Abstract:Consider branching Brownian motion in which we begin with one particle at the origin, particles independently move according to Brownian motion, and particles split into two at rate one. It is well-known that the right-most particle at time $t$ will be near $\sqrt{2} t$. Roberts considered the so-called consistent maximal displacement and showed that with high probability, there will be a particle at time $t$ whose ancestors stayed within a distance $ct^{1/3}$ of the curve $s \mapsto \sqrt{2} s$ for all $s \in [0, t]$, where $c = (3 \pi^2)^{1/3}/\sqrt{2}$. We consider the question of how close the trajectory of a particle can stay to the curve $s \mapsto (\sqrt{2} + \varepsilon) s$ for all $s \in [0, t]$, where $\varepsilon> 0$ is small. We find that there is a phase transition, with the behavior changing when $t$ is of the order $\varepsilon^{-3/2}$. This result allows us to determine, for branching Brownian motion in which particles have a drift to the left of $\sqrt{2} + \varepsilon$ and are killed at the origin, the position at which a particle needs to begin at time zero for there to be a high probability that the process avoids extinction until time $t$.

Abstract:We consider fluctuations and moderate deviations of the empirical fields for a catalytic Fleming–Viot branching system in nonequilibrium. We proved that for some independent initial distribution, the fluctuation process of the empirical fields is governed by an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process whose drift term is a linear operator associated with a catalyst. Furthermore, we establish the large deviation principle corresponding to the fluctuation. We develop a technique to estimate the exponential moments for the Sobolev norms of the empirical fluctuation fields via the spectrum of the Laplace operator and the exponential inequality of martingales. The estimates of the exponential moments play a crucial role in this paper.

A new look to branching Brownian motion from a particle based reaction diffusion dynamics point of view

Abstract:Aim of this note is to analyse branching Brownian motion within the class of models introduced in the recent paper [4] and called chemical diffusion master equations. These models provide a description for the probabilistic evolution of chemical reaction kinetics associated with spatial diffusion of individual particles. We derive an infinite system of Fokker-Planck equations that rules the probabilistic evolution of the single particles generated by the branching mechanism and analyse its properties using Malliavin Calculus techniques, following the ideas proposed in [13]. Another key ingredient of our approach is the McKean representation for the solution of the Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piskunov equation and a stochastic counterpart of that equation. We also derive the reaction-diffusion partial differential equation solved by the average concentration field of the branching Brownian system of particles.

Abstract:The Brownian gyrator (BG) is often called a minimal model of a nano-engine performing a rotational motion, judging solely upon the fact that in non-equilibrium conditions its torque, specific angular momentum and specific angular velocity have non-zero mean values. {\color{red} For a extit{time-discretised} (with time-step ) model we calculate here the previously unknown probability density functions (PDFs) of and . We show that for finite , the PDF of has exponential tails and all moments are therefore well-defined. At the same time, this PDF appears to be effectively broad -- the noise-to-signal ratio is generically bigger than unity meaning that is strongly not self-averaging. Concurrently,} the PDF of exhibits heavy power-law tails and its mean extcolor{red}{ } is the only existing moment. The BG is therefore not an engine in the common sense: it does not exhibit regular rotations on each run and its fluctuations are not only a minor nuisance -- on contrary, their effect is completely destructive for the performance. Our theoretical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations and experimental data. We discuss some plausible improvements of the model which may result in a more systematic rotational motion.

Abstract:We study an interacting system of competing particles on the real line. Two populations of positive and negative particles evolve according to branching Brownian motion. When opposing particles meet, their charges neutralize and the particles annihilate, as in an inert chemical reaction. We show that, with positive probability, the two populations coexist and that, on this event, the interface is asymptotically linear with a random slope. A variety of generalizations and open problems are discussed.

The weak convergence of the processes on the space of Schwarz distributions is established. The limiting process is an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type process solving a Langevin type equation driven by a one-dimensional Brownian motion.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behaviour of the extremal process of a cascading family of branching Brownian motions. This is a particle system on the real line such that each particle has a type in addition to his position. Particles of type $1$ move on the real line according to Brownian motions and branch at rate $1$ into two children of type $1$. Furthermore, at rate $\alpha$, they give birth to children too of type $2$. Particles of type $2$ move according to standard Brownian motion and branch at rate $1$, but cannot give birth to descendants of type $1$. We obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the extremal process of particles of type $2$.

Abstract:We study negative large deviations of the long-time empirical front velocity of the center of mass of the one-sided $N$-BBM ($N$-particle branching Brownian motion) system in one dimension. Employing the macroscopic fluctuation theory, we study the probability that $c$ is smaller than the limiting front velocity $c_0$, predicted by the deterministic theory, or even becomes negative. To this end we determine the optimal path of the system, conditioned on the specified $c$. We show that for $c_0-c\ll c_0$ the properly defined rate function $s(c)$, coincides, up to a non-universal numerical factor, with the universal rate functions for front models belonging to the Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piscounov universality class. For sufficiently large negative values of $c$, $s(c)$ approaches a simple bound, obtained under the assumption that the branching is completely suppressed during the whole time. Remarkably, for all $c\leq c_*$, where $c=c_*<0$ is a critical value that we find numerically, the rate function $s(c)$ is \emph{equal} to the simple bound. At the critical point $c=c_*$ the character of the optimal path changes, and the rate function exhibits a dynamical phase transition of second order.

Abstract:We consider a system of particles performing a one-dimensional dyadic branching Brownian motion with space-dependent branching rate, negative drift $-\mu$ and killed upon reaching $0$. More precisely, the particles branch at rate $r(x)=(1+W(x))/2,$ where $W$ is a compactly supported and non-negative smooth function and the drift $\mu$ is chosen in such a way that the system is critical in some sense. This particle system can be seen as an analytically tractable model for fluctuating fronts, describing the internal mechanisms driving the invasion of a habitat by a cooperating population. Recent studies from Birzu, Hallatschek and Korolev suggest the existence of three classes of fluctuating fronts: pulled, semi pushed and fully pushed fronts. Here, we focus on the fully pushed regime. We establish a Yaglom law for this branching process and prove that the genealogy of the particles converges to a Brownian Coalescent Point Process using a method of moments. In practice, the genealogy of the BBM is seen as a random marked metric measure space and we use spinal decomposition to prove its convergence in the Gromov-weak topology. We also carry the spectral decomposition of a differential operator related to the BBM to determine the invariant measure of the spine as well as its mixing time.

Abstract:We study a $d$-dimensional branching Brownian motion inside subdiffusively expanding balls, where the boundary of the ball is deactivating in the sense that once a particle hits the moving boundary, it is instantly deactivated but is reactivated later if and when its ancestral line becomes fully inside the expanding ball at that later time. That is, at each time, the process consists of the particles of a normal branching Brownian motion whose ancestral lines are fully inside the expanding ball at that time. We obtain a full limit large-deviation result as time tends to infinity on the probability that the mass of the process inside the expanding ball is aytpically small. A phase transition at a critical rate of expansion for the ball is identified, at which the nature of the optimal strategy to realize the large-deviation event changes, and the Lyapunov exponent giving the decay rate of the associated large-deviation probability is continuous. As a corollary, we also obtain a kind of law of large numbers for the mass of the process inside the expanding ball.

Abstract:We study a continuous time Mutually Catalytic Branching model on the $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$. The model describes the behavior of two different populations of particles, performing random walk on the lattice in the presence of branching, that is, each particle dies at a certain rate and is replaced by a random number of offsprings. The branching rate of a particle in one population is proportional to the number of particles of another population at the same site. We study the long time behavior for this model, in particular, coexistence and non-coexistence of two populations in the long run. Finally, we construct a sequence of renormalized processes and use duality techniques to investigate its limiting behavior.

Abstract:The logarithmic correction for the order of the maximum of a two-type reducible branching Brownian motion on the real line exhibits a double jump when the parameters (the ratio of the diffusion coefficients of the two types of particles, and the ratio of the branching rates the two types of particles) cross the boundary of the anomalous spreading region identified by Biggins. In this paper, we further examine this double jump phenomenon by studying a two-type reducible branching Brownian motion on the real line with its parameters depend on the time horizon t. We show that when the parameters approach the boundaries of the anomalous spreading region in an appropriate way, the order of the maximum can interpolate smoothly between different surrounding regimes. We also determine the asymptotic law of the maximum and characterize the extremal process.

Abstract:We consider a model of active Brownian particles with velocity-alignment in two spatial dimensions with passive and active fluctuations. Hereby, active fluctuations refers to purely non-equilibrium stochastic forces correlated with the heading of an individual active particle. In the simplest case studied here, they are assumed as independent stochastic forces parallel (speed noise) and perpendicular (angular noise) to the velocity of the particle. On the other hand, passive fluctuations are defined by a noise vector independent of the direction of motion of a particle, and may account for example for thermal fluctuations. We derive a macroscopic description of the active Brownian particle gas with velocity-alignment interaction. Hereby, we start from the individual based description in terms of stochastic differential equations (Langevin equations) and derive equations of motion for the coarse grained kinetic variables (density, velocity and temperature) via a moment expansion of the corresponding probability density function. We focus here in particular on the different impact of active and passive fluctuations on the onset of collective motion and show how active fluctuations in the active Brownian dynamics can change the phase-transition behaviour of the system. In particular, we show that active angular fluctuation lead to an earlier breakdown of collective motion and to emergence of a new bistable regime in the mean-field case.

Abstract:We consider the classical problem of existence, uniqueness and asymptotics of monotone solutions to the travelling wave equation associated to the parabolic semi-group equation of a super-Brownian motion with a general branching mechanism. Whilst we are strongly guided by the probabilistic reasoning of Kyprianou (2004) for branching Brownian motion, the current paper offers a number of new insights. Our analysis incorporates the role of Seneta-Heyde norming which, in the current setting, draws on classical work of Grey (1974). We give a pathwise explanation of Evans' immortal particle picture (the spine decomposition) which uses the Dynkin-Kuznetsov N-measure as a key ingredient. Moreover, in the spirit of Neveu's stopping lines we make repeated use of Dynkin's exit measures. Additional complications arise from the general nature of the branching mechanism. As a consequence of the analysis we also offer an exact X(log X)^2 moment dichotomy for the almost sure convergence of the so-called derivative martingale at its critical parameter to a non-trivial limit. This differs to the case of branching Brownian motion and branching random walk where a moment `gap' appears in the necessary and sufficient conditions.

Abstract:We consider branching Brownian motion in which initially there is one particle at $x$, particles produce a random number of offspring with mean $m+1$ at the time of branching events, and each particle branches at rate $\beta = 1/2m$. Particles independently move according to Brownian motion with drift $-1$ and are killed at the origin. It is well-known that this process eventually dies out with positive probability. We condition this process to survive for an unusually large time $t$ and study the behavior of the process at small times $s \ll t$ using a spine decomposition. We show, in particular, that the time when a particle gets furthest from the origin is of the order $t^{5/6}$.
