Abstract:Confining acoustic fields in subwavelength volumes is of fundamental interest in wave-energy harvesting and high-resolution imaging. Phononic crystals have been shown to be capable of superfocusing but are highly limited by their very large dimensions. Acoustic metasurfaces can yield similar functionality with unit cells significantly smaller than the wavelength. However, they are studied mostly under effective medium theory and cannot manipulate evanescent waves directly to control near-field focusing. Here, we use a microscopic approach to study acoustic metasurfaces for subdiffraction focusing of reflected waves, which consist of an array of deep-subwavelength sized and spaced grooves. We further show that the focusing pattern can be tailored by the designer. To validate the effectiveness of our scheme, two representative metasurfaces are designed theoretically, proved numerically, and confirmed experimentally for subdiffraction sound focusing with different patterns. We hope that our approach can work as a general guideline to shape near-field signals in the broad field of acoustics.

Abstract:The optimal geometries of vector phase matching are determined for the cases of second harmonic generation, sum frequency generation, and difference frequency generation in a number of orthorhombic nonlinear optical crystals: KTP, KTA, KB5, KNbO 3 , LBO, CBO, and LRB4. The extreme surface method was used to define the wave vector directions of highest possible generation efficiency. As shown, in a significant number of cases vector phase matching ensures higher efficiencies than the scalar one.

Abstract:Acoustic wave propagation in single crystals, metamaterials and composite structures is a basic mechanism in acoustic, acousto-electronic and acousto-optic devices. Acoustic anisotropy of crystals provides a variety of device performances and application fields, but its role in pre-estimation of achievable device characteristics and location of crystal orientations with desired properties is often underestimated. A geometrical image of acoustic anisotropy can be an important tool in design of devices based on wave propagation in single crystals or combinations of anisotropic materials. We propose a fast and robust method for survey and visualization of acoustic anisotropy based on calculation of the eigenvalues of bulk acoustic wave (BAW) diffraction tensor (curvature of the slowness surface). The stereographic projection of these eigenvalues clearly reveals singular directions of BAW propagation (acoustic axes) in anisotropic media and areas of fast or slow variation of wave velocities. The method is illustrated by application to three crystals of different symmetry used in different types of acoustic devices: paratellurite, lithium niobate, and potassium gadolinium tungstate. The specific features of acoustic anisotropy are discussed for each crystal in terms of their potential application in devices. In addition, we demonstrate that visualization of acoustic anisotropy of lithium niobate helps to find orientations supporting propagation of high-velocity surface acoustic waves.

Abstract:Basing on the measurements of photoelastic coefficients, acoustic waves velocities and the refractive indices, the possible geometries for acoustooptic interaction in b-BaB2O4 crystals have been analysed. It has been shown that the acoustooptic figure of merit achieves its maximum value when the transverse acoustic wave v13 with the velocity 817m/s is propagated in YZ-plane. In this case M2=95.35*10-15s3/kg.

Abstract:The efficiency of acoustooptic (AO) diffraction in a-BaB2O4 and Li2B4O7 crystals is studied experimentally. The crystals are shown to be quite good AO materials. The efficiency of AO diffraction in a-BaB2O4 reaches h=30% at the electric signal power of P=0.7W for the transverse acoustic wave and 15% at the power of P=0.56W for the longitudinal wave. The same parameter for Li2B4O7 reaches h=21% at P=0,81W for the longitudinal acoustic wave.

Abstract:The remarkable acousto-optical properties of superlattices for light wavelength near the condition of the Bragg reflection at the interfaces are reported here for the first time. Because of the assistance of a reciprocal lattice vector in the phase-matching condition, the collinear coupling between the light and ultrasonic waves becomes possible in the superlattice. At the same time, the diffraction efficiency is strongly increased by an optical resonance effect in the superlattice. Acousto-optical devices based on semiconductor superlattice structures are proposed, which can be very efficient, rapid, and compact.

Abstract:We consider the problem of the construction of the acoustic structure of arbitrary geometry with prescribed desired properties. We use optimization approach for the solution of this problem and minimize the Tikhonov functional on adaptively refined meshes. These meshes are refined locally only in places where the acoustic structure should be designed. Our special symmetric mesh refinement strategy together with interpolation procedure allows the construction of the symmetric acoustic material with prescribed properties. Efficiency of the presented adaptive optimization algorithm is illustrated on the construction of the symmetric acoustic material in two dimensions.

A Subdivision-Based Combined Shape and Topology Optimization in Acoustics

Abstract:We propose a combined shape and topology optimization approach in this research for 3D acoustics by using the isogeometric boundary element method with subdivision surfaces. The existing structural optimization methods mainly contain shape and topology schemes, with the former changing the surface geometric profile of the structure and the latter changing the material distribution topology or hole topology of the structure. In the present acoustic performance optimization, the coordinates of the control points in the subdivision surfaces fine mesh are selected as the shape design parameters of the structure, the artificial density of the sound absorbing material covered on the structure surface is set as the topology design parameter, and the combined topology and shape optimization approach is established through the sound field analysis of the subdivision surfaces boundary element method as a bridge. The topology and shape sensitivities of the approach are calculated using the adjoint variable method, which ensures the efficiency of the optimization. The geometric jaggedness and material distribution discontinuities that appear in the optimization process are overcome to a certain degree by the multiresolution method and solid isotropic material with penalization. Numerical examples are given to validate the effectiveness of the presented optimization approach.

Abstract:In this paper, an interface/surface element is formulated based on the Gurtin–Murdoch interface/surface elasticity theory for accounting the interface/surface effect on the elastic wave propagation in two-dimensional nanosized phononic crystals. The interface/surface element is subsequently incorporated into the finite element procedure for calculating the elastic wave band structure of two-dimensional nanosized phononic crystals with consideration of the interface/surface effect. Elastic wave band structures of two-dimensional phononic crystals comprising a square array of circular or elliptical cylindrical nanoholes embedded in an aluminum matrix are analyzed. Numerical results evidence that the interface/surface effect on the elastic wave band structure can be remarkable when the characteristic size reduces to nanometers.

Abstract:Standardized methods for measuring sound absorption such as the impedance tube and reverberation chamber methods are limited to normal or diffuse incidence, respectively. Two research axes have been generally followed in the literature to develop alternative techniques, the first one focusing on the measurement part, that is from the two-microphone technique to the use of microphone arrays or pressure-velocity sensors. The second axis focuses on the excitation part with for instance the use of sound field synthesis techniques. Since acoustic impedance and sound absorption coefficient of materials are classically defined under normal and oblique plane wave excitation, synthesizing an "ideal" plane wave using a loudspeaker array would allow measuring these acoustics quantities using a simple microphone pair. In this article, the effect of the different parameters of a loudspeaker array on acoustic plane waves reproduction on a material's surface is first numerically studied. Then, numerical and experimental results for the estimation of both impedance and absorption coefficients are reported. These results show that sound field synthesis allows to characterize a material for arbitrary incidence angles over a wide frequency range, thus offering an alternative method to standard techniques and an improvement over existing works.

Exact Microtheoretical Approach to Calculation of Optical Properties of Ultralow Dimensional Crystals

Abstract:The main problem in theoretical analysis of structures with strong confinement is the fact that standard mathematical tools: differential equations and Fourier's transformations are no longer applicable. In this paper we have demonstrated that method of Green's functions can be successfully used on low-dimension crystal samples, as a consequence of quantum size effects. We can illustrate modified model through the prime cubic structure molecular crystal: bulk and ultrathin film. Our analysis starts with standard exciton Hamiltonian with definition of commutative Green's function and equation of motion. We have presented detailed procedure of calculations of Green's functions, and further dispersion law, distribution of states and relative permittivity for bulk samples. After this, we have followed the same procedures for obtaining the properties of excitons in ultra-thin films. The results have been presented graphically. Besides modified method of Green's functions we have shown that the exciton energy spectrum is discrete in film structures (with number of energy levels equal to the number of atomic planes of the film). Compared to the bulk structures, with continual absorption zone, in film structures exist resonant absorption peaks. With increased film thickness differences between bulk and film vanish.

Abstract:The low temperature acoustic and thermal properties of amorphous, glassy materials are remarkably similar. All these properties are described theoretically with reasonable quantitative accuracy by assuming that the amorphous solid contains dynamical defects that can be described at low temperatures as an ensemble of two-level systems (TLS), but the deep nature of these TLSs is not clarified yet. Moreover, glassy properties were found also in disordered crystals, quasicrystals, and even perfect crystals with a large number of atoms in the unit cell. In crystals, the glassy properties are not universal, like in amorphous materials, and also exhibit anisotropy. Recently it was proposed a model for the interaction of two-level systems with arbitrary strain fields (Phys. Rev. B 75, 64202, 2007), which was used to calculate the thermal properties of nanoscopic membranes at low temperatures. The model is also suitable for the description of anisotropic crystals. We describe here the results of the calculation of anisotropic glass-like properties in crystals of various lattice symmetries, emphasizing the tetragonal symmetry.

Abstract:In this paper gradient based topology optimization (TO) is used to discover 3-D phononic structures that exhibit ultra-wide normalized all-angle all-mode band gaps. The challenging computational task of repeated 3-D phononic band-structure evaluations is accomplished by a combination of a fast mixed variational eigenvalue solver and distributed Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) parallel computations. The TO algorithm utilizes the material distribution-based approach and a gradient-based optimizer. The design sensitivity for the mixed variational eigenvalue problem is derived using the adjoint method and is implemented through highly efficient vectorization techniques. We present optimized results for two-material simple cubic (SC), body centered cubic (BCC), and face centered cubic (FCC) crystal structures and show that in each of these cases different initial designs converge to single inclusion network topologies within their corresponding primitive cells. The optimized results show that large phononic stop bands for bulk wave propagation can be achieved at lower than close packed spherical configurations leading to lighter unit cells. For tungsten carbide - epoxy crystals we identify all angle all mode normalized stop bands exceeding 100%, which is larger than what is possible with only spherical inclusions.

Abstract:Stimulated Brillouin scattering recently allowed experimental excitation of surface acoustic resonances in micro-devices, enabling vibration at rates in the range of 50 MHz to 12 GHz. The experimental availability of such mechanical whispering gallery modes in photonic-MEMS raises questions on their structure and spectral distribution. Here we calculate the form and frequency of such vibrational surface whispering gallery modes, revealing diverse types of surface vibrations including longitudinal, transverse, and Rayleigh-type deformations. We parametrically investigate these various modes by changing their orders in the azimuthal, radial, and polar directions to reveal different vibrational structures including mechanical resonances that are localized near the interface with the environment where they can sense changes in the surroundings.

Abstract:The paper shows that silicon-based 2D photonic crystal can be a promising material for acoustooptical devices. Isotropic and anisotropic Bragg diffraction of light in photonic crystal is considered. The computational method for calculation of frequency dependences of Bragg angle is developed. A simple method of optimization of photonic crystal parameters to obtain Bragg diffraction at necessary light and sound frequency is suggested.

Abstract:This research contributes to the topology optimization of acoustic–structure interaction problems with infinite acoustic domain by focusing on two issues, namely, the variation of the acoustic–structure interface and free-floating elements. To handle the variation of the coupling interface, we divide the analyzed domain into the bounded and unbounded domains by using a virtual surface. For the bounded domain where the coupling interface may appear, we model it with the mixed displacement–pressure ( u/ p ) finite element method (mixed FEM). Then, the boundary element method (BEM) is utilized to model the non-reflecting boundary conditions on the truncated surface. The mixed FEM enables the explicit representation of the acoustic–solid interface in the optimized domain to be circumvented. By spatial variation of the mass density, shear and bulk moduli in the mixed FEM, the topology optimization procedure can be easily implemented similar to standard density approaches. With regard to the free–floating elements, we establish a connected component filter to delete these useless elements. This treatment avoids unreasonable but possibly optimized results. The proposed method is verified by several optimization examples.

Abstract:. The problem of designing a periodic interface between two different materials, which gives rise to a specified far-field diffraction pattern for a given incoming plane wave, is considered. The time harmonic waves are assumed to be TM (transverse magnetic) polarized. The diffraction problem is modeled by a generalized Helmholtz equation with transparent boundary conditions. In this paper the design problem is relaxed to include highly oscillatory profiles. Existence of an optimal design is established. The principal method is based on the theory of homogenization for the model equation.

Abstract:Mach-Zehnder and conoscopic interferometry are used to explore photoelastic properties of anisotropic crystal materials. In a number of cases an application of both techniques significantly improves an accuracy of piezooptic and photoelastic measurements. The performance of such combined approach is demonstrated on tetragonal lithium tetraborate (LTB) single crystals, as an example. Special attention is paid to methodological and metrological aspects, such as measurement accuracy and the quantitative error analysis of the resulting measurements. Performing the interferometric measurements for different geometries of piezooptic coupling the full sets of piezooptic and photoelastic tensor constants of LTB crystals have been determined. The acoustooptic efficiency, on the other hand, has been evaluated using the magnitudes of photoelastic constants derived from the piezooptical measurements. For the geometries with strong photoelastic coupling LTB demonstrates quite large acoustooptic performance with figure of merit value , $M_2$ achieving 2.12 $\times$ 10$^{-15}$ s$^3$/kg. It is several times larger than that of strontium borate crystals, nowadays the best acoustooptic material in deep ultraviolet spectral region.
