Abstract:It is proved that the braid monodromy group $\Gamma_{P(z)}$ of a polynomial $P(z)\in\mathbb C[z]$, $°P(z)=n$, is the braid group $\text{Br}_n$ if the polynomial $P(z)$ has $n-1$ distinct critical values.

Abstract:The space of monic squarefree polynomials has a stratification according to the multiplicities of the critical points, called the equicritical stratification. Tracking the positions of roots and critical points, there is a map from the fundamental group of a stratum into a braid group. We give a complete determination of this map. It turns out to be characterized by the geometry of the translation surface structure on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ induced by the logarithmic derivative $df/f$ of a polynomial in the stratum.

Abstract:The space of monic squarefree complex polynomials has a stratification according to the multiplicities of the critical points. We introduce a method to study these strata by way of the infinite-area translation surface associated to the logarithmic derivative $df/f$ of the polynomial. We determine the monodromy of these strata in the braid group, thus describing which braidings of the roots are possible if the orders of the critical points are required to stay fixed. Mirroring the story for holomorphic differentials on higher-genus surfaces, we find the answer is governed by the framing of the punctured disk induced by the horizontal foliation on the translation surface.

Abstract:Given a graph $\Gamma$ and a number $n$, the associated $n^{th}$ graph braid group $B_n(\Gamma)$ is the fundamental group of the unordered configuration space of $n$ points on $\Gamma$. Świątkowski showed that for a given $\Gamma$ and $n$ large enough, there is a free abelian subgroup of $B_n(\Gamma)$ of rank equal to the cohomological dimension of $B_n(\Gamma)$. In this note, we observe that at the cost of possibly adding additional points, we can find a subgroup of the same cohomological dimension which is a direct product of non-abelian free groups, and give some applications.

Braid groups and mapping class groups for 2-orbifolds

Abstract:The main result of this article is that pure orbifold braid groups fit into an exact sequence $1\rightarrow K\rightarrow\pi_1^{orb}(\Sigma_\Gamma(n-1+L))\xrightarrow{\iota_{\textrm{PZ}_n}}\textrm{PZ}_n(\Sigma_\Gamma(L))\xrightarrow{\pi_{\textrm{PZ}_n}}\textrm{PZ}_{n-1}(\Sigma_\Gamma(L))\rightarrow1.$ In particular, we observe that the kernel $K$ of $\iota_{\textrm{PZ}_n}$ is non-trivial. This corrects Theorem 2.14 in [12](<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2006.07106" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2006.07106">arXiv:2006.07106</a>). Moreover, we use the presentation of the pure orbifold mapping class group $\textrm{PMap}^{\textrm{id},orb}_n(\Sigma_\Gamma(L))$ from [8] to determine $K$. Comparing these orbifold mapping class groups with the orbifold braid groups, reveals a surprising behavior: in contrast to the classical case, the orbifold braid group is a proper quotient of the orbifold mapping class group. This yields a presentation of the pure orbifold braid group which allows us to read off the kernel $K$.

On Positive Braids, Monodromy Groups and Framings

Abstract:We associate to every positive braid a braid monodromy group, generalizing the geometric monodromy group of an isolated plane curve singularity. If the closure of the braid is a knot, we identify the corresponding group with a framed mapping class group. In particular, this gives a well defined knot invariant. As an application, we obtain that the geometric monodromy group of an irreducible singularity is determined by the genus and the Arf invariant of the associated knot.

Abstract:Abstract Let $$g_t$$ g t be a loop in the space of monic complex polynomials in one variable of fixed degree n . If the roots of $$g_t$$ g t are distinct for all t , they form a braid $$B_1$$ B 1 on n strands. Likewise, if the critical points of $$g_t$$ g t are distinct for all t , they form a braid $$B_2$$ B 2 on $$n-1$$ n - 1 strands. In this paper we study the relationship between $$B_1$$ B 1 and $$B_2$$ B 2 . Composing the polynomials $$g_t$$ g t with the argument map defines a pseudo-fibration map on the complement of the closure of $$B_1$$ B 1 in $${\mathbb {C}}\times S^1$$ C × S 1 , whose critical points lie on $$B_2$$ B 2 . We prove that for $$B_1$$ B 1 a T-homogeneous braid and $$B_2$$ B 2 the trivial braid this map can be taken to be a fibration map. In the case of homogeneous braids we present a visualization of this fact. Our work implies that for every pair of links $$L_1$$ L 1 and $$L_2$$ L 2 there is a mixed polynomial $$f:{\mathbb {C}}^2\rightarrow {\mathbb {C}}$$ f : C 2 → C in complex variables u , v and the complex conjugate $$\overline{v}$$ v ̄ such that both f and the derivative $$f_u$$ f u have a weakly isolated singularity at the origin with $$L_1$$ L 1 as the link of the singularity of f and $$L_2$$ L 2 as a sublink of the link of the singularity of $$f_u$$ f u .

Abstract:By introducing a modified diagonal matrix h, the properties of Markov moves are examined for the non-standard representations of the braid group associated with the fundamental representations of A(n), B(n), C(n) and D(n). It is shown that link polynomials can be constructed from those braid group representations. The skein relations of link polynomials are obtained explicitly.

Abstract:Let $d \geq 2$ and $n\geq 3$ be two natural numbers. Given any sequence $\kappa=(k_1,\dots,k_n) \in \mathbb{Z}^n$ such that $\gcd(k_1,\dots,k_n,d)=1$, we consider the family of Riemann surfaces obtained from the plane curves defined by $y^d=\prod_{i=1}^n(x-b_i)^{k_i}$, where $\{b_1,\dots,b_n\}$ are $n$ distinct points in $\mathbb{C}$. The monodromy of the cohomology of the fibers of this family provides us with a representation of the pure braid group $\mathrm{PB}_n$ into some symplectic group. By restricting to a specific subspace in the cohomology of the fibers, we obtain a representation $\rho_d$ of $\mathrm{PB}_n$ into a linear algebraic group defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. In a sense, $\rho_d$ is primitive with respect to the parameters $d$ and $\kappa$. The first main result of this paper is a criterion for the Zariski closure of the image of $\rho_d$ to be maximal, and the second main result is a criterion for the image to be an arithmetic lattice in the target group. The latter generalizes previous results of Venkataramana and gives an answer to a question by McMullen.

Abstract:Genevois recently classified which graph braid groups on $\ge 3$ strands are word hyperbolic. In the $3$-strand case, he asked whether all such word hyperbolic groups are actually free; this reduced to checking two infinite classes of graphs: sun and pulsar graphs. We prove that $3$-strand braid groups of sun graphs are free. On the other hand, it was known to experts that $3$-strand braid groups of most pulsar graphs contain surface subgroups. We provide a simple proof of this and prove an additional structure theorem for these groups.

Abstract:We classify homomorphisms from the braid group on $n$ strands to the pure mapping class group of a nonoriantable surface of genus $g$. For $n\ge 14$ and $g\le 2\lfloor{n/2}\rfloor+1$ every such homomorphism is either cyclic, or it maps standard generators of the braid group to either distinct Dehn twists, or distinct crosscap transpositions, possibly multiplied by the same element of the centralizer of the image.

Abstract:We show that the group cohomology of the diffeomorphisms of the disk with $n$ punctures has the cohomology of the braid group of $n$ strands as the summand. As an application of this method, we also prove that there is no cohomological obstruction to lifting the "standard" embedding $\mathrm{Br}_{2g+2}\hookrightarrow \mathrm{Mod}_{g,2}$ to a group homomorphism between diffeomorphism groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a Gröbner-Shirshov basis of the braid group $B_{n+1}$ in Adyan-Thurston generators. We also deal with the braid group of type $\bf{B}_{n}$. As results, we obtain a new algorithm for getting the Adyan-Thurston normal form, and a new proof that the braid semigroup $B^+_{n+1}$ is the subsemigroup in $B_{n+1}$.

Abstract:We give a complete classification of homomorphisms from the braid group on $n$ strands to the braid group on $2n$ strands when $n$ is at least 5. We also classify endomorphisms of the braid group on 4 strands, as well as homomorphisms from the commutator subgroup of the braid group on $n$ strands to the braid group on $2n-5$ strands. Our classifications suggest a recursive classification of homomorphisms between any braid groups. We also give a simple, geometric proof of a theorem of Lin that highly constrains the holomorphic maps that may exist between spaces of monic, square-free polynomials of two given degrees.

Abstract:For a punctured surface $S$, we characterize the representations of its fundamental group into $\mathrm{PSL}_2 (\mathbb{C})$ that arise as the monodromy of a meromorphic projective structure on $S$ with poles of order at most two and no apparent singularities. This proves the analogue of a theorem of Gallo-Kapovich-Marden concerning $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^1$-structures on closed surfaces, and settles a long-standing question about characterizing monodromy groups for the Schwarzian equation on punctured spheres. The proof involves a geometric interpretation of the Fock-Goncharov coordinates of the moduli space of framed $\mathrm{PSL}_2 (\mathbb{C})$-representations, following ideas of Thurston and some recent results of Allegretti-Bridgeland.

A Note on Pure Braids and Link Concordance

Abstract:The knot concordance group can be contextualized as organizing problems about 3- and 4-dimensional spaces and the relationships between them. Every 3-manifold is surgery on some link, not necessarily a knot, and thus it is natural to ask about such a group for links. In 1988, Le Dimet constructed the string link concordance groups and in 1998, Habegger and Lin precisely characterized these groups as quotients of the link concordance sets using a group action. Notably, the knot concordance group is abelian while, for each $n$, the string link concordance group on $n$ strands is non-abelian as it contains the pure braid group on $n$ strands as a subgroup. In this work, we prove that even the quotient of each string link concordance group by its pure braid subgroup is non-abelian.

Abstract:Given a representation $\varphi \colon B_n \to G_n$ of the braid group $B_n$, $n \geq 2$ into a group $G_n$, we are considering the problem of whether it is possible to extend this representation to a representation $\Phi \colon SM_n \to A_n$, where $SM_n$ is the singular braid monoid and $A_n$ is an associative algebra, in which the group of units contains $G_n$. We also investigate the possibility of extending the representation $\Phi \colon SM_n \to A_n$ to a representation $\widetilde{\Phi} \colon SB_n \to A_n$ of the singular braid group $SB_n$. On the other hand, given two linear representations $\varphi_1, \varphi_2 \colon H \to GL_m(\Bbbk)$ of a group $H$ into a general linear group over a field $\Bbbk$, we define the defect of one of these representations with respect to the other. Furthermore, we construct a linear representation of $SB_n$ which is an extension of the Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representation (LKBR) and compute the defect of this extension with respect to the exterior product of two extensions of the Burau representation. Finally, we discuss how to derive an invariant of classical links from the Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representation.
