Abstract:In this paper we prove the homotopy lifting property for symmetric products $SP_{m}(X)$ and $F_{m}(X)$, with $X$ a Hausdorff topological space. Furthermore, we introduce a new tool, the theory of topological puzzles, to get a useful decomposition of $X^{m}$.

Abstract:In Homotopy Type Theory, few constructions have proved as troublesome as the smash product. While its definition is just as direct as in classical mathematics, one quickly realises that in order to define and reason about functions over iterations of it, one has to verify an exponentially growing number of coherences. This has led to crucial results concerning smash products remaining open. One particularly important such result is the fact that smash products form a (1-coherent) symmetric monoidal product on the universe of pointed types. This fact was used, without a complete proof, by e.g. Brunerie in his PhD thesis to construct the cup product on integral cohomology and is, more generally, a fundamental result in traditional algebraic topology. In this paper, we salvage the situation by introducing a simple informal heuristic for reasoning about functions defined over iterated smash products. We then use the heuristic to verify e.g. the hexagon and pentagon identities, thereby obtaining a proof of symmetric monoidality. We also provide a formal statement of the heuristic in terms of an induction principle concerning the construction of homotopies of functions defined over iterated smash products. The key results presented here have been formalised in the proof assistant Cubical Agda.

Delocalized equivariant coholomogy of symmetric products

Abstract:For any closed complex manifold $X$, we calculate the Poincar\'{e} and Hodge polynomials of the delocalized equivariant cohomology $H^*(X^n, S_n)$ with a grading specified by physicists. As a consequence, we recover a special case of a formula for the elliptic genera of symmetric products in Dijkgraaf-Moore-Verlinde-Verlinde \cite{Dij-Moo-Ver-Ver}. For a projective surface X, our results matches with the corresponding formulas for the Hilbert scheme of X^[n]. We also give geometric construction of an action of a Heisenberg superalgebra on $\sum_{n \geq 0} H^{*,*}(X^n, S_n)$, imitating the constructions for equivariant K-theory by Segal \cite{Seg} and Wang \cite{Wan}. There is a corresponding version for $H^{-*, *}$.

Abstract:A polyhedral product is a natural subspace of a Cartesian product that is specified by a simplicial complex. The modern formalism arose as a generalization of the spaces known as moment-angle complexes which were developed within the nascent subject of toric topology. This field, which began as a topological approach to toric geometry and aspects of symplectic geometry, has expanded rapidly in recent years. The investigation of polyhedral products and their homotopy theoretic properties has developed to the point where they are studied in various fields of mathematics far removed from their origin. In this survey, we provide a brief historical overview of the development of this subject, summarize many of the main results and describe applications.

Abstract:In this paper we explore new relations between Algebraic Topology and the theory of Hopf Algebras. For an arbitrary topological space $X$, the loop space homology $H_*(\Omega\Sigma X; \coefZ)$ is a Hopf algebra. We introduce a new homotopy invariant of a topological space $X$ taking for its value the isomorphism class (over the integers) of the Hopf algebra $H_*(\Omega\Sigma X; \coefZ)$. This invariant is trivial if and only if the Hopf algebra $H_*(\Omega\Sigma X; \coefZ)$ is isomorphic to a Lie-Hopf algebra, that is, to a primitively generated Hopf algebra. We show that for a given $X$ these invariants are obstructions to the existence of a homotopy equivalence $\Sigma X\simeq \Sigma^2Y$ for some space $Y$. Further on, using the notion of Hopf algebras, we establish new structural properties of the cohomology ring, in particular, of the cup product. For example, using the fact that the suspension of a polyhedral product $X$ is a double suspension, we obtain a strong condition on the cohomology ring structure of $X$. This gives an important application in toric topology. For an algebra to be realised as the cohomology ring of a moment-angle manifold $\Z_P$ associated to a simple polytope $P$, we found an obstruction in the Hopf algebra $H_*(\Omega\Sigma \Z_P)$. In addition, we use homotopy decompositions to study particular Hopf algebras.

String topology on the space of paths with endpoints in a submanifold

Abstract:In this article we consider algebraic structures on the homology of the space of paths in a manifold with endpoints in a submanifold. The Pontryagin-Chas-Sullivan product on the homology of this space had already been investigated by Hingston and Oancea for a particular example. We consider this product as a special case of a more general construction where we consider pullbacks of the path space of a manifold under arbitrary maps. The product on the homology of this space as well as the module structure over the Chas-Sullivan ring are shown to be invariant under homotopies of the respective maps. This in particular implies that the Pontryagin-Chas-Sullivan product as well as the module structure on the space of paths with endpoints in a submanifold are isomorphic for two homotopic embeddings of the submanifold. Moreover, for null-homotopic embeddings of the submanifold this yields nice formulas which we can be used to compute the product and the module structure explicitly. We show that in the case of a null-homotopic embedding the homology of the space of paths with endpoints in a submanifold is even an algebra over the Chas-Sullivan ring. This property does not hold in general as we show with a counterexample.

Symmetric products of Galois-Maximal varieties

Abstract:The main result of this paper is the proof that all the symmetric products of a finite Galois-Maximal space are Galois-Maximal spaces. This applies to the special case of real algebraic varieties, solving the problem first stated by Biswas and D'Mello in \cite{biswas&d'mello:symmetric_products_M-curves} about symmetric products of Maximal curves. We also give characterisations of these spaces and state a new definition that generalises to a larger class of spaces. Then, we extend the characterisation in terms of the Borel cohomology given in \cite{us} to the new family. Finally, we introduce the notion of cohomological stability and cohomological splitting, provide a systematic treatment and relate them with the properties of being a Maximal or Galois-Maximal space. These cohomological properties play an important role in the proof of our main theorem.

Abstract:We develop a new spectral sequence in order to calculate Hochschild homology of smash biproducts (also called twisted tensor products) of unital associative algebras $A\# B$ provided one of $A$ or $B$ has Hochschild dimension less than 2. We use this spectral sequence to calculate Hochschild homology of quantum tori, multiparametric quantum affine spaces, quantum complete intersections, quantum Weyl algebras, deformed completed Weyl algebras, and finally the algebra $M_q(2)$ of quantum $2\times 2$-matrices.

Abstract:Intersection homology of Goresky and MacPherson can be defined from the Deligne sheaf, obtained from truncations of complexes of sheaves. As intersection homology is not the homology of a particular space, the search for a family of spaces whose homologies have properties analogous to intersection homology has developed. For some stratified spaces, M. Banagl has introduced such a family by using a topological truncation: the original link is replaced by a truncation of its homological Moore resolution. In this work, we study the dual approach in the Eckmann-Hilton sense: we consider the stratified space obtained by replacing the original link by a Postnikov approximation. The main result is that our construction restores the space constructed by Gajer to establish an intersection Dold-Thom theorem. We are conducting this study within the general framework of Quinn's homotopically stratified spaces.

As special cases, we show that loop spaces of moment-angle manifolds associated to triangulations of $S^2$ and $S^3$ decompose as a product of spheres and loops on spheres.

Abstract:Solid modules over $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{F}_p$, introduced by Clausen and Scholze, are a well-behaved variant of complete topological vector spaces that forms a symmetric monoidal Grothendieck abelian category. For a discrete field $k$, we construct the category of ultrasolid $k$-modules, which specialises to solid modules over $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{F}_p$. In this setting, we show some commutative algebra results like an ultrasolid variant of Nakayama's lemma. We also explore higher algebra in the form of animated and $\mathbb{E}_\infty$ ultrasolid $k$-algebras, and their deformation theory. We focus on the subcategory of complete profinite $k$-algebras, which we prove is contravariantly equivalent to equal characteristic formal moduli problems with coconnective tangent complex.

Noncommutative Motives I: A Universal Characterization of the Motivic Stable Homotopy Theory of Schemes

Abstract:Let $\V$ be a symmetric monoidal model category and let $X$ be an object in $\V$. From this we can construct a new symmetric monoidal model category $Sp^{\Sigma}(\V,X)$ of symmetric spectra objects in $\V$ with respect to $X$, together with a left Quillen monoidal map $\V\to Sp^{\Sigma}(\V,X)$ sending $X$ to an invertible object. In this paper we use the recent developments in the subject of Higher Algebra to understand the nature of this construction. Every symmetric monoidal model category has an underlying symmetric monoidal $(\infty,1)$-category and the first notion should be understood as a mere "presentation" of the second. Our main result is the characterization of the underlying symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category of $Sp^{\Sigma}(\V,X)$, by means of a universal property inside the world of symmetric monoidal $(\infty,1)$-categories. In the process we also describe the link between the construction of ordinary spectra and the one of symmetric spectra. As a corollary, we obtain a precise universal characterization for the motivic stable homotopy theory of schemes with its symmetric monoidal structure. This characterization trivializes the problem of finding motivic monoidal realizations and opens the way to compare the motivic theory of schemes with other motivic theories. As an application we provide a new approach to the theory of noncommutative motives by constructing a stable motivic homotopy theory for the noncommutative spaces of Kontsevich. For that we introduce an analogue for the Nisnevich topology in the noncommutative setting. Our universal property for the classical theory for schemes provides a canonical monoidal map towards these new noncommutative motives and allows us to compare the two theories.

Abstract:We introduce polyhedral products in an $\infty$-categorical setting. We generalize a splitting result by Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen, and Gitler that determines the stable homotopy type of the a polyhedral product. We also introduce a motivic refinement of moment-angle complexes and use the splitting result to compute cellular $\mathbb{A}^1$-homology, and $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristics.

Abstract:Abstract We use Hodge theoretic methods to study homotopy types of complex projective manifolds with arbitrary fundamental groups. The main tool we use is the schematization functor $X \mapsto (X\otimes \mathbb {C})^{\mathrm {sch}}$ , introduced by the third author as a substitute for the rationalization functor in homotopy theory in the case of non-simply connected spaces. Our main result is the construction of a Hodge decomposition on $(X\otimes \mathbb {C})^{\mathrm {sch}}$ . This Hodge decomposition is encoded in an action of the discrete group $\mathbb {C}^{\times \delta }$ on the object $(X\otimes \mathbb {C})^{\mathrm {sch}}$ and is shown to recover the usual Hodge decomposition on cohomology, the Hodge filtration on the pro-algebraic fundamental group, and, in the simply connected case, the Hodge decomposition on the complexified homotopy groups. We show that our Hodge decomposition satisfies a purity property with respect to a weight filtration, generalizing the fact that the higher homotopy groups of a simply connected projective manifold have natural mixed Hodge structures. As applications we construct new examples of homotopy types which are not realizable as complex projective manifolds and we prove a formality theorem for the schematization of a complex projective manifold.

Abstract:We classify homotopes of classical symmetric spaces (studied in Part I of this work). Our classification uses the fibered structure of homotopes: they are fibered as symmetric spaces, with flat fibers, over a non-degenerate base; the base spaces correspond to inner ideals in Jordan pairs. Using that inner ideals in classical Jordan pairs are always complemented (in the sense defined by O. Loos and E. Neher), the classification of homotopes is obtained by combining the classification of inner ideals with the one of isotopes of a given inner ideal.
On the string topology of symmetric spaces of higher rank

Abstract:The homology of the free and the based loop space of a compact globally symmetric space can be studied through explicit cycles. We use cycles constructed by Bott and Samelson and by Ziller to study the string topology coproduct and the Chas-Sullivan product on compact symmetric spaces. We show that the Chas-Sullivan product for compact symmetric spaces is highly non-trivial for any rank and we prove that there are many non-nilpotent classes whose powers correspond to the iteration of closed geodesics. Moreover, we show that the based string topology coproduct is trivial for compact symmetric spaces of higher rank and we study the implications of this result for the string topology coproduct on the free loop space.

Abstract:In this paper, we compute the homology group and cohomology algebra of various polyhedral product objects uniformly from the point of view of diagonal tensor product. As applications, we introduce the polyhedral product method into commutative algebra and show that the homotopy types of polyhedral product spaces depend on not only the homotopy type of each summand pair but also on the character coproduct of the pair.

Abstract:Given two convex polytopes, the join, the cartesian product and the direct sum of them are well understood. In this paper we extend these three kinds of products to abstract polytopes and introduce a new product, called the topological product, which also arises in a natural way. We show that these products have unique prime factorization theorems. We use this to compute the automorphism group of a product in terms of the automorphism groups of the factors and show that (non trivial) products are almost never regular or two-orbit polytopes. We finish the paper by studying the monodromy group of a product, show that such a group is always an extension of a symmetric group, and give some examples in which this extension splits.

Abstract:A Hilbert bimodule is a right Hilbert module X over a C*-algebra A together with a left action of A as adjointable operators on X. We consider families X = {X_s :s\in P} of Hilbert bimodules, indexed by a semigroup P, which are endowed with a multiplication which implements isomorphisms X_s\otimes_A X_t \to X_{st}; such a family is a called a product system. We define a generalized Cuntz- Pimsner algebra O_X, and we show that every twisted crossed product of A by P can be realized as O_X for a suitable product system X. Assuming P is quasi- lattice ordered in the sense of Nica, we analyze a certain Toeplitz extension T_{cov}(X) of O_X by embedding it in a crossed product B_P \times_{\tau,X} P which has been ``twisted'' by X; our main Theorem is a characterization of the faithful representations of B_P \times_{\tau,X} P.

Abstract:We build free, bigraded bidifferential algebra models for the forms on a complex manifold, with respect to a strong notion of quasi-isomorphism and compatible with the conjugation symmetry. This answers a question of Sullivan. The resulting theory naturally accomodates higher operations involving double primitives. As applications, we obtain various refinements of the homotopy groups, sensitive to the complex structure. Under a simple connectedness assumption, one obtains minimal models which are unique up to isomorphism and allow for explicit computations of the new invariants.
