Abstract:We describe the weak polynomial identities of the Jordan algebra of symmetric $2\times 2$ matrices over a field of characteristic zero. The corresponding weak verbal ideal is generated by the standard identity of degree four and the metabelian identity.

Abstract:In this paper we study algebras acted on by a finite group $G$ and the corresponding $G$-identities. Let $M_2( \mathbb{C})$ be the $2\times 2$ matrix algebra over the field of complex numbers $ \mathbb{C}$ and let $sl_2( \mathbb{C})$ be the Lie algebra of traceless matrices in $M_2( \mathbb{C})$. Assume that $G$ is a finite group acting as a group of automorphisms on $M_2( \mathbb{C})$. These groups were described in the Nineteenth century, they consist of the finite subgroups of $PGL_2( \mathbb{C})$, which are, up to conjugacy, the cyclic groups $ \mathbb{Z}_n$, the dihedral groups $D_n$ (of order $2n$), the alternating groups $ A_4$ and $A_5$, and the symmetric group $S_4$. The $G$-identities for $M_2( \mathbb{C})$ were described by Berele. The finite groups acting on $sl_2( \mathbb{C})$ are the same as those acting on $M_2( \mathbb{C})$. The $G$-identities for the Lie algebra of the traceless $sl_2( \mathbb{C})$ were obtained by Mortari and by the second author. We study the weak $G$-identities of the pair $(M_2( \mathbb{C}), sl_2( \mathbb{C}))$, when $G$ is a finite group. Since every automorphism of the pair is an automorphism for $M_2( \mathbb{C})$, it follows from this that $G$ is one of the groups above. In this paper we obtain bases of the weak $G$-identities for the pair $(M_2( \mathbb{C}), sl_2( \mathbb{C}))$ when $G$ is a finite group acting as a group of automorphisms.

Abstract:Let $UT_2$ be the algebra of $2\times 2$ upper triangular matrices over a field $F$ of characteristic zero. Here we study the generalized polynomial identities of $UT_2$, i.e., identical relations holding for $UT_2$ regarded as $UT_2$-algebra. We determine a set of two generators of the $T_{UT_2}$-ideal of generalized polynomial identities of $UT_2$ and compute the exact values of the corresponding sequence of generalized codimensions. Moreover, we give a complete description of the space of multilinear generalized identities in $n$ variables in the language of Young diagrams through the representation theory of the symmetric group $S_n$. Finally, we prove that, unlike in the ordinary case, the generalized variety of $UT_2$-algebras generated by $UT_2$ has no almost polynomial growth; nevertheless, we exhibit two distinct generalized varieties of almost polynomial growth.

Abstract:Let $M_{1,2}(F)$ be the algebra of $3 \times 3$ matrices with orthosymplectic superinvolution $*$ over a field $F$ of characteristic zero. We study the $*$-identities of this algebra through the representation theory of the group $\mathbb{H}_n = (\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2) \sim S_n$. We decompose the space of multilinear $*$-identities of degree $n$ into the sum of irreducibles under the $\mathbb{H}_n$-action in order to study the irreducible characters appearing in this decomposition with non-zero multiplicity. Moreover, by using the representation theory of the general linear group, we determine all the $*$-polynomial identities of $M_{1,2}(F)$ up to degree $3$.

Abstract:This article aims to present novel identities for elementary and complete symmetric polynomials and explore their applications, particularly to generalized Vandermonde and special tri-diagonal matrices. It also extends existing results on Jacobi polynomials $ P_n^{(\alpha, \beta)}(x) $ and introduces an explicit formula based on the zeros of $ P_{n-1}^{(\alpha, \beta)}(x) $. Several illustrative examples are included.

Abstract:We compute minimal sets of generators for the S_n-modules (n <= 4) of multilinear polynomial identities of arity n satisfied by the Jordan product and the Jordan diproduct (resp. pre-Jordan product) in every triassociative (resp. tridendriform) algebra. These identities define Jordan trialgebras and post-Jordan algebras: Jordan analogues of the Lie trialgebras and post-Lie algebras introduced by Dotsenko et al., Pei et al., Vallette & Loday. We include an extensive review of analogous structures existing in the literature, and their interrelations, in order to identify the gaps filled by our two new varieties of algebras. We use computer algebra (linear algebra over finite fields, representation theory of symmetric groups), to verify in both cases that every polynomial identity of arity <= 6 is a consequence of those of arity <= 4. We conjecture that in both cases the next independent identities have arity 8, imitating the Glennie identities for Jordan algebras. We formulate our results as a commutative square of operad morphisms, which leads to the conjecture that the squares in a much more general class are also commutative.

Abstract:For two real symmetric matrices, their eigenvalue configuration is the arrangement of their eigenvalues on the real line. In this paper, we provide quantifier-free necessary and sufficient conditions for two symmetric matrices to realize a given eigenvalue configuration. The basic idea is to generate a set of polynomials in the entries of the two matrices whose roots can be counted to uniquely determine the eigenvalue configuration. This result can be seen as ageneralization of Descartes' rule of signs to the case of two real univariate polynomials.

Abstract:For two real symmetric matrices, their eigenvalue configuration is the arrangement of their eigenvalues on the real line. We study the problem of determining a quantifier-free necessary and sufficient condition for two real symmetric matrices to realize a given eigenvalue configuration as a generalization of Descartes' rule of signs. We exploit the combinatorial properties of our definition for eigenvalue configuration to reduce a two-polynomial root counting problem into several single-polynomial root counting problems of symmetric polynomials. We then leverage the fundamental theorem of symmetric polynomials to derive a final quantifier-free necessary and sufficient condition for two real symmetric matrices to realize a given eigenvalue configuration.

Abstract:The Jacobson Coordinatization Theorem describes the structure of unitary Jordan algebras containing the algebra $H_n(F)$ of symmetric nxn matrices over a field F with the same identity element, for $n\geq 3$. In this paper we extend the Jacobson Coordinatization Theorem for n=2. Specifically, we prove that if J is a unitary Jordan algebra containing the Jordan matrix algebra $H_2(F)$ with the same identity element, then J has a form $J=H_2(F)\otimes A_0+k\otimes A_1$, where $A=A_0+A_1$ is a $Z_2$-graded Jordan algebra with a partial odd Leibniz bracket {,} an $k=e_{12}-e_{21}\in M_2(F)$ with the multiplication given by $(a\otimes b)(c\otimes d)=ac\otimes bd + [a,c]\otimes \{b,d\},$ the commutator [a,c] is taken in $M_2(F)$.

Abstract:A symmetric ideal is an ideal in a polynomial ring which is stable under all permutations of the variables. In this paper we initiate a global study of zero-dimensional symmetric ideals. By this we mean a geometric study of the invariant Hilbert schemes $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ parametrizing symmetric subschemes of $\mathbb{C}^n$ whose coordinate rings, as $S_n$-modules, are isomorphic to a given representation $\rho$. In the case that $\rho = M^\lambda$ is a permutation module corresponding to certain special types of partitions $\lambda$ of $n$, we prove that $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ is irreducible or even smooth. We also prove irreducibility whenever $\dim \rho \leq 2n$ and the invariant Hilbert scheme is non-empty. In this same range, we classify all homogeneous symmetric ideals and decide which of these define singular points of $\mathrm{Hilb}_{\rho}^{S_n}(\mathbb{C}^n)$. A central tool is the combinatorial theory of higher Specht polynomials.

On Newton's identities in positive characteristic

Abstract:Newton's identities provide a way to express elementary symmetric polynomials in terms of power polynomials over fields of characteristic zero. In this article, we study the failure of this relation in positive characteristic and what can be recovered. In particular, we show how one can write the elementary symmetric polynomials as rational functions in the power polynomials over any commutative unital ring.

Abstract:The paper develops elementary linear algebra methods to compute the determinants of the tensor symmetrizations of quadratic and hermitian forms over fields of good characteristic. Explicit results are given for the partitions $(n)$, $(1^n)$, $(2,1^{n-2})$ and $(3,1^{n-3})$ as well as for all partitions of $n\leq 7$. For orthogonal groups these symmetrizations are not irreducible and we continue to find the determinants of their irreducible constituents, the refined symmetrizations, over fields of characteristic 0.

Abstract:We study the real algebraic variety of real symmetric matrices with eigenvalue multiplicities determined by a partition. We present formulas for the dimension and Euclidean distance degree. We give a parametrization by rational functions. For small matrices, we provide equations; for larger matrices, we explain how to use representation theory to find equations. We describe the ring of invariants under the action of the orthogonal group. For the subvariety of diagonal matrices, we give the degree.

Abstract:We study the graded polynomial identities with a homogeneous involution on the algebra of upper triangular matrices endowed with a fine group grading. We compute their polynomial identities and a basis of the relatively free algebra, considering an arbitrary base field. We obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the codimension sequence when the characteristic of the base field is zero. As a consequence, we compute the exponent and the second exponent of the same algebra endowed with any group grading and any homogeneous involution.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field of characteristic 0, and let $E$ be the infinite-dimensional Grassmann algebra over $K$. We consider $E$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded algebra, where the grading is given by the vector subspaces $E_0$ and $E_1$, consisting of monomials of even and odd lengths, respectively. Thus, if $A = A_0 \oplus A_1$ is an associative $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded algebra, we can consider the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded algebra $A \hat{\otimes} E = (A_0 \otimes E_0) \oplus (A_1 \otimes E_1)$. In case both $E$ and $A$ are endowed with superinvolutions, we can define a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded involution on $A \hat{\otimes} E$ induced by the respective superinvolutions. In this paper, we consider the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded matrix algebras $M_{1,1}(K)$, $UT_{1,1}(K)$, and $UT_{(0,1,0)}(K)$ endowed with superinvolutions. We shall provide a description of the polynomial identities and the cocharacter sequences of $M_{1,1}(K)\hat{\otimes} E$, $UT_{1,1}(K)\hat{\otimes} E$, and $UT_{(0,1,0)}(K)\hat{\otimes} E$, considering these resulting algebras as $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded algebras with graded involution.

Two-Term Polynomial Identities

Abstract:We study algebras satisfying a two-term multilinear identity, namely one of the form $x_1\cdots x_n=qx_{\sigma(1)}\cdots x_{\sigma(n)}$, where $q$ is a parameter from the base field. We show that such algebras with $q=1$ and $\sigma$ not fixing~1 or~$n$ are eventually commutative in the sense that the equality $x_1\cdots x_k =x_{\tau(1)}\cdots x_{\tau(k)}$ holds for $k$ large enough and all permutations $\tau\in S_k$. Calling the minimal such~$k$ the degree of eventual commutativity, we prove that $k$ is never more than~$2n-3,$ and that this bound is sharp. For various natural examples, we prove that $k$ can be taken to be $n+1$ or $n+2$. In the case when $q\ne1$, we establish that the algebra must be nilpotent.

Abstract:Building on the classification of all characteristic polynomials of integer symmetric matrices having small span (span less than 4), we obtain a classification of small-span polynomials that are the characteristic polynomial of a Hermitian matrix over some quadratic integer ring. Taking quadratic integer rings as our base, we obtain as characteristic polynomials some low-degree small-span polynomials that are not the characteristic (or minimal) polynomial of any integer symmetric matrix.

Abstract:Abstract We study a class of combinatorially defined polynomial ideals that are generated by minors of a generic symmetric matrix. Included within this class are the symmetric determinantal ideals, the symmetric ladder determinantal ideals, and the symmetric Schubert determinantal ideals of A. Fink, J. Rajchgot, and S. Sullivant. Each ideal in our class is a type C analog of a Kazhdan–Lusztig ideal of A. Woo and A. Yong; that is, it is the scheme‐theoretic defining ideal of the intersection of a type C Schubert variety with a type C opposite Schubert cell, appropriately coordinatized. The Kazhdan–Lusztig ideals that arise are exactly those where the opposite cell is 123‐avoiding. Our main results include Gröbner bases for these ideals, prime decompositions of their initial ideals (which are Stanley–Reisner ideals of subword complexes), and combinatorial formulas for their multigraded Hilbert series in terms of pipe dreams.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a field of any characteristic, $V$ a finite-dimensional vector space over $k$, and $S^d(V^*)$ be the $d$-th symmetric power of the dual space $V^*$. Given a linear map $\varphi$ on $V$ and an eigenvector $w$ of $\varphi$, we prove that the pair $(\varphi, w)$ can be used to construct a new Lie algebra structure on $S^d(V^*)$. We prove that this Lie algebra structure is solvable, and in particular, it is nilpotent if $\varphi$ is a nilpotent map. We also classify the Lie algebras for all possible pairs $(\varphi, w)$, when $k=\mathbb{C}$ and $V$ is two-dimensional.

Abstract:We generalize a criterion for tight monomials of quantum enveloping algebras associated with symmetric generalized Cartan matrices and a monomial basis property of those associated with symmetric (classical) Cartan matrices to their respective symmetrizable case. We then link the two by establishing that a tight monomial is necessarily a monomial defined by a weakly distinguished word. As an application, we develop an algorithm to compute all tight monomials in the rank 2 Dynkin case.
