Abstract:This paper reviewed the deep learning-based studies for medical imaging synthesis and its clinical application. Specifically, we summarized the recent developments of deep learning-based methods in inter- and intra-modality image synthesis by listing and highlighting the proposed methods, study designs and reported performances with related clinical applications on representative studies. The challenges among the reviewed studies were summarized in the discussion part.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore and review the research on medical image synthesis using deep - learning techniques and its clinical applications. Specifically, the authors summarize the latest progress in image synthesis between different modalities (such as from MRI to CT) and within the same modality (such as between different MRI sequences) based on deep - learning methods in recent years. By listing and emphasizing the proposed methods, research designs, and reported performance, and combining with representative studies of relevant clinical applications, this paper not only outlines the challenges in these studies but also discusses the trends and future development directions in this field. ### Problems the paper attempts to solve 1. **Cross - modality image synthesis**: How to use deep - learning techniques to achieve image conversion between different imaging modalities (such as MRI and CT), especially in radiotherapy and radiology, when specific imaging processes are infeasible, time - consuming, costly, or pose a radiation exposure risk, and how to facilitate the clinical workflow through image synthesis. 2. **Same - modality image synthesis**: How to perform image conversion between different protocols of the same imaging modality, such as conversion between different MRI sequences, or restore high - quality images from low - quality protocols to improve image quality and diagnostic accuracy. 3. **Generality and adaptability of methods**: Traditional image synthesis methods usually rely on human - defined rules, which are very sensitive to specific application scenarios and difficult to transfer between different modalities. Deep - learning methods, due to their data - driven characteristics, can be more widely applied to the synthesis tasks of multiple image modalities with minimal adjustment. 4. **Potential of clinical applications**: Explore how the application of deep - learning in image synthesis promotes the development of new clinical applications such as MRI - only radiotherapy planning, PET/MRI scanning, etc., thereby reducing the examination time and cost for patients while improving the accuracy of diagnosis and treatment. Through a systematic review and analysis of existing literature, this paper not only evaluates the performance and limitations of current technologies but also points out the directions for future research, providing valuable references for promoting the development of medical image synthesis technologies.
