Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ denote a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph with diameter $D\geq 1$. For a vertex $x$ of $\Gamma$ the corresponding subconstituent algebra $T=T(x)$ is generated by the adjacency matrix $A$ of $\Gamma$ and the dual adjacency matrix $A^*=A^*(x)$ of $\Gamma$ with respect to $x$. We introduce a $T$-module $\mathcal N = \mathcal N(x)$ called the nucleus of $\Gamma$ with respect to $x$. We describe $\mathcal N$ from various points of view. We show that all the irreducible $T$-submodules of $\mathcal N$ are thin. Under the assumption that $\Gamma$ is a nonbipartite dual polar graph, we give an explicit basis for $\mathcal N$ and the action of $A, A^*$ on this basis. The basis is in bijection with the set of elements for the projective geometry $L_D(q)$, where $GF(q)$ is the finite field used to define $\Gamma$.

The Norton-balanced condition for $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ denote a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph, with vertex set $X$ and diameter $D\geq 3$. The standard module $V$ has a basis $\lbrace {\hat x} \vert x \in X\rbrace$, where ${\hat x}$ denotes column $x$ of the identity matrix $I \in {\rm Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$. Let $E$ denote a $Q$-polynomial primitive idempotent of $\Gamma$. The eigenspace $EV$ is spanned by the vectors $\lbrace E {\hat x} \vert x \in X\rbrace$. It was previously known that these vectors satisfy a condition called the balanced set condition. In this paper, we introduce a variation on the balanced set condition called the Norton-balanced condition. The Norton-balanced condition involves the Norton algebra product on $EV$. We define $\Gamma$ to be Norton-balanced whenever $\Gamma$ has a $Q$-polynomial primitive idempotent $E$ such that the set $\lbrace E {\hat x} \vert x \in X\rbrace$ is Norton-balanced. We show that $\Gamma$ is Norton-balanced in the following cases: (i) $\Gamma$ is bipartite; (ii) $\Gamma$ is almost bipartite; (iii) $\Gamma$ is dual-bipartite; (iv) $\Gamma$ is almost dual-bipartite; (v) $\Gamma$ is tight; (vi) $\Gamma$ is a Hamming graph; (vii) $\Gamma$ is a Johnson graph; (viii) $\Gamma$ is the Grassmann graph $J_q(2D,D)$; (ix) $\Gamma$ is a halved bipartite dual-polar graph; (x) $\Gamma$ is a halved Hemmeter graph; (xi) $\Gamma$ is a halved hypercube; (xii) $\Gamma$ is a folded-half hypercube; (xiii) $\Gamma$ has $q$-Racah type and affords a spin model. Some theoretical results about the Norton-balanced condition are obtained, and some open problems are given.

Norton algebras of the Hamming Graphs via linear characters

Abstract:The Norton product is defined on each eigenspace of a distance regular graph by the orthogonal projection of the entry-wise product. The resulting algebra, known as the Norton algebra, is a commutative nonassociative algebra that is useful in group theory due to its interesting automorphism group. We provide a formula for the Norton product on each eigenspace of a Hamming graph using linear characters. We construct a large subgroup of automorphisms of the Norton algebra of a Hamming graph and completely describe the automorphism group in some cases. We also show that the Norton product on each eigenspace of a Hamming graph is as nonassociative as possible, except for some special cases in which it is either associative or equally as nonassociative as the so-called double minus operation previously studied by the author, Mickey, and Xu. Our results restrict to the hypercubes and extend to the halved and/or folded cubes, the bilinear forms graphs, and more generally, all Cayley graphs of finite abelian groups.

Abstract:We study a relationship between $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs and the double affine Hecke algebra of type $(C^{\vee}_1,C_1)$. Let $\Gamma$ denote a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph with vertex set $X$. We assume that $\Gamma$ has $q$-Racah type and contains a Delsarte clique $C$. Fix a vertex $x \in C$. We partition $X$ according to the path-length distance to both $x$ and $C$. This is an equitable partition. For each cell in this partition, consider the corresponding characteristic vector. These characteristic vectors form a basis for a $\mathbb{C}$-vector space ${\bf W}$. The universal double affine Hecke algebra of type $(C^{\vee}_1,C_1)$ is the $\mathbb{C}$-algebra $\hat{H}_q$ defined by generators $\{t^{\pm1}_n\}^3_{n=0}$ and relations (i) $t_nt_n^{-1}=t_n^{-1}t_n=1$; (ii) $t_n+t_n^{-1}$ is central; (iii) $t_0t_1t_2t_3 = q^{-1/2}$. In this paper, we display an $\hat{H}_q$-module structure for ${\bf W}$. For this module and up to affine transformation, (i) $t_0t_1+(t_0t_1)^{-1}$ acts as the adjacency matrix of $\Gamma$; (ii) $t_3t_0+(t_3t_0)^{-1}$ acts as the dual adjacency matrix of $\Gamma$ with respect to $C$; (iii) $t_1t_2+(t_1t_2)^{-1}$ acts as the dual adjacency matrix of $\Gamma$ with respect to $x$. To obtain our results we use the theory of Leonard systems.

Abstract:The goal of this article is to display a $Q$-polynomial structure for the Attenuated Space poset $\mathcal A_q(N,M)$. The poset $\mathcal A_q(N,M)$ is briefly described as follows. Start with an $(N+M)$-dimensional vector space $H$ over a finite field with $q$ elements. Fix an $M$-dimensional subspace $h$ of $H$. The vertex set $X$ of $\mathcal A_q(N,M)$ consists of the subspaces of $H$ that have zero intersection with $h$. The partial order on $X$ is the inclusion relation. The $Q$-polynomial structure involves two matrices $A, A^* \in {\rm Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$ with the following entries. For $y, z \in X$ the matrix $A$ has $(y,z)$-entry $1$ (if $y$ covers $z$); $q^{{\rm dim}\,y}$ (if $z$ covers $y$); and 0 (if neither of $y,z$ covers the other). The matrix $A^*$ is diagonal, with $(y,y)$-entry $q^{-{\rm dim}\,y}$ for all $y\in X$. By construction, $A^*$ has $N+1$ eigenspaces. By construction, $A$ acts on these eigenspaces in a (block) tridiagonal fashion. We show that $A$ is diagonalizable, with $2N+1$ eigenspaces. We show that $A^*$ acts on these eigenspaces in a (block) tridiagonal fashion. Using this action, we show that $A$ is $Q$-polynomial. We show that $A, A^*$ satisfy a pair of relations called the tridiagonal relations. We consider the subalgebra $T$ of ${\rm Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$ generated by $A, A^*$. We show that $A,A^*$ act on each irreducible $T$-module as a Leonard pair.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ denote a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph with diameter at least three and standard module $V$. We introduce two direct sum decompositions of $V$. We call these the displacement decomposition for $\Gamma$ and the split decomposition for $\Gamma$. We describe how these decompositions are related.

Abstract:In 2023 we obtained a $Q$-polynomial structure for the projective geometry $L_N(q)$. In the present paper, we display a more general $Q$-polynomial structure for $L_N(q)$. Our new $Q$-polynomial structure is defined using a free parameter $\varphi$ that takes any positive real value. For $\varphi=1$ we recover the original $Q$-polynomial structure. We interpret the new $Q$-polynomial structure using the quantum group $U_{q^{1/2}}(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ in the equitable presentation. We use the new $Q$-polynomial structure to obtain analogs of the four split decompositions that appear in the theory of $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs.

The $q$-Onsager Algebra and the Quantum Torus

Abstract:The $q$-Onsager algebra, denoted $O_q$, is defined by two generators $W_0, W_1$ and two relations called the $q$-Dolan-Grady relations. Recently, Terwilliger introduced some elements of $O_q$, said to be alternating. These elements are denoted $\{{W}_{-k}\}_{k=0}^{\infty}, \{{W}_{k+1}\}_{k=0}^{\infty}, \{{G}_{k+1}\}_{k=0}^{\infty}, \{\tilde{G}_{k+1}\}_{k=0}^{\infty}$. The alternating elements of $O_q$ are defined recursively. By construction, they are polynomials in $W_0$ and $W_1$. It is currently unknown how to express these polynomials in closed form. In this paper, we consider an algebra $T_q$, called the quantum torus. We present a basis for $T_q$ and define an algebra homomorphism $p: O_q \mapsto T_q$. In our main result, we express the $p$-images of the alternating elements of $O_q$ in the basis for $T_q$. These expressions are in a closed form that we find attractive.

On the $Q$-polynomial property of the full bipartite graph of a Hamming graph

Abstract:The $Q$-polynomial property is an algebraic property of distance-regular graphs, that was introduced by Delsarte in his study of coding theory. Many distance-regular graphs admit the $Q$-polynomial property. Only recently the $Q$-polynomial property has been generalized to graphs that are not necessarily distance-regular. In [ J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 205:105872, 2024 ], it was shown that graphs arising from the Hasse diagrams of the so-called attenuated space posets are $Q$-polynomial. These posets could be viewed as $q$-analogs of the Hamming posets, which were not studied in [ J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 205:105872, 2024 ]. The main goal of this paper is to fill this gap by showing that the graphs arising from the Hasse diagrams of the Hamming posets are $Q$-polynomial.

Abstract:Using Blanchfield pairings, we show that two Alexander polynomials cannot be realized by a pair of matrices with Gordian distance one if a corresponding quadratic equation does not have an integer solution. We also give an example of how our results help in calculating the Gordian distances, algebraic Gordian distances and polynomial distances.

Assume that there exists a $3$-clique $x,y,z$ such that $E\hat{x},E\hat{y},E\hat{z}$ are linearly dependent. In this paper, we classify all the $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs $\Gamma$ with the above property. We describe these graphs from multiple points of view.

Abstract:Two sets of mutually commuting $q-$difference operators $x_i$ and $y_j$, $i,j=1, ...,N$ such that $x_i$ and $y_i$ generate a homomorphic image of the $q-$Onsager algebra for each $i$ are introduced. The common polynomial eigenfunctions of each set are found to be entangled product of elementary Pochhammer functions in $N$ variables and $N+3$ parameters. Under certain conditions on the parameters, they form two `dual' bases of polynomials in $N$ variables. The action of each operator with respect to its dual basis is block tridiagonal. The overlap coefficients between the two dual bases are expressed as entangled products of $q-$Racah polynomials and satisfy an orthogonality relation. The overlap coefficients between either one of these bases and the multivariable monomial basis are also considered. One obtains in this case entangled products of dual $q-$Krawtchouk polynomials. Finally, the `split' basis in which the two families of operators act as block bidiagonal matrices is also provided.

On the distance spectrum of the Kronecker product of distance regular graphs

Abstract:Consider two simple graphs, G1 and G2, with their respective vertex sets V(G1) and V(G2). The Kronecker product forms a new graph with a vertex set V(G1) X V(G2). In this new graph, two vertices, (x, y) and (u, v), are adjacent if and only if xu is an edge in G1 and yv is an edge in G2. While the adjacency spectrum of this product is known, the distance spectrum remains unexplored. This article determines the distance spectrum of the Kronecker product for a few families of distance regular graphs. We find the exact polynomial, which expresses the distance matrix D as a polynomial of the adjacency matrix, for two distance regular graphs, Johnson and Hamming graphs. Additionally, we present families of distance integral graphs, shedding light on a previously posted open problem given by Indulal and Balakrishnan in (AKCE International Journal of Graphs and Combinatorics, 13(3); 230 to 234, 2016).

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected graph on $n$ vertices with adjacency matrix $A_G$. Associated to $G$ is a polynomial $d_G(x_1,\dots, x_n)$ of degree $n$ in $n$ variables, obtained as the determinant of the matrix $M_G(x_1,\dots,x_n)$, where $M_G={\rm Diag}(x_1,\dots,x_n)-A_G$. We investigate in this article the set $V_{d_G}(r)$ of non-negative values taken by this polynomial when $x_1, \dots, x_n \geq r \geq 1$. We show that $V_{d_G}(1) = {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$. We show that for a large class of graphs one also has $V_{d_G}(2) = {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$. When $V_{d_G}(2) \neq {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$, we show that for many graphs $V_{d_G}(2) $ is dense in $ {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$. We give numerical evidence that in many cases, the complement of $V_{d_G}(2) $ in $ {\mathbb Z}_{\geq 0}$ might in fact be finite. As a byproduct of our results, we show that every graph can be endowed with an arithmetical structure whose associated group is trivial.

Abstract:In a recent article "Projective geometries, $Q$-polynomial structures, and quantum groups" Terwilliger (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2407.14964" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2407.14964">arXiv:2407.14964</a>) defined a certain weighted adjacency matrix, depending on a free (positive real) parameter, associated with the projective geometry, and showed (among many other results) that it is diagonalizable, with the eigenvalues and their multiplicities explicitly written down, and that it satisfies the $Q$-polynomial property (with respect to the zero subspace). In this note we (i) Write down an explicit eigenbasis for this matrix. (ii) Evaluate the adjacency matrix-eigenvector products, yielding a new proof for the eigenvalues and their multiplicities. (iii) Evaluate the dual adjacency matrix-eigenvector products and directly show that the action of the dual adjacency matrix on the eigenspaces of the adjacency matrix is block-tridiagonal, yielding a new proof of the $Q$-polynomial property.

Abstract:We prove a relative version over $\mathbb{Q}$ of Nash-Tognoli theorem, that is: Let $M$ be a compact smooth manifold with closed smooth submanifolds $M_1,\dots,M_\ell$ in general position, then there exists a nonsingular real algebraic set $M'\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ with nonsingular algebraic subsets $M_1',\dots,M_\ell'$ and a diffeomorphism $h:M\to M'$ such that $h(M_i)=M_i'$ for all $i=1,\dots,\ell$ such that $M',M_1',\dots,M_\ell'$ are described, both globally and locally, by polynomial equations with rational coefficients. In addition, if $M,M_1,\dots,M_\ell$ are nonsingular algebraic sets, then we prove the diffeomorphism $h:M\to M'$ can be chosen semialgebraic and the result can be extended to the noncompact case. In the proof we describe also the $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-homological cycles of real embedded Grassmannian manifolds by nonsingular algebraic representatives over $\mathbb{Q}$ via the Bott-Samelson resolution of Schubert varieties.

Abstract:In this paper, we study in the context of quantum vertex algebras a certain Clifford-like algebra introduced by Jing and Nie. We establish bases of PBW type and classify its $\mathbb N$-graded irreducible modules by using a notion of Verma module. On the other hand, we introduce a new algebra, a twin of the original algebra. Using this new algebra we construct a quantum vertex algebra and we associate $\mathbb N$-graded modules for Jing-Nie's Clifford-like algebra with $\phi$-coordinated modules for the quantum vertex algebra. We also show that the adjoint module for the quantum vertex algebra is irreducible.

Abstract:For any positive definite rational quadratic form $q$ of $n$ variables let $G(\mathbb{Q}^n, q)$ denote the graph with vertices $\mathbb{Q}^n$ and $x, y \in \mathbb{Q}^n$ connected iff $q(x - y) = 1$. This notion generalises standard Euclidean distance graphs. In this article we study these graphs and show how to find the exact value of clique number of the $G(\mathbb{Q}^n, q)$. We also prove rational analogue of the Beckman--Quarles theorem that any unit-preserving mapping of $\mathbb{Q}^n$ is an isometry.

Abstract:In this paper, we associate the quantum toroidal algebra $\mathcal{E}_N$ of type $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ with quantum vertex algebra through equivariant $\phi$-coordinated quasi modules. More precisely, for every $\ell\in \mathbb{C}$, by deforming the universal affine vertex algebra of $\mathfrak{sl}_\infty$, we construct an $\hbar$-adic quantum $\Z$-vertex algebra $V_{\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_{\infty},\hbar}(\ell,0)$. Then we prove that the category of restricted $\mathcal{E}_N$-modules of level $\ell$ is canonically isomorphic to that of equivariant $\phi$-coordinated quasi $V_{\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_{\infty},\hbar}(\ell,0)$-modules.

Abstract:Distance-regular graphs are a key concept in Algebraic Combinatorics and have given rise to several generalizations, such as association schemes. Motivated by spectral and other algebraic characterizations of distance-regular graphs, we study `almost distance-regular graphs'. We use this name informally for graphs that share some regularity properties that are related to distance in the graph. For example, a known characterization of a distance-regular graph is the invariance of the number of walks of given length between vertices at a given distance, while a graph is called walk-regular if the number of closed walks of given length rooted at any given vertex is a constant. One of the concepts studied here is a generalization of both distance-regularity and walk-regularity called $m$-walk-regularity. Another studied concept is that of $m$-partial distance-regularity or, informally, distance-regularity up to distance $m$. Using eigenvalues of graphs and the predistance polynomials, we discuss and relate these and other concepts of almost distance-regularity, such as their common generalization of $(\ell,m)$-walk-regularity. We introduce the concepts of punctual distance-regularity and punctual walk-regularity as a fundament upon which almost distance-regular graphs are built. We provide examples that are mostly taken from the Foster census, a collection of symmetric cubic graphs. Two problems are posed that are related to the question of when almost distance-regular becomes whole distance-regular. We also give several characterizations of punctually distance-regular graphs that are generalizations of the spectral excess theorem.
