Abstract:Proof-of-Work (PoW) blockchains have emerged as a robust and effective consensus mechanism in open environments, leading to widespread deployment with numerous cryptocurrency platforms and substantial investments. However, the commonly deployed PoW implementations are all based on solving cryptographic puzzles. Researchers have been pursuing the compelling idea of replacing cryptopuzzles with useful computing tasks for over a decade, in face of the substantial computational capacity of blockchain networks and the global pursuit of a more sustainable IT infrastructure. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of the prerequisites for alternative classes of tasks. We provide insight into the effect of introducing "usefulness" and of transitioning to task classes other than cryptopuzzles. Having distilled the prerequisites, we use them to examine proposed designs from existing literature. Finally, we discuss pertinent techniques and present research gaps in the current state-of-the-art.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of protocols called Proofs of Work or Knowledge PoWorKs. In a PoWorK, a prover can convince a verifier that she has either performed work or that she possesses knowledge of a witness to a public statement without the verifier being able to distinguish which of the two has taken place. We formalize PoWorK in terms of three properties, completeness, f-soundness and indistinguishability where f is a function that determines the tightness of the proof of work aspect and present a construction that transforms 3-move HVZK protocols into 3-move public-coin PoWorKs. To formalize the work aspect in a PoWorKï¾¿protocol we define cryptographic puzzles that adhere to certain uniformity conditions, which may also be of independent interest. We instantiate our puzzles in the random oracle RO model as well as via constructing \"dense\" versions of suitably hard one-way functions. We then showcase PoWorKï¾¿protocols by presenting a number of applications. We first show how non-interactive PoWorKs can be used to reduce spam email by forcing users sending an e-mail to either prove to the mail server they are approved contacts of the recipient or to perform computational work. As opposed to previous approaches that applied proofs of work to this problem, our proposal of using PoWorKs is privacy-preserving as it hides the list of the receiver's approved contacts from the mail server. Our second application, shows how PoWorK can be used to compose cryptocurrencies that are based on proofs of work \"Bitcoin-like\" with cryptocurrencies that are based on knowledge relations these include cryptocurrencies that are based on \"proof of stake\", and others. The resulting PoWorK-based cryptocurrency inherits the robustness properties of the underlying two systems while PoWorK-indistinguishability ensures a uniform population of miners. Finally, we show that PoWorKï¾¿protocols imply straight-line quasi-polynomial simulatable arguments of knowledge and based on our construction we obtain an efficient straight-line concurrent 3-move statistically quasi-polynomial simulatable argument of knowledge.

Abstract:We propose the formal study of governed blockchains that are owned and controlled by organizations and that neither create cryptocurrencies nor provide any incentives to solvers of cryptographic puzzles. We view such approaches as frameworks in which system parts, such as the cryptographic puzzle, may be instantiated with different technology. Owners of such a blockchain procure puzzle solvers as resources they control, and use a mathematical model to compute optimal parameters for the cryptographic puzzle mechanism or other parts of the blockchain. We illustrate this approach with a use case in which blockchains record hashes of financial process transactions to increase their trustworthiness and that of their audits. For Proof of Work as cryptographic puzzle, we develop a detailed mathematical model to derive MINLP optimization problems for computing optimal Proof of Work configuration parameters that trade off potentially conflicting aspects such as availability, resiliency, security, and cost in this governed setting. We demonstrate the utility of such a mining calculus by solving some instances of this problem. This experimental validation is strengthened by statistical experiments that confirm the validity of random variables used in formulating our mathematical model. We hope that our work may facilitate the creation of domain-specific blockchains for a wide range of applications such as trustworthy information in Internet of Things systems and bespoke improvements of legacy financial services.

Abstract:Bitcoin mining is a wasteful and resource-intensive process. To add a block of transactions to the blockchain, miners spend a considerable amount of energy. The Bitcoin protocol, named 'proof of work' (PoW), resembles a lottery and the underlying computational work is not useful otherwise. In this paper, we describe a novel 'proof of useful work' (PoUW) protocol based on training a machine learning model on the blockchain. Miners get a chance to create new coins after performing honest ML training work. Clients submit tasks and pay all training contributors. This is an extra incentive to participate in the network because the system does not rely only on the lottery procedure. Using our consensus protocol, interested parties can order, complete, and verify useful work in a distributed environment. We outline mechanisms to reward useful work and punish malicious actors. We aim to build better AI systems using the security of the blockchain.

Abstract:Blockchains have recently gained popularity thanks to their ability to record "digital truth". They are designed to keep persistence, security, and avoid attacks which is useful for many applications. However, they are still problematic in their energy consumption, governance, and scalability Current solutions either require vast computing power via Proof-of-Work (PoW) or cannot directly utilize computing power as a resource in virtual mining. Here, we propose incentive-based protocols that use competitions to integrate computing power into blockchains. We introduce Proof-of-Accumulated-Work (PoAW): miners compete in costumer-submitted jobs, accumulate recorded work whenever they are successful, and, over time, are remunerated. The underlying competition replaces the standard hash puzzle-based competitions of PoW. A competition is managed by a dynamically-created small masternode network (dTMN) of invested miners. dTMNs allow for scalability as we do not need the entire network to manage the competition. Using careful design on incentives, our system preserves security, avoids attacks, and offers new markets to miners. When there are no costumers the system converges into a standard protocol. Our proposed solution improves the way by which the blockchain infrastructure works and makes use of its computing power. We also discuss how the protocol can be used by fields that require solving difficult optimization problems, such as Artificial Intelligence and Pattern Recognition in Big Data.

Abstract:Proof-of-Work is a consensus algorithm where miners solve cryptographic puzzles to mine blocks and obtain a reward through some Block Reward Mechanism (BRM). PoW blockchain faces the problem of centralization due to the formation of mining pools, where miners mine blocks as a group and distribute rewards. The rationale is to reduce the risk (variance) in reward while obtaining the same expected block reward. In this work, we address the problem of centralization due to mining pools in PoW blockchain. We propose a two-player game between the new miner joining the system and the PoW blockchain system.

Abstract:In this paper, we first present a theoretical analysis model on the Proof-of-Work (PoW) for cryptocurrency blockchain. Based on this analysis, we present a new type of PoW, which relies on the hardness of solving a set of random quadratic equations over the finite field GF(2). We will present the advantages of such a PoW, in particular, in terms of its impact on decentralization and the incentives involved, and therefore demonstrate that this is a new good alternative as a new type for PoW in blockchain applications.

Abstract:Proof of Work (PoW) blockchains burn a lot of energy. Proof-of-work algorithms are expensive by design and often only serve to compute blockchains. In some sense, carbon-based and non-carbon based regional electric power is fungible. So the total carbon and non-carbon electric power mix plays a role. Thus, generally PoW algorithms have large CO$_2$ footprints solely for computing blockchains. A proof of technology is described towards replacing hashcash or other PoW methods with a lottery and proof-of-VM (PoVM) emulation. PoVM emulation is a form of PoW where an autonomous blockchain miner gets a lottery ticket in exchange for providing a VM (virtual Machine) for a specified period. These VMs get their jobs from a job queue. Managing and ensuring, by concensus, that autonomous PoVMs are properly configured and running as expected gives several gaps for a complete practical system. These gaps are discussed. Our system is similar to a number of other blockchain systems. We briefly survey these systems. This paper along with our proof of technology was done as a senior design project.

Abstract:In a blockchain system, consensus protocol as an incentive and security mechanism, is to ensure the participants to build the block honestly and effectively. There are different consensus protocols for blockchain, like Proof of work (PoW), Proof of Stake (PoS), Proof of Space (PoSpace), Proof of Activities etc. But most of these consensus protocols are not designed for doing some useful jobs for society because of too much competition and scalability limitation. Massive electric power and computing resources, including CPU, RAM, storage and sensors have been wasted to run blockchain network based on these consensus protocols. Current frameworks and middleware for building decentralised applications (dApps) are largely limited to simple and less useful jobs. In this paper, we present Proofware which is designed for developers to build their dApps easily with existing public/crowd-based computing resources. Under Proofware, developers can develop and test their own Proof of Useful Work (PoUW) consensus protocols. Also, rather than depending on a centralised accounting system, each dApp has an embedded currency system to keep the whole incentive system decentralised, fair, transparent, stable and sustainable. Based on Proofware, we have built a crowd based video sharing application, called OurTube, as a case study. By the OurTube example, it has shown Proofware significantly improves the productivity to build crowd-based computing system with the features of cost-effectiveness, anti-censorship, elasticity and financial sustainability.

Abstract:Existing popular Blockchain consensus mechanisms, such as Proof-of-Work (PoW), are designed to record existing transactions. However, they play no role in the transaction generation process. Many blockchain applications require high computation costs to generate and record transactions (e.g., in the case of PoW). In this paper, we propose an approach that allows us to utilize the consensus generation process to generate transactions by solving complex problems. We call it the Proof-of-Merit (PoM) mechanism - this approach decentralizes the transaction-generation process and selects proposed solutions to the problem based on their merit. We illustrate the PoM mechanism in the context of ridesharing, where a group of solvers provide solutions to the problem of matching riders with drivers. Moreover, we define two objectives - efficiency and equity - to evaluate PoM. We demonstrate PoMâ€™s performance and nuanced properties using agent-based simulation. We show how Decentralized Control Parameter (DCP) influences the intrinsic tradeoffs between efficiency and equity. Further, we explore how to find the proper value of DCP towards achieving a desirable balance of the two objectives.

Abstract:Bitcoin introduces a revolutionary decentralized consensus mechanism. However, Bitcoin-derived consensus mechanisms applied to public blockchain are inadequate for the deployment scenarios of budding consortium blockchain. We propose a new consensus algorithm, Proof of Vote (POV). The consensus is coordinated by the distributed nodes controlled by consortium partners which will come to a decentralized arbitration by voting. The key idea is to establish different security identity for network participants, so that the submission and verification of the blocks are decided by the agencies' voting in the league without the depending on a third-party intermediary or uncontrollable public awareness. Compared with the fully decentralized consensus-Proof of Work (POW), POV has controllable security, convergence reliability, only one block confirmation to achieve the transaction finality, and low-delay transaction verification time.

Abstract:The increasingly distributed energy system poses a serious challenge to traditional centralized management schemes. Blockchain is a promising technique for enabling trusted collaboration without a trusted central authority. Still, blockchains are limited to being applied in the energy system as they are not specialized for mathematical optimization. To fill this gap, Chen et al. propose a blockchain consensus mechanism (proof of solution, PoSo) tailored to support mathematical optimization problems in energy systems, which replaces the meaningless mathematical puzzle in proof of work (PoW) with a meaningful optimization problem. The inspiration comes from the fact that both the solutions to the puzzle and to an optimization problem are hard to find but easy to verify.

Abstract:Security analysis of blockchain technology is an active domain of research. There has been both cryptographic and game-theoretic security analysis of Proof-of-Work (PoW) blockchains. Prominent work includes the cryptographic security analysis under the Universal Composable framework and Game-theoretic security analysis using Rational Protocol Design. These security analysis models rely on stricter assumptions that might not hold. In this paper, we analyze the security of PoW blockchain protocols. We first show how assumptions made by previous models need not be valid in reality, which attackers can exploit to launch attacks that these models fail to capture. These include Difficulty Alternating Attack, under which forking is possible for an adversary with less than 0.5 mining power, Quick-Fork Attack, a general bound on selfish mining attack and transaction withholding attack. Following this, we argue why previous models for security analysis fail to capture these attacks and propose a more practical framework for security analysis pRPD. We then propose a framework to build PoW blockchains PRAGTHOS, which is secure from the attacks mentioned above. Finally, we argue that PoW blockchains complying with the PRAGTHOS framework are secure against a computationally bounded adversary under certain conditions on the reward scheme.

Abstract:<p>While cryptocurrencies and blockchain applications continue to gain popularity, their energy cost is evidently becoming unsustainable. In most instances, the main cost comes from the required amount of energy for the Proof-of-Work, and this cost is inherent to the design. In addition, useless costs from discarded work (e.g., the so-called Forks) and lack of scalability (in number of users and in rapid transactions) limit their practical effectiveness. In this paper, we present an innovative scheme which eliminates the nonce and thus the burden of the Proof-of-Work which is the main cause of the energy waste in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. We prove that our scheme guarantees a tunable and bounded average number of simultaneous mining whatever the size of the population in competition, thus by making the use of nonce-based techniques unnecessary, achieves scalability without the cost of consuming a large volume of energy. The technique used in the proof of our scheme is based on the analogy of the analysis of a green leader election. The additional difference with Proof-of-Work schemes (beyond the suppression of the nonce field that is triggering most of the waste), is the introduction of (what we denote as) "empty blocks" which aim are to call regular blocks following a staircase set of values. Our scheme reduces the risk of Forks and provides tunable scalability for the number of users and the speed of block generation. We also prove using game theoretical analysis that our scheme is resilient to unfair competitive investments (e.g., "51 percent" attack) and block nursing.</p>

Abstract:The protocol for cryptocurrencies can be divided into three parts, namely consensus, wallet, and networking overlay. The aim of the consensus part is to bring trustless rational peer-to-peer nodes to an agreement to the current status of the blockchain. The status must be updated through valid transactions. A proof-of-work (PoW) based consensus mechanism has been proven to be secure and robust owing to its simple rule and has served as a firm foundation for cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Specialized mining devices have emerged, as rational miners aim to maximize profit, and caused two problems: i) the re-centralization of a mining market and ii) the huge energy spending in mining. In this paper, we aim to propose a new PoW called Error-Correction Codes PoW (ECCPoW) where the error-correction codes and their decoder can be utilized for PoW. In ECCPoW, puzzles can be intentionally generated to vary from block to block, leading to a time-variant puzzle generation mechanism. This mechanism is useful in repressing the emergence of the specialized mining devices. It can serve as a solution to the two problems of recentralization and energy spending.

Abstract:Blockchain systems often employ proof-of-work consensus protocols to validate and add transactions into hashchains. These protocols stimulate competition among miners in solving cryptopuzzles (e.g. SHA-256 hash computation in Bitcoin) in exchange for a monetary reward. Here, we model mining as an all-pay auction, where miners' computational efforts are interpreted as bids, and the allocation function is the probability of solving the cryptopuzzle in a single attempt with unit (normalized) computational capability. Such an allocation function captures how blockchain systems control the difficulty of the cryptopuzzle as a function of miners' computational abilities (bids). In an attempt to reduce mining costs, we investigate designing a mining auction mechanism which induces a logit equilibrium amongst the miners with choice distributions that are unilaterally decreasing with costs at each miner. We show it is impossible to design a lenient allocation function that does this. Specifically, we show that there exists no allocation function that discourages miners to bid higher costs at logit equilibrium, if the rate of change of difficulty with respect to each miner's cost is bounded by the inverse of the sum of costs at all the miners.

Abstract:Using Bitcoin as a reference, we've created a new consensus mechanism named PoR (Proof of Rest). We built a blockchain with six core nodes for testing and simulated certain user transactions, which proved to be efficient. PoR is an asynchronous network that solves the massive waste of computing power in the Bitcoin system, but still retains the ability to resist forks. Compared with the PBFT consensus mechanism, the requirements for the network are also lower. But it would be a bit tricky when changing the total number of core nodes.

Abstract:Traditional centralized optimization and management schemes may be incompatible with a changing energy system whose structure is becoming increasingly distributed. This challenge can hopefully be addressed by blockchain. However, existing blockchains have not been well prepared to integrate mathematical optimization, which plays a key role in many energy system applications. Here we propose a blockchain consensus mechanism tailored to support mathematical optimization problems, called Proof of Solution (PoSo). PoSo mimics Proof of Work (PoW) by replacing the meaningless mathematical puzzle in PoW with a meaningful optimization problem. This is inspired by the fact that both the solutions to the puzzle and to an optimization problem are hard to find but easy to verify. We show the security and necessity of PoSo by using PoSo to enable energy dispatch and trading for two integrated energy systems. The results show that compared with existing optimization schemes, PoSo ensures that only the optimal solution is accepted and executed by participants. Further, compared with existing blockchains, PoSo can seamlessly incorporate mathematical optimization and minimize the workload associated with searching and verifying the optimum.

Abstract:The study of interactive proofs in the context of distributed network computing is a novel topic, recently introduced by Kol, Oshman, and Saxena [PODC 2018]. In the spirit of sequential interactive proofs theory, we study the power of distributed interactive proofs. This is achieved via a series of results establishing trade-offs between various parameters impacting the power of interactive proofs, including the number of interactions, the certificate size, the communication complexity, and the form of randomness used. Our results also connect distributed interactive proofs with the established field of distributed verification. In general, our results contribute to providing structure to the landscape of distributed interactive proofs.

Abstract:Interactive-proof games model the scenario where an honest party interacts with powerful but strategic provers, to elicit from them the correct answer to a computational question. Interactive proofs are increasingly used as a framework to design protocols for computation outsourcing. Existing interactive-proof games largely fall into two categories: either as games of cooperation such as multi-prover interactive proofs and cooperative rational proofs, where the provers work together as a team; or as games of conflict such as refereed games, where the provers directly compete with each other in a zero-sum game. Neither of these extremes truly capture the strategic nature of service providers in outsourcing applications. How to design and analyze non-cooperative interactive proofs is an important open problem. In this paper, we introduce a mechanism-design approach to define a multi-prover interactive-proof model in which the provers are rational and non-cooperative---they act to maximize their expected utility given others' strategies. We define a strong notion of backwards induction as our solution concept to analyze the resulting extensive-form game with imperfect information. Our protocols provide utility gap guarantees, which are analogous to soundness gap in classic interactive proofs. At a high level, a utility gap of u means that the protocol is robust against provers that may not care about a utility loss of 1/u. We fully characterize the complexity of our proof system under different utility gap guarantees. For example, we show that with a polynomial utility gap, the power of non-cooperative rational interactive proofs is exactly P^NEXP.
