Abstract:In this paper, we consider the zero-viscosity limit of the 2D steady Navier-Stokes equations in $(0,L)\times\mathbb{R}^+$ with non-slip boundary conditions. By estimating the stream-function of the remainder, we justify the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer expansions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the vanishing viscosity limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the Navier friction boundary condition. To simplify the expansion of solutions in terms of the viscosity, we shall only consider the case that the slip length a in the Navier boundary condition is a power of the viscosity epsilon, alpha=epsilon(gamma). First, by multi-scale analysis we formally deduce that gamma = 1/2 is critical in determining the boundary layer behavior. When gamma > 1/2, the boundary layer appears in the zero-th order terms of the expansion of solutions, and satisfies the same boundary value problem for the nonlinear Prandtl equations as in the non-slip case, when gamma = 1/2, the boundary layer also appears in the zero-th order terms of solutions, and satisfies the nonlinear Prandtl equations but with a Robin boundary condition for the tangential velocity profile, and when gamma < 1/2, the boundary layer appears in the order O(epsilon(1-2 gamma)) terms of solutions, and satisfies a boundary value problem for the linearized Prandtl equations. Secondly, we justify rigorously the asymptotic behavior of the vanishing viscosity limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with anisotropic viscosities by using the energy method, when the slip length is larger than the square root of the vertical viscosity. Even though the boundary layer appears in the lower order terms of solutions and satisfies a linear problem, the vorticity of flow is unbounded in the vanishing viscosity limit.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the zero-viscosity limit of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in a half-space with non-slip boundary condition. We justify the Prandtl boundary layer expansion for the analytic data: the compressible Navier-Stokes equations can be approximated by the compressible Euler equations away from the boundary, and by the compressible Prandtl equation near the boundary.

Abstract:This paper concerns the large Reynold number limits and asymptotic behaviors of solutions to the 2D steady Navier-Stokes equations in an infinitely long convergent channel. It is shown that for a general convergent infinitely long nozzle whose boundary curves satisfy curvature-decreasing and any given finite negative mass flux, the Prandtl's viscous boundary layer theory holds in the sense that there exists a Navier-Stokes flow with no-slip boundary condition for small viscosity, which is approximated uniformly by the superposition of an Euler flow and a Prandtl flow. Moreover, the singular asymptotic behaviors of the solution to the Navier-Stokes equations near the vertex of the nozzle and at infinity are determined by the given mass flux, which is also important for the constructions of the Prandtl approximation solution due to the possible singularities at the vertex and non-compactness of the nozzle. One of the key ingredients in our analysis is that the curvature-decreasing condition on boundary curves of the convergent nozzle ensures that the limiting inviscid flow is pressure favourable and plays crucial roles in both the Prandtl expansion and the stability analysis.

Abstract:A central problem in the mathematical analysis of fluid dynamics is the asymptotic limit of the fluid flow as viscosity goes to zero. This is particularly important when boundaries are present since vorticity is typically generated at the boundary as a result of boundary layer separation. The boundary layer theory, developed by Prandtl about a hundred years ago, has become a standard tool in addressing these questions. Yet at the mathematical level, there is still a lack of fundamental understanding of these questions and the validity of the boundary layer theory. In this article, we review recent progresses on the analysis of Prandtl's equation and the related issue of the zero-viscosity limit for the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation. We also discuss some directions where progress is expected in the near future.

Abstract:The proposal of this note is to derive the equations of boundary layers in the small viscosity limit for the two-dimensional incompressible Navier–Stokes equations defined in a curved bounded domain with the non-slip boundary condition. By using curvilinear coordinate system in a neighborhood of boundary, and the multi-scale analysis we deduce that the leading profiles of boundary layers of the incompressible flows in a bounded domain still satisfy the classical Prandtl equations when the viscosity goes to zero, which are the same as for the flows defined in the half space.

Abstract:We study the well-posedness of the boundary layer problems for compressible Navier–Stokes equations. Under the non-negative assumption on the laminar flow, we investigate the local spatial existence of solution for the steady equations. Meanwhile, we also obtain the solution for the unsteady case with monotonic laminar flow, which exists for either long time small space interval or short time large space interval. Moreover, the limit of these solutions with vanishing Mach number is considered. Our proof is based on the comparison theory for the degenerate parabolic equations obtained by the Crocco transformation or von Mises transformation.

Abstract:We establish the validity of the Euler Prandtl approximation for solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the half plane with the Dirichlet boundary conditions, in the vanishing viscosity limit, for initial data which are analytic only near the boundary, and Sobolev smooth away from the boundary. Our proof does not require higher order correctors, and works directly by estimating an -type norm for the vorticity of the error term in the expansion Navier-Stokes Euler Prandtl). An important ingredient in the proof is the propagation of local analyticity for the Euler equation, a result of independent interest

Abstract:We consider the validity of Prandtl boundary layer expansion of solutions to the initial boundary value problem for inhomogeneous incompressible magnetohydrodynamics equations in the half-plane when both viscosity and resistivity coefficients tend to zero, where the no-slip boundary condition is imposed on velocity while the perfectly conducting condition is given on magnetic field. Since there exist strong boundary layers, the essential difficulty in establishing the uniform L-infinity estimates of the error functions comes from the unboundedness of vorticity of strong boundary layers. Under the assumptions that the viscosity and resistivity coefficients take the same order of a small parameter and the initial tangential component of magnetic field has a positive lower bound near the boundary, we prove the validity of Prandtl boundary layer ansatz in L-infinity sense in Sobolev framework. Compared with the homogeneous incompressible case considered in [33], there exists a strong boundary layer of density. Consequently, some suitable functionals should be designed and the elaborated co-normal energy estimates will be involved in analysis due to the variation of density and the interaction between the density and velocity. Methods and Applications of Analysis

Abstract:In this note, we review our recent study on boundary layer problems in compressible non-isentropic flows with non-slip boundary condition for the velocity, in the small viscosity and heat conductivity limit. By multi-scale analysis, we derive the problems of viscous layer profiles and thermal layer profiles for different scales of viscosity and heat conductivity, from which we obtain the interaction mechanism of viscous layers and thermal layers. Then, when the viscosity goes to zero slower than or at the same rate as the heat conductivity, we give a well-posedness result of the twodimensional viscous layer problem, which is the Prandtl type equations coupled with a degenerated parabolic equation, in the class of tangential velocity being strictly monotonic in the normal variable. Last, when the viscosity goes to zero faster than the heat conductivity, we study the stability of the thermal layer problem at a shear flow in two or three space variables, which is an inviscid Prandtl type equations coupled with a degenerated parabolic equation.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the L ∞ ∩ L 2 stability of Prandtl expansions of the shear flow type as (U(y/√(ν)),0) for the initial perturbation in the Gevrey class, where U ( y ) is a monotone and concave function and ν is the viscosity coefficient. To this end, we develop the direct resolvent estimate method for the linearized Orr-Sommerfeld operator instead of the Rayleigh-Airy iteration method. Our method could be applied to the other relevant problems of hydrodynamic stability.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior for the incompressible anisotropic Navier–Stokes equations with the non-slip boundary condition in a half space of ${\mathbb{R}^3}$ when the vertical viscosity goes to zero. Firstly, by multi-scale analysis, we formally deduce an asymptotic expansion of the solution to the problem with respect to the vertical viscosity, which shows that the boundary layer appears in the tangential velocity field and satisfies a nonlinear parabolic–elliptic coupled system. Also from the expansion, it is observed that away from the boundary the solution of the anisotropic Navier–Stokes equations formally converges to a solution of a degenerate incompressible Navier–Stokes equation. Secondly, we study the well-posedness of the problems for the boundary layer equations and then rigorously justify the asymptotic expansion by using the energy method. We obtain the convergence results of the vanishing vertical viscosity limit, that is, the solution to the incompressible anisotropic Navier–Stokes equations tends to the solution to degenerate incompressible Navier–Stokes equations away from the boundary, while near the boundary, it tends to the boundary layer profile, in both the energy space and the L ∞ space.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the validity of Prandtl boundary layer expansion for the solutions to two dimensional (2D) steady viscous incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations in a domain $\{(X, Y)\in[0, L]\times\mathbb{R}_+\}$ with a moving flat boundary $\{Y=0\}$. As a direct consequence, even though there exist strong boundary layers, the inviscid type limit is still established for the solutions of 2D steady viscous incompressible MHD equations in Sobolev spaces provided that the following three assumptions hold: the hydrodynamics and magnetic Reynolds numbers take the same order in term of the reciprocal of a small parameter $\epsilon$, the tangential component of the magnetic field does not degenerate near the boundary and the ratio of the strength of tangential component of magnetic field and tangential component of velocity is suitably small. And the error terms are estimated in $L^\infty$ sense.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the zero-viscosity limit of the Navier-Stokes equations in a half space with the Navier friction boundary condition $$ (\beta u^{\varepsilon}-\varepsilon^{\gamma}\partial_y u^{\varepsilon})|_{y=0}=0, $$ where $\beta$ is a constant and $\gamma\in (0,1]$. In the case of $\gamma=1$, the convergence to the Euler equations and the Prandtl equation with the Robin boundary condition is justified for the analytic data. In the case of $\gamma\in (0,1)$, the convergence to the Euler equations and the linearized Prandtl equation is justified for the data in the Gevrey class $\frac 1 {\gamma}$.

Abstract:We investigate the existence and the zero viscosity limit of steady compressible shear flow with Navier-slip boundary condition in the absence of any external force in a two-dimension domain $\Omega=(0,L)\times(0,2)$. More precisely, under the assumption that the Mach number $\eta<\va^{\f12+}$ and $L\ll1$, we prove the existence of smooth solutions to steady compressible Naiver-Stokes equations near plane Poiseuille-Couette flow as well as the convergence of the solutions obtained above to the solutions of steady incompressible Euler equations when the viscous $\va$ tends to zero.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the local well-posedness of the Prandtl boundary layer equations that describe the behavior of the boundary layer in the small viscosity limit of the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations with nonslip boundary condition. Under the strictly monotonic assumption on the tangential velocity in the normal variable, we apply the Nash-Moser-Hormander iteration scheme and further develop the energy method introduced in [R. Alexander et al., J. Amer. Math. Soc., DOI:S0894-0347(2014)00813-4] to obtain the well-posedness of the equations locally in time.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of circularly symmetric solutions to the initial boundary valueproblem of the nonisentropic compressibleNavier--Stokes equations in a two-dimensional exterior domain with impermeable boundary conditions when theviscosities and the heat conduction coefficienttend to zero at the same rate. By multiscale analysis, we obtain that away from the boundary the nonisentropiccompressible viscous flow can be approximated by thecorresponding inviscid flow, and near the boundary there are boundary layers for the angular velocity, density,and temperature in the leading order expansions ofsolutions, while the radial velocity and pressure do not have boundary layers in the leading order. The boundarylayers of velocity and temperature are described by a nonlinear parabolic system. We prove the stability ofboundary layers and rigorously justify the asymptotic behavior of solutions in the $L^{\infty}$ space for the smallviscosities and heat-conduction limit in the Lagrangian coordinates, as long as the strength of the boundarylayers is suitably small. Finally, we show that the similar asymptotic behavior of the small viscosities andheat conduction limit holds in the Eulerian coordinates for the compressible nonisentropic viscous flow.

Abstract:By using the paralinearization technique, we prove the well-posedness of the Prandtl equation for monotonic data in anisotropic Sobolev space with exponential weight and low regularity. The proof is very elementary, thus is expected to provide a new possible way for the zero-viscosity limit problem of the Navier–Stokes equations with the non-slip boundary condition.

Abstract:In this paper we study the zero-viscosity limit of $2$-D Boussinesq equations with vertical viscosity and zero diffusivity, which is a nonlinear system with partial dissipation arising in atmospheric sciences and oceanic circulation. The domain is taken as $\mathbb{R}_+^2$ with Navier-type boundary. We prove the nonlinear stability of the approximate solution constructed by boundary layer expansion in conormal Sobolev space. The expansion order and convergence rates for the inviscid limit are also identified in this paper. Our paper extends a partial zero-dissipation limit results of Boussinesq system with full dissipation by Chae D. $[Adv. Math. 203, no. 2, 2006]$ in the whole space to the case with partial dissipation and Navier boundary in the half plane.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limit for the 3D nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a slip boundary condition. We establish the local well-posedness of the strong solutions for initial boundary value problems for such systems. Furthermore, the vanishing viscosity limit process is established and a strong rate of convergence is obtained as the boundary of the domain is flat. In addition, it is needed to add some additional condition for density to match well the boundary condition.

Abstract:A semi-explicit formula of solution to the boundary layer system for thermal layer derived from the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with the non-slip boundary condition when the viscosity coefficients vanish is given, in particular in three space dimension. In contrast to the inviscid Prandtl system studied by [7] in two space dimension, the main difficulty comes from the coupling of the velocity field and the temperature field through a degenerate parabolic equation. The convergence of these boundary layer equations to the inviscid Prandtl system is justified when the initial temperature goes to a constant. Moreover, the time asymptotic stability of the linearized system around a shear flow is given, and in particular, it shows that in three space dimension, the asymptotic stability depends on whether the direction of tangential velocity field of the shear flow is invariant in the normal direction respective to the boundary.
