Abstract:The logic which describes quantum robots is not orthodox quantum logic, but a deductive calculus which reproduces the quantum tasks (computational processes, and actions) taking into account quantum superposition and quantum entanglement. A way toward the realization of intelligent quantum robots is to adopt a quantum metalanguage to control quantum robots. A physical implementation of a quantum metalanguage might be the use of coherent states in brain signals.

Abstract:Many problems intractable on classical devices could be solved by algorithms explicitly based on quantum mechanical laws, i.e. exploiting quantum information processing. As a result, increasing efforts from different fields are nowadays directed to the actual realization of quantum devices. Here we provide an introduction to Quantum Information Processing, focusing on a promising setup for its implementation, represented by molecular spin clusters known as Molecular Nanomagnets. We introduce the basic tools to understand and design quantum algorithms, always referring to their actual realization on a molecular spin architecture. We then examine the most important sources of noise in this class of systems and then one of their most peculiar features, i.e. the possibility to exploit many (more than two) available states to encode information and to self-correct it from errors via proper design of quantum error correction codes. Finally, we present some examples of quantum algorithms proposed and implemented on a molecular spin qudit hardware.

Abstract:Molecular biology and biochemistry interpret microscopic processes in the living world in terms of molecular structures and their interactions, which are quantum mechanical by their very nature. Whereas the theoretical foundations of these interactions are very well established, the computational solution of the relevant quantum mechanical equations is very hard. However, much of molecular function in biology can be understood in terms of classical mechanics, where the interactions of electrons and nuclei have been mapped onto effective classical surrogate potentials that model the interaction of atoms or even larger entities. The simple mathematical structure of these potentials offers huge computational advantages; however, this comes at the cost that all quantum correlations and the rigorous many-particle nature of the interactions are omitted. In this work, we discuss how quantum computation may advance the practical usefulness of the quantum foundations of molecular biology by offering computational advantages for simulations of biomolecules. We not only discuss typical quantum mechanical problems of the electronic structure of biomolecules in this context, but also consider the dominating classical problems (such as protein folding and drug design) as well as data-driven approaches of bioinformatics and the degree to which they might become amenable to quantum simulation and quantum computation.

Abstract:The actual (classical) Brain-Computer Interface attempts to use brain signals to drive suitable actuators performing the actions corresponding to subject's intention. However this goal is not fully reached, and when BCI works, it does only in particular situations. The reason of this unsatisfactory result is that intention cannot be conceived simply as a set of classical input-output relationships. It is therefore necessary to resort to quantum theory, allowing the occurrence of stable coherence phenomena, in turn underlying high-level mental processes such as intentions and strategies. More precisely, within the context of a dissipative Quantum Field Theory of brain operation it is possible to introduce generalized coherent states associated, within the framework of logic, to the assertions of a quantum metalanguage. The latter controls the quantum-mechanical computing corresponding to standard mental operation. It thus become possible to conceive a Quantum Cyborg in which a human mind controls, through a quantum metalanguage, the operation of an artificial quantum computer.

Abstract:The application of quantum computation and information in robotics has caught the attention of researchers off late. The field of robotics has always put its effort on the minimization of the space occupied by the robot, and on making the robot `smarter. `The smartness of a robot is its sensitivity to its surroundings and the user input and its ability to react upon them desirably. Quantum phenomena in robotics make sure that the robots occupy less space and the ability of quantum computation to process the huge amount of information effectively, consequently making the robot smarter. Braitenberg vehicle is a simple circuited robot that moves according to the input that its sensors receive. Building upon that, we propose a quantum robot vehicle that is `smart' enough to understand the complex situations more than that of a simple Braitenberg vehicle and navigate itself as per the obstacles present. It can detect an obstacle-free path and can navigate itself accordingly. It also takes input from the user when there is more than one free path available. When left with no option on the ground, it can airlift itself off the ground. As these vehicles sort of `react to the surrounding conditions, this idea can be used to build artificial life and genetic algorithms, space exploration and deep-earth exploration probes, and a handy tool in defense and intelligence services.

A robust framework for quantum computation using quasi-hidden molecular degrees of freedom

Abstract:We discuss a novel approach to quantum information processing with molecules based on molecular degrees of freedom which are isolated from the environment as well as from the rest of the molecule. Such a degree of freedom can provide long-term quantum storage even in a noisy environment, and provides an independent protected quantum memory while quantum operations are performed between the rest of the molecule and external systems. We present several possibilities for realizing a quasi-hidden degree of freedom in a molecule, and discuss a number of examples for using such a degree of freedom in practice. Using quasi-hidden degrees of freedom could substantially improve the prospects for a molecule-based quantum computer.

Abstract:Utilising the properties of quantum mechanics, i.e., entanglement, parallelism, etc., a quantum structure is proposed for representing and manipulating emotion space of robots. This quantum emotion space (QES) provides a mechanism to extend emotion interpretation to the quantum computing domain whereby fewer resources are required and, by using unitary transformations, it facilitates easier tracking of emotion transitions over different intervals in the emotion space. The QES is designed as an intuitive and graphical visualisation of the emotion state as a curve in a cuboid, so that an “emotion sensor” could be used to track the emotion transition as well as its manipulation. This ability to use transition matrices to convey manipulation of emotions suggests the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach. Our study is primarily influenced by two developments. First, the massive amounts of data, complexity of control, planning and reasoning required for today’s sophisticated automation processes necessitates the need to equip robots with powerful sensors to enable them adapt and operate in all kinds of environments. Second, the renewed impetus and inevitable transition to the quantum computing paradigm suggests that quantum robots will have a role to play in future data processing and human-robot interaction either as standalone units or as part of larger hybrid systems. The QES proposed in this study provides a quantum mechanical formulation for quantum emotion as well as a platform to process, track, and manipulate instantaneous transitions in a robot’s emotion. The new perspective will open broad areas, such as applications in emotion recognition and emotional intelligence for quantum robots.

Abstract:The widespread use of molecular-level motion in key natural processes suggests that great rewards could come from bridging the gap between the present generation of synthetic molecular machines—which by and large function as switches—and the machines of the macroscopic world, which utilize the synchronized behavior of integrated components to perform more sophisticated tasks than is possible with any individual switch. Should we try to make molecular machines of greater complexity by trying to mimic machines from the macroscopic world or instead apply unfamiliar (and no doubt have to discover or invent currently unknown) mechanisms utilized by biological machines? Here we try to answer that question by exploring some of the advances made to date using bio-inspired machine mechanisms.

Abstract:Biological systems are dynamical, constantly exchanging energy and matter with the environment in order to maintain the non-equilibrium state synonymous with living. Developments in observational techniques have allowed us to study biological dynamics on increasingly small scales. Such studies have revealed evidence of quantum mechanical effects, which cannot be accounted for by classical physics, in a range of biological processes. Quantum biology is the study of such processes, and here we provide an outline of the current state of the field, as well as insights into future directions.

Abstract:Nature is a neverending source of inspiration for technology. Quantum physics suggests applications toward quantum computing. Swarms’ self-organization leads to robotic swarm developments. Here, quantum computing is applied to swarm robotics. We model local interactions with a quantum circuit, testing it on simulators and quantum computers. To relate local with global behavior, we develop a block matrix-based model. Diagonal sub-matrices contain information on single robots; off-diagonal sub-matrices are the pairwise interaction terms. Comparing different swarms means comparing different block matrices. Choosing initial values and computation rules for off-diagonal blocks (with a particular logic gate), different behaviors can be modeled. To show the global-behavior emergence, we propose a specific pairwise-interaction logic gate, embedding the corresponding quantum circuit in an ant-foraging-inspired algorithm. To implement a first application, we choose the foraging-ant behavior for its clarity and importance in nature, running experiments with toy swarms (3 and 10 robots). We consider ants’ individual and collective back-and-forth movements between the nest and the food source, analyzing the effect of entanglement. Our research can help shed light on quantum potentialities for swarms. The implications of our findings and results concern the future development of a decision-making system, based on the advantages of swarms and quantum computing. While an ant-foraging scenario is chosen as an example of application, our study is not focused on optimization. We present a new methodology, open to non-optimal solutions. Future developments can concern improvements toward optimization.

Abstract:The main physical features and operating principles of isothermal nanomachines in microworld are reviewed, which are common for both classical and quantum machines. Especial attention is paid to the dual and constructive role of dissipation and thermal fluctuations, fluctuation-dissipation theorem, heat losses and free energy transduction, thermodynamic efficiency, and thermodynamic efficiency at maximum power. Several basic models are considered and discussed to highlight generic physical features. Our exposition allows to spot some common fallacies which continue to plague the literature, in particular, erroneous beliefs that one should minimize friction and lower the temperature to arrive at a high performance of Brownian machines, and that thermodynamic efficiency at maximum power cannot exceed one-half. The emerging topic of anomalous molecular motors operating sub-diffusively but highly efficiently in viscoelastic environment of living cells is also discussed.

Abstract:The unique capability of quantum mechanics to evolve alternative possibilities in parallel is appealing and over the years a number of quantum algorithms have been developed offering great computational benefits. Systems coupled to the environment lose quantum coherence quickly and realization of schemes based on unitarity might be impossible. Recent discovery of room temperature quantum coherence in light harvesting complexes opens up new possibilities to borrow concepts from biology to use quantum effects for computational purposes. While it has been conjectured that light harvesting complexes such as the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) complex in the green sulfur bacteria performs an efficient quantum search similar to the quantum Grover's algorithm the analogy has yet to be established. In this work we show that quantum dissipation plays an essential role in the quantum search performed in the FMO complex and it is fundamentally different from known algorithms. In the FMO complex not just the optimal level of phase breaking is present to avoid both quantum localization and Zeno trapping but it can harness quantum dissipation as well to speed the process even further up. With detailed quantum calculations taking into account both phase breaking and quantum dissipation we show that the design of the FMO complex has been evolutionarily optimized and works faster than pure quantum or classical-stochastic algorithms. Inspired by the findings we introduce a new computational concept based on decoherent quantum evolution. While it is inspired by light harvesting systems, the new computational devices can also be realized on different material basis opening new magnitude scales for miniaturization and speed.

Abstract:Application of quantum principles to living cells requires a new approximation of the full quantum mechanical description of intracellular dynamics. We discuss what principal elements any such good approximation should contain. As one such element, the notion of "Catalytic force" Cf is introduced. Cf is the effect of the molecular target of catalysis on the catalytic microenvironment that adjusts the microenvironment towards a state that facilitates the catalytic act. This phenomenon is experimentally testable and has an intriguing implication for biological organization and evolution, as it amounts to "optimization without natural selection of replicators". Unlike the statistical-mechanical approaches to self-organization, the Cf principle does not encounter the problem of "tradeoff between stability and complexity" at the level of individual cell. Physically, the Cf is considered as a harmonic-like force of reaction, which keeps the state of the cell close to the ground state, defined here as a state where enzymatic acts work most efficiently. Ground state is subject to unitary evolution, and serves as a starting point in a general strategy of quantum description of intracellular processes, termed here "Euclidean approach". The next step of this strategy is transition from the description of ground state to that one of growing state, and we suggest how it can be accomplished using arguments from the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Finally, given that the most reliable and informative observable of an individual cell is the sequence of its genome, we propose that the non-classical correlations between individual molecular events at the single cell level could be easiest to detect using high throughput DNA sequencing.

Abstract:A learning algorithm based on the state superposition principle is presented. The theoretical analysis shows that the needed fundamental transformations to realize this algorithm are the same as those needed in the Grover algorithm and are within current state-of-the-art technology. The simulated experiment shows that the quantum learning algorithm can help robots to learn faster and to become more intelligent.

Abstract:The concept of an embodied intelligent agent is a key concept in modern artificial intelligence and robotics. Physically, an agent is an open system embedded in an environment that it interacts with through sensors and actuators. It contains a learning algorithm that correlates the sensor and actuator results by learning features about its environment. In this article we present a simple optical agent that uses light to probe and learn components of its environment. In our scenario, the quantum agent outperforms a classical agent: The quantum agent probes the world using single photon pulses, where its classical counterpart uses a weak coherent state with an average photon number equal to one. We analyze the thermodynamic behavior of both agents, showing that improving the agent's estimate of the world corresponds to an increase in average work done on the sensor by the actuator pulse. Thus, our model provides a useful toy model for studying the interface between machine learning, optics, and statistical thermodynamics.

Collective Molecular Machines: Multidimensionality and Reconfigurability

Abstract:Molecular machines are key to cellular activity where they are involved in converting chemical and light energy into efficient mechanical work. During the last 60 years, designing molecular structures capable of generating unidirectional mechanical motion at the nanoscale has been the topic of intense research. Effective progress has been made, attributed to advances in various fields such as supramolecular chemistry, biology and nanotechnology, and informatics. However, individual molecular machines are only capable of producing nanometer work and generally have only a single functionality. In order to address these problems, collective behaviors realized by integrating several or more of these individual mechanical units in space and time have become a new paradigm. In this review, we comprehensively discuss recent developments in the collective behaviors of molecular machines. In particular, collective behavior is divided into two paradigms. One is the appropriate integration of molecular machines to efficiently amplify molecular motions and deformations to construct novel functional materials. The other is the construction of swarming modes at the supramolecular level to perform nanoscale or microscale operations. We discuss design strategies for both modes and focus on the modulation of features and properties. Subsequently, in order to address existing challenges, the idea of transferring experience gained in the field of micro/nano robotics is presented, offering prospects for future developments in the collective behavior of molecular machines.
Small but large: Single organic molecules as hybrid platforms for quantum technologies

Abstract:Single organic molecules embedded in solid-state matrices exhibit remarkable optical properties, making them competitive candidates for single-photon sources and quantum nonlinear optical elements. However, the lack of long-lived internal states imposes significant constraints on their application in the broader field of quantum technologies. In this article, we reexamine the single-molecule host-guest system from first principles, elaborate on the rich internal states this system encompasses and put forward strategies to harness them for applications in quantum memory, spin-photon interface, spin register, and optomechanics. Further, we discuss the potential of leveraging the vast chemical space of molecules, and highlight the challenges and opportunities for molecular systems along these directions.

Abstract:The development of small-scale sensors and actuators enables the construction of smart matter in which physical properties of materials are controlled in a distributed manner. In this paper, we describe how quantum computers could provide an additional capability, programmable control over some quantum behaviors of such materials. This emphasizes the need for spatial coherence, in contrast to the more commonly discussed issue of temporal coherence for quantum computing. We also discuss some possible applications and engineering issues involved in exploiting this possibility.

Abstract:Quantum technologies leverage the laws of quantum physics to achieve performance advantages in applications ranging from computing to communications and sensing. They have been proposed to have a range of applications in biological science. This includes better microscopes and biosensors, improved simulations of molecular processes, and new capabilities to control the behaviour of biomolecules and chemical reactions. Quantum effects are also predicted, with much debate, to have functional benefits in biology, for instance, allowing more efficient energy transport and improving the rate of enzyme catalysis. Conversely, the robustness of biological systems to disorder from their environment has led to proposals to use them as components within quantum technologies, for instance as light sources for quantum communication systems. Together, this breadth of prospective applications at the interface of quantum and biological science suggests that quantum physics will play an important role in stimulating future biotechnological advances. This review aims to provide an overview of this emerging field of quantum biotechnology, introducing current capabilities, future prospects, and potential areas of impact. The review is written to be accessible to the non-expert and focuses on the four key areas of quantum-enabled sensing, quantum-enabled imaging, quantum biomolecular control, and quantum effects in biology.
