Abstract:The reconstruction of water wave elevation from bottom pressure measurements is an important issue for coastal applications, but corresponds to a difficult mathematical problem. In this paper we present the derivation of a method which allows the elevation reconstruction of water waves in intermediate and shallow waters. From comparisons with numerical Euler solutions and wave-tank experiments we show that our nonlinear method provides much better results of the surface elevation reconstruction compared to the linear transfer function approach commonly used in coastal applications. More specifically, our methodaccurately reproduces the peaked and skewed shape of nonlinear wave fields. Therefore, it is particularly relevant for applications on extreme waves and wave-induced sediment transport.

Steady water-waves with arbitrary surface-pressure: Their recovery from bottom-pressure measurements

Abstract:Equations relating the pressure at a horizontal seabed, the free-surface profile and the surface-pressure are derived for two-dimensional irrotational steady water waves with arbitrary pressure at the free surface. Special cases include gravity, capillary, flexural and wind waves. Without approximations, we show that the free-surface recovery from the bottom-pressure requires the resolution of only one first-order ordinary differential equation independent of the surface-pressure, thus providing a new general recovery method valid for a broad class of water waves. Another equation provides an explicit expression for the surface-pressure as a function of the bottom-pressure and of the free-surface. Thus, if unknown, the surface-pressure can be also recovered if one extra measurement is available. This new recovery procedure is illustrated analytically for the linear approximation of a flexural-capillary-gravity wave, and numerically for fully nonlinear capillary-gravity waves.

Optimal reconstruction of water-waves from noisy pressure measurements at the seabed

Abstract:We consider the problem of recovering the surface wave profile from noisy bottom pressure measurements with (\textit{a priori} unknown) arbitrary pressure at the surface. Without noise, the direct approach developed in \cite{clamond2023steady} provides an effective way to recover the sea surface. However, the assumption of analyticity for the measurement renders this method inefficient in the presence of noise. Therefore, we introduce an optimisation procedure based on the minimisation of a distance between a recovered bottom pressure and its measurement. Such method proves to be well-designed to handle perturbed signals. We illustrate the effectiveness of this approach in the recovery of gravity-capillary waves from unfiltered noisy data.

Abstract:We derive equations relating the pressure at a flat seabed and the free-surface profile for steady gravity waves with constant vorticity. The resulting set of nonlinear equations enables the recovery of the free surface from pressure measurements at the bed. Furthermore, the flow vorticity (unknown a priori ) is determined solely from the bottom pressure as part of the recovery method. This approach is applicable even in the presence of stagnation points and its efficiency is illustrated via numerical examples.

Abstract:A novel boundary integral approach for the recovery of overhanging (or not) rotational (or not) water waves from pressure measurements at the bottom is presented. The method is based on the Cauchy integral formula and on an Eulerian--Lagrangian formalism to accommodate overturning free surfaces. This approach eliminates the need to introduce {\em a priori} a special basis of functions, providing thus a general means of fitting the pressure data and, consequently, recovering the free surface. The effectiveness and accuracy of the method are demonstrated through numerical examples.

Abstract:A new method is proposed to recover the water-wave surface elevation from pressure data obtained at the bottom of the fluid. The new method requires the numerical solution of a nonlocal nonlinear equation relating the pressure and the surface elevation which is obtained from the Euler formulation of the water-wave problem without approximation. From this new equation, a variety of different asymptotic formulas are derived. The nonlocal equation and the asymptotic formulas are compared with both numerical data and physical experiments. The solvability properties of the nonlocal equation are rigorously analyzed using the Implicit Function Theorem.

Abstract:As a non-destructive and convenient method, Scholte waves inversion method has been widely used in various engineering applications. However, previous inversion methods treated the seabed sediments as a fully elastic medium, and ignored the porous nature of the sediment. In this paper, a state-of-art inversion model of shear wave velocity, which takes into account the porous property of the seabed, is established based on Bloch's theorems and Biot's theory. Then, the validity of the results is established and the influences of porosity and permeability coefficient of seabed soil are discussed in detail. Finally, an inversion platform using a Python environment is built, and Differential Evolution algorithm and Bayesian approach are employed to obtain the shear velocity profile of the seafloor in the northern North Sea. The calculated results based on the proposed model are highly consistent with the in-situ measurements in the shallow seabed compared to those calculated by the elastic model. This suggests that the influence of porous medium properties on shear wave velocity should be carefully considered for more accurate marine geological surveys.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the dynamic pressure in a deep-water extreme Stokes wave. While the presence of stagnation points introduces a number of mathematical complications, maximum principles are applied to analyse the dynamic pressure in the fluid body by means of an excision process. It is shown that the dynamic pressure attains its maximum value beneath the wave crest and its minimum beneath the wave trough, while it decreases in moving away from the crest line along any streamline.

Abstract:A plane strain analysis based on the generalized Biot's equation is utilized to investigate the wave-induced response of a poro-elastic seabed with variable shear modulus. By employing integral transform and Frobenius methods, the transient and steady solutions for the wave-induced pore water pressure, effective stresses and displacements are analytically derived in detail. Verification is available through the reduction to the simple case of homogeneous seabed. The numerical results indicate that the inclusion of variable shear modulus significantly affects the wave-induced seabed response.

Abstract:Surface gravity waves in coastal waters are broadband and multi-directional, whose quadratic properties are of considerable engineering and scientific interest. Based on a Stokes expansion and an envelope-type framework, a new semi-analytical approach is proposed in this paper for the description of weakly nonlinear broadband and multi-directional surface waves. This approach proposes solving for the second-order wave fields through the separation of harmonics, by using a Fast Fourier transform and a time integration method. Different from some other methods, e.g., the High-Order Spectral method, the approach introduces a spectral shift for the superharmonic waves, leading to computationally efficient and accurate spectral predictions. The approach has been validated through comparisons with the results based on Dalzell ["A note on finite depth second-order wave–wave interactions," Appl. Ocean Res. 21, 105–111 (1999)]. An envelope-type framework for the fast prediction of particle trajectories and Stokes drifts up to the second order in wave steepness is also derived in this paper, based on the semi-analytical approach. This paper shows that the results based on a narrowband assumption lead to underestimates of Stokes drift velocities driven by broadband unidirectional focused wave groups. The cases, examined for particle trajectories below broadband unidirectional focused wave groups, show that a larger bandwidth and water depth can enhance the differences in the net mean horizontal displacement of particles at water surface relative to these at seabed.

Abstract:Recent studies of water waves propagating over sloping seabeds have shown that sudden transitions from deeper to shallower depths can produce significant increases in the skewness and kurtosis of the free surface elevation and hence in the probability of rogue wave occurrence. Gramstad et al. (Phys. Fluids 25 (12): 122103, 2013) have shown that the key physics underlying these increases can be captured by a weakly dispersive and weakly nonlinear Boussinesq-type model. In the present paper, a numerical model based on an alternative Boussinesq-type formulation is used to repeat these earlier simulations. Although qualitative agreement is achieved, the present model is found to be unable to reproduce accurately the findings of the earlier study. Model parameter tests are then used to demonstrate that the present Boussinesq-type formulation is not well-suited to modelling the propagation of waves over sudden depth transitions. The present study nonetheless provides useful insight into the complexity encountered when modelling this type of problem and outlines a number of promising avenues for further research.

Abstract:Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is a photonics technology converting seafloor telecommunications and optical fiber cables into dense arrays of strain sensors, allowing to monitor various oceanic physical processes. Yet, several applications are hindered by the limited knowledge of the transfer function between geophysical variables and DAS measurements. This study investigates the quantitative relationship between surface gravity DAS‐recorded wave‐generated strain signals along the seafloor and the pressure at a colocated sensor. A remarkable linear correlation is found over various sea conditions allowing us to reliably determine significant wave heights from DAS data. Utilizing linear wave potential theory, we derive an analytical transfer function linking cable deformation and wave kinematic parameters. This transfer function provides a first quantification of the effects related to surface gravity waves and fiber responses. Our results validate DAS's potential for real‐time reconstruction of the surface gravity wave spectrum over extended coastal areas. It also enables the estimation of waves hydraulic parameters at depth without the need from offshore deployments.

Extreme Waves in Crossing Sea States

Abstract:The evolution of crossing sea states and the emergence of rogue waves in such systems are studied via numerical simulations performed using a higher order spectral (HOS) method to solve the free surface Euler equations with a flat bottom. Two classes of crossing sea states are analyzed: one using directional spectra from the Draupner wave crossing at different angles, another considering a Draupner-like spectra crossed with a narrowband JONSWAP state to model spectral growth between wind sea and swell. These two classes of crossing sea states are constructed using the spectral output of a WAVEWATCH III hindcast on the Draupner rogue wave event. We measure ensemble statistical moments as functions of time, finding that although the crossing angle influences the statistical evolution to some degree, there are no significant third-order effects present. Additionally, we pay particular attention to the mean sea level measured beneath extreme crest heights, the elevation of which (set up or set down) is shown to be related to the spectral content in the low wavenumber region of the corresponding spectrum.

Abstract:Recent experimental and numerical studies of surface gravity waves propagating over a sloping bottom have shown that an increase in the probability of extreme waves can be triggered by depth variations in sufficiently shallow waters. This phenomenon is studied here by means of a boundary element method with fast multipole acceleration to solve the fully nonlinear water wave equations. We focus on the case of a random, unidirectional wave field with prescribed statistical properties propagating over a submerged slope and consider different depth variations, including a step. Validation is provided by comparing with experiments by Trulsen, Zeng, and Gramstad [Phys. Fluids 24, 097101 (2012)]. Strongly non-Gaussian statistics are observed in a region localized near the depth transition, beyond which the statistics settle rapidly to the steady statistical state of finite-depth random wave fields. Using a harmonic separation technique, we show that the second-order terms are responsible for the change in the statistical properties near the depth transition. We explore in detail the effects of peak frequency, significant wave height, the inclination of the slope, and the depth of the shallower water side on the kurtosis, skewness, and the excess probability of the crest height, including their spatial distributions.

Abstract:We report an experimental study of the reconstruction of real-ocean rogue waves in a laboratory environment using the time reversal (TR) methodology (Chabchoub & Fink, Phys. Rev. Lett. , vol. 112, 2014, 124101). Three different rogue wave measurements are used to validate the TR approach. The generation and accurate control of target free-surface profiles in a unidirectional wave flume using standard techniques, such as the New Wave theory (Tromans, Anaturk & Hagemeier, Proceedings of the First International Offshore and Polar Engineering Conference , 1991, pp. 64–71), are fairly challenging, especially for very steep and, thus, highly nonlinear extreme waves. The TR method, making use of the time reversibility of wave propagation and symmetry of the governing hydrodynamic equations of motion, leads to a simple two-step experimental procedure, the accuracy of which is investigated in this paper. The use of the TR procedure requires the appropriate Froude scaling in designing the model-scale experiments. The present study represents the first validation of the TR method to realistic irregular seas containing rogue waves. Three extreme wave profiles are tested to assess the applicability of the TR scheme to different wave configurations taking into account variable characteristics. This includes the famed New Year wave. The accuracy of the TR method is demonstrated with varying wave steepness values and propagation distances of the reverse reconstruction. It is demonstrated that the unidirectional TR reconstruction is robust, even in the presence of unavoidable wave breaking, known to be an irreversible process within the framework of any wave hydrodynamic evolution equation, and independently of complex environmental conditions or focusing mechanism at play in the sea.

Abstract:Observations from a lander fixed to the seafloor over the continental shelf in 124 m of water provide highly resolved velocity measurements through nonlinear internal waves of elevation. From these measurements we determine, for the first time, the non-hydrostatic pressure disturbance ($p_{nh}$) in nonlinear internal waves. For near-bottom waves of elevation ranging in amplitude, $a$, from 12 to 33 m, the value of $p_{nh}$ evaluated at the seafloor changes sign from $\,{>}\,0$ to $\,{<}\,0$ and back in accordance with weakly nonlinear theory; peak values of $\vert p_{nh}\vert$ range from 25 to 90 N m$^{-2}$. The external hydrostatic pressure disturbance due to the surface displacement ($\eta_H$) is inferred from horizontal accelerations. For elevation waves, $\eta_H\,{<}\,0$; peak values range from 0.1 to 9 mm (1 to 90 N m$^{-2}$). The internal hydrostatic pressure perturbation ($p_{Wh}$), caused by isopycnal displacement, is inferred from measured streamlines and an ambient density profile. Its value at the seafloor is $\,{>}\,0$ for elevation waves; peak values range from 100 to 300 N m$^{-2}$. $\vert\eta_H\vert$ and seafloor values of $\vert p_{nh}\vert$, $p_{Wh}$ all increase monotonically with $a$. Since $\vert p_{nh}\vert$ and $p_{Wh}$ increase at roughly the same rate with $a$, no clear trend arises in the degree to which waves become more or less non-hydrostatic as $a$ changes. A distinct bottom pressure signature is determined for bottom-trapped nonlinear waves of elevation, a wave train consisting of a sequence of positive pressure perturbations (dominated by $p_{Wh}$). By inference, a train of surface-trapped nonlinear internal waves of depression will consist of a sequence of negative pressure perturbations. A result of this analysis is that significant properties of the waves can be discerned from a simple adequately resolved bottom pressure measurement.

Wave (from) Polarized Light Learning (WPLL) method: high resolution spatio-temporal measurements of water surface waves in laboratory setups

Abstract:Effective spatio-temporal measurements of water surface elevation (water waves) in laboratory experiments are crucial for scientific and engineering research. Existing techniques are often cumbersome, computationally heavy and generally suffer from limitations in wavenumber/frequency response. To address these challenges, we propose Wave (from) Polarized Light Learning (WPLL), a learning based remote sensing method for laboratory implementation, capable of inferring surface elevation and slope maps in high resolution. The method uses the polarization properties of light reflected from the water surface. The WPLL uses a deep neural network (DNN) model that approximates the water surface slopes from the polarized light intensities. Once trained on simple monochromatic wave trains, the WPLL is capable of producing high-resolution and accurate 2D reconstruction of the water surface slopes and elevation in a variety of irregular wave fields. The method's robustness is demonstrated by showcasing its high wavenumber/frequency response, its ability to reconstruct wave fields propagating at arbitrary angles relative to the camera optical axis, and its computational efficiency. This developed methodology is an accurate and cost-effective near-real time remote sensing tool for laboratory water surface waves measurements, setting the path for upscaling to open sea application for research, monitoring, and short-time forecasting.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new stereo-video-based free-surface reconstruction system developed for wave-tank experiments. The originality of the proposed approach relies on the use of short water waves and an adapted lighting system to create a fine texture suitable for the cross-correlation of the stereo image pairs. The feasibility of the approach is demonstrated experimentally in a wave flume. The accuracy of the stereo-video free-surface reconstruction method is assessed through comparisons with measurements performed with a servo-controlled wave gauge. The reconstruction of the free surface at rest and during different regular (periodic) long-crested wave experiments are considered for this purpose. The results demonstrate that, with a suitable free-surface roughness, the accuracy of the stereo-system can be similar to the accuracy of the wave gauge. The accuracy, the simplicity and the flexibility of the approach, which does not necessitate any seeding or dying of the water, nor the use of a laser light source, make it a promising measurement technique for water-wave experiments.

Abstract:The objective is to study the combined effect of an incident wave, a surface pressure excess and a finite number of submerged obstacles, in the phenomenon of power transfer to an infinite fluid layer of finite depth. The incident wave and the surface pressure excess have the same harmonic time dependence, a fact that allows to eliminate time altogether and consider only steady-state solutions. The surface pressure excess simulates the effect of winds blowing above the water surface in oceans. The technique used in a first part of the paper relying upon the use of finite Fourier transform and separation of variables is extended here to this end. The method allows to separate local perturbations from progressive or standing wave. Our formulae yield the exact solution in closed form in the absence of obstacles, and provide a clearer insight into the flow properties, as compared to previous investigations. Applications are given for discontinuous surface pressure functions. We put in evidence solutions with no outgoing waves, for which the energy transmitted by the surface pressure is exhausted in generating a standing wave, together with local perturbations. Two numerical applications without/with obstacles, for a parabolic surface pressure profile, allow to assess the energy transfer from the pressure-obstacles system to the fluid. The results may be of interest in the field of oscillating water columns and, generally, water power converting technology.
