Abstract:Previous research has shown that trust judgments can be influenced by various factors. However, little is known about how young children make judgments when facing incongruent factors such as positive facial expression with negative behavior records. The current study explored this effect by presenting incongruent emotional faces and behavior records. In Study 1, participants made trust judgments based on facial expressions and behavior records of neutral faces transitioning to positive or negative expressions. Results indicate that age and behavior records significantly affect young children's trust judgments when facial expresion was neutral. While 5-6-year-olds can make accurate judgments based on behavior records, 4-year-olds cannot. The effect of behavior record was surpassed by facial emotion when young participants were presented with incongruent emotional faces and behavior records. Happy faces were consistently preferred, regardless of prior behavior records, even as facial expressions changed. Study 2 employed a consecutive trust judgement task using a revised serial trust-token paradigm with different emotional patterns. Results suggest that preschoolers' trust judgements changes dynamiclly as the facial emotion changed. When the emotional valence shifted from happy to neutral, children's trust in the face decreased significantly. While children's trust increased markedly when the transition was from an angry to a neutral expression. These findings emphasize the malleability of trust in response to the dynamic changing of daily emotional cues, underscoring the intricate interplay between facial emotions and trust in early childhood.
