Abstract:We present an exploration of the Milky Way's structural parameters using an all-sky sample of RC giants to map the stellar density from the inner to the outer parts of the Galactic disc. These evolved giants are considered to be standard candles due to their low intrinsic variance in their absolute luminosities, allowing us to estimate their distances with reasonable confidence. We exploit all-sky photometry from the AllWISE mid-infrared survey and the Gaia survey, along with astrometry from Gaia Data Release 3 and recent 3D extinction maps, to develop a probabilistic scheme in order to select with high confidence \rc{}-like stars. Our curated catalogue contains about 10 million sources, for which we estimate photometric distances based on the WISE $W1$ photometry. We then derive the selection function for our sample, which is the combined selection function of sources with both \gaia{} and \allwise{} photometry. Using the distances and accounting for the full selection function of our observables, we are able to fit a two-disc, multi-parameter model to constrain the scale height (\hz{}), scale-length (\rd{}), flaring, and the relative mass ratios of the two disc components. We illustrate and verify our methodology using mock catalogues of \rc{} stars. We find that the \rc{} population is best described by a flared thin disc with scale length \rd{}=$3.56\pm0.32$ kpc and scale height at the Sun of \hzsun{}=$0.17\pm0.01$ kpc, and a shorter and thicker disc with \rd{}=$2.59\pm0.11$ kpc, \hzsun{}=$0.45\pm0.11$ kpc, with no flare. The thicker disc constitutes 64\% of the \rc{} stellar mass beyond 3 kpc, while the thin disk shows evidence of being warped beyond 9 kpc from the Galactic center. The residuals between the predicted number density of RC stars from our axisymmetric model and the measured counts show possible evidence of a two-armed spiral perturbation in the disc of the Milky Way.

Milky Way Tomography with K and M Dwarf Stars: the Vertical Structure of the Galactic Disk

Abstract:We use the number density distributions of K and M dwarf stars with vertical height from the Galactic disk, determined using observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, to probe the structure of the Milky Way disk across the survey's footprint. Using photometric parallax as a distance estimator we analyze a sample of several million disk stars in matching footprints above and below the Galactic plane, and we determine the location and extent of vertical asymmetries in the number counts in a variety of thin- and thick-disk subsamples in regions of some 200 square degrees within 2 kpc in vertical distance from the Galactic disk. These disk asymmetries present wave-like features as previously observed on other scales and at other distances from the Sun. We additionally explore the scale height of the disk and the implied offset of the Sun from the Galactic plane at different locations, noting that the scale height of the disk can differ significantly when measured using stars only above or only below the plane. Moreover, we compare the shape of the number density distribution in the north for different latitude ranges with a fixed range in longitude and find the shape to be sensitive to the selected latitude window. We explain why this may be indicative of a change in stellar populations in the latitude regions compared, possibly allowing access to the systematic metallicity difference between thin- and thick-disk populations through photometry.

Mapping the Milky Way Disk with Gaia DR3: 3D Extended Kinematic Maps and Rotation Curve to ≈30 kpc

Abstract:We apply a statistical deconvolution of the parallax errors based on Lucy's inversion method (LIM) to the Gaia DR3 sources to measure their 3D velocity components in the range of Galactocentric distances R between 8 and 30 kpc with their corresponding errors and rms values. We find results that are consistent with those obtained by applying LIM to the Gaia DR2 sources, and we conclude that the method gives convergent and more accurate results by improving the statistics of the data set and lowering observational errors. The kinematic maps reconstructed with LIM up to R ≈ 30 kpc show that the Milky Way is characterized by asymmetrical motions with significant gradients in all velocity components. Furthermore, we determine the Galaxy rotation curve V C (R) up to ≈27.5 kpc with the cylindrical Jeans equation assuming an axisymmetric gravitational potential. We find that V C (R) is significantly declining up to the largest radius investigated. Finally, we also measure V C (R) at different vertical heights, showing that, for R < 15 kpc, there is a marked dependence on Z, whereas at larger R the dependence on Z is negligible.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Gaia DR2 has revealed new small-scale and large-scale patterns in the phase-space distribution of stars in the Milky Way. In cylindrical Galactic coordinates $(R,\phi ,z)$, ridge-like structures can be seen in the $(R,V_\phi)$ plane and asymmetric arch-like structures in the $(V_R,V_\phi)$ plane. We show that the ridges are also clearly present when the third dimension of the $(R,V_\phi)$ plane is represented by $\langle z \rangle$, $\langle V_z \rangle$, $\langle V_R \rangle$, $\langle$[Fe/H]$\rangle$, and $\langle [\alpha /{\rm Fe}]\rangle$. The maps suggest that stars along the ridges lie preferentially close to the Galactic mid-plane ($|z|\lt 0.2$ kpc), and have metallicity and $\alpha$ elemental abundance similar to that of the Sun. We show that phase mixing of disrupting spiral arms can generate both the ridges and the arches. It also generates discrete groupings in orbital energy – the ridges and arches are simply surfaces of constant energy. We identify eight distinct ridges in the Gaia DR2 data: six of them have constant energy while two have constant angular momentum. Given that the signature is strongest for stars close to the plane, the presence of ridges in $\langle z \rangle$ and $\langle V_z \rangle$ suggests a coupling between planar and vertical directions. We demonstrate, using N-body simulations that such coupling can be generated both in isolated discs and in discs perturbed by an orbiting satellite like the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We investigate extent of the disc in both vertical and radial directions by separately analysing the density and azimuthal velocity distributions using 31116 M giant stars selected from LAMOST DR5. We first measure the metallicities, radial velocities, and the distances with precision of 0.26 dex, 5.01 km s−1, and 20.8 per cent, respectively. Then, a Bayesian method is applied to model the distributions of the outer Galaxy including components of the thin, thick discs and the halo, to obtain the scale height and azimuthal velocity distributions for the thin and thick discs as a function of galactocentric distance R. The density profile of the thin disc shows that it extends out to R ∼ 35 kpc, beyond which there are no M giant stars in the halo except for Sagittarius Stream members. By using azimuthal velocity to trace the thin disc out to 26 kpc from the Galactic Centre, we show that both the density profile and azimuthal velocity decrease with Galactocentric distance R. In both the density and azimuthal velocity distributions, there is a significant breakpoint at a galactocentric distance of R ∼ 14 kpc. The scale height distribution shows that the thin disc is significantly flared, consistent with previous works. We also find that there is no significant thick disc (as traced by M giant stars) in the outer region beyond R ∼ 15.5 kpc.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the fractal properties of the stellar medium in the solar vicinity based on the Gaia DR2 data for 200 000 stars of all spectral types at distances from 1 to 100 pc from the Sun. We consider the main stages of the development of ideas about the fractal structure in the stellar medium of galaxies. Analysis of the spatial distribution of stars is performed using by the ''mass–radius'' method. Numerical calculations show that the mean conditional local stellar density in spheres with the increasing radius with the center in the -th star is approximated by power laws, which confirms the de Vaucouleurs–Mandelbrot conclusions for fractal structures in gravitating media and indicates the presence of fractal structures in the stellar medium in the solar neighborhood with the fractal dimension . The characteristics of the fractal properties of the medium, determined from a sample of 200 000 stars, are discussed and compared with an earlier result obtained for 13 000 F and G dwarfs in the solar neighborhood according to the Geneva–Copenhagen survey.

Abstract:Context. Open clusters are convenient probes of the structure and history of the Galactic disk. They are also fundamental to stellar evolution studies. The second Gaia data release contains precise astrometry at the submilliarcsecond level and homogeneous photometry at the mmag level, that can be used to characterise a large number of clusters over the entire sky. Aims. In this study we aim to establish a list of members and derive mean parameters, in particular distances, for as many clusters as possible, making use of Gaia data alone. Methods. We compiled a list of thousands of known or putative clusters from the literature. We then applied an unsupervised membership assignment code, UPMASK, to the Gaia DR2 data contained within the fields of those clusters. Results. We obtained a list of members and cluster parameters for 1229 clusters. As expected, the youngest clusters are seen to be tightly distributed near the Galactic plane and to trace the spiral arms of the Milky Way, while older objects are more uniformly distributed, deviate further from the plane, and tend to be located at larger Galactocentric distances. Thanks to the quality of Gaia DR2 astrometry, the fully homogeneous parameters derived in this study are the most precise to date. Furthermore, we report on the serendipitous discovery of 60 new open clusters in the fields analysed during this study.

Spatial distribution of stellar populations in the Magellanic Clouds: Implementation to Gaia

Abstract:The main goal of our project is to investigate the spatial distribution of different stellar populations in the Magellanic Clouds. The results from modelling the Magellanic Clouds can be useful, among others, for simulations during the Gaia mission preparation. Isodensity contour maps have been used in order to trace the morphology of the different stellar populations and estimate the size of these structures. Moreover, star density maps are constructed through star counts and projected radial density profiles are obtained. Fitting exponential disk and King law curves to the spatial distribution allows us to derive the structural parameters that describe these profiles. The morphological structure and spatial distributions of various stellar components in the Magellanic Clouds (young and intermediate age stars, carbon stars) along with the overall spatial distribution in both Clouds are provided.

Stellar halo density with LAMOST K and M giants

Abstract:We derive the morphology of the stellar component in the outer halo volume, and search for possible overdensities due to substructures therein. We made use of some of the data releases of the spectroscopic survey LAMOST DR8-DR9 in tandem with distance determinations for two subsamples, that is, of K-giants and M-giants, respectively, making up 60\,000 stars. These distance are obtained through Bayesian techniques that derive absolute magnitudes as a function of measured spectroscopic parameters. Our calculation of the density from these catalogues requires: (1) derivation of the selection function; and (2) a correction for the convolution of the distance errors, which we carried out with Lucy's inversion of the corresponding integral equation. The stellar density distribution of the outer halo (distance to the Galactic centre, $r_G$, of between 25 and 90 kpc) is a smooth monotonously decreasing function with a dependence of approximately $ -n $, with $n=4.6 0.4$ for K-giants and $n=4.5 0.2$ for M-giants, and with a insignificant oblateness. The value of $n$ is independent of the angular distance to the Sagittarius tidal stream plane, which is what would be expected if such a stream did not exist in the anticenter positions or had a negligible imprint in the density distribution in the outer halo. Apart from random fluctuations or minor anomalies in some lines of sight, we do not see substructures superimposed in the outer halo volume within the resolution that we are using and limited by the error bars. This constrains the mass of over- and under-densities in the outer halo to be of $ 10^3$ M$_ $/deg$^2$ whereas the total mass of the stellar halo, including inner and outer parts, is $ 10^8$ M$_

Gaia DR3 data consistent with a short bar connected to a spiral arm

Abstract:We use numerical simulations to model Gaia DR3 data with the aim of constraining the Milky Way bar and spiral structure parameters. We show that both the morphology and the velocity field in Milky Way-like galactic disc models are strong functions of time, changing dramatically over a few tens of Myr. This suggests that by finding a good match to the observed radial velocity field, v_R(x,y), we can constrain the bar-spiral orientation. Incorporating uncertainties into our models is necessary to match the data; most importantly, a heliocentric distance uncertainty above 10-15% distorts the bar's shape and v_R quadrupole pattern morphology, and decreases its apparent angle with respect to the Sun-Galactocentric line. An excellent match to the Gaia DR3 v_R(x,y) field is found for a simulation with a bar length R_b\approx3.6 kpc. We argue that the data are consistent with a MW bar as short as ~3 kpc, for moderate strength inner disc spiral structure (A_2/A_0\approx0.25) or, alternatively, with a bar length up to ~5.2 kpc, provided that spiral arms are quite weak (A_2/A_0\approx0.1), and is most likely in the process of disconnecting from a spiral arm. We demonstrate that the bar angle and distance uncertainty can similarly affect the match between our models and the data - a smaller bar angle (20 deg instead of 30 deg) requires smaller distance uncertainty (20% instead of 30%) to explain the observations. Fourier components of the face-on density distribution of our models suggest that the MW does not have strong m=1 and/or m=3 spirals near the solar radius.

Survey for Distant Stellar Aggregates in Galactic Disk: Detecting Two Thousand Star Clusters and Candidates, along with the Dwarf Galaxy IC10

Abstract:Despite having data for over 10^9 stars from Gaia, only less than 10^4 star clusters and candidates have been discovered. Particularly, distant star clusters are rarely identified, due to the challenges posed by heavy extinction and great distance. However, Gaia data has continued to improve, enabling even fainter cluster members to be distinguished from field stars. In this work, we will introduce a star cluster search method based on the DBSCAN algorithm; we have made improvements to make it better suited for identifying clusters on dimmer and more distant stars. After removing member stars of known Gaia-based clusters, we have identified 2086 objects with |b|<10 deg, of which 1488 are highly reliable open star clusters, along with 569 candidates, 28 globular cluster candidates and 1 irregular galaxy IC 10 at low Galactic latitudes. We found that the proper motion of IC10 is similar yet slightly different from the water maser observations, which is an important result for the comparison with Gaia and VLBA. Besides, when compared with the star clusters appearing in Gaia DR2/EDR3, we have found nearly three times as many new objects above a distance of 5 kpc, including hundreds of them above Av > 5 mag. And it has enabled us to detect a higher number of old clusters, over a billion years old, that are difficult to detect due to observational limitations. Our findings significantly expand the remote cluster sample and enhance our understanding of the limits of Gaia DR3 data in stellar aggregates research. Photo-astrometric distances, extinctions, and astrophysical parameters for Gaia DR2 stars brighter than G = 18

Abstract:Combining the precise parallaxes and optical photometry delivered by Gaia's second data release (Gaia DR2) with the photometric catalogues of PanSTARRS-1, 2MASS, and AllWISE, we derive Bayesian stellar parameters, distances, and extinctions for 265 million stars brighter than G=18. Because of the wide wavelength range used, our results substantially improve the accuracy and precision of previous extinction and effective temperature estimates. After cleaning our results for both unreliable input and output data, we retain 137 million stars, for which we achieve a median precision of 5% in distance, 0.20 mag in V-band extinction, and 245 K in effective temperature for G<14, degrading towards fainter magnitudes (12%, 0.20 mag, and 245 K at G=16; 16%, 0.23 mag, and 260 K at G=17, respectively). We find a very good agreement with the asteroseismic surface gravities and distances of 7000 stars in the Kepler, the K2-C3, and the K2-C6 fields, with stellar parameters from the APOGEE survey, as well as with distances to star clusters. Our results are available through the ADQL query interface of the Gaia mirror at the Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam (<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://gaia.aip.de" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>) and as binary tables at <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://data.aip.de" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. As a first application, in this paper we provide distance- and extinction-corrected colour-magnitude diagrams, extinction maps as a function of distance, and extensive density maps, demonstrating the potential of our value-added dataset for mapping the three-dimensional structure of our Galaxy. In particular, we see a clear manifestation of the Galactic bar in the stellar density distributions, an observation that can almost be considered a direct imaging of the Galactic bar.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The Galactic disc is one of the main components of the Milky Way, which contributes most of the luminosity. Its structure is essential for understanding the formation and evolution of the Milky Way. Using 174 443 K-type dwarf stars observed by both Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope and Gaia Data Release 3, we study the disc density profile in the local volume within 1200 pc. In the azimuthal dimension, we find strong asymmetric signal of the thin disc. The surface density and the scale height of the southern disc significantly change versus the azimuthal angle at the same Galactocentric distance R. Meanwhile, in the vertical dimension, the scale height of the northern disc has quite different trend than that of the southern one. The scale height of the southern disc shows a decreasing trend with φ ∼ −2.5°, and change to an increasing one with φ ∼ 5.0°. Meanwhile, the scale height of the northern disc has a consistently smaller increase. Finally, we divide the entire sample into three subsamples based on metallicity and all three subsamples show significant non-axisymmetric and north–south asymmetric signals in the Galactic disc. Furthermore, we find that the scale height of the metal-poor ([Fe/H] < −0.4 dex) subsample in the northern disc is greater than that of the metal-rich ([Fe/H] > −0.1 dex) subsample. However, in the southern disc, the scale height exhibits varying relationships across different metallicity slices.

Abstract:Since the first publication of the Gaia catalogue, a new view of our Galaxy has arrived. Its astrometric and photometric information has improved the precision of the physical parameters of open star clusters obtained from them. Using the Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) catalogue, our aim was to find physical stellar members including faint stars for $370$ Galactic open clusters located within $1$ kpc. We also estimated the age, metallicity, distance modulus, and extinction of these clusters. We employed the HDBSCAN algorithm on both astrometric and photometric data to identify members in the open clusters. Subsequently, we refined the samples by eliminating outliers through the application of the Mahalanobis metric utilizing the $ distribution at a confidence level of 95 . Furthermore, we characterized the stellar parameters with the PARSEC isochrones. We obtained reliable star members for $370$ open clusters with an average parallax error of $ varpi = 0.16$ mas. We identified about $ 40 $ more stars in these clusters compared to previous work using the Gaia DR2 catalogue, including faint stars as new members with $G 17$. Before the clustering application we corrected the parallax zero-point bias to avoid spatial distribution stretching that may affect clustering results. Our membership lists include merging stars identified by HDBSCAN with astrometry and photometry. We note that the use of photometry in clustering can recover up to $10 $ more stars in the fainter limit than clustering based on astrometry only; this combined with the selection of stars filtered out by quality cuts significantly reduces the number of stars with huge $ varpi $. After clustering, we estimated age, $Z$, and $A_V$ from the photometry of the membership lists. We carried out a search to extend the membership list for $370$ open clusters mainly on the Galactic plane in a neighbourhood of $1$ kpc. Our methodology provides a robust estimator for the identification of outliers and also extends the membership lists to fainter stars in most of the clusters. Our findings suggest the need to carefully identify spurious sources that may affect clustering results.

Before the clustering application we correct the parallax zero-point bias to avoid spatial distribution stretching that may affect clustering results. Our membership lists include merging stars identified by HDBSCAN with astrometry and photometry. We note that the use of photometry in clustering can recover up to 10% more stars in the fainter limit than clustering based on astrometry only, this combined with the selection of stars filtering them out by quality cuts significantly reduces the number of stars with huge parallax error. After clustering, we estimate age, Z, and AV from the photometry of the membership lists.

Stellar Overdensity in the Local Arm in Gaia DR2

Abstract:Using the cross-matched data of Gaia DR2 and 2MASS Point Source Catalog, we investigated the surface density distribution of stars aged ~1 Gyr in the thin disk in the range of 90° <= l <= 270°. We selected 4,654 stars above the turnoff corresponding to the age ~1 Gyr, that fall within a small box region in the color-magnitude diagram, (J-Ks)0 versus M(Ks), for which the distance and reddening are corrected. The selected sample shows an arm-like overdensity at 90° <= l <= 190°.This overdensity is located close to the Local arm traced by high-mass star forming regions (HMSFRs), but its pitch angle is slightly larger than that of the HMSFR-defined arm. Although the significance of the overdensity we report is marginal, its structure poses questions concerning both of the competing scenarios of spiral arms, the density-wave theory and the dynamic spiral arm model. The offset between the arms traced by stars and HMSFRs, i.e., gas, is difficult to be explained by the dynamic arm scenario. On the other hand, the pitch angle of the stellar Local arm, if confirmed, larger than that of the Perseus arm is difficult to be explained with the classical density-wave scenario. The dynamic arm scenario can explain it if the Local arm is in a growing up phase, while the Perseus arm is in a disrupting phase. Our result provides a new and complex picture of the Galactic spiral arms, and encourages further studies.

The Milky Way's Stellar Disk

Abstract:A suite of vast stellar surveys mapping the Milky Way, culminating in the Gaia mission, is revolutionizing the empirical information about the distribution and properties of stars in the Galactic stellar disk. We review and lay out what analysis and modeling machinery needs to be in place to test mechanisms of disk galaxy evolution and to stringently constrain the Galactic gravitational potential, using such Galactic star-by-star measurements. We stress the crucial role of stellar survey selection functions in any such modeling; and we advocate the utility of viewing the Galactic stellar disk as made up from `mono-abundance populations' (MAPs), both for dynamical modeling and for constraining the Milky Way's evolutionary processes. We review recent work on the spatial and kinematical distribution of MAPs, and lay out how further study of MAPs in the Gaia era should lead to a decisively clearer picture of the Milky Way's dark matter distribution and formation history.

Abstract:Under the assumption of a simple and time-invariant gravitational potential, many Galactic dynamics techniques infer the Milky Way's mass and dark matter distribution from stellar kinematic observations. These methods typically rely on parameterized potential models of the Galaxy and must take into account non-trivial survey selection effects, because they make use of the density of stars in phase space. Large-scale spectroscopic surveys now supply information beyond kinematics in the form of precise stellar label measurements (especially element abundances). These element abundances are known to correlate with orbital actions or other dynamical invariants. Here, we use the Orbital Torus Imaging (OTI) framework that uses abundance gradients in phase space to map orbits. In many cases these gradients can be measured without detailed knowledge of the selection function. We use stellar surface abundances from the APOGEE survey combined with kinematic data from the Gaia mission. Our method reveals the vertical ($z$-direction) orbit structure in the Galaxy and enables empirical measurements of the vertical acceleration field and orbital frequencies in the disk. From these measurements, we infer the total surface mass density, $\Sigma$, and midplane volume density, $\rho_0$, as a function of Galactocentric radius and height. Around the Sun, we find $\Sigma_{\odot}(z=1.1$ kpc)$=72^{+6}_{-9}$M$_{\odot}$pc$^{-2}$ and $\rho_{\odot}(z=0)=0.081^{+0.015}_{-0.009}$ M$_{\odot}$pc$^{-3}$ using the most constraining abundance ratio, [Mg/Fe]. This corresponds to a dark matter contribution in surface density of $\Sigma_{\odot,\mathrm{DM}}(z=1.1$ kpc)$=24\pm4$ M$_{\odot}$pc$^{-2}$, and in total volume mass density of $\rho_{\odot,\mathrm{DM}}(z=0)=0.011\pm0.002$ M$_{\odot}$pc$^{-3}$. Moreover, using these mass density values we estimate the scale length of the low-$\alpha$ disc to be $h_R=2.24\pm0.06$kpc.

Abstract:Abstract Starting from the Gaia DR3 HR diagram, we derive the star formation history (SFH) as a function of distance from the Galactic Plane within a cylinder centred on the Sun with a 200 pc radius and spanning 1.3 kpc above and below the Galaxy’s midplane. We quantify both the concentration of the more recent star formation in the Galactic Plane, and the age-related increase in the scale height of the Galactic Disc stellar component, which is well-described by power-laws with indices ranging from 1/2 to 2/3. The vertically-integrated star formation rate falls from (1.147 ± 0.039) × 10−8 M⊙yr−1pc−2 at earlier times down to (6.2 ± 3.0) × 10−9 M⊙yr−1pc−2 at present times, but we find a significant peak of star formation in the 2 to 3 Gyr age bin. The total mass of stars formed per unit area over time is 118.7 ± 6.2 M⊙pc−2, which is nearly twice the present stellar mass derived from kinematics within 1 kpc from the Galactic Plane, implying a high degree of matter recycling in successive generations of stars. The method is then modified by adopting an age-dependent correlation between the SFH across the different slices, which results in less noisy and more symmetrical results without significantly changing the previously mentioned quantities. This appears to be a promising way to improve SFH recovery in external galaxies.
