Abstract:This chapter provides a phenomenological appraisal of the high-energy emission of millisecond pulsars. We comment on some of their properties as a population, as well as consider the especial cases of transitional pulsars, other redbacks, and black widow systems.

Abstract:We have monitored a large sample of millisecond pulsars using the 100-m Effelsberg radio telescope in order to compare their radio emission properties to the slowly rotating population. With some notable exceptions, our findings suggest that the two groups of objects share many common properties. A comparison of the spectral indices between samples of normal and millisecond pulsars demonstrates that millisecond pulsar spectra are not significantly different from those of normal pulsars. There is evidence, however, that millisecond pulsars are slightly less luminous and less efficient radio emitters compared to normal pulsars. We confirm recent suggestions that a diversity exists among the luminosities of millisecond pulsars with the isolated millisecond pulsars being less luminous than the binary millisecond pulsars. There are indications that old millisecond pulsars exhibit somewhat flatter spectra than the presumably younger ones. We present evidence that millisecond pulsar profiles are only marginally more complex than those found among the normal pulsar population. Moreover, the development of the profiles with frequency is rather slow, suggesting very compact magnetospheres. The profile development seems to anti-correlate with the companion mass and the spin period, again suggesting that the amount of mass transfer in a binary system might directly influence the emission properties. The angular radius of radio beams of millisecond pulsars does not follow the scaling predicted from a canonical pulsar model which is applicable for normal pulsars. Instead they are systematically smaller. The smaller inferred luminosity and narrower emission beams will need to be considered in future calculations of the birth-rate of the Galactic population.

Abstract:Transitional millisecond pulsars are an emerging class of sources that link low-mass X-ray binaries to millisecond radio pulsars in binary systems. These pulsars alternate between a radio pulsar state and an active low-luminosity X-ray disc state. During the active state, these sources exhibit two distinct emission modes (high and low) that alternate unpredictably, abruptly, and incessantly. X-ray to optical pulsations are observed only during the high mode. The root cause of this puzzling behaviour remains elusive. This paper presents the results of the most extensive multi-wavelength campaign ever conducted on the transitional pulsar prototype, PSR J1023+0038, covering from the radio to X-rays. The campaign was carried out over two nights in June 2021 and involved 12 different telescopes and instruments, including XMM-Newton, HST, VLT/FORS2 (in polarimetric mode), ALMA, VLA, and FAST. By modelling the broadband spectral energy distributions in both emission modes, we show that the mode switches are caused by changes in the innermost region of the accretion disc. These changes trigger the emission of discrete mass ejections, which occur on top of a compact jet, as testified by the detection of at least one short-duration millimetre flare with ALMA at the high-to-low mode switch. The pulsar is subsequently re-enshrouded, completing our picture of the mode switches.

Abstract:The launch of several sensitive X-ray and gamma-ray instruments during the last decade heralded a new era in the research of millisecond pulsars. The current number of millisecond pulsars detected in the X-ray spectral window is about 30, including those located in globular clusters, which represents a significant fraction of the total number of spin-down powered pulsars emitting high-energy <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://radiation.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> this paper the observational X/gamma-ray status is reported for a subset of X-ray emitting millisecond pulsars which show high-energy tails: PSR B1821-24, PSR J0218+4232 and PSR B1937+21. The prospects for future detection of these 3 millisecond pulsars at soft (INTEGRAL) and hard (AGILE/GLAST) gamma-rays are discussed.

Abstract:I present an observational review of the five accretion-driven millisecond X-ray pulsars currently known, focusing on the results obtained with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite. A prominent place in this review is given to the first such system discovered, SAX J1808.4-3658. Currently four outbursts have been detected from this source, three of which have been studied using RXTE. This makes this source the best studied example of all accretion-driven millisecond pulsars. Its October 2002 outburst is of particular interest because of the discovery of kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations and burst oscillations during its thermonuclear X-ray bursts. The other four accreting millisecond pulsars were discovered within the last two years and only limited results have been published so far. Millisecond pulsars phenomenology under the light of graph theory

Abstract:We compute and apply the minimum spanning tree (MST) of the binary millisecond pulsar population, and discuss aspects of the known phenomenology of these systems in this context. We find that the MST effectively separates different classes of spider pulsars, eclipsing radio pulsars in tight binary systems either with a companion with a mass in the range of approximately 0.1-0.8 solar masses (redbacks) or with a companion of less than or approximately 0.06 solar masses (black widows), into distinct branches. The MST also separates black widows located in globular clusters from those found in the field and groups other pulsar classes of interest, including transitional millisecond pulsars. Using the MST and a defined ranking for similarity, we identify possible candidates likely to belong to these pulsar classes. In particular, based on this approach, we propose the black widows' classification of J1300+1240, J1630+3550, J1317-0157, J1221-0633, J1627+3219, J1737-0314A, and J1701-3006F, discuss that of J1908+2105, and analyze J1723-2837, J1431-4715, and J1902-5105 as possible transitional systems. We introduce an algorithm that quickly locates where new pulsars fall within the MST and use this to examine the positions of the transitional millisecond pulsar IGR J18245-2452 (PSR J1824-2452I), the transitional millisecond pulsar candidate 3FGL J1544.6-1125, and the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658. Assessing the positions of these sources in the MST assuming a range for their unknown variables (e.g., the spin period derivative of PSR J1824-2452I) we can effectively narrow down the parameter space necessary for searching and determining key pulsar parameters through targeted observations.

Abstract:We review the main properties, demographics and applications of binary and millisecond radio pulsars. Our knowledge of these exciting objects has greatly increased in recent years, mainly due to successful surveys which have brought the known pulsar population to over 1700. There are now 80 binary and millisecond pulsars associated with the disk of our Galaxy, and a further 103 pulsars in 24 of the Galactic globular clusters. Recent highlights have been the discovery of the first ever double pulsar system and a recent flurry of discoveries in globular clusters, in particular Terzan 5.

Abstract:PSR J2032+4127 is a radio-loud gamma-ray-emitting pulsar; it is orbiting around a high-mass Be type star with a very long orbital period of 25-50years, and is approaching periastron, which will occur in late 2017/early 2018. This system comprises with a young pulsar and a Be type star, which is similar to the so-called gamma-ray binary PSR~B1259-63/LS2883. It is expected therefore that PSR J2032+4127 shows an enhancement of high-energy emission caused by the interaction between the pulsar wind and Be wind/disk around periastron. Ho et al. recently reported a rapid increase in the X-ray flux from this system. In this paper, we also confirm a rapid increase in the X-ray flux along the orbit, while the GeV flux shows no significant change. We discuss the high-energy emissions from the shock caused by the pulsar wind and stellar wind interaction and examine the properties of the pulsar wind in this binary system. We argue that the rate of increase of the X-ray flux observed by Swift indicates (1) a variation of the momentum ratio of the two-wind interaction region along the orbit, or (2) an evolution of the magnetization parameter of the pulsar wind with the radial distance from the pulsar. We also discuss the pulsar wind/Be disk interaction at the periastron passage, and propose the possibility of formation of an accretion disk around the pulsar. We model high-energy emissions through the inverse-Compton scattering process of the cold-relativistic pulsar wind off soft photons from the accretion disk.

Radio and Gamma-ray Pulsed Emission from Millisecond Pulsars

Abstract:Pulsed gamma-ray emission from millisecond pulsars (MSPs) has been detected by the sensitive Fermi, which sheds light on studies of the emission region and mechanism. In particular, the specific patterns of radio and gamma-ray emission from PSR J0101-6422 challenge the popular pulsar models, e.g. outer gap and two-pole caustic (TPC) models. Using the three dimension (3D) annular gap model, we have jointly simulated radio and gamma-ray light curves for three representative MSPs (PSR J0034-0534, PSR J0101-6422 and PSR J0437-4715) with distinct radio phase lags and present the best simulated results for these MSPs, particularly for PSR J0101-6422 with complex radio and gamma-ray pulse profiles and for PSR J0437-4715 with a radio interpulse. It is found that both the gamma-ray and radio emission originate from the annular gap region located in only one magnetic pole, and the radio emission region is not primarily lower than the gamma-ray region in most cases. In addition, the annular gap model with a small magnetic inclination angle instead of "orthogonal rotator" can account for MSPs' radio interpulse with a large phase separation from the main pulse. The annular gap model is a self-consistent model not only for young pulsars but also MSPs, and multi-wavelength light curves can be fundamentally explained by this model.
High-energy emission from pulsars in polar-cap models with CR-induced cascades

Abstract:For a subclass of polar-cap models based on electromagnetic cascades induced by curvature radiation (CR) we calculate broad-band high-energy spectra of pulsed emission expected for classical and millisecond pulsars. The spectra are a combination of curvature and synchrotron components. The spectrum of curvature component breaks at 150MeV, and neither its slope nor level below this energy are compatible with phase-averaged spectra of pulsed X-ray emission inferred from observations. Spectral properties in the combined energy range of ROSAT and ASCA (0.1 - 10 keV) depend upon the location of cyclotron turnover energy epsilon_ct=\hbar{e B \over m_e c} /sin(psi) in the synchrotron component. Unlike in outer-gap models, the available range of pitch angles psi is rather narrow and confined to low values. For classical pulsars, a gradual turnover begins already at 1MeV, and the level of the synchrotron spectrum decreases. At 10keV the curvature component eventually takes over, but with photon index alpha = 2/3, in disagreement with observations. For millisecond pulsars, the X-ray spectra are dominated by synchrotron component with alpha \simeq 1.5, and a sharp turnover into alpha \simeq -1 at epsilon_ct \sim 100eV. Relations of pulsed luminosity L_X to spin-down luminosity \edot are presented for classical and millisecond pulsars. We conclude that spectral properties and fluxes of pulsed non-thermal X-ray emission of some objects, like the Crab or the millisecond pulsar B1821-24, pose a challenge to the subclass of polar-cap models based on curvature and synchrotron radiation alone.
Discovery of the Optical Counterparts to Four Energetic Fermi Millisecond Pulsars

Abstract:In the last few years, over 43 millisecond radio pulsars have been discovered by targeted searches of unidentified gamma-ray sources found by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. A large fraction of these millisecond pulsars are in compact binaries with low-mass companions. These systems often show eclipses of the pulsar signal and are commonly known as black widows and redbacks because the pulsar is gradually destroying its companion. In this paper, we report on the optical discovery of four strongly irradiated millisecond pulsar companions. All four sources show modulations of their color and luminosity at the known orbital periods from radio timing. Light curve modelling of our exploratory data shows that the equilibrium temperature reached on the companion's dayside with respect to their nightside is consistent with about 10-30% of the available spin-down energy from the pulsar being reprocessed to increase the companion's dayside temperature. This value compares well with the range observed in other irradiated pulsar binaries and offers insights about the energetics of the pulsar wind and the production of gamma-ray emission. In addition, this provides a simple way of estimating the brightness of irradiated pulsar companions given the pulsar spin-down luminosity. Our analysis also suggests that two of the four new irradiated pulsar companions are only partially filling their Roche lobe. Some of these sources are relatively bright and represent good targets for spectroscopic follow-up. These measurements could enable, among other things, mass determination of the neutron stars in these systems.

X-rays from Radio Millisecond Pulsars: Comptonized Thermal Radiation

Abstract:X-ray emission from many rotation-powered millisecond pulsars (MSPs) is observed to be of predominantly thermal nature. In PSR J0437--4715, the nearest MSP known, an additional faint power-law tail is observed above 2.5 keV, commonly attributed to non-thermal magnetospheric radiation. We propose that the hard emission in this and other similar MSPs is instead due to weak Comptonization of the thermal (blackbody or hydrogen atmosphere) polar cap emission by energetic electrons/positrons of small optical depth in the pulsar magnetosphere. This spectral model implies that all soft X-rays are of purely thermal origin, which has profound implications in the study of neutron star structure and fundamental pulsar physics.

Binary Pulsar Shock Emissions as Galactic Gamma-Ray Sources

Abstract:We address several issues regarding the interpretation of galactic \ggg-ray sources. We consider powerful pulsars in binaries producing X-ray and gamma-ray {\it unpulsed} emission from the shock interaction of relativistic pulsar winds with circumbinary material. Nebular mass outflows from companion stars of binary pulsars can provide the right {\it calorimeters} to transform a fraction of the electromagnetic and kinetic energy of pulsar winds into high energy radiation. We discuss the physics of interaction of relativistic pulsar winds with gaseous material and show that the conditions in pulsar binary systems might be ideal to constrain shock acceleration mechanisms and pulsar wind composition and structure. We briefly discuss the example of the 47~ms pulsar PSR~1259-63 orbiting around a massive Be~star companion and monitored by X-ray and gamma-ray instruments during its recent periastron passage. In addition to young pulsars in massive binaries, also a class of recycled millisecond pulsars in low-mass binaries can be interesting high energy emitters.

Abstract:Soft phase lags, in which X-ray pulses in lower energy bands arrive later than pulses in higher energy bands, have been observed in nearly all accretion-powered millisecond pulsars, but their origin remains an open question. In a study of the 2.5 ms accretion-powered pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658, we report that the magnitude of these lags is strongly dependent on the accretion rate. During the brightest stage of the outbursts from this source, the lags increase in magnitude as the accretion rate drops; when the outbursts enter their dimmer flaring-tail stage, the relationship reverses. We evaluate this complex dependence in the context of two theoretical models for the lags, one relying on the scattering of photons by the accretion disk and the other invoking a two-component model for the photon emission. In both cases, the turnover suggests that we are observing the source transitioning into the "propeller" accretion regime.

Abstract:We discuss a general mechanism which allows to explain naturally both radio and high energy emission by pulsars. We also discuss the plasma distribution in the region surrounding the pulsar, the pulsar wind and the formation of jet along the magnetic axis. We suggest a plausible mechanism to generate pulsar proper motion velocities.

Abstract:We present X-ray observations of the "redback" eclipsing radio millisecond pulsar and candidate radio pulsar/X-ray binary transition object PSR J1723-2837. The X-ray emission from the system is predominantly non-thermal and exhibits pronounced variability as a function of orbital phase, with a factor of ~2 reduction in brightness around superior conjunction. Such temporal behavior appears to be a defining characteristic of this variety of peculiar millisecond pulsar binaries and is likely caused by a partial geometric occultation by the main-sequence-like companion of a shock within the binary. There is no indication of diffuse X-ray emission from a bow shock or pulsar wind nebula associated with the pulsar. We also report on a search for point source emission and $\gamma$-ray pulsations in Fermi Large Area Telescope data using a likelihood analysis and photon probability weighting. Although PSR J1723-2837 is consistent with being a $\gamma$-ray point source, due to the strong Galactic diffuse emission at its position a definitive association cannot be established. No statistically significant pulsations or modulation at the orbital period are detected. For a presumed source detection, the implied $\gamma$-ray luminosity is $\lesssim$5% of its spin-down power. This indicates that PSR J1723-2837 is either one of the least efficient $\gamma$-ray producing millisecond pulsars or, if the detection is spurious, the $\gamma$-ray emission pattern is not directed towards us.

Time-dependent modeling of TeV-detected, young pulsar wind nebulae

Abstract:The increasing sensitivity of instruments at X-ray and TeV energies have revealed a large number of nebulae associated with bright pulsars. Despite this large data set, the observed pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) do not show a uniform behavior and the main parameters driving features like luminosity, magnetization, and others are still not fully understood. To evaluate the possible existence of common evolutive trends and to link the characteristics of the nebula emission with those of the powering pulsar, we selected a sub-set of 10 TeV detections which are likely ascribed to young PWNe and model the spectral energy distribution with a time-dependent description of the nebulae's electron population. In 9 of these cases, a detailed PWNe model, using up-to-date multiwavelength information, is presented. The best-fit parameters of these nebula are discussed, together with the pulsar characteristics. We conclude that TeV PWNe are particle-dominated objects with large multiplicities, in general far from magnetic equipartition, and that relatively large photon field enhancements are required to explain the high level of Comptonized photons observed. We do not find significant correlations between the efficiencies of emission at different frequencies and the magnetization. The injection parameters do not appear to be particularly correlated with the pulsar properties either. We find that a normalized comparison of the SEDs (e.g., with the corresponding spin-down flux) at the same age significantly reduces the spectral distributions dispersion.

Pulse Profiles of Accreting Neutron Stars from GRMHD Simulations

Abstract:The pulsed X-ray emission from the neutron star surface acts as a window to study the state of matter in the neutron star interior. For accreting millisecond pulsars, the surface X-ray emission is generated from the `hotspots', which are formed as a result of magnetically channeled accretion flow hitting the stellar surface. The emission from these hotspots is modulated by stellar rotation giving rise to pulsations. Using global three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of the star-disk system, we investigate the accretion hotspots and the corresponding X-ray pulse properties of accreting millisecond pulsars with dipolar magnetic fields. The accretion spot morphologies in our simulations are entirely determined by the accretion columns and vary as a function of the stellar magnetic inclination. For lower inclinations, the hotspots are shaped like crescents around the magnetic axis. As we increase the inclination angle, the crescents transform into elongated bars close to the magnetic pole. We model the X-ray pulses resulting from the accretion hotspots using general-relativistic ray tracing calculations and quantify the root mean square variability of the pulsed signal. The pulse amplitudes obtained from our simulations usually range between 1 - 12% rms and are consistent with the values observed in accreting millisecond pulsars. We find that the turbulent accretion flow in the GRMHD simulations introduces significant broadband variability on a timescale similar to the stellar rotational period. We also explore the impact of electron scattering absorption and show that, along with being a key factor in determining the pulse characteristics, this also introduces significant additional variability and higher harmonics in the bolometric light curve of the accreting sources.

Pulse Profiles, Spectra and Polarization Characteristics of Non-Thermal Emissions from the Crab-Like Pulsars

Abstract:We discuss non-thermal emission mechanism of the Crab-like pulsars with both a two-dimensional electrodynamical study and a three-dimensional model. We investigate the emission process in the outer gap accelerator. In the two-dimensional electrodynamical study, we solve the Poisson equation of the accelerating electric field in the outer gap and the equation of motion of the primary particles with the synchrotron and the curvature radiation process and the pair-creation process. We show a solved gap structure which produces a consistent gamma-ray spectrum with EGRET observation. Based on the two-dimensional model, we conduct a three-dimensional emission model to calculate the synchrotron and the inverse-Compton processes of the secondary pairs produced outside the outer gap. We calculate the pulse profiles, the phase-resolved spectra and the polarization characteristics in optical to $\gamma$-ray bands to compare the observation of the Crab pulsar and PSR B0540-69. For the Crab pulsar, we find that the outer gap geometry extending from near the stellar surface to near the light cylinder produces a complex morphology change of the pulse profiles as a function of the photon energy. This predicted morphology change is quite similar with that of the observations. The calculated phase-resolved spectra are consistent with the data through optical to the $\gamma$-ray bands. We demonstrate that the 10$\sim$20 % of the polarization degree in the optical emissions from the Crab pulsar and the Vela pulsar are explained by the synchrotron emissions with the particle gyration motion.

Abstract:We investigated the multiband emission from the pulsar binaries XSS J12270-4859, PSR J2039-5617, and PSR J2339-0533, which exhibit orbital modulation in the X-ray and gamma-ray bands. We constructed the sources' broadband spectral energy distributions and multiband orbital light curves by supplementing our X-ray measurements with published gamma-ray results, and we modeled the data using intra-binary shock (IBS) scenarios. While the X-ray data were well explained by synchrotron emission from electrons/positrons in the IBS, the gamma-ray data were difficult to explain with the IBS components alone. Therefore, we explored other scenarios that had been suggested for gamma-ray emission from pulsar binaries: (1) inverse-Compton emission in the upstream unshocked wind zone and (2) synchrotron radiation from electrons/positrons interacting with a kilogauss magnetic field of the companion. Scenario (1) requires that the bulk motion of the wind substantially decelerates to ~1000km/s before reaching the IBS for increased residence time, in which case formation of a strong shock is untenable, inconsistent with the X-ray phenomenology. Scenario (2) can explain the data if we assume the presence of electrons/positrons with a Lorentz factor of ~$10^8$ (~0.1 PeV) that pass through the IBS and tap a substantial portion of the pulsar voltage drop. These findings raise the possibility that the orbitally-modulating gamma-ray signals from pulsar binaries can provide insights into the flow structure and energy conversion within pulsar winds and particle acceleration nearing PeV energies in pulsars. These signals may also yield greater understanding of kilogauss magnetic fields potentially hosted by the low-mass stars in these systems.

Abstract:Rotation-powered millisecond radio pulsars have been spun up to their present spin period by a $10^8$ - $10^9$ yr long X-ray-bright phase of accretion of matter and angular momentum in a low-to-intermediate mass binary system. Recently, the discovery of transitional pulsars that alternate cyclically between accretion and rotation-powered states on time scales of a few years or shorter, has demonstrated this evolutionary scenario. Here, we present a thorough statistical analysis of the spin distributions of the various classes of millisecond pulsars to assess the evolution of their spin period between the different stages. Accreting sources that showed oscillations exclusively during thermonuclear type I X-ray bursts (nuclear-powered millisecond pulsars) are found to be significantly faster than rotation-powered sources, while accreting sources that possess a magnetosphere and show coherent pulsations (accreting millisecond pulsars) are not. On the other hand, if accreting millisecond pulsars and eclipsing rotation-powered millisecond pulsars form a common class of transitional pulsars, these are shown to have a spin distribution intermediate between the faster nuclear-powered millisecond pulsars and the slower non-eclipsing rotation-powered millisecond pulsars. We interpret these findings in terms of a spin-down due to the decreasing mass-accretion rate during the latest stages of the accretion phase, and in terms of the different orbital evolutionary channels mapped by the various classes of pulsars. We summarize possible instrumental selection effects, showing that even if an unbiased sample of pulsars is still lacking, their influence on the results of the presented analysis is reduced by recent improvements in instrumentation and searching techniques.
