Abstract:In 2004 Denmark introduced a compulsory integrated science course the most popular upper secondary study program. One of the nation-wide course aims are for students to "achieve knowledge about some of the central scientific issues and their social, ethical, and historical perspectives". This is to be done via collaboration between the subjects, and often involves physics and another scientific subject. The official teaching plans further state that mathematics must be used for analysing data. We use network analysis to study six different implementations of the course in terms of the structure of different kinds of teaching/learning activities. By creating networks maps of each lesson, we show that teaching/learning activities in the course seldom tends to address how sciences can work together to solve a problem, but rather stages each natural science as a distinct and separate activity with a distinct identity.
Mapping the Curricular Structure and Contents of Network Science Courses

Abstract:As network science has matured as an established field of research, there are already a number of courses on this topic developed and offered at various higher education institutions, often at postgraduate levels. In those courses, instructors adopted different approaches with different focus areas and curricular designs. We collected information about 30 existing network science courses from various online sources, and analyzed the contents of their syllabi or course schedules. The topics and their curricular sequences were extracted from the course syllabi/schedules and represented as a directed weighted graph, which we call the topic network. Community detection in the topic network revealed seven topic clusters, which matched reasonably with the concept list previously generated by students and educators through the Network Literacy initiative. The minimum spanning tree of the topic network revealed typical flows of curricular contents, starting with examples of networks, moving onto random networks and small-world networks, then branching off to various subtopics from there. These results illustrate the current state of consensus formation (including variations and disagreements) among the network science community on what should be taught about networks and how, which may also be informative for K--12 education and informal education.

Abstract:Our educational systems must prepare students for an increasingly interconnected future, and teachers require equipping with modern tools, such as network science, to achieve this. We held a Networks in Classroom Education (NiCE) workshop for a group of 21 K-12 teachers with various disciplinary backgrounds. The explicit aim of this was to introduce them to concepts in network science, show them how these concepts can be utilized in the classroom, and empower them to develop resources, in the form of lesson plans, for themselves and the wider community. Here we detail the nature of the workshop and present its outcomes - including an innovative set of publicly available lesson plans. We discuss the future for successful integration of network science in K-12 education, and the importance of inspiring and enabling our teachers.

Abstract:Quantum computing is a growing field at the intersection of physics and computer science. The goal of this article is to highlight a successfully trialled quantum computing course for high school students between the ages of 15 and 18 years old. This course was designed to bridge the gap between popular science articles and advanced undergraduate textbooks. Conceptual ideas in the text are reinforced with active learning techniques, such as interactive problem sets and simulation-based labs at various levels. The course is freely available for use and download under the Creative Commons “Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International” license.

Abstract:We present an overview of a "Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence" course that is part of a large online course platform for upper second level students. We take a novel approach to teaching fundamental AI concepts that does not require code, and assumes little prior knowledge including only basic mathematics. The design ethos is for students to gain an understanding of how algorithms can "learn". Many misconceptions exist about this term with respect to AI and can lead to confusion and more serious misconceptions, particularly for students who engage with AI-enabled tools regularly. This approach aims to provide insights into how AI actually works, to demystify and remove barriers to more advanced learning, and to emphasize the important roles of ethics and bias in AI. We took several steps to engage students, including videos narrated by a final-year second-level student (US 12th grade). We present design and logistics particulars on this course which is currently being taken by ~7,000 students in Ireland. We believe this will be of value to other educators and the wider community.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has emerged as a broad, exciting, yet ill-defined field of scientific research and technological innovation. There are important questions about the technology’s potential economic, social, and environmental implications. We discuss an undergraduate course on nanoscience and nanotechnology for students from a wide range of disciplines, including the natural and social sciences, the humanities, and engineering. The course explores these questions and the broader place of technology in contemporary societies. The course is built around active learning methods and seeks to develop the students’ critical thinking skills, written and verbal communication abilities, and general knowledge of nanoscience and nanoengineering concepts. Continuous assessment was used to gain information about the effectiveness of class discussions and enhancement of student understanding of the interaction between nanotechnology and society.

Abstract:Technologies are rapidly evolving in the life sciences and other STEM areas. Advanced hands-on practical courses are key for life-science researchers to stay ahead of the game. Although the Covid-19 pandemic propelled/accelerated the transformation in remote training opportunities, it is clear that training in molecular biology methodologies requires and greatly benefits from hands-on face-to-face courses. Here we present a novel 2-hub course format, with teaching of cutting-edge technologies simultaneously in Germany (EMBL Heidelberg) and India (BLiSC in Bangalore). The format combines active-based learning on a scientific case study with collaborative exercises and networking that foster scientific exchange. We describe the digital technologies utilised in course design and delivery, and the multi-layered planning phase. Analysis of the participant and trainer feedback questionnaires demonstrates the benefits and challenges of the 2-hub format and illustrates the success of the course. The concept allows us to broaden our reach, while reducing overall CO2 emission in comparison to a 1-hub course. We show that thanks to digital tools and collaboration of dedicated organisers, we can provide conceptual design and create sophisticated active-learner training opportunities with world-wide reach.

Abstract:We describe an eight-week summer Young Scientist in Training (YSIT) internship program involving middle and high school students. This program exposed students to current basic research in molecular genetics, while introducing or reinforcing principles of the scientific method and demonstrating the uses of mathematics and chemistry in biology. For the laboratory-based program, selected students from Baltimore City Schools working in groups of three were teamed with undergraduate research assistants at Morgan State University. Teams were assigned a project that was indirectly related to our laboratory research on the characterization of gene expression in Caenorhabditis elegans. At the end of the program, teams prepared posters detailing their accomplishments, and presented their findings to parents and faculty members during a mini-symposium. The posters were also submitted to the respective schools and the interns were offered a presentation of their research at local high school science fairs.

Abstract:This article discusses how to create an interactive virtual training program at the intersection of neuroscience, robotics, and computer science for high school students. A four-day microseminar, titled Swarming Powered by Neuroscience (SPN), was conducted virtually through a combination of presentations and interactive computer game simulations, delivered by subject matter experts in neuroscience, mathematics, multi-agent swarm robotics, and education. The objective of this research was to determine if taking an interdisciplinary approach to high school education would enhance the students learning experiences in fields such as neuroscience, robotics, or computer science. This study found an improvement in student engagement for neuroscience by 16.6%, while interest in robotics and computer science improved respectively by 2.7% and 1.8%. The curriculum materials, developed for the SPN microseminar, can be used by high school teachers to further evaluate interdisciplinary instructions across life and physical sciences and computer science.

Abstract:This study documents the impact of a summer camp series that introduces high school students to coding, data science, and deep learning. Hosted on-campus, the camps provide an immersive university experience, fostering technical skills, collaboration, and inspiration through interactions with mentors and faculty. Campers' experiences are documented through interviews and pre- and post-camp surveys. Key lessons include the importance of personalized feedback, diverse mentorship, and structured collaboration. Survey data reveals increased confidence in coding, with 68.6\% expressing interest in AI and data science careers. The camps also play a crucial role in addressing disparities in STEM education for underrepresented minorities. These findings underscore the value of such initiatives in shaping future technology education and promoting diversity in STEM fields.

Abstract:This short article presents a summary of the NetSciEd (Network Science and Education) initiative that aims to address the need for curricula, resources, accessible materials, and tools for introducing K-12 students and the general public to the concept of networks, a crucial framework in understanding complexity. NetSciEd activities include (1) the NetSci High educational outreach program (since 2010), which connects high school students and their teachers with regional university research labs and provides them with the opportunity to work on network science research projects; (2) the NetSciEd symposium series (since 2012), which brings network science researchers and educators together to discuss how network science can help and be integrated into formal and informal education; and (3) the Network Literacy: Essential Concepts and Core Ideas booklet (since 2014), which was created collaboratively and subsequently translated into 18 languages by an extensive group of network science researchers and educators worldwide.
Engaging youth in global health and social justice: a decade of experience teaching a high school summer course

Abstract:Background: Education and training in global health and social justice is crucial to ensuring the next generation of health professionals are poised to tackle the pressing issues of our time. Objectives: To develop and implement an intensive summer course on global health and social justice for high school students at the University of Southern California. Methods: This paper reviews the course aims and curriculum, its implementation both onsite and online, and reports on student course evaluations and long-term student outcomes. Results: Student satisfaction with the program was extremely high, which endured when the course went virtual during the COVID-19 pandemic. The most popular elements of the course included interactive, game-based activities and guest speakers. Many students reported that the course motivated them to pursue higher education and careers in global health or related fields. Conclusions: More universities should consider offering summer programs or other extension programs targeting high school students in order to meet the increasing demand for global health education. Recommendations for implementing global health courses for younger learners include having an interdisciplinary focus with a range of topics and diverse perspectives; provision of scholarships to allow low-income students and students from abroad to participate; prioritizing the integration of active learning and experiential educational opportunities; and incorporating debriefing and reflection as integral parts of learning.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a pilot summer workshop (CS4HS) held at Carnegie Mellon University in July 2006 for high school CS teachers to provide compelling material that the teachers can use in their classes to emphasize computational thinking and the many possibilities of computer science. Diversity and broadening participation was explicitly addressed throughout the workshop. We focused on broadening the image of what CS is - and who computer scientists are - since the reasons for under-representation in the field are very much the same as the reasons for the huge decline in interest. We describe the design of the workshop along with results from initial surveys and evaluations. Short-term evaluations show that this workshop was successful in changing the perception of CS for these teachers and giving them the impetus to include broader topics in their programming courses for the upcoming school year. Future surveys will track the long-term effect of this workshop.

Abstract:This paper describes an experience in teaching Machine Learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to a group of high school students over an intense one-month period. In this work, we provide an outline of an AI course curriculum we designed for high school students and then evaluate its effectiveness by analyzing student's feedback and student outcomes. After closely observing students, evaluating their responses to our surveys, and analyzing their contribution to the course project, we identified some possible impediments in teaching AI to high school students and propose some measures to avoid them. These measures include employing a combination of objectivist and constructivist pedagogies, reviewing/introducing basic programming concepts at the beginning of the course, and addressing gender discrepancies throughout the course.

Abstract:We analyze the curriculum of the early common-years of engineering in our institute using tools of statistical physics of complex networks. Naturally, a course programme is structured in a networked form (temporal dependency and prerequisites). In this approach, each topic within each programme is associated with a node, which in turn is joined by links representing the dependence of a topic for the understanding of another in a different discipline. As a course programme is a time-dependent structure, we propose a simple model to assign links between nodes, taking into account only two ingredients of the teaching-learning process: recursiveness and accumulation of knowledge. Since we already know the programmes, our objective is to verify if the proposed model is able to capture their particularities and to identify implications of different sequencing on the student learning in the early years of engineering degrees. Our model can be used as a systematic tool assisting the construction of a more interdisciplinary curriculum, articulating between disciplines of the undergraduate early-years in exact sciences.

Abstract:Networks have become increasingly relevant to everyday life as human society has become increasingly connected. Attaining a basic understanding of networks has thus become a necessary form of literacy for people (and for youths in particular). At the NetSci 2014 conference, we initiated a year-long process to develop an educational resource that concisely summarizes essential concepts about networks that can be used by anyone of school age or older. The process involved several brainstorming sessions on one key question: ‘What should every person living in the 21st century know about networks by the time he/she finishes secondary education?’ Different sessions reached diverse participants, which included professional researchers in network science, educators and high-school students. The generated ideas were connected by the students to construct a concept network. We examined community structure in the concept network to group ideas into a set of important themes, which we refined through discussion into seven essential concepts. The students played a major role in this development process by providing insights and perspectives that were often unrecognized by researchers and educators. The final result, ‘Network Literacy: Essential Concepts and Core Ideas’, is now available as a booklet in several different languages from http://tinyurl.com/networkliteracy.

Abstract:Understanding course enrollment patterns is valuable to predict upcoming demands for future courses, and to provide student with realistic courses to pursue given their current backgrounds. This study uses undergraduate student enrollment data to form networks of courses where connections are based on student co-enrollments. The course networks generated in this paper are based on eight years of undergraduate course enrollment data from a large metropolitan university. The networks are analyzed to identify "hub" courses often taken with many other courses. Two notions of hubs are considered: one focused on raw popularity across all students, and one focused on proportional likelihoods of co-enrollment with other courses. A variety of network metrics are calculated to evaluate the course networks. Academic departments and high-level academic categories, such as Humanities vs STEM, are studied for their influence over course groupings. The identification of hub courses has practical applications, since it can help better predict the impact of changes in course offerings and in course popularity, and in the case of interdisciplinary hub courses, can be used to increase or decrease interest and enrollments in specific academic departments and areas.

Abstract:The Louisiana Department of Education partnered with the Gordon A. Cain Center at LSU to pilot a Computing High School Graduation Pathway. The first course in the pathway, Introduction to Computational Thinking (ICT), is designed to teach programming and reinforce mathematical practice skills of nine-grade students, with an emphasis on promoting higher order thinking. In 2017-18, about 200 students and five teachers participated in the pilot, in 2018-2019 the participation increased to 400 students, and in the current 2019-2020 year about 800 students in 11 schools are involved. Professional development starts with a five-week intensive summer institute, which is complemented with follow-up Saturday sessions and coaching support during the academic year. After describing the course content and briefly the teacher training, we discuss the data we have collected in the last two years. The overall student reception of the course has been positive, but the course was categorized by most students as hard. However, the Computing Attitude Survey analysis indicates that the difficulty of the course did not demotivate the students. The pre-post test content assessments show that students learned not only the language, but also general principles of programming, logic and modeling, as well as use of variables, expressions and functions. Lessons learned during the pilot phase motivated changes, such as emphasizing during PD the need to provide timely feedback to students, provide detailed rubrics for the projects and reorganize the lessons to increase the initial engagement with the material. After two years of running pilots, the course is becoming student-centered, where most of the code and image samples provided in the lessons are based on code created by previous students.

Abstract:A summary of an experimental course on fractals is given that was held for young learners at age 12. The course was a part of Epsilon camp, a program designed for very gifted students who have already demonstrated high interest in studying mathematics. Prerequisites for the course were mastery of Algebra I, experience and fluency in skills like exponentials and square roots, solving equations. Also, at least two preliminary years were required in a prior Epsilon camp. The summary gives an overview of the flow of teaching, the achieved results and some evaluation of the given feedback.
