We show that the spatial integral of the solution from −R to R converges in total variance distance to a standard normal distribution as R tends to infinity, after renormalization. We also show a functional version of this central limit theorem.

Abstract:This paper investigates the convergence of density approximations for stochastic heat equation in both uniform convergence topology and total variation distance. The convergence order of the densities in uniform convergence topology is shown to be exactly $1/2$ in the nonlinear case and nearly $1$ in the linear case. This result implies that the distributions of the approximations always converge to the distribution of the origin equation in total variation distance. As far as we know, this is the first result on the convergence of density approximations to the stochastic partial differential equation.

Abstract:In this paper, relations between the asymptotic behavior for a stochastic wave equation and a heat equation are considered. By introducing almost surely D–α-contracting property for random dynamical systems, we obtain a global random attractor of the stochastic wave equation νuttν+utν−Δuν+f(uν)=νW˙ endowed with Dirichlet boundary condition for any 0<ν⩽1. The upper semicontinuity of this global random attractor and the global attractor of the heat equation zt−Δz+f(z)=0 with Dirichlet boundary condition as ν goes to zero is investigated. Furthermore we show the stationary solutions of the stochastic wave equation converge in probability to some stationary solution of the heat equation.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">In this article, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the solution to a one-dimensional stochastic heat equation with random nonlinear term generated by a stationary, ergodic random field. We extend the well-known central limit theorem for finite-dimensional diffusions in random environment to this infinite-dimensional setting. Due to our result, a central limit theorem in <span class="a-plus-plus inline-equation id-i-eq1"> <span class="a-plus-plus equation-source format-t-e-x">$L^1$</span> </span> sense with respect to the randomness of the environment holds under a diffusive time scaling. The limit distribution is a centered Gaussian law whose covariance operator is explicitly described. The distribution concentrates only on the space of constant functions.</p>

Rearranged Stochastic Heat Equation: Ergodicity and Related Gradient Descent on ${\mathcal P}({\mathbb R})$

Abstract:This article provides a case study for a recently introduced diffusion in the space of probability measures over the reals, namely rearranged stochastic heat, which solves a stochastic partial differential equation valued in the set of symmetrised quantile functions over the unit circle. This contribution studies probability measure-valued flows perturbed by this noise with a special focus on gradient flows. This is done by introducing a drift to the rearranged stochastic heat equation by means of a vector field from the set of random variables over the unit circle into itself. When the flow is a gradient flow, the vector field may coincide with the Wasserstein derivative of a mean-field potential function. The resulting equation reads as a sort of McKean-Vlasov stochastic differential equation with an infinite dimensional common noise. This article provides conditions on the drift under which solutions exist uniquely for any time horizon and converge exponentially fast towards a unique equilibrium. When the drift derives from a potential, some metastability properties are obtained as the intensity of the noise is tuned to zero: it is shown that under a particular scaling regime, the gradient descent lingers near local minimizers for expected times of the same order as in the finite dimensional setting.

A large deviation principle for the multispecies stirring process

Abstract:In this paper we consider the multispecies stirring process on the discrete torus. We prove a large deviation principle for the trajectory of the vector of densities of the different species. The technique of proof consists in extending the method of the foundational paper [1] based on the superexponential estimate to the multispecies setting. This requires a careful choice of the corresponding weakly asymmetric dynamics, which is parametrized by fields depending on the various species. We also prove the hydrodynamic limit of this weakly asymmetric dynamics, which is similar to but different from the ABC model in [2]. Using the appropriate asymmetric dynamics, we also obtain that the mobility matrix relating the drift currents to the fields coincides with the covariance matrix of the reversible multinomial distribution, which then further leads to the Einstein relation

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a central limit theorem and establish a moderate deviation principle for 2D stochastic hydrodynamical type systems with multiplicative noise in unbounded domains, which covers 2D Navier-Stokes equations, 2D MHD models and the 2D magnetic B?enard problem and also shell models of turbulence. The weak convergence method plays an important role in obtaining the moderate deviation principle.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the well-posedness of stochastic heat equations on moving domains, which amounts to a study of infinite dimensional interacting systems. The main difficulty is to deal with the problems caused by the time-varying state spaces and the interaction of the particle systems. The interaction still occurs even in the case of additive noise. This is in contrast to stochastic heat equations in a fixed domain.
Exponential ergodicity of stochastic heat equations with Hölder coefficients

Abstract:We investigate the stochastic heat equation driven by space-time white noise defined on an abstract Hilbert space, assuming that the drift and diffusion coefficients are both merely Hölder continuous. Random field SPDEs are covered as special examples. We give the first proof that there exists a unique in law mild solution when the diffusion coefficient is $\beta$ - Hölder continuous for $\beta>\frac{3}{4}$ and uniformly non-degenerate, and that the drift is locally Hölder continuous. Meanwhile, assuming the existence of a suitable Lyapunov function for the SPDE, we prove that the solution converges exponentially fast to the unique invariant measure with respect to a typical Wasserstein distance. Our technique generalizes when the SPDE has a Burgers type non-linearity $(-A)^{\vartheta}F(X_t)$ for any $\vartheta\in(0,1)$, where $F$ is $\vartheta+\epsilon$- Hölder continuous and has linear growth. For $\vartheta\in(\frac{1}{2},1)$ this result is new even in the case of additive noise.

Abstract:Let $\{u(t,x)\}_{t>0,x\in{{\mathbb R}^{d}}}$ denote the solution to the linear (fractional) stochastic heat equation. We establish rates of convergence with respect to the uniform distance between the density of spatial averages of solution and the density of the standard normal distribution in some different scenarios. We first consider the case that $u_0\equiv1$, and the stochastic fractional heat equation is driven by a space-time white noise. When $\alpha=2$ (parabolic Anderson model, PAM for short) and the stochastic heat equation is driven by colored noise in space, we present the rates of convergence respectively in the case that $u_0\equiv1$, $d\geq1$ and $u_0=\delta_0$, $d=1$ under an additional condition $\hat f(\mathbb{R}^d)<\infty$. Our results are obtained by using a combination of the Malliavin calculus and Stein's method for normal approximations.

Abstract:We consider a $d$-dimensional branching particle system in a random environment. Suppose that the initial measures converge weakly to a measure with bounded density. Under the Mytnik-Sturm branching mechanism, we prove that the corresponding empirical measure $X_t^n$ converges weakly in the Skorohod space $D([0,T];M_F(\mathbb{R}^d))$ and the limit has a density $u_t(x)$, where $M_F(\mathbb{R}^d)$ is the space of finite measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$. We also derive a stochastic partial differential equation $u_t(x)$ satisfies. By using the techniques of Malliavin calculus, we prove that $u_t(x)$ is jointly Hölder continuous in time with exponent $\frac{1}{2}-\epsilon$ and in space with exponent $1-\epsilon$ for any $\epsilon>0$.

Abstract:Consider the $[0,1]$-valued continuous random field solution $(u_t(x))_{t\geq 0, x\in \mathbb R}$ to the one-dimensional stochastic heat equation \[ \partial_t u_t = \frac{1}{2}\Delta u_t + b(u_t) + \sqrt{u_t(1-u_t)} \dot W, \] where $b(1)\leq 0\leq b(0)$ and $\dot W$ is space-time white noise. In this paper, we establish the weak existence and uniqueness of the above equation for a class of drifts $b(u)$ that may be irregular at the points where the noise coefficient is non-Lipschitz and degenerate, specifically at $u=0$ or $u=1$. This class of drifts includes non-Lipschitz drifts like $b(u) = u^q(1-u)$ for every $q\in (0,1)$, and some discontinuous drifts like $b(u) = \mathbf 1_{(0,1]}(u)-u$. This demonstrates a regularization effect of the multiplicative space-time white noise without the standard assumption that the noise coefficient is Lipschitz and non-degenerate. The method we apply is a further development of a moment duality technique that uses branching-coalescing Brownian motions as the dual particle system. To handle an irregular drift in the above equation, particles in the dual system are allowed to have a number of offspring with infinite expectation, and even an infinite number of offspring with positive probability. We show that, even though the branching mechanism with an infinite number of offspring causes explosions in finite time, immediately after each explosion, the total population comes down from infinity due to the coalescing mechanism. Our results on this dual particle system are of independent interest.

Numerical approximation of the stochastic heat equation with a distributional reaction term

Abstract:We study the numerical approximation of the stochastic heat equation with a distributional reaction term. Under a condition on the Besov regularity of the reaction term, it was proven recently that a strong solution exists and is unique in the pathwise sense, in a class of Hölder continuous processes. For a suitable choice of sequence $(b^k)_{k\in \mathbb{N}}$ approximating $b$, we prove that the error between the solution $u$ of the SPDE with reaction term $b$ and its tamed Euler finite-difference scheme with mollified drift $b^k$, converges to $0$ in $L^m(\Omega)$ with a rate that depends on the Besov regularity of $b$. In particular, one can consider two interesting cases: first, even when $b$ is only a (finite) measure, a rate of convergence is obtained. On the other hand, when $b$ is a bounded measurable function, the (almost) optimal rate of convergence $(\frac{1}{2}-\varepsilon)$-in space and $(\frac{1}{4}-\varepsilon)$-in time is achieved. Stochastic sewing techniques are used in the proofs, in particular to deduce new regularising properties of the discrete Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.

A complete convergence theorem for the q-voter model and other voter model perturbations in two dimensions

Abstract:The q-voter model is a spin-flip system in which the rate of flipping to type i is given by the qth power of the proportion of nearest neighbours in type i for $i=0,1$. If $q=1$ it reduces to the classical voter model. We show that in the critical 2-dimensional case, for $q<1$ and close enough to 1,for any initial state as $t\to\infty$, the system converges weakly to a mixture of all 0's and all 1's, and a unique invariant law which contains infinitely many sites of both types. This follows as a special case of a general theorem which proves a similar "complete convergence theorem" for cancellative, monotone, finite range voter model perturbations on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ providing a certain parameter, $\Theta_3$, is strictly positive. Similar results follow for the affine and geometric voter models and Lotka-Volterra models, all for parameter values close to the giving the voter model. This kind of asymptotic behavior is quite different from that of the 2-dimensional voter model itself, which undergoes clustering, and converges to a mixture of all 0's and all 1's. The above parameter $\Theta_3$ has an explicit expression in terms of asymptotic coalescing probabilities of 2-dimensional random walk, and we give a rather simple sufficient condition for it to be strictly positive. An important step in the proof is to establish weak convergence of the rescaled spin-flip systems to super-Brownian motion with drift $\Theta_3$. In fact, a convergence result is proved under weaker hypotheses which includes all known such results for 2-dimensional voter model perturbations and a number of new ones, including a rescaled limit theorem for the q-voter model where $q\uparrow $1 with the rescaling.

Probabilistic limit behaviors of numerical discretizations for time-homogeneous Markov processes

Abstract:In order to give quantitative estimates for approximating the ergodic limit, we investigate probabilistic limit behaviors of time-averaging estimators of numerical discretizations for a class of time-homogeneous Markov processes, by studying the corresponding strong law of large numbers and the central limit theorem. Verifiable general sufficient conditions are proposed to ensure these limit behaviors, which are related to the properties of strong mixing and strong convergence for numerical discretizations of Markov processes. Our results hold for test functionals with lower regularity compared with existing results, and the analysis does not require the existence of the Poisson equation associated with the underlying Markov process. Notably, our results are applicable to numerical discretizations for a large class of stochastic systems, including stochastic ordinary differential equations, infinite dimensional stochastic evolution equations, and stochastic functional differential equations.

Abstract:Given a transition matrix $P$ indexed by a finite set $V$ of vertices, the voter model is a discrete-time Markov chain in $\{0,1\}^V$ where at each time-step a randomly chosen vertex $x$ imitates the opinion of vertex $y$ with probability $P(x,y)$. The noisy voter model is a variation of the voter model in which vertices may change their opinions by the action of an external noise. The strength of this noise is measured by an extra parameter $p \in [0,1]$. In this work we analyse the density process, defined as the stationary mass of vertices with opinion 1, i.e. $S_t = \sum_{x\in V} \pi(x)\xi_t(x)$, where $\pi$ is the stationary distribution of $P$, and $\xi_t(x)$ is the opinion of vertex $x$ at time $t$. We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of $S_t$ when $t$ tends to infinity for different values of the noise parameter $p$. In particular, by allowing $P$ and $p$ to be functions of the size $|V|$, we show that, under appropriate conditions and small enough $p$ a normalised version of $S_t$ converges to a Gaussian random variable, while for large enough $p$, $S_t$ converges to a Bernoulli random variable. We provide further analysis of the noisy voter model on a variety of specific graphs including the complete graph, cycle, torus and hypercube, where we identify the critical rate $p$ (depending on the size $|V|$) that separates these two asymptotic behaviours.

Stochastic Navier-Stokes equations for turbulent flows in critical spaces

Abstract:In this paper we study the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations on the $d$-dimensional torus with transport noise, which arise in the study of turbulent flows. Under very weak smoothness assumptions on the data we prove local well-posedness in the critical case $\mathbb{B}^{d/q-1}_{q,p}$ for $q\in [2,2d)$ and $p$ large enough. Moreover, we obtain new regularization results for solutions, and new blow-up criteria which can be seen as a stochastic version of the Serrin blow-up criteria. The latter is used to prove global well-posedness with high probability for small initial data in critical spaces in any dimensions $d\geq 2$. Moreover, for $d=2$, we obtain new global well-posedness results and regularization phenomena which unify and extend several earlier results.

Abstract:We prove anomalous-diffusion scaling for a one-dimensional stochastic kinetic dynamics, in which the stochastic drift is driven by an exogenous Bessel noise, and also includes endogenous volatility which is permitted to have arbitrary dependence with the exogenous noise. We identify the superdiffusive scaling exponent for the model, and prove a weak convergence result on the corresponding scale. We show how our result extends to admit, as exogenous noise processes, not only Bessel processes but more general processes satisfying certain asymptotic conditions.

Abstract:We study the time-dependent spatial averages of a critical stochastic partial differential equation, namely the stochastic heat equation in dimension $d\geq 3$ with noise white in time and colored in space with covariance kernel $\|\cdot\|^{-2}$. The solution to this SPDE is a singular measure and was constructed by Mueller and Tribe in [MT04]. We show that the time-dependent spatial averages of this SPDE over a ball of radius $R$ at time $t$ have different limits under different space-time scales. In particular, when $t\ll R^2$, the central limit theorem holds; when $t=R^2$, the spatial average is a non-Gaussian random variable; when $t\gg R^2$, the spatial average becomes extinct.

Abstract:We study the density fluctuations at equilibrium of the multi-species stirring process, a natural multi-type generalization of the symmetric (partial) exclusion process. In the diffusive scaling limit, the resulting process is a system of infinite-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes that are coupled in the noise terms. This shows that at the level of equilibrium fluctuations the species start to interact, even though at the level of the hydrodynamic limit each species diffuses separately. We consider also a generalization to a multi-species stirring process with a linear reaction term arising from species mutation. The general techniques used in the proof are based on the Dynkin martingale approach, combined with duality for the computation of the covariances.
