Abstract:We study collective self-organization of weakly magnetic active suspensions in a uniform external field by analyzing a mesoscopic continuum model that we have recently developed. Our model is based on a Smoluchowski equation for a particle probability density function in an alignment field coupled to a mean-field description of the flow arising from the activity and the alignment torque. Performing linear stability analysis of the Smoluchowski equation and the resulting orientational moment equations combined with non-linear 3D simulations, we provide a comprehensive picture of instability patterns as a function of strengths of activity and magnetic field. For sufficiently high activity and moderate magnetic field strengths, the competition between the activity-induced flow and external magnetic torque renders a homogeneous polar steady state unstable. As a result, four distinct dynamical patterns of collective motion emerge. The instability patterns for pushers include traveling bands governed by bend-twist instabilities and dynamical aggregates. For pullers, finite-sized and system spanning pillar-like concentrated regions predominated by splay deformations emerge which migrate in the field direction. Notably, at very strong magnetic fields, we observe a reentrant hydrodynamic stability of the polar steady state.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to study the collective self - organization phenomenon of weakly magnetically active suspensions in a uniform external magnetic field. Specifically, the author developed a mesoscopic continuous model for analyzing the particle probability density function in the alignment field and combined it with the mean - field description of the flow caused by activity and alignment torques. By performing a linear stability analysis of the Smoluchowski equation and its derived directional moment equations, as well as three - dimensional nonlinear simulations, the author provides a comprehensive picture of the unstable modes as a function of activity intensity and magnetic field intensity. The core problem of the paper is to explore how the competition between the activity - induced flow and the external magnetic field torque makes the uniform polar steady state unstable under sufficiently high activity and moderate magnetic field intensity. The results show that four different collective motion dynamic modes are thus generated: 1. **Pushers**: - Traveling bands resulting from bend - twist instabilities. - Dynamical aggregates. 2. **Pullers**: - Pillar - like concentrated regions of finite size and system - spanning, which are predominated by splay deformations and migrate along the direction of the magnetic field. It is worth noting that in a very strong magnetic field, the reentrant hydrodynamic stability of the polar steady state is observed, which is a sign of the competition between the alignment torque and the hydrodynamic torque. In conclusion, through theoretical modeling and numerical simulation, this paper deeply explores the collective behavior of active matter under the action of an external magnetic field, reveals the complex dynamic modes that may occur under different conditions, and provides new insights into the self - organization of active matter.
