Abstract:In this paper we present quantitative comparisons between the Wentzel-Laplace eigenvalues, Steklov eigenvalues and Laplacian eigenvalues on the boundary of the target manifold using Riccati comparison techniques to estimate the Hessian of the distance function from the boundary.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain some comparisons of the Dirichlet, Neumann and Laplacian eigenvalues on graphs. We also discuss their rigidities and some of their applications including some Lichnerowicz-type, Fiedler-type and Friedman-type estimates for Dirichlet eigenvalues and Neumann eigenvalues. The comparisons on Neumann eigenvalues can be translated to comparisons on Steklov eigenvalues in our setting. So, some of the results can be viewed as extensions for parts of the works of \cite{HHW} by Hua-Huang-Wang, and parts of our previous works \cite{SY,SY2}.

Abstract:By methods of stochastic analysis on Riemannian manifolds, we develop two approaches to determine an explicit constant $c(D)$ for an $n$-dimensional compact manifold $D$ with boundary such that $\frac{\lambda}{n}\,\|\phi\|_{\infty} \leq \|{\rm Hess}\ \phi\|_{\infty}\leq c(D)\lambda \,\|\phi\|_{\infty}$ holds for any Dirichlet eigenfunction $\phi$ of $-\Delta$ with eigenvalue $\lambda$. Our results provide the sharp Hessian estimate $\|{\rm Hess}\ \phi\|_{\infty}\lesssim \lambda^{\frac{n+3}{4}}$. Corresponding Hessian estimates for Neumann eigenfunctions are derived in the second part of the paper.

Abstract:For the eigenvalue problem of the Dirichlet Laplacian on a bounded domain in Euclidean space R-n, we obtain estimates for the upper bounds of the gaps between consecutive eigenvalues which are the best possible in terms of the orders of the eigenvalues. Therefore, it is reasonable to conjecture that this type of estimate also holds for the eigenvalue problem on a Riemannian manifold. We give some particular examples.

Abstract:Abstract We associate a sequence of variational eigenvalues to any Radon measure on a compact Riemannian manifold. For particular choices of measures, we recover the Laplace, Steklov and other classical eigenvalue problems. In the first part of the paper we study the properties of variational eigenvalues and establish a general continuity result, which shows for a sequence of measures converging in the dual of an appropriate Sobolev space, that the associated eigenvalues converge as well. The second part of the paper is devoted to various applications to shape optimization. The main theme is studying sharp isoperimetric inequalities for Steklov eigenvalues without any assumption on the number of connected components of the boundary. In particular, we solve the isoperimetric problem for each Steklov eigenvalue of planar domains: the best upper bound for the k -th perimeter-normalized Steklov eigenvalue is $$8\pi k$$ 8 π k , which is the best upper bound for the $$k^{\text {th}}$$ k th area-normalised eigenvalue of the Laplacian on the sphere. The proof involves realizing a weighted Neumann problem as a limit of Steklov problems on perforated domains. For $$k=1$$ k = 1 , the number of connected boundary components of a maximizing sequence must tend to infinity, and we provide a quantitative lower bound on the number of connected components. A surprising consequence of our analysis is that any maximizing sequence of planar domains with fixed perimeter must collapse to a point.

Abstract:We prove a sharp upper bound and a lower bound for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Wentzell-Laplace operator on compact manifolds with boundary and an isoperimetric inequality for the same eigenvalue in the case where the manifold is a bounded domain in a Euclidean space. We study some fourth order Stekolv problems and obtain isoperimetric upper bound for the first eigenvalue of them. We also find all the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for two kind of fourth order Stekolv problems on a Euclidean ball.

Metric upper bounds for Steklov and Laplace eigenvalues

Abstract:We prove two upper bounds for the Steklov eigenvalues of a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. The first involves the volume of the manifold and of its boundary, as well as packing and volume growth constants of the boundary and its distortion. Its proof is based on a metric-measure space technique that was introduced by Colbois and Maerten. The second bound is in terms of the extrinsic diameter of the boundary and its injectivity radius. It is obtained from a concentration inequality, akin to Gromov-Milman concentration for closed manifolds. By applying these bounds to cylinders over closed manifold, we obtain bounds for eigenvalues of the Laplace operator, in the spirit of Grigor'yan-Netrusov-Yau and of Berger-Croke. For a family of manifolds that has uniformly bounded volume and boundary of fixed intrinsic geometry, we deduce that a large first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue implies that each boundary component is contained in a ball of small extrinsic radius.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a first Dirichlet eigenfunction of the weighted $p$-Laplacian on a bounded domain in a complete weighted Riemannian manifold. By constructing gradient estimates for a first eigenfunction, we obtain some relationships between weighted $p$-Laplacian first eigenvalues. As an immediate application, we also obtain some eigenvalue comparison results between the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the weighted Laplacian, the first clamped plate eigenvalue and the first buckling eigenvalue.

Abstract:In this paper, by using the Bochner technique on almost Hermitian manifolds, we obtain a complex Hessian comparison for almost Hermitian manifolds generalizing the Laplacian comparison for almost Hermitian manifolds by Tossati, and reprove a diameter estimate for almost Hermitian manifolds by Gray. Moreover, we obtain a sharp eigenvalue estimate on quasi Kaehler manifolds and a sharp Hessian comparison on nearly Kaehler manifolds.

Abstract:Steklov eigenvalue problem of Helmholtz equation is considered in the present paper. Steklov eigenvalue problem is reduced to a new variational formula on the boundary of a given domain, in which the self-adjoint property of the original differential operator is kept and the calculating of hyper-singular integral is avoided. A numerical example showing the efficiency of this method and an optimal error estimate are given.

Abstract:Comparison estimates are an important technical device in the study of regularity problems for quasilinear possibly degenerate elliptic and parabolic equations. Such tools have been employed indispensably in many papers of Mingione, Duzaar-Mingione, and Kuusi-Mingione, etc. on certain measure datum problems to obtain pointwise bounds for solutions and their full or fractional derivatives in terms of appropriate linear or nonlinear potentials. However, a comparison estimate for $p$-Laplace type elliptic equations with measure data is still unavailable in the strongly singular case $1< p\leq \frac{3n-2}{2n-1}$, where $n\geq 2$ is the dimension of the ambient space. This issue will be completely resolved in this work by proving a comparison estimate in a slightly larger range $1<p<3/2$. Applications include a `sublinear' Poincaré type inequality, pointwise bounds for solutions and their derivatives by Wolff's and Riesz's potentials, respectively. Some global pointwise and weighted estimates are also obtained for bounded domains, which enable us to treat a quasilinear Riccati type equation with possibly sublinear growth in the gradient.

Abstract:In spectral theory, the multiplicity of nearly degenerate eigenvalues presents significant challenges. This paper introduces a new difference quotient formula to capture the behavior of nearly degenerate Laplacian eigenvalues resulting from domain perturbations. Additionally, we propose a novel numerical algorithm for rigorously estimating the difference quotient of these multiple eigenvalues in response to domain deformation, using a recently developed guaranteed computation method for eigenvalue problems. As an application, we solve the open problem of the simplicity of the second Dirichlet eigenvalue for nearly equilateral triangles, offering a partial solution to Conjecture 6.47 in A. Henrot's book ``Shape Optimization and Spectral Theory."

Abstract:On closed Riemannian manifolds with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded from below and bounded gradient of the potential function, we obtain lower bounds for all positive eigenvalues of the Beltrami-Laplacian instead of the weighted Laplacian. The lower bound of the k th eigenvalue depends on k , the lower bound of Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature, the gradient bound of the potential function, and the dimension and diameter upper bound of the manifold, but the volume of the manifold is not involved.

Abstract:In this work, we present an alternative formulation of the higher eigenvalue problem associated to the infinity Laplacian, which opens the door for numerical approximation of eigenfunctions. A rigorous analysis is performed to show the equivalence of the new formulation to the traditional one. Subsequently, we present consistent monotone schemes to approximate infinity ground states and higher eigenfunctions on grids. We prove that our method converges (up to a subsequence) to a viscosity solution of the eigenvalue problem, and perform numerical experiments which investigate theoretical conjectures and compute eigenfunctions on a variety of different domains.

Abstract:We derive various eigenvalue estimates for the Hodge Laplacian acting on differential forms on weighted Riemannian manifolds. Our estimates unify and extend various results from the literature and provide a number of geometric applications. In particular, we derive an inequality which relates the eigenvalues of the Jacobi operator for f -minimal hypersurfaces and the spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian.

Abstract:This work considers the Neumann eigenvalue problem for the weighted Laplacian on a Riemannian manifold $(M,g,\partial M)$ under the singular perturbation. This perturbation involves the imposition of vanishing Dirichlet boundary conditions on a small portion of the boundary. We derive a sharp asymptotic of the perturbed eigenvalues, as the Dirichlet part shrinks to a point $x^*\in \partial M$, in terms of the spectral parameters of the unperturbed system. This asymptotic demonstrates the impact of the geometric properties of the manifold at a specific point $x^*$. Furthermore, it becomes evident that the shape of the Dirichlet region holds significance as it impacts the first terms of the asymptotic. A crucial part of this work is the construction of the singularity structure of the restricted Neumann Green's function which may be of independent interest. We employ a fusion of layer potential techniques and pseudo-differential operators during this work.

Abstract:In this article, we prove Talenti’s comparison theorem for Poisson equation on complete noncompact Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature. Furthermore, we obtain the FaberKrahn inequality for the first eigenvalue of Dirichlet Laplacian, Land L∞-moment spectrum, especially Saint-Venant theorem for torsional rigidity and a reverse Hölder inequality for eigenfunctions of Dirichlet Laplacian.
On the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on fibred manifolds

Abstract:We prove various comparison theorems of the $i$-th eigenvalue $\lambda_i$ of the Laplacian on fibred Riemannian manifolds by using fiberwise spherical and Euclidean (or hyperbolic) symmetrization. In particular we generalize the Lichnerowicz inequality and the Faber-Krahn inequality to fiber bundles, and prove a counterpart to Cheng's $\lambda_1$ comparison theorem under a lower Ricci curvature bound. By applying these, it is shown that $\lambda_1,\cdots,\lambda_k$ of a fiber bundle given by a Riemannian submersion with totally geodesic fibers of sufficiently positive Ricci curvature are respectively equal to $\lambda_1,\cdots,\lambda_k$ of its base, and $\lambda_1$ of a (possibly singular) fibration with Euclidean subsets as fibers is no less than $\lambda_1$ of the disk bundle obtained by replacing each fiber with a Euclidean disk of the same dimension and volume.

Abstract:This article studies the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian equations Δu =-λ u, χ∈ Ω, u=0, δ∈Ω, where Ω ⊂ Rn is a smooth bounded convex domain. By using the method of appropriate barrier function combined with the maximum principle, authors obtain a sharp lower bound of the difference of the first two eigenvalues for the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem.
