Abstract:In 1991, N. Shalaby conjectured that any additive group $\mathbb{Z}_n$, where $n\equiv1$ or 3 (mod 8) and $n \geq11$, admits a strong Skolem starter and constructed these starters of all admissible orders $11\leq n\leq57$. Shalaby and et al. [O. Ogandzhanyants, M. Kondratieva and N. Shalaby, \emph{Strong Skolem Starters}, J. Combin. Des. {\bf 27} (2018), no. 1, 5--21] was proved if $n=\Pi_{i=1}^{k}p_i^{\alpha_i}$, where $p_i$ is a prime number such that $ord(2)_{p_i}\equiv 2$ (mod 4) and $\alpha_i$ is a non-negative integer, for all $i=1,\ldots,k$, then $\mathbb{Z}_n$ admits a strong Skolem starter. On the other hand, the author [A. Vázquez-Ávila, \emph{A note on strong Skolem starters}, Discrete Math. Accepted] gives different families of strong Skolem starters for $\mathbb{Z}_p$ than Shalaby et al, where $p\equiv3$ (mod 8) is an odd prime. Recently, the author [A. Vázquez-Ávila, \emph{New families of strong Skolem starters}, Submitted] gives different families of strong Skolem starters of $\mathbb{Z}_{p^n}$ than Shalaby et al, where $p\equiv3$ (mod 8) and $n$ is an integer greater than 1. In this paper, we gives some different families of strong Skolem starters of $\mathbb{Z}_{pq}$, where $p,q\equiv3$ (mod 8) are prime numbers such that $p<q$ and $(p-1)\nmid(q-1)$.

Abstract:In 1991, Shalaby conjectured that any Zn , where n≡1 or 3(mod8),n≥11 , admits a strong Skolem starter. In 2018, the authors fully described and explicitly constructed the infinite "cardioidal" family of strong Skolem starters. No other infinite family of these combinatorial designs was known to date. Statements regarding the products of starters, proven in this paper give a new way of generating strong or skew Skolem starters of composite orders. This approach extends our previous result by generating new infinite families of these starters that are not cardioidal.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite additive abelian group of odd order $n$, and let $G^*=G\setminus\{0\}$ be the set of non-zero elements. A starter for $G$ is a set $S=\{\{x_i,y_i\}:i=1,\ldots,\frac{n-1}{2}\}$ such that $\{x_1,\ldots,x_\frac{n-1}{2},y_1,\ldots,y_\frac{n-1}{2}\}=G^*$ and $\{\pm(x_i-y_i):i=1,\ldots,\frac{n-1}{2}\}=G^*$. Moreover, if $\left|\left\{x_i+y_i:i=1,\ldots,\frac{n-1}{2}\right\}\right|=\frac{n-1}{2}$, then $S$ is called a strong starter for $G$. A starter $S$ for $G$ is a $k$ quotient starter if there exists $Q\subseteq G^*$ of cardinality $k$ such that $y_i/x_i\in Q$ or $x_i/y_i\in Q$, for $i=1,\ldots,\frac{n-1}{2}$. In this paper, we give examples of two-quotient strong starters for $\mathbb{F}_q$, where $q=2^kt+1$ is a prime power with $k>1$ a positive integer and $t$ an odd integer greater than 1.

Abstract:Let p be an odd prime. In this paper, analogs of Wilson?s and Wolstenholme?s theorems on the solution sets S+ = {n ? Z* p | n ? a + b ? ab (mod p)} and S? = {n ? Z* p | n ? a ? b ? ab (mod p)} are given, where Z* p denote a reduced residue system modulo p. We also establish congruences about sum and product of the quadratic residues in S+ or in S? modulo p. Finally, we raise a problem on how to solve Hadamard?s conjecture in the last section.

Abstract:We make many new observations on primitive roots modulo primes.For an odd prime p and an integer c,we establish a theorem concerning ∑g(g+c/p),where g runs over all the primitive roots modulo p among 1,…,p-1,and (·/p) denotes the Legendre symbol.On the basis of our numerical computations,we formulate 35 conjectures involving primitive roots modulo primes.For example,we conjecture that for any prime p there is a primitive root g ＜ p modulo p with g-1 a square,and that for any prime p ＞ 3 there is a prime q ＜ p with the Bernoulli number Bq-1 a primitive root modulo p.We also make related observations on quadratic nonresidues modulo primes and primitive prime divisors of some combinatorial sequences.For example,based on heuristic arguments we conjecture that for any prime p ＞ 3 there exists a Fibonacci number Fk ＜ p/2 which is a quadratic nonresidue modulo p;this implies that there is a deterministic polynomial time algorithm to find square roots of quadratic residues modulo a prime p ＞ 3.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.
Small solutions to inhomogeneous and homogeneous quadratic congruences modulo prime powers

Abstract:We prove asymptotic formulae for small weighted solutions of quadratic congruences of the form $\lambda_1x_1^2+\cdots +\lambda_nx_n^2\equiv \lambda_{n+1}\bmod{p^m}$, where $p$ is a fixed odd prime, $\lambda_1,...,\lambda_{n+1}$ are integer coefficients such that $(\lambda_1\cdots \lambda _{n},p)=1$ and $m\rightarrow \infty$. If $n\ge 6$, $p\ge 5$ and the coefficients are fixed and satisfy $\lambda_1,...,\lambda_n>0$ and $(\lambda_{n+1},p)=1$ (inhomogeneous case), we obtain an asymptotic formula which is valid for integral solutions $(x_1,...,x_n)$ in cubes of side length at least $p^{(1/2+\varepsilon)m}$, centered at the origin. If $n\ge 4$ and $\lambda_{n+1}=0$ (homogeneous case), we prove a result of the same strength for coefficients $\lambda_i$ which are allowed to vary with $m$. These results extend previous results of the first- and the third-named authors and N. Bag.

On a family of simple skew braces

Abstract:Several constructions have been given for families of simple braces, but few examples are known of simple skew braces which are not braces. In this paper, we exhibit the first example of an infinite family of simple skew braces which are not braces and which do not arise from nonabelian simple groups. More precisely, we show that, for any primes $p$, $q$ such that $q$ divides ${(p^p-1)}/{(p-1)}$, there are exactly two simple skew braces (up to isomorphism) of order $p^p q$.

Exact bounds for even vanishing of $K_* (\mathbb{Z}/p^n)$

Abstract:In this note, we prove that $K_{2i} (\mathbb{Z}/p^n) \neq 0$ if and only if $p-1$ divides $i$ and $0 \leq i \leq (p-1) p^{n-2}$, refining the even vanishing theorem of Antieau, Nikolaus and the first author in this case. As a corollary of our proof, we determine that the nilpotence order of $v_1$ in $\pi_* K(\mathbb{Z}/p^n)/p$ is equal to $\frac{p^n-1}{p-1}$. Our proof combines the recent crystallinity result for reduced syntomic cohomology of Hahn, Levy and the second author with the explicit complex computing the syntomic cohomology of $\mathcal{O}_K /\varpi^n$ constructed by Antieau, Nikolaus and the first author.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to find all the prime numbers p for which whenever we add to p an odd square less than p we obtain a number which has at most two different prime factors. We solve completely the cases $p\equiv 1,3,5 \pmod 8$. The idea of the proof in these cases is to find the class number for the quadratic imaginary field $\mathbb{Q}(i\sqrt p)$. Since we know all these quadratic imaginary fields with class number 1, 2 or 4, we are able to solve these cases. The most interesting case is $p\equiv 7 \pmod 8$. We prove in this case that the Ono invariant of the field equals the class number. S. Louboutin succeeded to find all these fields, with one possible exception. Assuming a Restricted Riemann Hypothesis, the list of Louboutin is complete.

Some new infinite families of non-$p$-rational real quadratic fields

Abstract:Fix a finite collection of primes $\{ p_j \}$, not containing $2$ or $3$. Using some observations which arose from attempts to solve the SIC-POVMs problem in quantum information, we give a simple methodology for constructing an infinite family of simultaneously non-$p_j$-rational real quadratic fields, unramified above any of the $p_j$. Alternatively these may be described as infinite sequences of instances of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$, for varying $D$, where every $p_j$ is a $k$-Wall-Sun-Sun prime, or equivalently a generalised Fibonacci-Wieferich prime. One feature of these techniques is that they may be used to yield fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ for which a $p$-power cyclic component of the torsion group of the Galois groups of the maximal abelian pro-$p$-extension of $K$ unramified outside primes above $p$, is of size $p^a$ for $a\geq1$ arbitrarily large.

Abstract:We extend a technique, originally due to the first author and Poonen, for proving cases of the Strong Uniform Boundedness Principle (SUBP) in algebraic dynamics over function fields of positive characteristic. The original method applied to unicritical polynomials for which the characteristic does not divide the degree. We show that many new 1-parameter families of polynomials satisfy the SUBP, including the family of all quadratic polynomials in even characteristic. We also give a new family of non-polynomial, non-Lattès rational functions that satisfies the SUBP.

Abstract:In this work and its sister paper [5] we give a new proof of the famous Linnik theorem bounding the least prime in an arithmetic progression. Using sieve machinery in both papers, we are able to dipense with the log-free zero density bounds and the repulsion property of exceptional zeros, two deep innovations begun by Linnik and reelied on in earlier proofs.

Abstract:In this work we use the number classification in families of the form 6n+1, and 6n+5 with n integer (Such families contain all odd prime numbers greater than 3 and other compound numbers related with primes). We will use this kind of classification in order to attempt an approach to Goldbach strong conjecture. By means of a geometric method of binary bands of numbers we conceive a new form of study of the stated problem.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a large odd prime, let $x=(\log p)^{1+\varepsilon}$ and let $q\ll\log\log p$ be an integer, where $\varepsilon>0$ is a small number. This note proves the existence of small prime quadratic residues and prime quadratic nonresidues in the arithmetic progression $a+qm\ll x$, with relatively prime $1\leq a<q$, unconditionally. The same results are generalized to small prime $k$th power residues and nonresidues, where $k\mid p-1$ and $k\ll\log\log p$.
