Abstract:• A general FEM for nonlinear heat conduction with temperature-dependent properties and boundary conditions is developed. • The internal nonlinearity of FEM induced by derivatives of temperature-dependent terms is revealed in general FEM. • The induced nonlinearity terminates the equivalence of Galerkin residual and variational analyses. • The general FEM is adopted as local refinement of governing equation in pursuit for efficiency. In simulation of heat conduction with temperature-independent physical properties and boundary conditions (BCs), Galerkin residual analysis and variational analysis yield equivalent finite element method (FEM), the conventional FEM. However, if the properties and BCs are temperature-dependent, it is discovered that their derivatives further induce nonlinearity of FEM which consequently generates divergence between the two analyses. A general FEM, extension of variational analysis, is derived as general form of conventional FEM modeling nonlinear heat conduction. Numerical examples demonstrate that the general FEM produces results with considerably higher accuracy and stability and also possesses higher performances on conforming with both two analyses. Since general FEM degenerates to conventional FEM if derivatives are of small-amplitude or zero and its direct implementation to the entire domain is costive, general FEM is alternatively utilized as local refinement of governing equation only to points with significant derivatives. The strategy of local refinement is optimized to enhance efficiency.

Abstract:We analyze the local accuracy of the virtual element method. More precisely, we prove an error bound similar to the one holding for the finite element method, namely, that the local error in a interior subdomain is bounded by a term behaving like the best approximation allowed by the local smoothness of the solution in a larger interior subdomain plus the global error measured in a negative norm.

Abstract:We consider a general linear parabolic problem with extended time boundary conditions (including initial value problems and periodic ones), and approximate it by the implicit Euler scheme in time and the Gradient Discretisation method in space; the latter is in fact a class of methods that includes conforming and nonconforming finite elements, discontinuous Galerkin methods and several others. The main result is an error estimate which holds without supplementary regularity hypothesis on the solution. This result states that the approximation error has the same order as the sum of the interpolation error and the conformity error. The proof of this result relies on an inf-sup inequality in Hilbert spaces which can be used both in the continuous and the discrete frameworks. The error estimate result is illustrated by numerical examples with low regularity of the solution.

Abstract:In this paper we show how to find the exact error (not just an estimate of the error) of a conforming mixed approximation by using the functional type a posteriori error estimates in the spirit of Repin. The error is measured in a mixed norm which takes into account both the primal and dual variables. We derive this result for elliptic partial differential equations of a certain class. We first derive a special version of our main result by using a simplified reaction-diffusion problem to demonstrate the strong connection to the classical functional a posteriori error estimates of Repin. After this we derive the main result in an abstract setting. Our main result states that in order to obtain the exact global error value of a conforming mixed approximation one only needs the problem data and the mixed approximation of the exact solution. There is no need for calculating any auxiliary data. The calculation of the exact error consists of simply calculating two (usually integral) quantities where all the quantities are known after the approximate solution has been obtained by any conforming method. We also show some numerical computations to confirm the results.

Abstract:Using the result of the error estimate of the simple extended Newton method established in the present paper for solving abstract inequality systems, we study the error bound property of approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems on Banach spaces with the involved function F being Fréchet differentiable and its derivative F^' satisfying the center-Lipschitz condition (not necessarily the Lipschitz condition) around a point x 0 . Under some mild conditions, we establish results on the existence of the solutions, and the error bound properties for approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems. Applications of these results to finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities on Banach spaces are presented and the error bound properties of approximate solutions of finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities are also established. Our results extend the corresponding results in [ 3 , 18 , 19 ].

Abstract:An a posteriori error estimator is obtained for a nonconforming finite element approximationof a linear elliptic problem, which is derived from a corresponding unboundeddomain problem by applying a nonlocal approximate artificial boundary condition. Ourmethod can be easily extended to obtain a class of a posteriori error estimators for variousconforming and nonconforming finite element approximations of problems with differentartificial boundary conditions. The reliability and efficiency of our a posteriori error estimatorare rigorously proved and are verified by numerical examples.
Robust and Local Optimal A Priori Error Estimates for Interface Problems with Low Regularity: Mixed Finite Element Approximations

Abstract:For elliptic interface problems in two- and three-dimensions with a possible very low regularity, this paper establishes a priori error estimates for the Raviart-Thomas and Brezzi-Douglas-Marini mixed finite element approximations. These estimates are robust with respect to the diffusion coefficient and optimal with respect to the local regularity of the solution. Several versions of the robust best approximations of the flux and the potential approximations are obtained. These robust and local optimal a priori estimates provide guidance for constructing robust a posteriori error estimates and adaptive methods for the mixed approximations.

Abstract:We estimate best-approximation errors using vector-valued finite elements for fields with low regularity in the scale of fractional-order Sobolev spaces. By assuming additionally that the target field has a curl or divergence property, we establish upper bounds on these errors that can be localized to the mesh cells. These bounds are derived using the quasi-interpolation errors with or without boundary prescription derived in [A. Ern and J.-L. Guermond, ESAIM Math. Model. Numer. Anal., 51 (2017), pp.~1367--1385]. By using the face-to-cell lifting operators analyzed in [A. Ern and J.-L. Guermond, Found. Comput. Math., (2021)], and exploiting the additional assumption made on the curl or the divergence of the target field, a localized upper bound on the quasi-interpolation error is derived. As an illustration, we show how to apply these results to the error analysis of the curl-curl problem associated with Maxwell's equations.

Asymptotic expansions for approximate solutions of boundary integral equations

Abstract:This paper uses the Modified Projection Method to examine the errors in solving the boundary integral equation from Laplace equation. The analysis uses weighted norms, and parallel algorithms help solve the independent linear systems. By applying the method developed by Kulkarni, the study shows how the approximate solution behaves in polygonal domains. It also explores computational techniques using the double layer potential kernel to solve Laplace equation in these domains. The iterated Galerkin method provides an approximation of order 2r+2 in smooth domains. However, the corners in polygonal domains cause singularities that reduce the accuracy. Adjusting the mesh near these corners can almost restore accuracy when the error is measured using the uniform norm. This paper builds on the work of Rude et al. By using modified operator suggested by Kulkarni, superconvergence in iterated solutions is observed. This leads to an asymptotic error expansion, with the leading term being $O(h^4)$ and the remaining error term $O(h^6)$, resulting in a method with similar accuracy.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to a new error analysis of nonconforming finite element methods. Compared with the classic error analysis in literature, only weak continuity, the F-E-M-Test for nonconforming finite element spaces, and basic H m regularity for exact solutions of 2m-th order elliptic problems under consideration are assumed. The analysis is motivated by ideas from a posteriori error estimates and projection average operators. One main ingredient is a novel decomposition for some key average terms on (n − 1)-dimensional faces by introducing a piecewise constant projection, which defines the generalization to more general nonconforming finite elements of the results in literature. The analysis and results herein are conjectured to apply for all nonconforming finite elements in literature.
Towards finite element exterior calculus on manifolds: commuting projections, geometric variational crimes, and approximation errors

Abstract:We survey recent contributions to finite element exterior calculus on manifolds and surfaces within a comprehensive formalism for the error analysis of vector-valued partial differential equations on manifolds. Our primary focus is on uniformly bounded commuting projections on manifolds: these projections map from Sobolev de Rham complexes onto finite element de Rham complexes, commute with the differential operators, and satisfy uniform bounds in Lebesgue norms. They enable the Galerkin theory of Hilbert complexes for a large range of intrinsic finite element methods on manifolds. However, these intrinsic finite element methods are generally not computable and thus primarily of theoretical interest. This leads to our second point: estimating the geometric variational crime incurred by transitioning to computable approximate problems. Lastly, our third point addresses how to estimate the approximation error of the intrinsic finite element method in terms of the mesh size. If the solution is not continuous, then such an estimate is achieved via modified Clément or Scott-Zhang interpolants that facilitate a broken Bramble--Hilbert lemma.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the error estimations for the div least-squares finite element method on elliptic problems. Compared with the previous work, we present a complete error analysis, which improves the current \emph{state-of-the-art} results. The error estimations for both the scalar and the flux variables are established by dual arguments, and in most cases, only an $H^{1+\varepsilon}$ regularity is used. Numerical experiments strongly confirm our analysis.

Abstract:In this paper,we extend the work of Brenner and Sung[Math.Comp.59,321-338(1992)]and present a regularity estimate for the elastic equations in concave domains.Based on the regularity estimate we prove that the constants in the error estimates of the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element approximations for the elastic equations/eigen-value problem are independent of Lamé constant,which means the nonconforming Crouzeix-Raviart element approximations are locking-free.We also establish two kinds of two-grid discretization schemes for the elastic eigenvalue problem,and analyze that when the mesh sizes of coarse grid and fine grid satisfy some relationship,the resulting solutions can achieve the optimal accuracy.Numerical examples are provided to show the efficiency of two-grid schemes for the elastic eigenvalue problem.

Abstract:The author analyzes a finite element method for the integration of initial value problems in ordinary differential equations. General and contractive problems are treated, and quasi-optimal a priori and a posteriori error bounds obtained in each case. In particular, good results are obtained for a class of stiff dissipative problems. These results are used to construct a rigorous and robust theory of global error control. The author also derives an asymptotic error estimate that is used in a discussion of the behavior of the error. In conclusion, the properties of the error control are exhibited in a series of numerical experiments.

Abstract:The approximation properties of shifted fundamental solutions are stated for a general class of second order linear elliptic differential operators. Motivated by the method of the fundamental solutions, the singularities of the fundamental solutions are located in the vicinity of a fixed surface, which is the boundary of a 3-dimensional Lipschitz domain. The approximation is estimated first in Ck -norm. The corresponding convergence rate is determined depending on the density of the singularities. This delivers a solid theoretical basis for the method of fundamental solutions. The results are extended to exterior domains and as a new application, the numerical solution of Dirichlet-to-Neumann problems are constructed and analyzed on unbounded domains. The efficiency of this new method is demonstrated in series of numerical experiments.

Abstract:In this paper we present error estimates for the finite element approximation of linear elastic equations in an unbounded domain. The finite element approximation is formulated on a bounded computational domain using a nonlocal approximate artificial boundary condition or a local one. In fact there are a family of nonlocal approximate boundary conditions with increasing accuracy (and computational cost) and a family of local ones for a given artificial boundary. Our error estimates show how the errors of the finite element approximations depend on the mesh size, the terms used in the approximate artificial boundary condition, and the location of the artificial boundary. A numerical example for Navier equations outside a circle in the plane is presented. Numerical results demonstrate the performance of our error estimates.

Abstract:The paper is to introduce a new systematic method that can produce lower bounds for eigenvalues. The main idea is to use nonconforming finite element methods. The conclusion is that if local approximation properties of nonconforming finite element spaces are better than total errors (sums of global approximation errors and consistency errors) of nonconforming finite element methods, corresponding methods will produce lower bounds for eigenvalues. More precisely, under three conditions on continuity and approximation properties of nonconforming finite element spaces we analyze abstract error estimates of approximate eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Subsequently, we propose one more condition and prove that it is sufficient to guarantee nonconforming finite element methods to produce lower bounds for eigenvalues of symmetric elliptic operators. We show that this condition hold for most low-order nonconforming finite elements in literature. In addition, this condition provides a guidance to modify known nonconforming elements in literature and to propose new nonconforming elements. In fact, we enrich locally the Crouzeix-Raviart element such that the new element satisfies the condition; we also propose a new nonconforming element for second order elliptic operators and prove that it will yield lower bounds for eigenvalues. Finally, we prove the saturation condition for most nonconforming elements.

Abstract:We consider a finite volume scheme with two-point flux approximation (TPFA) to approximate a Laplace problem when the solution exhibits no more regularity than belonging to H 0 1 ( Ω ) H^1_0(\Omega ) . We define an error between the approximate solution and the exact one, involving their difference and the difference of normal gradients to the faces of the mesh. We prove that this error behaves as the sum of an interpolation error and a conformity error. As a consequence, some error bounds, depending on the regularity of the continuous solution, can be obtained for both the approximate solution and an approximate gradient post-processed from this approximate solution. A numerical example illustrates the error estimate in the context of a solution with minimal regularity. This result is extended to evolution problems discretized via the implicit Euler scheme in an appendix.
