Abstract:In this perspective, we discuss how one can initiate, image, and disentangle the ultrafast elementary steps of thermal-energy chemical dynamics, building upon advances in technology and scientific insight. We propose that combinations of ultrashort mid-infrared laser pulses, controlled molecular species in the gas phase, and forefront imaging techniques allow to unravel the elementary steps of general-chemistry reaction processes in real time. We detail, for prototypical first reaction systems, experimental methods enabling these investigations, how to sufficiently prepare and promote gas-phase samples to thermal-energy reactive states with contemporary ultrashort mid-infrared laser systems, and how to image the initiated ultrafast chemical dynamics. The results of such experiments will clearly further our understanding of general-chemistry reaction dynamics.

Abstract:Ultrafast lasers are versatile tools used in many scientific areas, from welding to eye surgery. They are also used to coherently manipulate light-matter interactions such as chemical reactions, but so far control experiments have concentrated on cleavage or rearrangement of existing molecular bonds. Here we demonstrate the synthesis of several molecular species starting from small reactant molecules in laser-induced catalytic surface reactions, and even the increase of the relative reaction efficiency by feedback-optimized laser pulses. We show that the control mechanism is nontrivial and sensitive to the relative proportion of the reactants. The control experiments open up a pathway towards photocatalysis and are relevant for research in physics, chemistry, and biology where light-induced bond formation is important.

Abstract:Quantum coherent control of ultrafast bond making and the subsequent molecular dynamics is crucial for the realization of a new photochemistry, where a shaped laser field is actively driving the chemical system in a coherent way from the thermal initial state of the reactants to the final state of the desired products. We demonstrate here coherent control over the relative yields of Mg$_2$ molecules that are generated via photoassociation and subsequently photodriven into different groups of final states. The strong-field process involves non-resonant multiphoton femtosecond photoassociation of a pair of thermally hot magnesium atoms into a bound Mg$_{2}$ molecule and subsequent molecular dynamics on electronically excited states. The branching-ratio control is achieved with linearly chirped laser pulses, utilizing the different chirp dependence that various groups of final molecular states display for their post-pulse population. Our study establishes the feasibility of high degree coherent control over quantum molecular dynamics that is initiated by femtosecond photoassociation of thermal atoms.

Abstract:Optically activated reactions initiate biological processes such as photosynthesis or vision, but can also control polymerization, catalysis or energy conversion. Methods relying on the manipulation of light at macroscopic and mesoscopic scales are used to control on-surface photochemistry, but do not offer atomic-scale control. Here we take advantage of the confinement of the electromagnetic field at the apex of a scanning tunnelling microscope tip to drive the phototautomerization of a free-base phthalocyanine with submolecular precision. We can control the reaction rate and the relative tautomer population through a change in the laser excitation wavelength or through the tip position. Atomically resolved tip-enhanced photoluminescence spectroscopy and hyperspectral mapping unravel an excited-state mediated process, which is quantitatively supported by a comprehensive theoretical model combining ab initio calculations with a parametric open-quantum-system approach. Our experimental strategy may allow insights in other photochemical reactions and proof useful to control complex on-surface reactions.

Ultra-fast photochemistry in the strong light-matter coupling regime

Abstract:Strong coupling between molecules and confined light modes of optical cavities to form polaritons can alter photochemistry, but the origin of this effect remains largely unknown. While theoretical models suggest a suppression of photochemistry due to the formation of new polaritonic potential energy surfaces, many of these models do not account for the energetic disorder among the molecules, which is unavoidable at ambient conditions. Here, we combine simulations and experiments to show that for an ultra-fast photochemical reaction such thermal disorder prevents the modification of the potential energy surface and that suppression is due to radiative decay of the lossy cavity modes. We also show that the excitation spectrum under strong coupling is a product of the excitation spectrum of the “bare” molecules and the absorption spectrum of the molecule-cavity system, suggesting that polaritons can act as gateways for channeling an excitation into a molecule, which then reacts “normally”. Our results therefore imply that strong coupling provides a means to tune the action spectrum of a molecule, rather than to change the reaction.

Abstract:Photochemistry is a fascinating branch of chemistry concerned with molecules and light. However, the importance of simulating light‐induced processes is reflected also in fields as diverse as biology, material science, or medicine. This Minireview highlights recent progress achieved in theoretical chemistry to calculate electronically excited states of molecules and simulate their photo‐induced dynamics aspiring to reach experimental accuracy. We focus on emergent methods and give selected examples that illustratethe progress in recent years towards predicting complex electronic structure situations involving strong correlation, performing calculations for large molecules, describing multi‐chromophoric systems, and simulating nonadiabatic molecular dynamics for long time scales, for molecules in gas phase or in complex biological environments.

Abstract:Exciting solid materials with femtosecond lasers enables the study of many-body interactions in quantum materials during non-equilibrium processes for the time scales of different degrees of freedom in materials may vary, and such nonthermal methods can lead to the realization of new or hidden states. As one of the frontier research areas in condensed matter physics, ultrafast electronic dynamics in quantum materials after photoexcitation can be studied using time-and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy as the key experimental tool. In this review, we focus on the use of nonlinear optical crystals and high-harmonic generation for time-and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We cover recent advances in the field, including (1) the probing of unoccupied electronic states in quantum materials, (2) the observation of light-induced ultrafast electronic phase transitions, (3) the measurement of microscopic electron-phonon coupling strength, and (4) the discovery of light-induced new states.

Abstract:The requirement of high space-time resolution and brightness is a great challenge for imaging atomic motion and making molecular movies. Important breakthroughs in ultrabright tabletop laser, x-ray and electron sources have enabled the direct imaging of evolving molecular structures in chemical processes. And recent experimental advances in preparing ultrafast laser and electron pulses equipped molecular imaging with femtosecond time resolution. This Perspectives present an overview of versatile imaging methods of molecular dynamics. High-order harmonic generation imaging and photoelectron diffraction imaging are based on laser-induced ionization and rescattering processes. Coulomb explosion imaging retrieves molecular structural information by detecting the momentum vectors of fragmented ions. Diffraction imaging encodes molecular structural and electronic information in reciprocal space. We also present various applications of these ultrafast imaging methods in resolving laser-induced nuclear and electronic dynamics.

Abstract:Ultrafast non-equilibrium dynamics offer a route to study the microscopic interactions that govern macroscopic behavior. In particular, photo-induced phase transitions (PIPTs) in solids provide a test case for how forces, and the resulting atomic motion along a reaction coordinate, originate from a non-equilibrium population of excited electronic states. Utilizing femtosecond photoemission we obtain access to the transient electronic structure during an ultrafast PIPT in a model system: indium nanowires on a silicon(111) surface. We uncover a detailed reaction pathway, allowing a direct comparison with the dynamics predicted by ab initio simulations. This further reveals the crucial role played by localized photo-holes in shaping the potential energy landscape, and enables a combined momentum and real space description of PIPTs, including the ultrafast formation of chemical bonds.

Abstract:The development of attosecond technology has enabled the real-time observation of coherent electron motion in atoms, molecules and condensed phases. Experimentally, it is now possible to generate laser pulses of durations of only a few tens of attoseconds. These durations are of the order of the revolution period of the first Bohr orbit (150 asec), opening the way to visualize and even control electron dynamics at its natural time scale. This PhD thesis constitutes a theoretical study of fundamental phenomena occurring in gas-phase molecules upon interaction with light. We have investigated ultrafast charge migration in biological molecules initiated by attosecond XUV pulses. In addition, we have studied the high-energy interferences that arise in the vibrationally-resolved photoelectron spectra of small polyatomic molecules. In order to explore these complex phenomena, we have employed numerical methods that describe molecular photoionization by evaluating continuum scattering wave functions, allowing us to compute different observables such as time-dependent electron densities or photoionization cross sections.

Abstract:In strong laser fields, sub-femtosecond control of chemical reactions with the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) becomes feasible. We have studied the control of reaction dynamics of acetylene and allene in intense few-cycle laser pulses at 750 nm, where ionic fragments are recorded with a reaction microscope. We find that by varying the CEP and intensity of the laser pulses it is possible to steer the motion of protons in the molecular dications, enabling control over deprotonation and isomerization reactions. The experimental results are compared to predictions from a quantum dynamical model, where the control is based on the manipulation of the phases of a vibrational wave packet by the laser waveform. The measured intensity dependence in the CEP-controlled deprotonation of acetylene is well captured by the model. In the case of the isomerization of acetylene, however, we find differences in the intensity dependence between experiment and theory. For the isomerization of allene, an inversion of the CEP-dependent asymmetry is observed when the intensity is varied, which we discuss in light of the quantum dynamical model. The inversion of the asymmetry is found to be consistent with a transition from non-sequential to sequential double ionization.

Abstract:Light triggers numerous fundamental biological processes in living organisms, by promoting (multi)chromophoric biomolecular systems to an excited state, which activates their function. The ability of these photoactive systems to absorb and use solar energy is often regulated by their microenvironment, which modulates their structural and energetic landscape and, thus, their functionality. Various stimuli-responsive photoactive materials are designed based on this principle. Understanding how photoactive molecular systems respond to light and environmental changes requires tracking changes at both the electronically excited- and ground-state levels, with ultrafast resolution across a broad range of timescales. Indeed, while light-induced excited-state dynamics involve processes as rapid as a few femtoseconds, the structural and electrostatic responses to microenvironmental changes may occur at timescales orders of magnitude slower, up to the millisecond and beyond. We demonstrate that this investigation can now be enabled by a novel and universal three-pulse ultrafast spectroscopy method that: (i) induces controlled, local changes in the microenvironment of a solution, specifically of pH, and (ii) probes the rapid spectroscopic response of photoactive molecules in both the ground and excited states, from femtoseconds to milliseconds. Controlling changes in the microenvironment and – simultaneously – bridging the ultrafast timescales of excited-state dynamics with the slower timescales of environmental and conformational changes is key to advancing our understanding of how living organisms and artificial materials regulate the interplay between light, environment, and structure in light-induced molecular processes.

Abstract:We describe here the development of time-correlated single-photon counting techniques from the early use of spark discharge lamps as light sources through to the use of femtosecond mode-locked lasers through the personal work of the author. We used laser-excited fluorescence in studies on energy migration and rotational relaxation in synthetic polymer solutions, in biological probe molecules and in supersonic jet expansions. Time-correlated single-photon counting was the first method used in early fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM), and we outline the development of this powerful technique, with a comparison of techniques including wide-field microscopy. We employed these modern forms of FLIM to study single biological cells, and applied FLIM also to gain an understanding the distribution in tissue, and fates of photosensitizer molecules used in photodynamic therapy. We also describe the uses and instrumental design of laser systems for the study of ultrafast time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy.

Abstract:Phenomena involving electron transfer are ubiquitous in nature, photosynthesis and enzymes or protein activity being prominent examples. Their deep understanding thus represents a mandatory scientific goal. Moreover, controlling the separation of photogenerated charges is a crucial prerequisite in many applicative contexts, including quantum electronics, photo-electrochemical water splitting, photocatalytic dye degradation, and energy conversion. In particular, photoinduced charge separation is the pivotal step driving the storage of sun light into electrical or chemical energy. If properly mastered, these processes may also allow us to achieve a better command of information storage at the nanoscale, as required for the development of molecular electronics, optical switching, or quantum technologies, amongst others. In this Topical review we survey recent progress in the understanding of ultrafast charge separation from photoexcited states. We report the state-of-the-art of the observation and theoretical description of charge separation phenomena in the ultrafast regime mainly focusing on molecular- and nano-sized solar energy conversion systems. In particular, we examine different proposed mechanisms driving ultrafast charge dynamics, with particular regard to the role of quantum coherence and electron-nuclear coupling, and link experimental observations to theoretical approaches based either on model Hamiltonians or on first principles simulations.

Abstract:Optical pulses are routinely used to drive dynamical changes in the properties of solids. In quantum materials, many new phenomena have been discovered, including ultrafast transitions between electronic phases, switching of ferroic orders and nonequilibrium emergent behaviors such as photo-induced superconductivity. Understanding the underlying non-equilibrium physics requires detailed measurements of multiple microscopic degrees of freedom at ultrafast time resolution. Femtosecond x-rays are key to this endeavor, as they can access the dynamics of structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. Here, we cover a series of representative experimental studies in which ultrashort x-ray pulses from free electron lasers have been used, opening up new horizons for materials research.
