaviour of ground state solution for the system with periodic couplings. Moreover, we prove the existence and nonexistence of ground state solution for the system with non-periodic couplings via Nehari manifold method. Especially, the ground state solution with both nontrivial components is obtained, and the sign of nontrivial components is considered.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the asymptotic stability of nonlinear Schrodiger equations on star graphs, which partially solves an open problem in D. Noja . The essential ingredient of our proof is the dispersive estimate for the linearized operator around the soliton with Kirchhoff boundary condition. In order to obtain the dispersive estimates, we use the Born's series technique and scattering theory for the linearized operator.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the existence and asymptotic behavior of ground state solutions for a class of Hamiltonian elliptic system with Hardy potential. The resulting problem engages three major difficulties: one is that the associated functional is strongly indefinite, the second difficulty we must overcome lies in verifying the link geometry and showing the boundedness of Cerami sequences when the nonlinearity is different from the usual global super-quadratic condition. The third difficulty is singular potential, which does not belong to the Kato's class. These enable us to develop a direct approach and new tricks to overcome the difficulties caused by singularity of potential and the dropping of classical super-quadratic assumption on the nonlinearity. Our approach is based on non-Nehari method which developed recently, we establish some new existence results of ground state solutions of Nehari-Pankov type under some mild conditions, and analyze asymptotical behavior of ground state solutions.

Abstract:We consider ground states of the $N$ coupled fermionic nonlinear Schrödinger systems with the Coulomb potential $V(x)$ in the $L^2$-subcritical case. By studying the associated constraint variational problem, we prove the existence of ground states for the system with any parameter $\alpha>0$, which represents the attractive strength of the non-relativistic quantum particles. The limiting behavior of ground states for the system is also analyzed as $\alpha\to\infty$, where the mass concentrates at one of the singular points for the Coulomb potential $V(x)$.

Abstract:As a continuation of \cite{me}, we consider ground states of the $N$ coupled fermionic nonlinear Schrödinger system with a parameter $a $ and the Coulomb potential $V(x)$ in the $L^2$-critical case, where $a>0$ represents the attractive strength of the quantum particles. For any given $N\in\mathbb{N}^+$, we prove that the system admits ground states, if and only if the attractive strength $a$ satisfies $0<a<a^*_N$, where the critical constant $0<a^*_N<\infty$ is the same as the best constant of a dual finite-rank Lieb-Thirring inequality. By developing the so-called blow-up analysis of many-body fermionic problems, we also prove the mass concentration behavior of ground states for the system as $a\nearrow a_N^*$.

Abstract:We have developed a method for electrical polarization of nuclear spins in quantum Hall systems. In a breakdown regime of odd-integer quantum Hall effect (QHE), excitation of electrons to the upper Landau subband with opposite spin polarity dynamically polarizes nuclear spins through the hyperfine interaction. The polarized nuclear spins in turn accelerate the QHE breakdown, leading to hysteretic voltage-current characteristics of the quantum Hall conductor.

On non-stability of one-dimensional non-periodic ground states

Abstract:We address the problem of stability of one-dimensional non-periodic ground-state configurations with respect to finite-range perturbations of interactions in classical lattice-gas models. We show that a relevant property of non-periodic ground-state configurations in this context is their homogeneity. The so-called strict boundary condition says that the number of finite patterns of a configuration have bounded fluctuations on any finite subsets of the lattice. We show that if the strict boundary condition is not satisfied, then in order for non-periodic ground-state configurations to be stable, interactions between particles should not decay faster than $1/r^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha>2$. In the Thue-Morse ground state, number of finite patterns may fluctuate as much as the logarithm of the lenght of a lattice subset. We show that the Thue-Morse ground state is unstable for any $\alpha >1$ with respect to arbitrarily small two-body interactions favoring the presence of molecules consisting of two spins up or down. We also investigate Sturmian systems defined by irrational rotations on the circle. They satisfy the strict boundary condition but nevertheless they are unstable for $\alpha>3$.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a resonance problem, in a generic regime, in the consideration of relaxation of ground states of semilinear Schrodinger equations. Different from previous results, our consideration includes the presence of resonance, resulted by overlaps of frequencies of different states. All the known key results, proved under non-resonance conditions, have been recovered uniformly. These are achieved by better understandings of normal form transformation and Fermi Golden rule. Especially, we find that if certain denominators are zeros (or small), resulted by the presence of resonances (or close to it), then cancellations between terms make the corresponding numerators proportionally small.
