Abstract:A variation of Dyck paths allows for down-steps of arbitrary length, not just one. Credits for this invention are given to Emeric Deutsch. Surprisingly, the enumeration of them is somewhat akin to the analysis of Motzkin-paths; the last section contains a bijection.

Abstract:In \cite{BaDeFePi96} the concept of nondecreasing Dyck paths was introduced. We continue this research by looking at it from the point of view of words, rational languages, planted plane trees, and continued fractions. We construct a bijection with planted plane trees of height $\le 4$ and compute various statistics on trees that are the equivalents of nondecreasing Dyck paths.

Abstract:In this paper we consider several statistics on the set of Dyck paths. Enumeration of Dyck paths according to length and various other parameters has been studied in several papers. However, the statistic \number of udu’s" has been considered only recently. We generalize this statistic and derive an explicit formula for the number of Dyck paths of length 2n according to the statistic \number of uu ¢ ¢ ¢ udu’s" (\number of udud ¢ ¢ ¢ udu’s"). As a consequence, we derive several known results, as well as many new results.

Abstract:Various lattice path models are reviewed. The enumeration is done using generating functions. A few bijective considerations are woven in as well. The kernel method is often used. Computer algebra was an essential tool. Some results are new, some have appeared before. The lattice path models we treated, are: Hoppy's walks, the combinatorics of sequence A002212 in \cite{OEIS} (skew Dyck paths, Schröder paths, Hex-trees, decorated ordered trees, multi-edge trees, etc.) Weighted unary-binary trees also occur, and we could improve on our old paper on Horton-Strahler numbers \cite{FlPr86}, by using a different substitution. Some material on ternary trees appears as well, as on Motzkin numbers and paths (a model due to Retakh), and a new concept called amplitude that was found in \cite{irene}. Some new results on Deutsch paths in a strip are included as well. During the Covid period, I spent much time with this beautiful concept that I dare to call Deutsch paths, since Emeric Deutsch stands at the beginning with a problem that he posted in the American Mathematical Monthly some 20 years ago. Peaks and valleys, studied by Rainer Kemp 40 years under the names \textsc{max}-turns and \textsc{min}-turns, are revisited with a more modern approach, streamlining the analysis, relying on the `subcritical case' (named so by Philippe Flajolet), the adding a new slice technique and once again the kernel method.

Abstract:The number of Dyck paths of semilength $n$ is famously $C_n$, the $n$th Catalan number. This fact follows after noticing that every Dyck path can be uniquely parsed according to a context-free grammar. In a recent paper, Zeilberger showed that many restricted sets of Dyck paths satisfy different, more complicated grammars, and from this derived various generating function identities. We take this further, highlighting some combinatorial results about Dyck paths obtained via grammatical proof and generalizing some of Zeilberger's grammars to infinite families.

Abstract:Skew Dyck paths are a variation of Dyck paths, where additionally to steps $(1,1)$ and $(1,-1)$ a south-west step $(-1,-1)$ is also allowed, provided that the path does not intersect itself. Replacing the south-west step by a red south-east step, we end up with decorated Dyck paths. Sequence A128723 of the Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences considers such paths where peaks at level 1 are forbidden. We provide a thorough analysis of a more general scenario, namely partial decorated Dyck paths, ending on a prescribed level $j$, both from left-to-right and from right-to-left (decorated Dyck paths are not symmetric). The approach is completely based on generating functions.

Progressive and Rushed Dyck Paths

Abstract:We call progressive paths and rushed paths two families of Dyck paths studied by Asinowski and Jelinek, which have the same enumerating sequence (OEIS entry A287709). We present a bijection proving this fact. Rushed paths turn out to be in bijection with one-sided trees, introduced by Durhuus and Unel, which have an asymptotic enumeration involving a stretched exponential. We conclude by presenting several other classes of related lattice paths and directed animals that may have similar asymptotic properties.

Abstract:We consider Dyck paths having height at most two with some constraints on the number of consecutive valleys at height one which must be followed by a suitable number of valleys at height zero. We prove that they are enumerated by so-called Q-bonacci numbers (recently introduced by Kirgizov) which generalize the classical q-bonacci numbers in the case where q is a positive rational.

Abstract:Raised $k$-Dyck paths are a generalization of $k$-Dyck paths that may both begin and end at a nonzero height. In this paper, we develop closed formulas for the number of raised $k$-Dyck paths from $(0,\alpha)$ to $(\ell,\beta)$ for all height pairs $\alpha,\beta \geq 0$, all lengths $\ell \geq 0$, and all $k \geq 2$. We then enumerate raised $k$-Dyck paths with a fixed number of returns to ground, a fixed minimum height, and a fixed maximum height, presenting generating functions (in terms of the generating functions $C_k(t)$ for the $k$-Catalan numbers) when closed formulas aren't tractable. Specializing our results to $k=2$ or to $\alpha < k$ reveal connections with preexisting results concerning height-bounded Dyck paths and "Dyck paths with a negative boundary", respectively.

Abstract:We consider the problem of enumerating Dyck paths staying weakly above the x-axis with a limit to the number of consecutive up steps, or a limit to the number of consecutive down steps. We use Finite Operator Calculus to obtain formulas for the number of all such paths reaching a given point in the first quadrant. All our results are based on the Eulerian coefficients.

Abstract:We prove new bijections between different variants of Dyck paths and integer compositions, which give combinatorial explanations of their simple counting formula $4^{n-1}$. These give relations between different statistics, such as the number of crossings of the $x$-axis in classes of Dyck bridges or the distribution of peaks in classes of Dyck paths, and furthermore relate them with $k$- and $g$-compositions. These allow us to find and prove congruence results for Dyck paths and parity results for compositions. Our investigation uncovers unexpected connections to mock theta functions, Hardinian arrays, little Schr\"oder paths, Fibonacci numbers, and irreducible pairs of compositions, offering new insights into the structures of paths, partitions and compositions.

Restricting Dyck Paths and 312-avoiding Permutations

Abstract:Dyck paths having height at most $h$ and without valleys at height $h-1$ are combinatorially interpreted by means of 312-avoding permutations with some restrictions on their \emph{left-to-right maxima}. The results are obtained by analyzing a restriction of a well-known bijection between the sets of Dyck paths and 312-avoding permutations. We also provide a recursive formula enumerating these two structures using ECO method and the theory of production matrices. As a further result we obtain a family of combinatorial identities involving Catalan numbers.

Dyck Numbers, IV. Nested patterns in OEIS A036991

Abstract:Dyck paths (also balanced brackets and Dyck words) are among the most heavily studied Catalan families. This paper is a continuation of [2, 3, 4]. In the paper we are dealing with the numbering of Dyck paths, with the resulting numbers, the terms of the OEIS sequence A036991, which encode Dyck paths and which we have called the Dyck numbers. In this sequence, it turned out to be promising to investigate nested term patterns. The sequence is constructed entirely from nested patterns, with each pattern having an infinite number of copies. We have already considered repeated triplets of adjacent odd numbers; copies of such triplets in the process of expansion form quite complex structures, the analysis of which allows us to understand the structure of A036991. Additionally, we note that the composition of the terms of each pattern is repeated many times by a simple shift (offset) of Dyck numbers by some fixed value. As a result, pattern copies give us important parts of most levels and even give us new levels.

Abstract:We present a substantial generalization of the equinumeracy of grand Dyck paths and Dyck-path prefixes, constrained within a band. The number of constrained paths starting at level $i$ and ending in a window of size $2j+2$ is equal to the number starting at level $j$ and ending in a window of size $2i+2$ centered around the same point. A new encoding of lattice paths provides a bijective proof.

Abstract:We provide enumerating results for partial knight's paths of a given size. We prove algebraically that zigzag knight's paths of a given size ending on the $x$-axis are enumerated by the generalized Catalan numbers, and we give a constructive bijection with peakless Motzkin paths of a given length. After enumerating partial knight's paths of a given length, we prove that zigzag knight's paths of a given length ending on the $x$-axis are counted by the Catalan numbers. Finally, we give a constructive bijection with Dyck paths of a given length.

Abstract:It is known that $A$-paths of length $0$ mod $m$ satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property if $m=2$ or $m=4$, but not if $m > 4$ is composite. We show that if $p$ is prime, then $A$-paths of length $0$ mod $p$ satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property. More generally, in the framework of undirected group-labelled graphs, we characterize the abelian groups $\Gamma$ and elements $\ell \in \Gamma$ for which the Erdős-Pósa property holds for $A$-paths of weight $\ell$.

Abstract:There are (at least) three bijections from Dyck paths to 321-avoiding permutations in the literature, due to Billey-Jockusch-Stanley, Krattenthaler, and Mansour-Deng-Du. How different are they? Denoting them B,K,M respectively, we show that M = B \circ L = K \circ L' where L is the classical Kreweras-Lalanne involution on Dyck paths and L', also an involution, is a sort of derivative of L. Thus K^{-1} \circ B, a measure of the difference between B and K, is the product of involutions L' \circ L and turns out to be a very curious bijection: as a permutation on Dyck n-paths it is an nth root of the "reverse path" involution. The proof of this fact boils down to a geometric argument involving pairs of nonintersecting lattice paths.

Abstract:$k$-Dyck paths differ from ordinary Dyck paths by using an up-step of length $k$. We analyze at which level the path is after the $s$-th up-step and before the $(s+1)$st up-step. In honour of Rainer Kemp who studied a related concept 40 years ago the terms \textsc{max}-terms and \textsc{min}-terms are used. Results are obtained by an appropriate use of trivariate generating functions; practically no combinatorial arguments are used.
