Abstract:Catanese surfaces are regular surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$. They specialize to double covers of Barlow surfaces. We prove that the $CH_0$ group of a Catanese surface is equal to $\mathbb{Z}$, which implies the same result for the Barlow surfaces. We will also give a conditional application (more precisely, assuming the variational Hodge conjecture) of the same method to the Chow motive of low degree $K3$ surfaces.

Abstract:We produce a family of numerical Campedelli surfaces with \Z/6 torsion by constructing the (Gorenstein codimension 5) canonical ring of the étale six to one cover using serial unprojection. In Section 2 we develop the necessary algebraic machinery. Section 3 contains the numerical Campedelli surface construction, while Section 4 contains remarks and open questions.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct two deformations of the Godeaux surface with π1≅Z4, such that each central fibre contains a family of conics. We show that surfaces that are birational to these Godeaux surfaces exist in two connected components of the moduli space of the Campedelli surfaces with a fundamental group of order 8. The whole construction is simplified by the use of key varieties.

Abstract:Surfaces of general type with canonical map of degree d bigger than 8 have bounded geometric genus and irregularity. In particular the irregularity is at most 2 if d>= 10. In the present paper, the existence of surfaces with d=10 and all possible irregularities, surfaces with d = 12 and irregularity 1 and 2, and surfaces with d = 14 and irregularity 0 and 1 is proven, by constructing these surfaces as $ \mathbb{Z}_2^3 $-covers of certain rational surfaces. These results together with the construction by C. Rito of a surface with d=12 and irregularity 0 show that all the possibilities for the irregularity in the cases d=10, d=12 can occur, whilst the existence of a surface with d=14 and irregularity 2 is still an open problem.

Effective zero-cycles and the Bloch-Beilinson filtration

Abstract:A conjecture of Voisin states that two points on a smooth projective complex variety whose algebra of holomorphic forms is generated in degree 2 are rationally equivalent to each other if and only if their difference lies in the third step of the Bloch-Beilinson filtration. In this note, we formulate a generalization that allows for rational equivalence of effective zero-cycles of higher degree, at the expense of looking deeper in the Bloch-Beilinson filtration. In the first half, we provide evidence in support of this conjecture in the case of abelian varieties and projective hyper-Kähler manifolds. Notably, we give explicit criteria for rational equivalence of effective zero-cycles on moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on K3 surfaces, generalizing that of Marian-Zhao. In the second half, in an effort to explain our main conjecture, we formulate a second conjecture predicting when the diagonal of a smooth projective variety belongs to a subalgebra of the ring of correspondences generated in low degree.

Abstract:We exhibit closed hyperbolic surfaces of genus $10$ and $17$ such that the multiplicity of the first nonzero eigenvalue of their Laplacian is larger than the maximum conjectured by Yves Colin de Verdière in 1986. In order to determine these multiplicities, we apply the twisted Selberg trace formula to the representations induced by the isometry groups of these surfaces on corresponding triangle groups.

Abstract:In this note we study numerically the combinatorics of curves and geodesics on the torus with one boundary component. A potential computational difficulty is avoided by counting inside specific orbits of the mapping class group up to a certain length, either geometric or combinatorial. Some cases are rigurolosly determined and the Euler totient function emerges. More complicated orbits are computed to suggest an array of formulae continuing to involve the Euler totient function. We formulate six precise conjectures. These include a novel study of an "inverse" function of the Mirzakhani's asymptotics. The geometric part of our study was motivated by the rationality aspect of these asymptotics.

On the Finkelberg-Ginzburg Mirabolic Monodromy Conjecture

Abstract:We compute the monodromy of the mirabolic Harish-Chandra D-module for all values of the parameters (theta,c) in rank 1, and outside an explicit codimension 2 set of values in ranks 2 and higher. This shows in particular that the Finkelberg-Ginzburg conjecture, which is known to hold for generic values of (theta,c), fails at special values even in rank 1. Our main tools are Opdam's shift operators and intertwiners for the extended affine Weyl group, which allow for the resolution of resonances outside the codimension two set.

Abstract:In this paper, the generalized Bloch Conjecture on zero cycles for the quotient of certain complete intersections with trivial canonical bundle is proved to hold. As an application of Bloch-Srinivas method on the decomposition of the diagonal, we compute the rational coefficient Lawson homology for 1-cycles and codimension two cycles for these quotient varieties. The (Generalized) Hodge Conjecture is proved to hold for codimension two cycles (and hence also for 2-cycles) on these quotient varieties.

Abstract:The space of monic squarefree polynomials has a stratification according to the multiplicities of the critical points, called the equicritical stratification. Tracking the positions of roots and critical points, there is a map from the fundamental group of a stratum into a braid group. We give a complete determination of this map. It turns out to be characterized by the geometry of the translation surface structure on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ induced by the logarithmic derivative $df/f$ of a polynomial in the stratum.

Surface counterexamples to the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture

Abstract:It is well known that the Eisenbud-Goto regularity conjecture is true for arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay varieties, projective curves, smooth surfaces, smooth threefolds in $\mathbb{P}^5$, and toric varieties of codimension two. After J. McCullough and I. Peeva constructed counterexamples in 2018, it has been an interesting question to find the categories such that the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture holds. So far, surface counterexamples have not been found while counterexamples of any dimension greater or equal to 3 are known. In this paper, we construct counterexamples to the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture for projective surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^4$ and investigate projective invariants, cohomological properties, and geometric properties. The counterexamples are constructed via binomial rational maps between projective spaces.

Monodromy in the space of symmetric cubic surfaces with a line

Abstract:We explore the enumerative problem of finding lines on cubic surfaces defined by symmetric polynomials. We prove that the moduli space of symmetric cubic surfaces is an arithmetic quotient of the complex hyperbolic line, and determine constraints on the monodromy group of lines on symmetric cubic surfaces arising from Hodge theory and geometry of the associated cover. This interestingly fails to pin down the entire Galois group. Leveraging computations in equivariant line geometry and homotopy continuation, we prove that the Galois group is the Klein 4-group. This is the first computation in what promises to be an interesting direction of research: studying monodromy in classical enumerative problems restricted by a finite group of symmetries.

The Chow rings of the moduli spaces of curves of genus 7, 8, and 9

Abstract:The rational Chow ring of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of curves of genus $g$ is known for $g \leq 6$. Here, we determine the rational Chow rings of $\mathcal{M}_7, \mathcal{M}_8,$ and $\mathcal{M}_9$ by showing they are tautological. One key ingredient is intersection theory on Hurwitz spaces of degree $4$ and $5$ covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$, as developed by the authors in [1]. The main focus of this paper is a detailed geometric analysis of special tetragonal and pentagonal covers whose associated vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1$ are so unbalanced that they fail to lie in the large open subset considered in [1]. In genus $9$, we use work of Mukai [23] to present the locus of hexagonal curves as a global quotient stack, and, using equivariant intersection theory, we show its Chow ring is generated by restrictions of tautological classes.

Abstract:We relate the Brasselet number of a complex analytic function-germ defined on a complex analytic set to the critical points of its real part on the regular locus of the link. Similarly we give a new characterization of the Euler obstruction in terms of the critical points on the regular part of the link of the projection on a generic real line. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of the relation between the Euler obstruction and the Gauss–Bonnet measure, conjectured by Fu.

Abstract:We compute the fundamental group of the Galois cover of a surface of degree~$8$, with singularities of degree $4$, whose degeneration envelope is isomorphic to an octahedron. The group is shown to be a metabelian group of order $2^{23}$. The computation amalgamates local groups, classified elsewhere, by an iterative combination of computational and group theoretic methods. Three simplified surfaces, for which the fundamental group of the Galois cover is trivial, demonstrate how nontrivial cycles in the degenerated surface complicate the computation.

Abstract:Due to the orbifold singularities, the intersection numbers on the moduli space of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$ are in general rational numbers rather than integers. We study the properties of the denominators of these intersection numbers and their relationship with the orders of automorphism groups of stable curves. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber. We also present a conjectural multinomial type numerical property for Hodge integrals.

Abstract:We show the properness of the moduli stack of stable surfaces over $\mathbb{Z}[1/30]$, assuming the locally-stable reduction conjecture for stable surfaces. This relies on a local Kawamata--Viehweg vanishing theorem for for 3-dimensional log canonical singularities at closed point of characteristic $p \neq 2, 3$ and $5$ which are not log canonical centres.

Abstract:We prove an explicit reciprocity law for the Euler system attached to the spin motive of a genus 2 Siegel modular form. As consequences, we obtain one inclusion of the Iwasawa Main Conjecture for such motives, and the Bloch--Kato conjecture in analytic rank 0 for their critical twists.

Abstract:Moduli spaces of (polarized) Enriques surfaces can be described as open subsets of modular varieties of orthogonal type. It was shown by Gritsenko and Hulek that there are, up to isomorphism, only finitely many different moduli spaces of polarized Enriques surfaces. Here we investigate the possible arithmetic groups and show that there are exactly $87$ such groups up to conjugacy. We also show that all moduli spaces are dominated by a moduli space of polarized Enriques surfaces of degree $1240$. Ciliberto, Dedieu, Galati, and Knutsen have also investigated moduli spaces of polarized Enriques surfaces in detail. We discuss how our enumeration relates to theirs. We further compute the Tits building of the groups in question. Our computation is based on groups and indefinite quadratic forms and the algorithms used are explained.

Quasi-étale covers of Du Val del Pezzo surfaces and Zariski dense exceptional sets in Manin's conjecture

Abstract:We construct the first examples of singular del Pezzo surfaces with Zariski dense exceptional sets in Manin's conjecture, varying in degrees $1, 2$ and $3$. These examples arise from quasi-étale covers with higher $b$-invariants. We classify all quasi-étale covers of Du Val del Pezzo surfaces up to singularity types, extending earlier works of Miyanishi-Zhang. Then, we identify all potential examples by studying group actions on the pseudo-effective cones, and show that no such example exists in degree $\geq4$. Finally, we prove that Manin's conjecture with proper closed exceptional sets fails for specific examples, for which we also determine the conjectural exceptional set proposed by Lehmann-Sengupta-Tanimoto.
