Abstract:We study the metastable equilibrium properties of the Potts model with heat-bath transition rates using a novel expansion. The method is especially powerful for large number of state spin variables and it is notably accurate in a rather wide range of temperatures around the phase transition.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the metastable state properties of the two - dimensional Potts model in a large number of states (that is, when the number of states \(q\) is very large). Specifically, the author studied the metastable state behavior of the system at different temperatures when \(q\) is large under the heat - bath dynamics. The main objectives of the paper include: 1. **Study metastable state characteristics**: By introducing a new expansion method, study the metastable state equilibrium properties of the two - dimensional Potts model under a large number of states \(q\). This method is especially suitable for the case of a large number of states and shows high accuracy in a series of temperature ranges near the phase - transition temperature. 2. **Analyze dynamic processes**: Explore the dynamic behavior of the system under sub - critical quenching (that is, quenching from a disordered state to a temperature below the phase - transition temperature \(T_c\)) and super - critical quenching (that is, quenching from an ordered state to a temperature above the phase - transition temperature \(T_c\)). In particular, the author focused on the metastable state characteristics of the system during these quenching processes. 3. **Derive free - energy density**: By identifying the key microscopic transition paths under a large number of states \(q\), derive the free - energy density of the two phases (the disordered phase and the ordered phase), and calculate various thermodynamic observables from these free - energy densities, thereby quantifying the metastable state behavior in detail. 4. **Numerical verification**: Verify the theoretical predictions through high - precision numerical simulations to ensure the correctness and reliability of the theoretical results. In summary, this paper aims to gain an in - depth understanding of the metastable state properties and their dynamic evolution processes of the two - dimensional Potts model under a large number of states \(q\) through theoretical analysis and numerical simulations.
