Abstract:Extriangulated categories axiomatize extension-closed subcategories of triangulated categories. We show that the homotopy category of an exact quasi-category can be equipped with a natural extriangulated structure.

Abstract:Extriangulated categories axiomatize extension-closed subcategories of triangulated categories and generalise both exact categories and triangulated categories. This survey article presents three applications of extriangulated categories to homotopical algebra, algebraic combinatorics and representation theory. The first shows that, via some generalised Hovey's correspondence, extriangulated categories easily give rise to model category structures with triangulated homotopy categories. As a second application, extriangulated structures play a fondamental role in the construction of polytopal realisations of $g$-vector fans. This allows for a generalisation of ABHY's construction appearing in the study of scattering amplitudes in theoretical physics. Lastly, extriangulated categories provide a convenient framework for studying mutations in representation theory and flips in algebraic combinatorics. In nice enough hereditary extriangulated categories, there is a well-behaved theory of mutation for silting objects, which encompass cluster tilting, two-term silting, relative tilting, mutation of maximal almost-rigid modules, flip of dissections and mutation of intermediate co-$t$-structures.

Abstract:Extriangulated categories were introduced by Nakaoka and Palu by extracting the similarities between exact categories and triangulated categories. A notion of mutation of subcategories in an extriangulated category is defined in this paper. Let A be an extension closed subcategory of an extriangulated category C. Then the additive quotient category M:=A/[X] carries naturally a triangulated structure whenever (A,A) forms an X-mutation pair. This result generalizes many results of the same type for triangulated categories. It is used to give a classification of thick triangulated subcategories of pre-triangulated category C/[X], where X is functorially finite in C. When C has Auslander–Reiten translation τ, we prove that for a functorially finite subcategory X of C containing projectives and injectives, the quotient C/[X] is a triangulated category if and only if (C,C) is X-mutation, and if and only if τX_=X‾. This generalizes a result by Jørgensen who proved the equivalence between the first and the third conditions for triangulated categories. Furthermore, we show that for such a subcategory X of the extriangulated category C, C admits a new extriangulated structure such that C is a Frobenius extriangulated category. Applications to exact categories and triangulated categories are given. From the applications we present extriangulated categories which are neither exact categories nor triangulated categories.

Abstract:Extriangulated categories were introduced by Nakaoka and Palu, which is a simultaneous generalization of exact categories and triangulated categories. Axiom (ET4) for extriangulated categories is an analogue of octahedron axiom (TR4) for triangulated categories. In this paper, we use homotopy cartesian squares in pre-extriangulated categories to investigate axiom (ET4). We provide several equivalent statements of axiom (ET4) and find out conditions under which the axiom is self-dual.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to develop a framework for localization theory of triangulated categories , that is, from a given extension-closed subcategory of , we construct a natural extriangulated structure on together with an exact functor satisfying a suitable universality, which unifies several phenomena. Precisely, a given subcategory is thick if and only if the localization corresponds to a triangulated category. In this case, Q is nothing other than the usual Verdier quotient. Furthermore, it is revealed that is an exact category if and only if satisfies a generating condition . Such an (abelian) exact localization provides a good understanding of some cohomological functors , e.g., the heart of t -structures on and the abelian quotient of by a cluster-tilting subcategory .

Abstract:Let $(\mathcal{C},\mathbb{E},\mathfrak{s})$ be an extriangulated category with a proper class $\xi$ of $\mathbb{E}$-triangles. In this paper, we first introduce the $\xi$-Gorenstein cohomology in terms of $\xi$-$\mathcal{G}$projective resolutions and $\xi$-$\mathcal{G}$injective coresolutions, respectively, and then we get the balance of $\xi$-Gorenstein cohomology. Moreover, we study the interplay among $\xi$-cohomology, $\xi$-Gorenstein cohomology and $\xi$-complete cohomology, and obtain the Avramov-Martsinkovsky type exact sequences in this setting.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of exact dg category, which provides a differential graded enhancement of Nakaoka--Palu's notion of extriangulated category. We give a definition in complete analogy with Quillen's but where the category of kernel-cokernel pairs is replaced with a more sophisticated homotopy category. We introduce the notion of stable dg category, and prove that the $H^0$-category of an exact dg category $\mathcal{A}$ is triangulated if and only if $\mathcal{A}$ is stable. We illustrate our theory with several examples including the homotopy category of two-term complexes and Amiot's fundamental domain for generalized cluster categories.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a common framework for constructing triangulated quotient categories from extriangulated categories.To be precise, assume that X and A, where X ⊆ A, are two subcategories of an extriangulated category C satisfying certain conditions.Then A/[X ] is a triangulated category.This result unifies a result by Iyama and Wemyss (2013) for triangulated categories and a result by Zhou and Zhu (2018) for extriangulated categories.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of homological systems $\Theta$ for triangulated categories. Homological systems generalize, on one hand, the notion of stratifying systems in module categories, and on the other hand, the notion of exceptional sequences in triangulated categories. We prove that, attached to the homological system $\Theta,$ there are two standardly stratified algebras $A$ and $B,$ which are derived equivalent. Furthermore, it is proved that the category $\F(\Theta),$ of the $\Theta$-filtered objects in a triangulated category $\T,$ admits in a very natural way an structure of an exact category, and then there are exact equivalences between the exact category $\F(\Theta)$ and the exact categories of the $\Delta$-good modules associated to the standardly stratified algebras $A$ and $B.$ Some of the obtained results can be seen also under the light of the cotorsion pairs in the sense of Iyama-Nakaoka-Yoshino (see \ref{CotorsionThetaSys1} and \ref{CotorsionThetaSys2}). We recall that cotorsion pairs are studied extensively in relation with cluster tilting categories, $t$-structures and co-$t$-structures.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of an exact dg category, which is a simultaneous generalization of the notions of exact category in the sense of Quillen and of pretriangulated dg category in the sense of Bondal--Kapranov. It is also a differential graded analogue of Barwick's notion of exact $\infty$-category and a differential graded enhancement of Nakaoka--Palu's notion of extriangulated category. It is completely different from Positselski's notion of exact DG-category. Our motivations come for example from the categories appearing in the additive categorification of cluster algebras with coefficients. We give a definition in complete analogy with Quillen's but where the category of kernel-cokernel pairs is replaced with a more sophisticated homotopy category. We obtain a number of fundamental results concerning the dg nerve, the dg derived category, tensor products and functor categories with exact dg target. For example, we show that for a given dg category $\mathcal{A}$ with additive homotopy category $H^0(\mathcal{A})$, there is a bijection between exact structures on $\mathcal{A}$ and exact structures (in the sense of Barwick) on the dg nerve of $\mathcal{A}$. We also show the existence of the greatest exact structure on a (small) dg category with additive homotopy category. This generalizes a theorem of Rump for Quillen exact categories.

Abstract:Let $(\mathcal{C},\mathbb{E},\mathfrak{s})$ be an extriangulated category with a proper class $\xi$ of $\mathbb{E}$-triangles. In this paper, we study the balance of complete cohomology in $(\mathcal{C},\mathbb{E},\mathfrak{s})$, which is motivated by a result of Nucinkis that complete cohomology of modules is not balanced in the way the absolute cohomology Ext is balanced. As an application, we give some criteria for identifying a triangulated catgory to be Gorenstein and an artin algebra to be $F$-Gorenstein.

Abstract:Extriangulated categories were introduced by Nakaoka and Palu to give a unification of properties in exact categories and triangulated categories. We consider in this article the Grothendieck group K-0(C) of an extriangulated category C. We show that a locally finite extriangulated category Calways has almost split extensions and in this case the relations of the Grothendieck group K-0(C) are generated by the AuslanderRieten E-triangles. We give a partial converse result when restricting to the triangulated categories with a cluster tilting subcategory: in the triangulated category with a cluster tilting subcategory, the relations of the Grothendieck group are generated by AR-triangles if and only if the triangulated category is locally finite. We also show that there is a one-toone correspondence between subgroups of K-0(C) containing the image of G and dense G-(co)resolving subcategories of Cw here Ga generator of C, which generalizes results about classifying subcategories of a triangulated or exact category C by subgroups of K-0(C). Abstract:Extriangulated categories were introduced by Nakaoka and Palu to give a unification of properties in exact categories and extension-closed subcategories of triangulated categories. A notion of tilting pairs in an extriangulated category is introduced in this paper. We give a Bazzoni characterization of tilting pairs in this setting. We also obtain Auslander-Reiten correspondence of tilting pairs which classifies finite $\mathcal{C}$-tilting subcategories for a certain self-orthogonal subcategory $\mathcal{C}$ with some assumptions. This generalizes the known results given by Wei and Xi for the categories of finitely generated modules over Artin algebras, thereby providing new insights in exact and triangulated categories.

Gluing Approximable Triangulated Categories

Abstract:Given a bounded-above cochain complex of modules over a ring, it is standard to replace it by a projective resolution, and it is classical that doing so can be very useful. Recently, a modified version of this was introduced in triangulated categories other than the derived category of a ring. A triangulated category is approximable if this modified procedure is possible. Not surprisingly this has proved a powerful tool. For example: the fact that the derived category of a quasi compact, separated scheme is approximable has led to major improvements on old theorems due to Bondal, Van den Bergh and Rouquier. In this article we prove that, under weak hypotheses, the recollement of two approximable triangulated categories is approximable. In particular, this shows many of the triangulated categories that arise in noncommutative algebraic geometry are approximable. Furthermore, the lemmas and techniques developed in this article form a powerful toolbox which has interesting applications in existing and forthcoming work by the authors.

Galois theory and homology in quasi-abelian functor categories

Abstract:Given a finite category T, we consider the functor category [T,A], where A can in particular be any quasi-abelian category. Examples of quasi-abelian categories are given by any abelian category but also by non-exact additive categories as the categories of torsion(-free) abelian groups, topological abelian groups, locally compact abelian groups, Banach spaces and Fréchet spaces. In this situation, the categories of various internal categorical structures in A, such as the categories of internal n-fold groupoids, are equivalent to functor categories [T,A] for a suitable category T. For a replete full subcategory S of T, we define F to be the full subcategory of [T,A] whose objects are given by the functors G with G(X)=0 for all objects X not in S. We prove that F is a torsion-free Birkhoff subcategory of [T,A]. This allows us to study (higher) central extensions from categorical Galois theory in [T,A] with respect to F and generalized Hopf formulae for homology.

A resolution theorem for extriangulated categories with applications to the index

Abstract:Quillen's Resolution Theorem in algebraic $K$-theory provides a powerful computational tool for calculating $K$-groups of exact categories. At the level of $K_0$, this result goes back to Grothendieck. In this article, we first establish an extriangulated version of Grothendieck's Resolution Theorem. Second, we use this Extriangulated Resolution Theorem to gain new insight into the index theory of triangulated categories. Indeed, we propose an index with respect to an extension-closed subcategory $\mathscr{N}$ of a triangulated category $\mathscr{C}$ and we prove an additivity formula with error term. Our index recovers the index with respect to a contravariantly finite, rigid subcategory $\mathscr{X}$ defined by Jørgensen and the second author, as well as an isomorphism between $K_0^{\mathsf{sp}}(\mathscr{X})$ and the Grothendieck group of a relative extriangulated structure $\mathscr{C}_{R}^{\mathscr{X}}$ on $\mathscr{C}$ when $\mathscr{X}$ is $n$-cluster tilting. In addition, we generalize and enhance some results of Fedele. Our perspective allows us to remove certain restrictions and simplify some arguments. Third, as another application of our Extriangulated Resolution Theorem, we show that if $\mathscr{X}$ is $n$-cluster tilting in an abelian category, then the index introduced by Reid gives an isomorphism $K_0(\mathscr{C}_R^{\mathscr{X}}) \cong K_0^{\mathsf{sp}}(\mathscr{X})$.

Auslander--Reiten theory in extriangulated categories

Abstract:The notion of an extriangulated category gives a unification of existing theories in exact or abelian categories and in triangulated categories. In this article, we develop Auslander--Reiten theory for extriangulated categories. This unifies Auslander--Reiten theories developed in exact categories and triangulated categories independently. We give two different sets of sufficient conditions on the extriangulated category so that existence of almost split extensions becomes equivalent to that of an Auslander--Reiten--Serre duality. We also show that existence of almost split extensions is preserved under taking relative extriangulated categories, ideal quotients, and extension-closed subcategories. Moreover, we prove that the stable category $\underline{\mathscr{C}}$ of an extriangulated category $\mathscr{C}$ is a $\tau$-category if $\mathscr{C}$ has enough projectives, almost split extensions and source morphisms. This gives various consequences on $\underline{\mathscr{C}}$, including Igusa--Todorov's Radical Layers Theorem, Auslander--Reiten Combinatorics on dimensions of Hom-spaces, and Reconstruction Theorem of the associated completely graded category of $\underline{\mathscr{C}}$ via the complete mesh category of the Auslander--Reiten species of $\underline{\mathscr{C}}$. Finally we prove that any locally finite symmetrizable $\tau$-quiver (=valued translation quiver) is an Auslander--Reiten quiver of some extriangulated category with sink morphisms and source morphisms.

Abstract:We give a characterization of the extriangulated categories which admit the structure of a triangulated category. We show that these are the extriangulated categories where for every object X in the extriangulated category, the morphism 0→X is a deflation and the morphism X→0 is an inflation. We thereby give an explicit proof to the statement that for a Frobenius extriangulated category ∐ where proj (∐)=0 , its stable category is triangulated.
