Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of two quantum mechanical oscillator system-bath toy models obtained by truncating to zero spatial dimensions linearized gravity coupled to a massive scalar field and scalar QED. The scalar-gravity toy model maps onto the phase damped oscillator, while the scalar QED toy model approximately maps onto an oscillator system subject to two-photon damping. The toy models provide potentially useful insights into solving for open system quantum dynamics relevant to the full scalar QED and weak gravitational field systems, in particular operational probes of the decoherence for initial scalar field system superposition states.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to quantify the influence of the gravitational environment on the macroscopic mass/energy superposition state. Specifically, the authors studied the quantum - mechanical oscillator - system - environment toy models of the linearized gravity coupled with the scalar field under the condition of weak spacetime curvature. These models provide useful insights into the quantum dynamics of open systems, especially for the decoherence operation probe of the initial scalar - field - system superposition state. Through these studies, an upper limit that is in principle unavoidable can be set for the coherence time of the macroscopic superposition state, and directions can be indicated for further experiments to explore the role of gravity in enforcing macroscopic classicality.
It is mentioned in the paper that, normally, the quantum superposition states of macroscopic systems decohere rapidly under daily conditions due to interactions with the environment, such as factors like air molecules, photons and internal defects of the system. However, as an environmental factor that cannot be shielded, the influence of gravity on the quantum superposition state needs to be quantitatively understood. Although the predicted decoherence time caused by gravity may be much longer than the decoherence time in the daily electromagnetic environment, an in - depth understanding of this process helps to set the upper limit of the coherence time of the macroscopic superposition state and may guide future experiments to explore the role of gravity in achieving macroscopic classicality.
To study these problems, the paper proposes two zero - dimensional (0D) toy models, corresponding to the scalar - gravity system and the scalar quantum electrodynamics (QED) system respectively. These models simplify the coupling of the linearized gravity with the scalar field and the scalar QED system by truncating to zero spatial dimensions. Through these models, researchers can analyze more in - depth the dynamic behavior of the quantum system under the interaction with the environment, especially the decoherence process. This not only helps to understand the influence of gravity on the quantum system, but also provides a theoretical basis for future experimental design.
