Abstract:We show that, while Minesweeper is NP-complete, its hyperbolic variant is in P. Our proof does not rely on the rules of Minesweeper, but is valid for any puzzle based on satisfying local constraints on a graph embedded in the hyperbolic plane.

Abstract:We study three problems related to the computational complexity of the popular game Minesweeper. The first is consistency: given a set of clues, is there any arrangement of mines that satisfies it? This problem has been known to be NP-complete since 2000, but our framework proves it as a side effect. The second is inference: given a set of clues, is there any cell that the player can prove is safe? The coNP-completeness of this problem has been in the literature since 2011, but we discovered a flaw that we believe is present in all published results, and we provide a fixed proof. Finally, the third is solvability: given the full state of a Minesweeper game, can the player win the game by safely clicking all non-mine cells? This problem has not yet been studied, and we prove that it is coNP-complete.

Abstract:In the Maker-Breaker positional game, Maker and Breaker take turns picking vertices of a hypergraph $H$, and Maker wins if and only if he claims all the vertices of some edge of $H$. This paper provides a general framework to study Maker-Breaker games, centered on the notion of danger at a vertex $x$, which is a subhypergraph representing an urgent threat that Breaker must hit with his next pick if Maker picks $x$. We then apply this concept in hypergraphs of rank 3, providing a structural characterization of the winner with perfect play as well as optimal strategies for both players based on danger intersections. We construct a family $\mathcal{F}$ of dangers such that a hypergraph $H$ of rank 3 is a Breaker win if and only if the $\mathcal{F}$-dangers at $x$ in $H$ intersect for all $x$. By construction of $\mathcal{F}$, this will mean that $H$ is a Maker win if and only if Maker can guarantee the appearance, within the first three rounds of play, of a very specific elementary subhypergraph (on which Maker easily wins). This last result has a consequence on the algorithmic complexity of deciding which player has a winning strategy on a given hypergraph: this problem, which is known to be PSPACE-complete on 6-uniform hypergraphs, is in polynomial time on hypergraphs of rank 3. This validates a conjecture by Rahman and Watson. Another corollary of our result is that, if Maker has a winning strategy on a hypergraph of rank 3, then he can ensure to claim an edge in a number of rounds that is logarithmic in the number of vertices. Note: The present updated version of this deposit provides a counterexample to a similar result which was incorrectly claimed recently (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2209.11202" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2209.11202">arXiv:2209.11202</a>).

Abstract:Hashiwokakero, or simply Hashi, is a Japanese single-player puzzle played on a rectangular grid with no standard size. Some cells of the grid contain a circle, called island, with a number inside it ranging from one to eight. The remaining positions of the grid are empty. The player must connect all of the islands by drawing a series of horizontal or vertical bridges between them, respecting a series of rules: the number of bridges incident to an island equals the number indicated in the circle, at most two bridges are incident to any side of an island, bridges cannot cross each other or pass through islands, and each island must eventually be reachable from any other island. In this paper, we present some complexity results and relationships between Hashi and well-known graph theory problems. We give a formulation of the problem by means of an integer linear mathematical programming model, and apply a branch-and-cut algorithm to solve the model in which connectivity constraints are dynamically generated. We also develop a puzzle generator. Our experiments on 1440 Hashi puzzles show that the algorithm can consistently solve hard puzzles with up to 400 islands.

Abstract:In this paper we show that the Mastermind Satisfiability Problem (MSP) is NP-complete. The Mastermind is a popular game which can be turned into a logical puzzle called Mastermind Satisfiability Problem in a similar spirit to the Minesweeper puzzle. By proving that MSP is NP-complete, we reveal its intrinsic computational property that makes it challenging and interesting. This serves as an addition to our knowledge about a host of other puzzles, such as Minesweeper, Mah-Jongg, and the 15-puzzle.
ASP-Completeness of Hamiltonicity in Grid Graphs, with Applications to Loop Puzzles

Abstract:We prove that Hamiltonicity in maximum-degree-3 grid graphs (directed or undirected) is ASP-complete, i.e., it has a parsimonious reduction from every NP search problem (including a polynomial-time bijection between solutions). As a consequence, given k Hamiltonian cycles, it is NP-complete to find another; and counting Hamiltonian cycles is #P-complete. If we require the grid graph's vertices to form a full $m \times n$ rectangle, then we show that Hamiltonicity remains ASP-complete if the edges are directed or if we allow removing some edges (whereas including all undirected edges is known to be easy). These results enable us to develop a stronger "T-metacell" framework for proving ASP-completeness of rectangular puzzles, which requires building just a single gadget representing a degree-3 grid-graph vertex. We apply this general theory to prove ASP-completeness of 38 pencil-and-paper puzzles where the goal is to draw a loop subject to given constraints: Slalom, Onsen-meguri, Mejilink, Detour, Tapa-Like Loop, Kouchoku, Icelom; Masyu, Yajilin, Nagareru, Castle Wall, Moon or Sun, Country Road, Geradeweg, Maxi Loop, Mid-loop, Balance Loop, Simple Loop, Haisu, Reflect Link, Linesweeper; Vertex/Touch Slitherlink, Dotchi-Loop, Ovotovata, Building Walk, Rail Pool, Disorderly Loop, Ant Mill, Koburin, Mukkonn Enn, Rassi Silai, (Crossing) Ichimaga, Tapa, Canal View, Aqre, and Paintarea. The last 14 of these puzzles were not even known to be NP-hard. Along the way, we prove ASP-completeness of some simple forms of Tree-Residue Vertex-Breaking (TRVB), including planar multigraphs with degree-6 breakable vertices, or with degree-4 breakable and degree-1 unbreakable vertices.

Complexity of Maker-Breaker Games on Edge Sets of Graphs

Abstract:We initiate the study of the algorithmic complexity of Maker-Breaker games played on the edge sets of general graphs. We mainly consider the perfect matching game and the $H$-game. Maker wins if she claims the edges of a perfect matching in the first, and a copy of a fixed graph $H$ in the second. We prove that deciding who wins the perfect matching game and the $H$-game is PSPACE-complete, even for the latter in small-diameter graphs if $H$ is a tree. Toward finding the smallest graph $H$ for which the $H$-game is PSPACE-complete, we also prove that such an $H$ of order 51 and size 57 exists. We then give several positive results for the $H$-game. As the $H$-game is already PSPACE-complete when $H$ is a tree, we mainly consider the case where $H$ belongs to a subclass of trees. In particular, we design two linear-time algorithms, both based on structural characterizations, to decide the winners of the $P_4$-game in general graphs and the $K_{1,\ell}$-game in trees. Then, we prove that the $K_{1,\ell}$-game in any graph, and the $H$-game in trees are both FPT parameterized by the length of the game, notably adding to the short list of games with this property, which is of independent interest. Another natural direction to take is to consider the $H$-game when $H$ is a cycle. While we were unable to resolve this case, we prove that the related arboricity-$k$ game is polynomial-time solvable. In particular, when $k=2$, Maker wins this game if she claims the edges of any cycle.

Cops and Robber on Hyperbolic Manifolds

Abstract:The Cops and Robber game on geodesic spaces is a pursuit-evasion game with discrete steps which captures the behavior of the game played on graphs, as well as that of continuous pursuit-evasion games. One of the outstanding open problems about the game on graphs is to determine which graphs embeddable in a surface of genus $g$ have largest cop number. It is known that the cop number of genus $g$ graphs is $O(g)$ and that there are examples whose cop number is $\tilde\Omega(\sqrt{g}\,)$. The same phenomenon occurs when the game is played on geodesic surfaces. In this paper we obtain a surprising result about the game on a surface with constant curvature. It is shown that two cops have a strategy to come arbitrarily close to the robber, independently of the genus. We also discuss upper bounds on the number of cops needed to catch the robber. Our results generalize to higher-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds.

Parks: A Doubly Infinite Family of NP-Complete Puzzles and Generalizations of A002464

Abstract:The Parks Puzzle is a paper-and-pencil puzzle game that is classically played on a square grid with different colored regions (the parks). The player needs to place a certain number of "trees" in each row, column, and park such that none are adjacent, even diagonally. We define a doubly-infinite family of such puzzles, the $(c, r)$-tree Parks puzzles, where there need be $c$ trees per column and $r$ per row. We then prove that for each $c$ and $r$ the set of $(c, r)$-tree puzzles is NP-complete. For each $c$ and $r$, there is a sequence of possible board sizes $m \times n$, and the number of possible puzzle solutions for these board sizes is a doubly-infinite generalization of OEIS sequence A002464, which itself describes the case $c = r = 1$. This connects the Parks puzzle to chess-based puzzle problems, as the sequence describes the number of ways to place non-attacking kings on a chessboard so that there is exactly one in each column and row (i.e. to place non-attacking dragon kings in shogi). These findings add yet another puzzle to the set of chess puzzles and expands the list of known NP-complete problems described.

The general position avoidance game and hardness of general position games

Abstract:Given a graph $G$, a set $S$ of vertices in $G$ is a general position set if no triple of vertices from $S$ lie on a common shortest path in $G$. The general position achievement/avoidance game is played on a graph $G$ by players A and B who alternately select vertices of $G$. A selection of a vertex by a player is a legal move if it has not been selected before and the set of selected vertices so far forms a general position set of $G$. The player who picks the last vertex is the winner in the general position achievement game and is the loser in the avoidance game. In this paper, we prove that the general position achievement/avoidance games are PSPACE-complete even on graphs with diameter at most 4. For this, we prove that the \textit{misère} play of the classical Node Kayles game is also PSPACE-complete. As positive results, we obtain linear time algorithms to decide the winning player of the general position avoidance game in rook's graphs, grids, cylinders, and lexicographic products with complete second factors.

Abstract:This paper is part of the general project of proof mining, developed by Kohlenbach. By "proof mining" we mean the logical analysis of mathematical proofs with the aim of extracting new numerically relevant information hidden in the proofs. We present logical metatheorems for classes of spaces from functional analysis and hyperbolic geometry, like Gromov hyperbolic spaces, ${\mathbb R}$-trees and uniformly convex hyperbolic spaces. Our theorems are adaptations to these structures of previous metatheorems of Gerhardy and Kohlenbach, and they guarantee a-priori, under very general logical conditions, the existence of uniform bounds. We give also an application in nonlinear functional analysis, more specifically in metric fixed-point theory. Thus, we show that the uniform bound on the rate of asymptotic regularity for the Krasnoselski-Mann iterations of nonexpansive mappings in uniformly convex hyperbolic spaces obtained in a previous paper is an instance of one of our metatheorems.

A Graphical Search Problem (GSP), denoted $\Pi(G[X],\gamma)$, consists of finding $Y$, where $Y \subseteq X$ and $Y$ satisfies the predicate $\gamma$ in $G$. The subset $Y$ is a solution of the problem $\Pi(G[X],\gamma)$. Using the P-completeness of the Decision Problem associated to MIS, we prove that every GSP that satisfies A1 is solvable in Polynomial Time if and only if it satisfies A2. On the other hand, let HCP be the GSP that consists of finding a Hamiltonian cycle of the graph $G$. HCP satisfies A1, but does not satisfies A2. Since the Decision Problem associated with HCP is NP-Complete, we get $P \not = NP$.

Abstract:We build off the game, NimG to create a version named Neighboring Nim. By reducing from Geography, we show that this game is PSPACE-hard. The games created by the reduction share strong similarities with Undirected (Vertex) Geography and regular Nim, both of which are in P. We show how to construct PSPACE-complete versions with nim heaps *1 and *2. This application of graphs can be used as a form of game sum with any games, not only Nim.

Abstract:Hackenbush is a two player game, played on a graph with coloured edges where players take it in turns to remove edges of their own colour. It has been shown that under normal play rules Red-Blue Hackenbush (all edges are coloured either red or blue) is NP-hard. We will show that Red-Blue Hackenbush is in P, but that Red-Blue-Green Hackenbush is NP-Hard, when played under mis\`ere rules.
Shortest paths on polymatroids and hypergraphic polytopes

Abstract:Base polytopes of polymatroids, also known as generalized permutohedra, are polytopes whose edges are parallel to a vector of the form $\mathbf{e}_i - \mathbf{e}_j$. We consider the following computational problem: Given two vertices of a generalized permutohedron $P$, find a shortest path between them on the skeleton of $P$. This captures many known flip distance problems, such as computing the minimum number of exchanges between two spanning trees of a graph, the rotation distance between binary search trees, the flip distance between acyclic orientations of a graph, or rectangulations of a square. We prove that this problem is $NP$-hard, even when restricted to very simple polymatroids in $\mathbb{R}^n$ defined by $O(n)$ inequalities. Assuming $P\not= NP$, this rules out the existence of an efficient simplex pivoting rule that performs a minimum number of nondegenerate pivoting steps to an optimal solution of a linear program, even when the latter defines a polymatroid. We also prove that the shortest path problem is inapproximable when the polymatroid is specified via an evaluation oracle for a corresponding submodular function, strengthening a recent result by Ito et al. (ICALP'23). More precisely, we prove the $APX$-hardness of the shortest path problem when the polymatroid is a hypergraphic polytope, whose vertices are in bijection with acyclic orientations of a given hypergraph. The shortest path problem then amounts to computing the flip distance between two acyclic orientations of a hypergraph. On the positive side, we provide a polynomial-time approximation algorithm for the problem of computing the flip distance between two acyclic orientations of a hypergraph, where the approximation factor is the maximum codegree of the hypergraph. Our result implies an exact polynomial-time algorithm for the flip distance between two acyclic orientations of any linear hypergraph.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of minimizing a polynomial function with literals over all binary points, often referred to as pseudo-Boolean optimization. We investigate the fundamental limits of computation for this problem by providing new necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for tractability. On one hand, we obtain the first intractability results for pseudo-Boolean optimization problems on signed hypergraphs with bounded rank, in terms of the treewidth of the intersection graph. On the other hand, we introduce the nest-set gap, a new hypergraph-theoretic notion that enables us to move beyond hypergraph acyclicity, and obtain a polynomial-size extended formulation for the pseudo-Boolean polytope of a class of signed hypergraphs whose underlying hypergraphs contain beta-cycles.

Abstract:The ordinary game of Nim has a long history and is well-known in the area of combinatorial game theory. The solution to the ordinary game of Nim has been known for many years and lends itself to numerous other solutions to combinatorial games. Nim was extended to graphs by taking a fixed graph with a playing piece on a given vertex and assigning positive integer weight to the edges that correspond to a pile of stones in the ordinary game of Nim. Players move alternately from the playing piece across incident edges, removing weight from edges as they move. This paper solves Nim on hypercubes in the unit weight case completely. We briefly discuss the arbitrary weight case and its ties to known results.

Abstract:This paper proves that the winning strategy for Hauser’s version of Hironaka’s polyhedra game is almost arbitrary. The winning strategy and its associated invariants are based on an algorithm of matrix triangulations and matrix diagonalizations. It is proved that if a set sequence constitutes a winning strategy for the game, then so does every set sequence containing it. The same holds for Hironaka’s version of the game if every move is permissible.
