Abstract:The Jones problem is a question whether there is a non-trivial knot with the trivial Jones polynomial in one variable $q$. The answer to this fundamental question is still unknown despite numerous attempts to explore it. In braid presentation the case of 4-strand braids is already open. S. Bigelow showed in 2000 that if the Burau representation for four-strand braids is unfaithful, then there is an infinite number of non-trivial knots with the trivial two-variable HOMFLY-PT polynomial and hence, with the trivial Jones polynomial, since it is obtained from the HOMFLY-PT polynomial by the specialisation of one of the variables $A=q^2$.

Abstract:We use the degree of the colored Jones knot polynomials to show that the crossing number of a $(p,q)$-cable of an adequate knot with crossing number $c$ is larger than $q^2\, c$. As an application we determine the crossing number of $2$-cables of adequate knots. We also determine the crossing number of the connected sum of any adequate knot with a $2$-cable of an adequate knot.

Abstract:We find explicit maximal rank Coxeter quotients for the knot groups of 595,515 out of the 1,701,936 knots through 16 crossings. We thus calculate the bridge numbers and verify Cappell and Shaneson's Meridional Rank Conjecture for these knots. In addition, we provide a computational tool for establishing the conjecture for those knots beyond 16 crossings whose meridional ranks can be detected via finite Coxeter quotients.

A determinant formula of the Jones polynomial for a family of braids

Abstract:In 2012, Cohen, Dasbach, and Russell presented an algorithm to construct a weighted adjacency matrix for a given knot diagram. In the case of pretzel knots, it is shown that after evaluation, the determinant of the matrix recovers the Jones polynomial. Although the Jones polynomial is known to be #P-hard by Jaeger, Vertigan, and Welsh, this presents a class of knots for which the Jones polynomial can be computed in polynomial time by using the determinant. In this paper, we extend these results by recovering the Jones polynomial as the determinant of a weighted adjacency matrix for certain subfamilies of the braid group. Lastly, we compute the Kauffman polynomial of (2,q) torus knots in polynomial time using the balanced overlaid Tait graphs. This is the first known example of generalizing the methodology of Cohen to a class of quantum invariants which cannot be derived from the HOMFLYPT polynomial.

Linear Bounds of the Crosscap Number of Knots

Abstract:Kalfagianni and Lee found two-sided bounds for the crosscap number of an alternating link in terms of certain coefficients of the Jones polynomial. We show here that we can find similar two-sided bounds for the crosscap number of Conway sums of strongly alternating tangles. Then we find families of links for which these coefficients of the Jones polynomial and the crosscap number grow independently. These families will enable us to show that neither linear bound generalizes for all links.

Abstract:This paper gives infinitely many examples of unknot diagrams that are hard, in the sense that the diagrams need to be made more complicated by Reidemeister moves before they can be simplified. In order to construct these diagrams, we prove theorems characterizing when the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles is an unknot. The key theorem shows that the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles [P/Q] and [R/S] is unknotted if and only if PS + QR has absolute value equal to 1. The paper uses these results in studying processive DNA recombination, finding minimal size unknot diagrams, generalizing to collapses to knots as well as to unknots, and in finding unknots with arbirarily high complexity. The paper is self-contained, with a review of the theory of rational tangles and a last section on relationships of the theme of the paper with other aspects of topology and number theory. The present version of the paper contains a correction to Figure 22 of the previous (and published) version, a small expansion to the section on Farey fractions, and an updated reference to the paper "Unknotting unknots" by Henrich and Kauffman.

Ropelength and Writhe Quantization of 12-Crossing Knots

Abstract:The ropelength of a knot is the minimum length required to tie it. Computational upper bounds have previously been computed for every prime knot with up to 11 crossings. Here, we present ropelength measurements for the 2176 knots with 12 crossings, of which 1288 are alternating and 888 are non-alternating. We report on the distribution of ropelengths within and between crossing numbers, as well as the space writhe of the tight knot configurations. It was previously established that tight alternating knots have a "quantized" space writhe close to a multiple of 4/7. Our data supports this for 12-crossing alternating knots and we find that non-alternating knots also show evidence of writhe quantization, falling near integer or half-integer multiples of 4/3, depending on the parity of the crossing number. Finally, we examine correlations between geometric properties and topological invariants of tight knots, finding that the ropelength is positively correlated with hyperbolic volume and its correlates, and that the space writhe is correlated with the signature and Rasmussen s invariant of the knots.

Abstract:We compute the Jones polynomial for a three-parameter family of links, the twisted torus links of the form $T((p,q),(2,s))$ where $p$ and $q$ are coprime and $s$ is nonzero. When $s = 2n$, these links are the twisted torus knots $T(p,q,2,n)$. We show that for $T(p,q,2,n)$, the Jones polynomial is trivial if and only if the knot is trivial.

Abstract:We have developed a reinforcement learning agent that often finds a minimal sequence of unknotting crossing changes for a knot diagram with up to 200 crossings, hence giving an upper bound on the unknotting number. We have used this to determine the unknotting number of 57k knots. We took diagrams of connected sums of such knots with oppositely signed signatures, where the summands were overlaid. The agent has found examples where several of the crossing changes in an unknotting collection of crossings result in hyperbolic knots. Based on this, we have shown that, given knots $K$ and $K'$ that satisfy some mild assumptions, there is a diagram of their connected sum and $u(K) + u(K')$ unknotting crossings such that changing any one of them results in a prime knot. As a by-product, we have obtained a dataset of 2.6 million distinct hard unknot diagrams; most of them under 35 crossings. Assuming the additivity of the unknotting number, we have determined the unknotting number of 43 at most 12-crossing knots for which the unknotting number is unknown.

Abstract:In the complement of a hyperbolic Montesinos knot with 4 rational tangles, we investigate the number of closed, connected, essential, orientable surfaces of a fixed genus $g$, up to isotopy. We show that there are exactly 12 genus 2 surfaces and $8\phi(g - 1)$ surfaces of genus greater than 2, where $\phi(g - 1)$ is the Euler totient function of $g - 1$. Observe that this count is independent of the number of crossings of the knot. Moreover, this class of knots form an infinite class of hyperbolic 3-manifolds and the result applies to all such knot complements.

Abstract:An $n$-crossing is a point in the projection of a knot where $n$ strands cross so that each strand bisects the crossing. An übercrossing projection has a single $n$-crossing and a petal projection has a single $n$-crossing such that there are no loops nested within others. The übercrossing number, $\text{ü}(K)$, is the smallest $n$ for which we can represent a knot $K$ with a single $n$-crossing. The petal number is the number of loops in the minimal petal projection. In this paper, we relate the übercrossing number and petal number to well-known invariants such as crossing number, bridge number, and unknotting number. We find that the bounds we have constructed are tight for $(r, r+1)$-torus knots. We also explore the behavior of übercrossing number under composition.

Abstract:We continue our study of the degree of the colored Jones polynomial under knot cabling started in "Knot Cabling and the Degree of the Colored Jones Polynomial" (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1501.01574" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1501.01574">arXiv:1501.01574</a>). Under certain hypothesis on this degree, we determine how the Jones slopes and the linear term behave under cabling. As an application we verify Garoufalidis' Slope Conjecture and a conjecture of the authors for cables of a two-parameter family of closed 3-braids called 2-fusion knots.

Abstract:We study systems of $2$-tangle equations which play an important role in the analysis of enzyme actions on DNA strands. We show that every system of framed tangle equations has at most one framed rational solution. Furthermore, we show that the Jones Unknot conjecture implies that if a system of tangle equations has a rational solution then that solution is unique among all $2$-tangles. This result potentially opens a door to a purely topological disproof of the Jones Unknot conjecture. We introduce the notion of the Kauffman bracket ratio $\{T\}_q\in \mathbb Q(q)$ of any $2$-tangle $T$ and we conjecture that for $q=1$ it is the slope of meridionally incompressible surfaces in $D^3-T$. We prove that conjecture for algebraic $T$. We also prove that for rational $T$, the brackets $\{T\}_q$ coincide with the $q$-rationals of Morier-Genoud-Ovsienko. Additionally, we relate systems of tangle equations to the Cosmetic Surgery Conjecture and the Nugatory Crossing Conjecture.

Abstract:Garoufalidis conjectured a relation between the boundary slopes of a knot and its colored Jones polynomials. According to the conjecture, certain boundary slopes are detected by the sequence of degrees of the colored Jones polynomials. We verify this conjecture for adequate knots, a class that vastly generalizes that of alternating knots.

Abstract:We investigate coincidences of the (one-variable) Jones polynomial amongst rational knots, what we call `Jones rational coincidences'. We provide moves on the continued fraction expansion of the associated rational which we prove do not change the Jones polynomial and conjecture (based on experimental evidence from all rational knots with determinant $<900$) that these moves are sufficient to generate all Jones rational coincidences. These coincidences are generically not mutants, as is verified by checking the HOMFLYPT polynomial. In the process we give a new formula for the Jones polynomial of a rational knot based on a continued fraction expansion of the associated rational, which has significantly fewer terms than other formulae known to us. The paper is based on the second author's Ph.D. thesis and gives an essentially self-contained account.

Abstract:Using the Hatcher-Oertel algorithm for finding boundary slopes of Montesinos knots, we prove the Slope Conjecture and the Strong Slope Conjecture for a family of 3-tangle pretzel knots. More precisely, we prove that the maximal degrees of the colored Jones polynomial of such knots determine a boundary slope as predicted by the Slope Conjecture, and that the linear term in the degrees correspond to the Euler characteristic of an essential surface.
