Abstract:Let $A$ be a finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}^n$, which generates $\mathbb{Z}^n$ additively. We provide a precise description of the $N$-fold sumsets $NA$ for $N$ sufficiently large, with some explicit bounds on "sufficiently large."

Abstract:For a real set $A$ consider the semigroup $S(A)$, additively generated by $A$; that is, the set of all real numbers representable as a (finite) sum of elements of $A$. If $A \subset (0,1)$ is open and non-empty, then $S(A)$ is easily seen to contain all sufficiently large real numbers, and we let $G(A) := \sup \{u \in R \colon u \notin S(A) \}$. Thus, $G(A)$ is the smallest number with the property that any $u>G(A)$ is representable as indicated above. We show that if the measure of $A$ is large, then $G(A)$ is small; more precisely, writing for brevity $\alpha := \mes A$ we have $$ G(A) \le (1-\alpha) \lfloor 1/\alpha \rfloor \quad &\text{if $0 < \alpha \le 0.1$}, (1-\alpha+\alpha\{1/\alpha\})\lfloor 1/\alpha\rfloor \quad &\text{if $0.1 \le \alpha \le 0.5$}, 2(1-\alpha) \quad &\text{if $0.5 \le \alpha \le 1$}. $$ Indeed, the first and the last of these three estimates are the best possible, attained for $A=(1-\alpha,1)$ and $A=(1-\alpha,1)\setminus\{2(1-\alpha)\}$, respectively; the second is close to the best possible and can be improved by $\alpha \{1/\alpha\} \lfloor 1/\alpha \rfloor \le \{1/\alpha\}$ at most. The problem studied is a continuous analogue of the linear Diophantine problem of Frobenius (in its extremal settings due to Erdos and Graham), also known as the "postage stamp problem" or the "coin exchange problem".

Abstract:For a set $A$ of positive integers with $\gcd(A)=1$, let $\langle A \rangle$ denote the set of all finite linear combinations of elements of $A$ over the non-negative integers. The it is well known that only finitely many positive integers do not belong to $\langle A \rangle$. The Frobenius number and the genus associated with the set $A$ is the largest number and the cardinality of the set of integers non-representable by $A$. By a generalized Fibonacci sequence $\{V_n\}_{n \ge 1}$ we mean any sequence of positive integers satisfying the recurrence $V_n=V_{n-1}+V_{n-2}$ for $n \ge 3$. We study the problem of determining the Frobenius number and genus for sets $A=\{V_n,V_{n+d},V_{n+2d},\ldots\}$ for arbitrary $n$, where $d$ odd or $d=2$.

Addition Chains Meet Postage Stamps: Reducing the Number of Multiplications

Abstract:We introduce stamp chains. A stamp chain is a finite integer sequence that is both an addition chain and an additive 2-basis, i.e., a solution to the postage stamp problem. We provide a simple method for converting known postage stamp solutions of length k into stamp chains of length k+1. Using stamp chains, we construct an algorithm that computes u(x^i) for i=1,...,n in less than n-1 multiplications, if u is a function that can be computed at zero cost, and if there exists another zero-cost function v such that v(a,b) = u(ab). This can substantially reduce the computational cost of repeated multiplication, as illustrated by application examples related to matrix multiplication and data clustering using subset convolution. In addition, we report the extremal postage stamp solutions of length k=24.

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, ..., a_n)$ be relative prime positive integers with $a_i\geq 2$. The Frobenius number $g(A)$ is the greatest integer not belonging to the set $\big\{ \sum_{i=1}^na_ix_i\ |x_i\in \mathbb{N}\big\}$. The general Frobenius problem includes the determination of $g(A)$ and the related Sylvester number $n(A)$ and Sylvester sum $s(A)$. We present a new approach to the Frobenius problem. Basically, we transform the problem into an easier optimization problem. If the new problem can be solved explicitly, then we will be able to obtain a formula of $g(A)$. We illustrate the idea by giving concise proof of some existing formulas and finding some interesting new formulas of $g(A), n(A), s(A)$. Moreover, we find that MacMahon's partition analysis applies to give a new way of calculating $n(A), s(A)$ by using a rational function representation of a polynomial determined by $A$.

Large sum-free sets in finite vector spaces I

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number with $p\equiv 2\pmod{3}$ and let $n\ge 1$ be a dimension. It is known that a sum-free subset of ${\mathbb F}_p^n$ can have at most the size $\frac13(p+1)p^{n-1}$ and that, up to automorphisms of ${\mathbb F}_p^n$, the only extremal example is the `cuboid' $\bigl[\frac{p+1}3, \frac{2p-1}3\bigr]\times {\mathbb F}_p^{n-1}$. For $p\ge 11$ we show that if a sum-free subset of ${\mathbb F}_p^n$ is not contained in such an extremal one, then its size is at most $\frac13(p-2)p^{n-1}$. This bound is optimal and we classify the extremal configurations. The remaining cases $p=2, 5$ are known to behave differently. For $p=3$ the analogous question was solved by Vsevolod Lev, and for $p\equiv 1\pmod{3}$ it is less interesting.

The genus $g(A)$ is the number of positive integer elements that are not in $\langle A\rangle$. The Frobenius problem is to find $F(A)$ and $g(A)$ for a given sequence $A$. In this note, we study the Frobenius problem of $A=\left(a,ba+d,b^2a+\frac{b^2-1}{b-1}d,...,b^ka+\frac{b^k-1}{b-1}d\right)$ and obtain formulas for $F(A)$ and $g(A)$ when $a\geq k-1$. Our formulas simplifies further for some special cases, such as repunit, Mersenne and Thabit numerical semigroups. The idea is similar to that in [\cite{LiuXin23},<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2306.03459" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.03459">arXiv:2306.03459</a>].

A Combinatorial Model of Numerical Semigroup

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, ..., a_n)$ be relative prime positive integers with $a_i\geq 2$. The Frobenius number $F(A)$ is the largest integer not belonging to the numerical semigroup $\langle A\rangle$ generated by $A$. The genus $g(A)$ is the number of positive integer elements that are not in $\langle A\rangle$. The Frobenius problem is to find $F(A)$ and $g(A)$ for a given sequence $A$. In this paper, we study the Frobenius problem of $A=\left(a,h_1a+b_1d,h_2a+b_2d,...,h_ka+b_kd\right)$ with some restrictions. An innovation is that $d$ can be a negative integer. In particular, when $A=\left(a,ba+d,b^2a+\frac{b^2-1}{b-1}d,...,b^ka+\frac{b^k-1}{b-1}d\right)$, we obtain formulas for $F(A)$ and $g(A)$ when $a\geq k-1-\frac{d-1}{b-1}$. Our formulas simplifies further for some special cases, such as Mersenne, Thabit and repunit numerical semigroups. We obtain explicit closed formulas for generalized Mersenne, Thabit and repunit numerical semigroups and some more general numerical semigroups. Finally, we partially solve an open problem for the Porth numerical semigroup.

Abstract:Given a number field K with at least one real embedding, we generalize the notion of the classical Frobenius problem to the ring of integers of K by describing certain Frobenius semigroups, , for appropriate elements . We construct a partial ordering on , and show that this set is completely described by the maximal elements with respect to this ordering. We also show that will always have finitely many such maximal elements, but in general, the number of maximal elements can grow without bound as n is fixed and vary. Explicit examples of the Frobenius semigroups are also calculated for certain cases in real quadratic number fields.

A note on the largest sum-free sets of integers

Abstract:Given $A$ a set of $N$ positive integers, an old question in additive combinatorics asks that whether $A$ contains a sum-free subset of size at least $N/3+\omega(N)$ for some increasing unbounded function $\omega$. The question is generally attacked in the literature by considering another conjecture, which asserts that as $N\to\infty$, $\max_{x\in\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}}\sum_{n\in A}({\bf 1}_{(1/3,2/3)}-1/3)(nx)\to\infty$. This conjecture, if true, would also imply that a similar phenomenon occurs for $(2k,4k)$-sum-free sets for every $k\geq1$. In this note, we prove the latter result directly. The new ingredient of our proof is a structural analysis on the host set $A$, which might be of independent interest.

The structure of large sum-free sets in $\mathbb{F}_p^n$

Abstract:A set $A\subset \mathbb{F}_p^n$ is sum-free if $A+A$ does not intersect $A$. If $p\equiv 2 \mod 3$, the maximal size of a sum-free in $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ is known to be $(p^n+p^{n-1})/3$. We show that if a sum-free set $A\subset \mathbb{F}_p^n$ has size at least $p^n/3-p^{n-1}/6+p^{n-2}$, then there exists subspace $V<\mathbb{F}_p^n$ of co-dimension 1 such that $A$ is contained in $(p+1)/3$ cosets of $V$. For $p=5$ specifically, we show the stronger result that every sum-free set of size larger than $1.2\cdot 5^{n-1}$ has this property, thus improving on a recent theorem of Lev.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a finite subset of an arbitrary additive group $G$, and let $\phi(A)$ denote the cardinality of the largest subset $B$ in $A$ that is sum-avoiding in $A$ (that is to say, $b_1+b_2 \not \in A$ for all distinct $b_1,b_2 \in B$). The question of controlling the size of $A$ in terms of $\phi(A)$ in the case when $G$ was torsion-free was posed by Erdős and Moser. When $G$ has torsion, $A$ can be arbitrarily large for fixed $\phi(A)$ due to the presence of subgroups. Nevertheless, we provide a qualitative answer to an analogue of the Erdős-Moser problem in this setting, by establishing a structure theorem, which roughly speaking asserts that $A$ is either efficiently covered by $\phi(A)$ finite subgroups of $G$, or by fewer than $\phi(A)$ finite subgroups of $G$ together with a residual set of bounded cardinality. In order to avoid a large number of nested inductive arguments, our proof uses the language of nonstandard analysis. We also answer negatively a question of Erdős regarding large subsets $A$ of finite additive groups $G$ with $\phi(A)$ bounded, but give a positive result when $|G|$ is not divisible by small primes.

Abstract:Let $A \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$ be a finite set. It is known that the sumset $NA$ has predictable size ($\vert NA\vert = P_A(N)$ for some $P_A(X) \in \mathbb{Q}[X]$) and structure (all of the lattice points in some finite cone other than all of the lattice points in a finite collection of exceptional subcones), once $N$ is larger than some threshold. In previous work, joint with Shakan, the first and third named authors established the first effective bounds for both of these thresholds for an arbitrary set $A$. In this article we substantially improve each of these bounds, coming much closer to the corresponding lower bounds known.

In fact Cauchy–Davenport is exactly inequality (a) for ℓ=1. When F=Zp inequality (a) was proved in J.M. Pollard (J. London Math. Soc. 8 (1974) 460–462); see also M.B. Abstract:Let A be a subset of an abelian group G. For integers h,r≥1 the generalized h-fold sumset, denoted by h(r)A, is the set of sums of h elements of A, where each element appears in the sum at most r times. If G=Z, lower bounds for |h(r)A| are known, as well as the structure of the sets of integers for which |h(r)A| is minimal. In this paper, we generalize this result by giving a lower bound for |h(r)A| when G=Z/pZ for a prime p, and show new proofs for the direct and inverse problems in Z.

Abstract:Given relatively prime positive integers, $a_1,\ldots,a_n$, the Frobenius number is the largest integer with no representations of the form $a_1x_1+\cdots+a_nx_n$ with nonnegative integers $x_i$. This classical value has recently been generalized: given a nonnegative integer $k$, what is the largest integer with at most $k$ such representations? Other classical values can be generalized too: for example, how many nonnegative integers are representable in at most $k$ ways? For sufficiently large $k$, we give formulas for these values by understanding the level sets of the restricted partition function (the function $f(t)$ giving the number of representations of $t$). Furthermore, we give the full asymptotics of all of these values, as well as reprove formulas for some special cases (such as the $n=2$ case and a certain extremal family from the literature). Finally, we obtain the first two leading terms of the restricted partition function as a so-called quasi-polynomial.

Abstract:Let G be any additive abelian group with cyclic torsion subgroup, and let A, B and C be finite subsets of G with cardinality n > 0. We show that there is a numbering {a(i)}(n)(i=1)of the elements of A, a numbering {b(i)}(n)(i=1) of the elements of B and a numbering {c(i)}(n)(i=1) of the elements of C, such that all the sums a(i) + b(i) + c(i) (1 <= i <= n) are (pairwise) distinct. Consequently, each subcube of the Latin cube formed by the Cayley addition table of Z/NZ contains a Latin transversal. This additive theorem is an essential result which can be further extended via restricted sumsets in a field.

Abstract:This article is divided into two parts. In the first part we work over a field $\mathbb{k}$ and prove that the Frobenius space associated to a Frobenius algebra is generated as left A-module by the Frobenius coproduct. In particular, we prove that the Frobenius dimension coincides with the dimension of the algebra. In the second part we work with a commutative ring $k$. We introduce the concept of nearly Frobenius algebras in this context and construct solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation starting from elements in the Frobenius space. Also, we give a list of equivalent characterizations of nearly Frobenius algebras.
