Abstract:We show that every countable cograph has either one or infinitely many siblings. This answers, very partially, a conjecture of Thomassé. The main tools are the notion of well quasi ordering and the correspondence between cographs and some labelled ordered trees.

Abstract:A sibling of a relational structure $R$ is any structure $S$ which can be embedded into $R$ and, vice versa, in which $R$ can be embedded. Let $sib(R)$ be the number of siblings of $R$, these siblings being counted up to isomorphism. Thomassé conjectured that for countable relational structures made of at most countably many relations, $sib(R)$ is either $1$, countably infinite, or the size of the continuum; but even showing the special case $sib(R)=1$ or infinite is unsettled when $R$ is a countable tree. This is related to Bonato-Tardif conjecture asserting that for every tree $T$ the number of trees which are sibling of $T$ is either one or infinite. We prove that if $R$ is countable and $\aleph_{0}$-categorical, then indeed $sib(R)$ is one or infinite. Furthermore, $sib(R)$ is one if and only if $R$ is finitely partitionable in the sense of Hodkinson and Macpherson. The key tools in our proof are the notion of monomorphic decomposition of a relational structure introduced in a paper by Pouzet and Thiéry 2013 and studied further by Oudrar and Pouzet 2015, and a result of Frasnay 1984.

Abstract:We prove that a countable direct sum of chains has either one, countably many or else continuum many isomorphism classes of siblings. This proves Thomassé's conjecture for such structures. Further, we show that a direct sum of chains of any cardinality has one or infinitely many siblings, up to isomorphism.

Abstract:Similar to topological spaces, we introduce the Cantor-Bendixson rank of a tree $T$ by repeatedly removing the leaves and the isolated vertices of $T$ using transfinite recursion. Then, we give a representation of a tree $T$ as a leafless tree $T^\infty$ with some leafy trees attached to $T^\infty$. With this representation at our disposal, we count the siblings of a tree and obtain partial results towards a conjecture of Bonato and Tardif.

Abstract:Cographs are exactly hereditarily well-colored graphs, i.e., the graphs for which a greedy coloring of every induced subgraph uses only the minimally necessary number of colors $\chi(G)$. In recent work on reciprocal best match graphs so-called hierarchically coloring play an important role. Here we show that greedy colorings are a special case of hierarchical coloring, which also require no more than $\chi(G)$ colors.

Abstract:A homomorphism from a graph G to a graph H is a function from V ( G ) to V ( H ) that preserves edges. Many combinatorial structures that arise in mathematics and in computer science can be represented naturally as graph homomorphisms and as weighted sums of graph homomorphisms. In this article, we study the complexity of counting homomorphisms modulo 2. The complexity of modular counting was introduced by Papadimitriou and Zachos and it has been pioneered by Valiant who famously introduced a problem for which counting modulo 7 is easy but counting modulo 2 is intractable. Modular counting provides a rich setting in which to study the structure of homomorphism problems. In this case, the structure of the graph H has a big influence on the complexity of the problem. Thus, our approach is graph-theoretic. We give a complete solution for the class of cactus graphs, which are connected graphs in which every edge belongs to at most one cycle. Cactus graphs arise in many applications such as the modelling of wireless sensor networks and the comparison of genomes. We show that, for some cactus graphs H , counting homomorphisms to H modulo 2 can be done in polynomial time. For every other fixed cactus graph H , the problem is complete in the complexity class ⊕ P , which is a wide complexity class to which every problem in the polynomial hierarchy can be reduced (using randomised reductions). Determining which H lead to tractable problems can be done in polynomial time. Our result builds upon the work of Faben and Jerrum, who gave a dichotomy for the case in which H is a tree.

Abstract:We construct a pair of non-isomorphic, bipartite graphs which are not distinguished by counting the number of homomorphisms to any tree. This answers a question raised by Atserias et al. (LICS 2021). In order to establish the construction, we analyse the equivalence relations induced by counting homomorphisms to trees of diameter two and three and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for two graphs to be equivalent. We show that three is the optimal diameter for our construction.

Abstract:Any algebraic connection on a vector bundle on a smooth complex algebraic curve determines an irregular class and in turn a fission tree at each puncture. The fission trees are the discrete data classifying the admissible deformation classes. Here we explain how to count the fission trees with given slope and number of leaves, in the untwisted case. This also leads to a clearer picture of the ``periodic table'' of the atoms that play the role of building blocks in 2d gauge theory.

Abstract:The simple connected graphs may be classified by their cycle composition (number and lengths of cycles). This work derives the counting series of the simple connected graphs that have cycles of unrestricted number and length, but no overlapping cycles. Cycle pairs of these graphs of interest must not have common nodes or edges. The recipe of counting these graphs is based on the counting series of the associated planted graphs, multisets of planted graphs, a recursive synthesis of enriched trees, and a generalized Otter's formula that maps the underlying rooted block graphs to the underlying block graphs.

Abstract:We obtain several results concerning the concept of isotypic structures. Namely we prove that any field of finite transcendence degree over a prime subfield is defined by types; then we construct isotypic but not isomorphic structures with countable underlying sets: totally ordered sets, fields, and groups. This answers an old question by B. Plotkin for groups.

Abstract:In this paper we consider particular graphs defined by $\overline{\overline{\overline{K_{\alpha_1}}\cup K_{\alpha_2}}\cup\cdots \cup K_{\alpha_k}}$, where $k$ is even, $K_\alpha$ is a complete graph on $\alpha$ vertices, $\cup$ stands for the disjoint union and an overline denotes the complementary graph. These graphs do not contain the $4$-vertex path as an induced subgraph, i.e., they belong to the class of cographs. In addition, they are iteratively constructed from the generating sequence $(\alpha_1, \alpha_2, \ldots, \alpha_k)$. Our primary question is what invariants or graph properties can be deduced form a given sequence. In this context, we compute the Lapacian eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenspaces, and derive a lower and an upper bound for the number of distinct Laplacian eigenvalues. We also determine the graphs under consideration with a fixed number of vertices that either minimize or maximize the algebraic connectivity (that is the second smallest Laplacian eigenvalue). The clique number is computed in terms of a generating sequence and a relationship between it and the algebraic connectivity is established.

Abstract:We investigate some versions of amoeba for tree-forcings in the generalized Cantor and Baire spaces. This answers [10, Question 3.20] and generalizes a line of research that in the standard case has been studied in [11], [13], and [7]. Moreover, we also answer questions posed in [3] by Friedman, Khomskii, and Kulikov, about the relationships between regularity properties at uncountable cardinals. We show $\Sigma_1^1$-counterexamples to some regularity properties related to trees without club splitting. In particular we prove a strong relationship between the Ramsey and the Baire properties, in slight contrast with the standard case.

Abstract:We present a streamlined exposition of a construction by R. Chen, A. Poulin, R. Tao, and A. Tserunyan, which proves the treeability of equivalence relations generated by any locally-finite Borel graph such that each component is a quasi-tree. More generally, we show that if each component of a locally-finite Borel graph admits a finitely-separating Borel family of cuts, then we may 'canonically' construct a forest of special ultrafilters; moreover, if the cuts are dense towards ends, then this forest is a Borel treeing.

On the joint embedding property for cographs and trees

Abstract:A family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$ is said to have the joint embedding property (JEP) if for every $G_1, G_2\in \mathcal{F}$, there is an $H\in \mathcal{F}$ that contains both $G_1$ and $G_2$ as induced subgraphs. If $\mathcal{F}$ is given by a finite set $S$ of forbidden induced subgraphs, it is known that determining if $\mathcal{F}$ has JEP is undecidable. We prove that this problem is decidable if $P_4\in S$ and generalize this result to families of rooted labeled trees under topological containment, bounded treewidth families under the graph minor relation, and bounded cliquewidth families under the induced subgraph relation.

Quantum properties of $\mathcal F$-cographs

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study of quantum properties of finite graphs, namely, quantum asymmetry, quantum symmetry, and quantum isomorphism. We define the Schmidt alternative for a class of graphs, which reveals to be a useful tool for studying quantum symmetries of graphs. After showing that quantum isomorphic graphs have quantum isomorphic centers and connected components, we solve the aforementioned problems for the classes of cographs and forests. We also compute their quantum automorphism groups for the first time. In doing so, we extend to the noncommutative setting a theorem of Jordan. Using general results on $\mathcal F$-cographs, we extend the precedent results to $\mathcal G_5$-cographs and tree-cographs, two distinct strictly proper superclasses of cographs and forests respectively. Finally, we show that quantum isomorphic planar graphs are isomorphic.

Branching trees I: Concatenation and infinite divisibility

Abstract:The goal of this work is to decompose random populations with a genealogy in subfamilies of a given degree of kinship and to obtain a notion of infinitely divisible genealogies. We model the genealogical structure of a population by (equivalence classes of) ultrametric measure spaces (um-spaces) as elements of the Polish space U which we recall. In order to then analyze the family structure in this coding we introduce an algebraic structure on um-spaces (a consistent collection of semigroups). This allows us to obtain a path of collections of subfamilies of fixed kinship h (described as ultrametric measure spaces), for every depth h as a measurable functional of the genealogy. Random elements in the semigroup are studied, in particular infinitely divisible random variables. Here we define infinite divisibility of random genealogies as the property that the h-tops can be represented as concatenation of independent identically distributed h-forests for every h and obtain a Levy-Khintchine representation of this object and a corresponding representation via a concatenation of points of a Poisson point process of h-forests. Finally the case of discrete and marked um-spaces is treated allowing to apply the results to both the individual based and most important spatial populations. The results have various applications. In particular the case of the genealogical (U-valued) Feller diffusion and genealogical (U V -valued) super random walk is treated based on the present work in [DG18b] and [GRG]. In the part II of this paper we go in a different direction and refine the study in the case of continuum branching populations, give a refined analysis of the Laplace functional and give a representation in terms of a Cox process on h-trees, rather than forests.

Abstract:We prove that the existence of a non-special tree of size is equivalent to the existence of an uncountably chromatic graph with no minor of size , establishing a connection between the special tree number and the uncountable Hadwiger conjecture. Also characterizations of Aronszajn, Kurepa and Suslin trees using graphs are deduced. A new generalized notion of connectedness for graphs is introduced using which we are able to characterize weakly compact cardinals.

Abstract:By analogy with the Cayley graph of a group with respect to a finite generating set or the Cayley-Abels graph of a totally disconnected, locally compact group, we introduce countable connected graphs associated to Polish groups that we term Cayley-Abels-Rosendal graphs. A group admitting a Cayley-Abels-Rosendal graph acts on it continuously, coarsely metrically properly and cocompactly by isometries of the path metric. By an expansion of the Milnor-Schwarz lemma, it follows that the group is generated by a coarsely bounded set and the group equipped with (a suitably compatible alteration of) a word metric with respect to a coarsely bounded generating set and the graph are quasi-isometric. In other words, groups admitting Cayley-Abels-Rosendal graphs are topological analogues of the finitely generated groups. Our goal is to introduce this topological perspective to a geometric group theorist. We apply these concepts to homeomorphism groups of countable Stone spaces. We completely characterize when these homeomorphism groups are coarsely bounded, when they are locally bounded (all of them are), and when they admit a Cayley-Abels-Rosendal graph, and if so produce a coarsely bounded generating set.

Countable Borel treeable equivalence relations are classifiable by $\ell_1$

Abstract:Gao and Jackson showed that any countable Borel equivalence relation (CBER) induced by a countable abelian Polish group is hyperfinite. This prompted Hjorth to ask if this is in fact true for all CBERs classifiable by (uncountable) abelian Polish groups. We describe reductions involving free Banach spaces to show that every treeable CBER is classifiable by an abelian Polish group. As there exist treeable CBERs that are not hyperfinite, this answers Hjorth's question in the negative. On the other hand, we show that any CBER classifiable by a countable product of locally compact abelian Polish groups (such as $\mathbb{R}^\omega$) is indeed hyperfinite. We use a small fragment of the Hjorth analysis of Polish group actions, which is Hjorth's generalization of the Scott analysis of countable structures to Polish group actions.

Abstract:In recent work, the authors developed a simple method of constructing topological spaces from certain well-behaved partially ordered sets -- those coming from sequences of relations between finite sets. This method associates a given poset with its spectrum, which is a compact T_1 topological space. In this paper, we focus on the case where such finite sets have a graph structure and the relations belong to a given graph category. We relate topological properties of the spectrum to combinatorial properties of the graph categories involved. We then utilise this to exhibit elementary combinatorial constructions of well-known continua as Fraïssé limits of finite graphs in categories with relational morphisms.
