Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations of dense and rarefied fluids comprising small chain molecules in chemically patterned nano-channels predict a novel switching from Poiseuille to plug flow along the channel. We also demonstrate behavior akin to the lotus effect for a nanodrop on a chemically patterned substrate. Our results show that one can control and exploit the behavior of fluids at the nanoscale using chemical patterning.

A Novel Far-Field Nanoscopic Velocimetry for Nanofluidics

Abstract:For the first time we have been able to measure the flow velocity profile for nanofluidics with a spatial resolution better than 70 nm. Due to the diffraction resolution barrier, traditional optical methods have so far failed in measuring the velocity profile in a nanocapillary or a closed nanochannel without an opened sidewall. A novel optical point measurement method is presented which applies stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy to laser induced fluorescence photobleaching anemometer (LIFPA) techniques to measure flow velocity. Herein we demonstrate this far-field nanoscopic velocimetry method by measuring the velocity profile in a nanocapillary with an inner diameter of 360 nm. The closest measuring point to the wall is about 35 nm. This method opens up a new class of functional measuring techniques for nanofluidics and for nanoscale flows from the wall.

Abstract:A significant growth of research in nanofluidics is achieved over the past decade, but the field is still facing considerable challenges toward the transition from the current physics-centered stage to the next application-oriented stage. Many of these challenges are associated with materials science, so the field of nanofluidics offers great opportunities for materials scientists to exploit. In addition, the use of unusual effects and ultrasmall confined spaces of well-defined nanofluidic environments would offer new mechanisms and technologies to manipulate nanoscale objects as well as to synthesize novel nanomaterials in the liquid phase. Therefore, nanofluidics will be a new arena for materials science. In the past few years, burgeoning progress has been made toward this trend, as overviewed in this article, including materials and methods for fabricating nanofluidic devices, nanofluidics with functionalized surfaces and functional material components, as well as nanofluidics for manipulating nanoscale materials and fabricating new nanomaterials. Many critical challenges as well as fantastic opportunities in this arena lie ahead. Some of those, which are of particular interest, are also discussed.

Emerging Abnormal Phenomena in Confined Nanofluidics

Abstract:Nanofluidics is an emerging field that investigates the properties and transport behavior of fluids confined at the nanometer or even sub-nanometer level. Its development is of great importance for interfacial catalysis, biological science, energy conversion, and other fields. Recent developments in micro-nano processing have allowed the scale of confined channels to be down to the molecular or even atomic level, in which the structure of the molecule or the ion is not negligible. Therefore the confined fluid exhibits properties and behaviors that are different from those of the bulk phase, such as nonlinear transport, Coulomb blockade and ultrafast water transport. In this chapter, we summarize the anomalies of ion, water, and biological molecules under confinement. The first part introduces the current research techniques for confined fluids, followed by discussing the abnormal phenomena of ions, water, and molecules in confined fluids, respectively. Finally, we outline the applications and future challenges of confined nanofluidics.

Abstract:Nanofluidics has firmly established itself as a new field in fluid mechanics, as novel properties have been shown to emerge in fluids at the nanometric scale. Thanks to recent developments in fabrication technology, artificial nanofluidic systems are now being designed at the scale of biological nanopores. This ultimate step in scale reduction has pushed the development of new experimental techniques and new theoretical tools, bridging fluid mechanics, statistical mechanics and condensed matter physics. This review is intended as a toolbox for fluids at the nanometre scale. After presenting the basic equations that govern fluid behaviour in the continuum limit, we will show how these equations break down and new properties emerge in molecular scale confinement.

Abstract:Fast transport of water inside carbon nanostructures, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene-based nanomaterials, has addressed persistent challenges in nanofluidics. Recently reported new mechanisms show that the coupling between phonons in these materials and fluids under-confinement could lead to the enhancement of the diffusion coefficient. These developments have led to the emerging field of mechano-nanofluidics, which studies the effects of mechanical actuations on the properties of nanofluidics. In this tutorial review, we provide the basic concepts and development of mechano-nanofluidics. We also summarize the current status of experimental observations of fluids flow in individual nanochannels and theoretical interpretations. Finally, we briefly discuss the challenges and opportunities for the utilization of mechano-nanofluidics, such as controlling the fluid flow through regulating the coupling between materials and fluids.

Abstract:Under nanoconfinement, fluid molecules and ions exhibit radically different configurations, properties, and energetics from those of their bulk counterparts. These unique characteristics of nanoconfined fluids, along with the unconventional interactions with solids at the nanoscale, have provided many opportunities for engineering innovation. With properly designed nanoconfinement, several nanofluidic systems have been devised in our group in the past several years to achieve energy conversion functions with high efficiencies. This review is dedicated to elucidating the unique characteristics of nanofluidics, introducing several novel nanofluidic systems combining nanoporous materials with functional fluids, and to unveiling their working mechanisms. In all these systems, the ultra-large surface area available in nanoporous materials provides an ideal platform for seamlessly interfacing with nanoconfined fluids, and efficiently converting energy between the mechanical, thermal, and electrical forms. These systems have been demonstrated to have great potentials for applications including energy dissipation/absorption, energy trapping, actuation, and energy harvesting. Their efficiencies can be further enhanced by designing efforts based upon improved understanding of nanofluidics, which represents an important addition to classical fluid mechanics. Through the few systems exemplified in this review, the emerging research field of nanoscale fluid mechanics may promote more exciting nanofluidic phenomena and mechanisms, with increasing applications by encompassing aspects of mechanics, materials, physics, chemistry, biology, etc.

Abstract:With various promising applications demonstrated, nanofluidics has been of broad research interest in the past decade. As nanofluidics matures from a proof of concept towards practical applications, it faces two major barriers: expensive nanofabrication and ultra-low throughput. To date, the only material that enables nanofabrication-free, high-throughput, yet precisely controllable nanofluidic systems is the close-packed nanoparticle array, i.e. nanofluidic crystals. Recently, significant progress in nanofluidics has been made using nanofluidic crystals, including high-current ionic diodes, high-power energy harvesters, efficient bio-molecular separation, and facile biosensors. Nanofluidic crystals are seen as a key to applying nanofluidic concepts to real-world applications. In this review, we introduce the key concepts and models in nanofluidic crystals, summarize the fabrication methods, and discuss the various applications of nanofluidic crystals in depth, highlighting their advantages in terms of simple fabrication, low cost, flexibility, and high throughput. Finally, we provide our perspectives on the future of nanofluidic crystals and their potential impacts.

Abstract:Acoustic actuation of fluids at small scales may finally enable a comprehensive lab-on-a-chip revolution in microfluidics, overcoming long-standing difficulties in fluid and particle manipulation on-chip. In this comprehensive review, we examine the fundamentals of piezoelectricity, piezoelectric materials, and transducers; revisit the basics of acoustofluidics; and give the reader a detailed look at recent technological advances and current scientific discussions in the discipline. Recent achievements are placed in the context of classic reports for the actuation of fluid and particles via acoustic waves, both within sessile drops and closed channels. Other aspects of micro/nano acoustofluidics are examined: atomization, translation, mixing, jetting, and particle manipulation in the context of sessile drops and fluid mixing and pumping, particle manipulation, and formation of droplets in the context of closed channels, plus the most recent results at the nanoscale. These achievements will enable applications across the disciplines of chemistry, biology, medicine, energy, manufacturing, and we suspect a number of others yet unimagined. Basic design concepts and illustrative applications are highlighted in each section, with an emphasis on lab-on-a-chip applications.

Abstract:Schematic representation of the multiscale methods and the applications of nanofluidics at different scales. Nanofluidics research has achieved a significant growth over the past few years. New phenomena of nanoscaled fluid flows are being reported continuously, such as altered liquid properties, fast flows, and ion rectification, which attract tremendous research interests in many fields, such as membrane science, biological nanochips, and energy conventions. Multiscale simulations, covering quantum mechanics, molecular mechanics, coarse‐grained particle dynamics (mesoscale), and continuum mechanics, have shown their great advantages in studying the new frontier of nanofluidics in academia and industry, which is in range of 1–1000 nm scale. These simulations provide the opportunity to visualize the nanofluidics applications existed in the minds of scientists and then guide experimental design to realize the potential of nanofluidics applications in industrial. In this article, we attempt to give a comprehensive review of nanofluidics from the aspect of multiscale simulations. The methodology and role of various simulation methods used in the investigation of nanofluidics are presented. The properties and characteristics of nanofluidics are summarized. The applications of nanofluidics in recent years are emphasized. And then the development of simulation methods and the application of nanofluidics are also prospected. Microfluidics has the potential to influence subject areas from chemical synthesis and biological analysis to optics and information technology. But the field is still at an early stage of development. Even as the basic science and technological demonstrations develop, other problems must be addressed: choosing and focusing on initial applications, and developing strategies to complete the cycle of development, including commercialization. The solutions to these problems will require imagination and ingenuity.

Abstract:Nanoconfined fluids (NCFs), which are confined in nanospaces, exhibit distinctive nanoscale effects, including surface effects, small-size effects, quantum effects, and others. The continuous medium hypothesis in fluid mechanics is not valid in this context because of the comparable characteristic length of spaces and molecular mean free path, and accordingly, the classical continuum theories developed for the bulk fluids usually cannot describe the mass and energy transport of NCFs. In this Perspective, we summarize the nanoscale effects on the thermodynamics, mass transport, flow dynamics, heat transfer, phase change, and energy transport of NCFs and highlight the related representative works. The applications of NCFs in the fields of membrane separation, oil and gas production, energy harvesting and storage, and biological engineering are especially indicated. Currently, the theoretical description framework of NCFs is still missing, and it is expected that this framework can be established by adopting the classical continuum theories with the consideration of nanoscale effects.

Abstract:Liquid confined in a nanochannel or nanotube has exhibited a superfast transport phenomenon, providing an ideal heat and mass transfer platform to meet the increasingly stringent challenge of thermal management in developing high-power-density nanoelectronics and nanochips. However, understanding the thermal transport of confined liquid is currently lacking and is speculated to be fundamentally different from that of bulk counterparts due to the unprecedented thermodynamics of liquid in nanoconfined environments. Here, we report that the thermal conductivity of water confined in a silica nanotube is nearly 2-fold as that of bulk status. Further molecular dynamics simulations reveal that this unusual enhancement originates from the densification and reorientation of local hydrogen bonds close to the nanotubes. Thermal-confinement scaling law is established and quantitatively supported by comprehensive simulations with remarkable agreement. Our findings lay a theoretical foundation for designing nanofluidics-enabled cooling strategies and devices.

Abstract:Thanks to its unique features at the nanoscale, nanofluidics, the study and application of fluid flow in nanochannels/nanopores with at least one characteristic size smaller than 100 nm, has enabled the occurrence of many interesting transport phenomena and has shown great potential in both bio- and energy-related fields. The unprecedented growth of this research field is apparently attributed to the rapid development of micro/nanofabrication techniques. In this review, we summarize recent activities and achievements of nanofabrication for nanofluidic devices, especially those reported in the past four years. Three major nanofabrication strategies, including nanolithography, microelectromechanical system based techniques, and methods using various nanomaterials, are introduced with specific fabrication approaches. Other unconventional fabrication attempts which utilize special polymer properties, various microfabrication failure mechanisms, and macro/microscale machining techniques are also presented. Based on these fabrication techniques, an inclusive guideline for materials and processes selection in the preparation of nanofluidic devices is provided. Finally, technical challenges along with possible opportunities in the present nanofabrication for nanofluidic study are discussed.

Abstract:<p>As the continuing integration and size deflation of component dimensions in electronic circuits and increase in the number of transistors in modern microprocessor chips, especially for heat dissipation of micro/nano scale devise, traditionally used single phase fluid cannot meet the requirements for highly efficient heat transfer, which thus frequently results in the damage of electrical devices. Consequently, thermal conductivity enhancement of working fluids is of great significance for advanced thermal energy conservation and conversion. Nanofluids, which possess a superior thermal conductive performance, are studied towards an alternative to the traditionally used working fluids, have attracted ample attention within the past decades. In this paper, firstly, we summarized the recent progress in the preparation of nanofluids, in particular for a method involving a covalent concerning reorganization or generation; subsequently, the utilization of nanofluids in hitherto unsummerized micro/nano scale heat and mass transfer fields, especially for some chemistry relating applications were discussed. All works demonstrated in this review are aiming at clarifying the fact that advanced material technologies are required in preparation of recent nanofluids on the premise of continuing harsh energy transfer situation; on the other hand, nanofluids were also able to offer insights for novel micro/nano scale energy transportation which has not yet been reviewed before.</p>

The generation and development of nanofluidics have been accompanied by the emergency of new fluidic phenomena and novel devices. The unique mass transport properties and potential applications in nanofluidics have attracted wide attention. To date, nanochannel devices have shown great application prospects in DNA sequencing, single molecule sensing, energy storage and conversion, and ionic gating. In this review, we systematically summarize the fabrication and modification of nanochannel membrane, and their applications in the bioanalysis. The developments and challenges of nanochannel membranes are also prospected.
