Abstract:The $\kappa$-density of a cardinal $\mu\ge\kappa$ is the least cardinality of a dense collection of $\kappa$-subsets of $\mu$ and is denoted by $\mathcal D(\mu,\kappa)$. The Singular Density Hypothesis (SDH) for a singular cardinal $\mu$ of cofinality $cf\mu=\kappa$ is the equation $\mathcal D(\mu,\kappa)=\mu^+$. The Generalized Density Hypothesis (GDH) for $\mu$ and $\lambda$ such that $\lambda\le\mu$ is: $\mathcal D(\mu,\lambda)=\mu$ if $cf\mu\not=cf\lambda$ and $\mathcal D(\mu,\lambda)=\mu^+$ if $cf\mu=cf\lambda$. Density is shown to satisfy Silver's theorem. The most important case is: Theorem 2.6. If $\kappa=cf\kappa<\theta=cf\mu<\mu$ and the set of cardinals $\lambda<\mu$ of cofinality $\kappa$ that satisfy the \textsf{SDH} is stationary in $\mu$ then the SDH holds at $\mu$. A more general version is given in Theorem 2.8 A corollary of Theorem 2.6 is: Theorem 3.2 If the Singular Density Hypothesis holds for all sufficiently large singular cardinals of some fixed cofinality $\kappa$, then for all cardinals $\lambda$ with $cf\lambda \ge \kappa$, for all sufficiently large $\mu$, the GDH holds.

Abstract:Text We compute the one-level density of zeros of order ℓ Dirichlet L-functions over function fields F q [ t ] for ℓ = 3 , 4 in the Kummer setting ( q ≡ 1 ( mod ℓ ) ) and for ℓ = 3 , 4 , 6 in the non-Kummer setting ( q ≢ 1 ( mod ℓ ) ). In each case, we obtain a main term predicted by Random Matrix Theory (RMT) and lower order terms not predicted by RMT. Abstract:Kneser's theorem in the integers asserts that denoting by $ \underline{\mathrm{d}}$ the lower asymptotic density, if $\underline{\mathrm{d}}(X_1+\cdots+X_k)<\sum_{i=1}^k\underline{\mathrm{d}}(X_i)$ then the sumset $X_1+\cdots+X_k$ is \emph{periodic} for some positive integer $q$. In this article we establish a similar statement for upper Buck density and compare it with the corresponding result due to Jin involving upper Banach density. We also provide the construction of sequences verifying counterintuitive properties with respect to Buck density of a sequence $A$ and its sumset $A+A$.

On an indivisibility version of Iizuka's conjecture

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the existence of positive density collection of $d\in\mathbb{N}$ such that class numbers of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}), \ \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1})\dots\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+n})$ are not divisible by $3^k$ for $n=3^{k+1}-5$ for any $k\in\mathbb{N}$. This result constitutes the indivisibility counterpart of Iizuka's conjecture. For the same choice of $n$, we prove the existence of positive density collection of $d$, in the set of negative integers, such that the class numbers of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}), \ \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1}),\dots,\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+n})$ are not divisible by $3^{k+1}$. Further, we write the set of all square-free natural numbers as an increasing sequence $(d_n)$ and prove the existence of positive density collection of $i$ in the set of natural numbers such that the class numbers of the number fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d_i}), \ \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d_{i+1}}),\ \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d_{i+2}}),$ $ \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d_{i+3}}),\dots, \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d_{i+n}})$ are not divisible by $3^k$ for $n=3^{k+1}-5$. For higher degree, we show that certain limit of the collection of imaginary bi-quadratic fields whose class number is not divisible by $3$ over all the imaginary biquadratic fields is positive.

Abstract:Motzkin posed the problem of finding the maximal density mu(M) of sets of integers in which the differences given by a set M do not occur. The problem is already settled when vertical bar M vertical bar <= 2 or M is a finite arithmetic progression. In this paper, we determine mu(M) when M has some other structure. For example, we determine mu(M) when M is a finite geometric progression.
Ulam's method for computing stationary densities of invariant measures for piecewise convex maps with countably infinite number of branches

Abstract:Let $\tau: I=[0, 1]\to [0, 1]$ be a piecewise convex map with countably infinite number of branches. In \cite{GIR}, the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measure (ACIM) $\mu$ for $\tau$ and the exactness of the system $(\tau, \mu)$ has been proven. In this paper, we develop an Ulam method for approximation of $f^*$, the density of ACIM $\mu$. We construct a sequence $\{\tau_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$ of maps $\tau_n: I\to I$ s. t. $\tau_n$ has a finite number of branches and the sequence $\tau_n$ converges to $\tau$ almost uniformly. Using supremum norms and Lasota-Yorke type inequalities, we prove the existence of ACIMs $\mu_n$ for $\tau_n$ with the densities $f_n$. For a fixed $n$, we apply Ulam's method with $k$ subintervals to $\tau_n$ and compute approximations $f_{n,k}$ of $f_n$. We prove that $f_{n,k}\to f^*$ as $n\to \infty, k\to \infty,$ both a.e. and in $L^1$. We provide examples of piecewise convex maps $\tau$ with countably infinite number of branches, their approximations $\tau_n$ with finite number of branches and for increasing values of parameter $k$ show the errors $\|f^*-f_{n,k}\|_1$.

The density and distribution of CM elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$

Abstract:In this paper we study the density and distribution of CM elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. In particular, we prove that the natural density of CM elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, when ordered by naive height, is zero. Furthermore, we analyze the distribution of these curves among the thirteen possible CM orders of class number one. Our results show that asymptotically, $100\%$ of them have complex multiplication by the order $\mathbb{Z}\left[\frac{-1 + \sqrt{-3}}{2} \right]$, that is, have $j$-invariant 0. We conduct this analysis within two different families of representatives for the $\mathbb{Q}$-isomorphism classes of CM elliptic curves: one commonly used in the literature and another constructed using the theory of twists. As part of our proofs, we give asymptotic formulas for the number of elliptic curves with a given $j$-invariant and bounded naive height.

On Ulam widths of finitely presented infinite simple groups

Abstract:A fundamental notion in group theory, which originates in an article of Ulam and von Neumann from $1947$ is uniform simplicity. A group $G$ is said to be $n$-uniformly simple for $n \in \mathbf{N}$ if for every $f,g\in G\setminus \{id\}$, there is a product of no more than $n$ conjugates of $g$ and $g^{-1}$ that equals $f$. Then $G$ is uniformly simple if it is $n$-uniformly simple for some $n \in \mathbf{N}$, and we refer to the smallest such $n$ as the Ulam width, denoted as $\mathcal{R}(G)$. If $G$ is simple but not uniformly simple, one declares $\mathcal{R}(G)=\infty$. In this article, we construct for each $n\in \mathbf{N}$, a finitely presented infinite simple group $G$ such that $n<\mathcal{R}(G)<\infty$. To our knowledge, these are the first such examples among the class of finitely presented infinite simple groups. Moreover, our examples are also of type $F_{\infty}$, which means that they are fundamental groups of aspherical CW complexes with finitely many cells in each dimension. Uniformly simple groups are in particular uniformly perfect: there is an $n\in \mathbf{N}$ such that every element of the group can be expressed as a product of at most $n$ commutators of elements in the group. We also show that the analogous notion of width for uniform perfection is also unbounded for our family of finitely presented infinite simple groups. Finally, since these notions of width are invariants of elementary equivalence, our construction also provides a natural infinite family of pairwise non-elementarily equivalent finitely presented infinite simple groups.

Abstract:Let D be the ring of S -integers in a global field and its profinite completion. Given we consider its closure and ask what can be learned from about the "size" of X . In particular, we ask when the density of X is equal to the Haar measure of We provide a general definition of density which encompasses the most commonly used ones. Using it we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the equality between density and measure which subsumes a criterion due to Poonen and Stoll. We also show how Ekedahl's sieve fits into our setting and find conditions ensuring that can be written as a product of local closures. In another direction, we extend the Davenport–Erdős theorem to every D as above and offer a new interpretation of it as a "density=measure" result. Our point of view also provides a simple proof that in any D the set of elements divisible by at most k distinct primes has density 0 for any Finally, we show that the closure of the set of prime elements of D is the union of the group of units of with a negligible part.

It has been proved by A-J, that for all positive integers $k,\ell$ such that $1\leq \ell\leq k$ and $(\ell,k)=1$,} \begin{equation} \sum_{n\geq 2;\;p_1(n) \equiv \ell\;(mod\;k)}\frac{\mu(n)\omega(n)}{n} = 0, \nonumber \end{equation} \textit{{\small where $\mu(n)$ is the Möbius function, $\omega(n)$ is the number of distinct prime factors of $n$, and $p_1(n)$ is the smallest prime factor of $n$. Quotient order density of ordinary triangle groups

Abstract:In this paper, we show that the natural density (among the positive integers) of the set of orders of the finite quotients of any ordinary triangle group is zero. This is achieved using methods inspired by a 1976 theorem of Bertram on large cyclic subgroups of finite groups and an application of the Turan-Kubilius inequality from asymptotic number theory. The question of the natural density of the set of finite quotient orders of triangle groups was first considered by Larson, then May and Zimmerman and then Tucker, who brought it to the author's attention.

Exceptional Points for Density Modulo 1

Abstract:It is well known that almost every dilation of a sequence of real numbers, that diverges to $\infty$, is dense modulo~1. This paper studies the exceptional set of points -- those for which the dilation is not dense. Specifically, we consider the Hausdorff and modified box dimensions of the set of exceptional points. In particular, we show that the dimension of this set may be any number between 0 and 1. Similar results are obtained for two ``natural'' subsets of the set of exceptional points. Furthermore, the paper calculates the dimension of several sets of points, defined by certain constraints on their binary expansion.

Abstract:Abstract upper densities are monotone and subadditive functions from the power set of positive integers into the unit real interval that generalize the upper densities used in number theory, including the upper asymptotic density, the upper Banach density, and the upper logarithmic density. At the open problem session of the Workshop ``Densities and their application'', held at St. Étienne in July 2013, G. Grekos asked a question whether there is a ``nice'' abstract upper density, whose the family of null sets is precisely a given ideal of subsets of $\mathbb{N}$, where ``nice'' would mean the properties of the familiar densities consider in number theory. In 2018, M. Di Nasso and R. Jin (Acta Arith. 185 (2018), no. 4) showed that the answer is positive for the summable ideals (for instance, the family of finite sets and the family of sequences whose series of reciprocals converge) when ``nice'' density means translation invariant and rich density (i.e. density which is onto the unit interval). In this paper we extend their result to all ideals with the Baire property.

Non-existence of Ulrich modules over Cohen-Macaulay local rings

Abstract:Over a Cohen-Macaulay local ring, the minimal number of generators of a maximal Cohen-Macaulay module is bounded above by its multiplicity. In 1984 Ulrich asked whether there always exist modules for which equality holds; such modules are known nowadays as Ulrich modules. We answer this question in the negative by constructing families of two dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings that have no Ulrich modules. Some of these examples are Gorenstein normal domains; others are even complete intersection domains, though not normal.

A Density Theorem for Higher Order Sums of Prime Numbers

Abstract:Let $P$ be a subset of the primes of lower density strictly larger than $\frac12$. Then, every sufficiently large even integer is a sum of four primes from the set $P$. We establish similar results for $k$-summands, with $k\geq 4$, and for $k \geq 4$ distinct subsets of primes. This extends the work of H.~Li, H.~Pan, as well as X.~Shao on sums of three primes, and A.~Alsteri and X.~Shao on sums of two primes. The primary new contributions come from elementary combinatorial lemmas.

Kahane's upper density and syndetic sets in LCA groups

Abstract:Asymptotic uniform upper density, shortened as a.u.u.d., or simply upper density, is a classical notion which was first introduced by Kahane for sequences in the real line. Syndetic sets were defined by Gottschalk and Hendlund. For a locally compact group $G$, a set $S\subset G$ is syndetic, if there exists a compact subset $C\Subset G$ such that $SC=G$. Syndetic sets play an important role in various fields of applications of topological groups and semigroups, ergodic theory and number theory. A lemma in the book of Fürstenberg says that once a subset $A \subset {\mathbb Z}$ has positive a.u.u.d., then its difference set $A-A$ is syndetic. The construction of a reasonable notion of a.u.u.d. in general locally compact Abelian groups (LCA groups for short) was not known for long, but in the late 2000's several constructions were worked out to generalize it from the base cases of ${\mathbb Z}^d$ and ${\mathbb R}^d$. With the notion available, several classical results of the Euclidean setting became accessible even in general LCA groups. Here we work out various versions in a general LCA group $G$ of the classical statement that if a set $S\subset G$ has positive asymptotic uniform upper density, then the difference set $S-S$ is syndetic.

Abstract:How many permutations are needed so that every infinite-coinfinite set of natural numbers with asymptotic density can be rearranged to no longer have the same density? We prove that the density number $\mathfrak{dd}$, which answers this question, is equal to the least size of a non-meager set of reals, $\mathsf{non} (\mathcal{M})$. The same argument shows that a slight modification of the rearrangement number $\mathfrak{rr}$ of~\cite{BBBHHL20} is equal to $\mathsf{non} (\mathcal{M})$, and similarly for a cardinal invariant related to large-scale topology introduced by Banakh~\cite{Ba23}, thus answering a question of the latter. We then consider variants of $\mathfrak{dd}$ given by restricting the possible densities of the original set and / or of the permuted set, providing lower and upper bounds for these cardinals and proving consistency of strict inequalities. We finally look at cardinals defined in terms of relative density and of asymptotic mean, and relate them to the rearrangement numbers of~\cite{BBBHHL20}.
