Abstract:The Eichler-Selberg trace formula expresses the trace of Hecke operators on spaces of cusp forms as weighted sums of Hurwitz-Kronecker class numbers. We extend this formula to a natural class of relations for traces of singular moduli, where one views class numbers as traces of the constant function $j_0(\tau)=1$. More generally, we consider the singular moduli for the Hecke system of modular functions \[ j_m(\tau) := mT_m \left(j(\tau)-744\right). \] For each $\nu\geq 0$ and $m\geq 1$, we obtain an Eichler-Selberg relation. For $\nu=0$ and $m\in \{1, 2\},$ these relations are Kaneko's celebrated singular moduli formulas for the coefficients of $j(\tau).$ For each $\nu\geq 1$ and $m\geq 1,$ we obtain a new Eichler-Selberg trace formula for the Hecke action on the space of weight $2\nu+2$ cusp forms, where the traces of $j_m(\tau)$ singular moduli replace Hurwitz-Kronecker class numbers. These formulas involve a new term that is assembled from values of symmetrized shifted convolution $L$-functions.

Abstract:In this paper we study algebras with trace and their trace polynomial identities over a field of characteristic 0. We consider two commutative matrix algebras: $D_2$, the algebra of $2\times 2$ diagonal matrices and $C_2$, the algebra of $2 \times 2$ matrices generated by $e_{11}+e_{22}$ and $e_{12}$. We describe all possible traces on these algebras and we study the corresponding trace codimensions. Moreover we characterize the varieties with trace of polynomial growth generated by a finite dimensional algebra. As a consequence, we see that the growth of a variety with trace is either polynomial or exponential.

Markov traces on degenerate cyclotomic Hecke algebras

Abstract:Let $H_n(\boldsymbol{u})$ be the degenerate cyclotomic Hecke algebra with parameter $\boldsymbol{u}=(u_1, \ldots, u_m)$ over $\mathbb{C}(\boldsymbol{u})$. We define and construct the (non-)normalized Markov traces on the sequence $\{H_n(\boldsymbol{u})\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$. This allows us to provide a canonical symmetrizing form on $H_n(\boldsymbol{u})$ and show that the Brudan--Kleshchev trace on $H_n(\boldsymbol{u})$ is a specialization of the non-normalized Markov traces.

Abstract:In this paper we study matrix algebras with a degenerate trace in the framework of the theory of polynomial identities. The first part is devoted to the study of the algebra $D_n$ of $n \times n$ diagonal matrices. We prove that, in case of a degenerate trace, all its trace identities follow by the commutativity law and by pure trace identities. Moreover we relate the trace identities of $D_{n+1}$ endowed with a degenerate trace, to those of $D_n$ with the corresponding trace. This allows us to determine the generators of the trace T-ideal of $D_3$. In the second part we study commutative subalgebras of $M_k(F)$, denoted by $C_k$ of the type $F + J$ that can be endowed with the so-called strange traces: $tr(a+j) = \alpha a + \beta j$, for any $a+j \in C_k$, $\alpha$, $\beta \in F$. Here $J$ is the radical of $C_k$. In case $\beta = 0$ such a trace is degenerate, and we study the trace identities satisfied by the algebra $C_k$, for every $k \geq 2$. Moreover we prove that these algebras generate the so-called minimal varieties of polynomial growth. In the last part of the paper, devoted to the study of varieties of polynomial growth, we completely classify the subvarieties of the varieties of algebras of almost polynomial growth introduced in an earlier paper of the same authors.

Abstract:Let A and B be graded algebras in the same variety of trace algebras, such that A is a finite-dimensional, central simple power associative algebra (in the ordinary sense). Over a field K of characteristic zero, we study sufficient conditions that ensure B to be a graded subalgebra of A . More precisely, we prove, under additional hypotheses, that there is a graded and trace-preserving embedding from B to A over some associative and commutative K -algebra C if and only if B satisfies all G -trace identities of A over K. As a consequence of these results, we give a geometric interpretation of our main theorem under the context of graded algebras, and we apply them beyond the Cayley–Hamilton algebras presented in [24, 29]. Such results open a wide range of opportunities to study geometry in Jordan and alternative algebras (with trivial grading).

Abstract:Given a connected semisimple Lie group $G$ and an arithmetic subgroup $\Gamma$, it is well-known that each irreducible representation $\pi$ of $G$ occurs in the discrete spectrum $L^2_{\text{disc}}(\Gamma\backslash G)$ of $L^2(\Gamma\backslash G)$ with at most a finite multiplicity $m_{\Gamma}(\pi)$. While $m_{\Gamma}(\pi)$ is unknown in general, we are interested in its limit as $\Gamma$ is taken to be in a tower of lattices $\Gamma_1\supset \Gamma_2\supset\dots$. For a bounded measurable subset $X$ of the unitary dual $\widehat{G}$, we let $m_{\Gamma_n}(X)$ be the sum of the multiplicity $m_{\Gamma_n}(\pi)$ of a representation $\pi$ over all $\pi$ in $X$. Let $H_X$ be the direct integral of the irreducible representations in $X$, which is also a module over the group von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{L}\Gamma_n$. Abstract:Let $K$ be a field of characteristic 0, and let $E$ be the infinite-dimensional Grassmann algebra over $K$. We consider $E$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded algebra, where the grading is given by the vector subspaces $E_0$ and $E_1$, consisting of monomials of even and odd lengths, respectively. Thus, if $A = A_0 \oplus A_1$ is an associative $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded algebra, we can consider the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded algebra $A \hat{\otimes} E = (A_0 \otimes E_0) \oplus (A_1 \otimes E_1)$. In case both $E$ and $A$ are endowed with superinvolutions, we can define a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded involution on $A \hat{\otimes} E$ induced by the respective superinvolutions. In this paper, we consider the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded matrix algebras $M_{1,1}(K)$, $UT_{1,1}(K)$, and $UT_{(0,1,0)}(K)$ endowed with superinvolutions. We shall provide a description of the polynomial identities and the cocharacter sequences of $M_{1,1}(K)\hat{\otimes} E$, $UT_{1,1}(K)\hat{\otimes} E$, and $UT_{(0,1,0)}(K)\hat{\otimes} E$, considering these resulting algebras as $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded algebras with graded involution.

Abstract:We introduce an appropriate notion of trace in the setting of quaternionic linear operators, arising from the well-known companion matrices. We then use this notion to define the quaternionic Fredholm determinant of trace-class operators in Hilbert spaces, and show that an analog of the classical Grothendieck-Lidskii formula, relating the trace of an operator with its eigenvalues, holds. We then extend these results to the so-called 2 3 -nuclear (Fredholm) operators in the context of quaternionic locally convex spaces. While doing so, we develop some results in the theory of topological tensor products of noncommutative modules, and show that the trace defined ad hoc in terms of companion matrices, arises naturally as part of a canonical trace.

Abstract:Let F be a field of characteristic zero and let m ≥ 2 be an integer. In this paper, we prove that if a group grading on U T m ( F ) admits a graded involution then this grading is a coarsening of a Z ⌊ m 2 ⌋ -grading on U T m ( F ) and the graded involution is equivalent to the reflection or symplectic involution on U T m ( F ) , this grading is called the finest grading on U T m ( F ) . Furthermore, if m ≤ 4 the algebra U T m ( F ) with the finest grading satisfies no non-trivial monomial identities. For the finest grading, a finite basis for the ( Z ⌊ m 2 ⌋ , ⁎ ) -identities is exhibited with the reflection and symplectic involutions and the asymptotic growth of the ( Z ⌊ m 2 ⌋ , ⁎ ) -codimensions is determined. As a consequence, we prove that for any G-grading on U T m ( F ) and any graded involution the ( G , ⁎ ) -exponent is m. Finally, we study the algebra U T 3 ( F ) . For this algebra, there are, up to equivalence, two non-trivial gradings that admit a graded involution: the canonical Z -grading and the Z 2 -grading induced by ( 0 , 1 , 0 ) . We determine a basis for the ( Z 2 , ⁎ ) -identities and we compute the codimension sequence for the ( Z 2 , ⁎ ) -graded identities for U T 3 ( F ) .

A note on traces for the Heisenberg calculus

Abstract:In previous work, we gave a local formula for the index of Heisenberg elliptic operators on contact manifolds. We constructed a cocycle in periodic cyclic cohomology which, when paired with the Connes-Chern character of the principal Heisenberg symbol, calculates the index. A crucial ingredient of our index formula was a new trace on the algebra of Heisenberg pseudodifferential operators. The construction of this trace was rather involved. In the present paper, we clarify the nature of this trace.

Abstract:We prove that the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_n(\textbf{F}_q)$ of traceless matrices over a finite field of characteristic $p$ can be generated by $2$ elements with exceptions when $(n, p)$ is $(3, 3)$ or $(4,2)$. In the latter cases, we establish curious identities that obstruct $2$-generation.

Abstract:The familiar trace of a square matrix generalizes to a trace of an endomorphism of a dualizable object in a symmetric monoidal category. To extend these ideas to other settings, such as modules over non-commutative rings, the trace can be generalized to a bicategory equipped with additional structure called a shadow. We propose a notion of bicategorical cotrace of certain maps involving dualizable objects in a closed bicategory equipped with a coshadow, and we use this framework to draw connections to work of Lipman on residues and traces with Hochschild (co)homology, and to work of Ganter and Kapranov on 2-representations and 2-characters.

Abstract:In this paper we obtain explicit formulas for the traces of Hecke operators on spaces of cusp forms in certain instances related to arithmetic triangle groups. These expressions are in terms of hypergeometric character sums over finite fields, a theory developed largely by Greene, Katz, Beukers-Cohen-Mellit, and Fuselier-Long-Ramakrishna-Swisher-Tu. Our approach, in contrast to the previous works, is uniform and more geometric, and it works equally well for forms on elliptic modular curves and Shimura curves. The same method can be applied to obtain eigenvalues of Hecke operators as well.

Abstract:Griffin, the second author, and Molnar studied coefficient duality for canonical bases for a broad range of spaces of weakly holomorphic modular forms, showing that the Fourier coefficients of canonical basis elements appear as negatives of Fourier coefficients for elements of a canonical basis of a related space of forms. We investigate the effect of the trace operator on this duality for modular forms for $\Gamma_0(N)$ of genus zero and show exactly when duality still holds after applying the trace operator.

Abstract:We construct a bijection between certain Deodhar components of a braid variety constructed from an affine Kac-Moody group of type $A_{n-1}$ and vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices. By an argument of Galashin, Lam, and Williams using Opdam's trace formula in the affine Hecke algebra and an identity due to Haglund, we obtain an elaborate new proof for the enumeration of the number of vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices.
