Abstract:We study the evaporation-induced stratification of a mixture of short and long polymer chains in a drying droplet using molecular simulations. We systematically investigate the effects of hydrodynamic interactions (HI) on this process by comparing hybrid simulations accounting for HI between polymers through the multiparticle collision dynamics technique with free-draining Langevin dynamics simulations neglecting the same. We find that the dried supraparticle morphologies are homogeneous when HI are included but are stratified in core--shell structures (with the short polymers forming the shell) when HI are neglected. The simulation methodology unambiguously attributes this difference to the treatment of the solvent in the two models. We rationalize the presence (or absence) of stratification by measuring phenomenological multicomponent diffusion coefficients for the polymer mixtures. The diffusion coefficients show the importance of not only solvent backflow but also HI between polymers in controlling the dried supraparticle morphology.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the stratification phenomenon and its mechanism formed during the evaporation process of polymer mixtures of different lengths in dry droplets. Specifically, the author studied the stratification behavior of short - and long - chain polymer mixtures during the drying process through molecular simulations, especially examining the influence of hydrodynamic interactions (HI) on this process. There are two main objectives of the paper: 1. **Explore the stratification phenomenon of short - and long - chain polymer mixtures in dry droplets**: The author used two different simulation methods - one considering hydrodynamic interactions (+HI) and the other ignoring these interactions (-HI). Through these two methods, the author hopes to reveal the role of hydrodynamic interactions in the stratification phenomenon. 2. **Explain the mechanism of the stratification phenomenon**: The author explains the appearance or disappearance of the stratification phenomenon by measuring multi - component diffusion coefficients. These diffusion coefficients reflect the importance of solvent back - flow and hydrodynamic interactions in controlling the morphology of super - particles after drying. ### Main findings - **Differences in stratification phenomena**: When hydrodynamic interactions are considered, the morphology of super - particles after drying is uniform; while when hydrodynamic interactions are ignored, the mixture will form a core - shell structure, where short - chain polymers form the shell layer. - **Analysis of diffusion coefficients**: By measuring multi - component diffusion coefficients, the author found that solvent back - flow and hydrodynamic interactions are the key factors in controlling the morphology of super - particles after drying. ### Simulation methods - **Explicit solvent simulation**: Use the multi - particle collision dynamics (MPCD) technique to handle hydrodynamic interactions between polymers. - **Implicit solvent simulation**: Use free - draining Langevin dynamics (LD) simulations, ignoring hydrodynamic interactions. ### Conclusion Through detailed simulations and analyses, the paper emphasizes the important role of hydrodynamic interactions in the stratification phenomenon of polymer mixtures during the drying process and provides an important reference for future theoretical and computational models.
