We will begin by introducing the earliest documented knowing for calculating the square root of a negative quantity, attributed to the Greek mathematician Heron of Alexandria. From there, we will progress through history to explore the formal concept of complex numbers given by William Rowan Hamilton.

We find it necessary to insist upon the recognition of this truth, because articles and books on the history of elementary mathematics yield much information on how the notion of negative numbers gradually arose, but it is impossible to find any indication as to how the notion of positive numbers came about, and also as to the role that was played by numbers without signs in the history of mathematics.

Abstract:In this thesis, we consider geometric properties of vector bundles arising from algebraic and Hermitian geometry. On vector bundles in algebraic geometry, such as ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles, we are able to construct positive Hermitian metrics in different senses(e.g. Griffiths-positive, Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive) by L2-method and deduce many new vanishing theorems for them by analytic method instead of the Le Potier-Leray spectral sequence method. On Hermitian manifolds, we find that the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. We can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and also for complex vector bundles over Hermitian manifolds by their second Ricci curvature tensors. We also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:This paper studies non-proper negative imaginary systems. First, the concept of negative imaginary transfer functions that may have poles at the origin and infinity is introduced. Then, a generalized lemma is presented to provide a sufficient condition to characterize the non-proper negative imaginary properties of systems. The generalized lemma is given in terms of complex variable s in the quarter domain of analyticity. Compared to previous results, our result removes the symmetric restriction. Also, a new relationship is established between (lossless) negative imaginary and (lossless) positive real transfer function matrices by using a minor decomposition. The results in this paper give us the possibility to address non-proper and non-symmetric descriptor systems with negative imaginary frequency response. Several examples are presented to illustrate the results.

Abstract:This paper studies the connection between discrete-time negative imaginary and continuous-time negative imaginary functions. Firstly, we analyse differences between two restatements that are claimed to provide necessary and sufficient conditions for systems to be discrete-time positive real. The conclusion is that one is equivalent to the definition of discrete-time positive real while the other one is not. Then, by means of the bilinear transformation, a connection between discrete-time negative imaginary and continuous-time negative imaginary functions is established. A new proof is provided for the discrete-time negative imaginary lemma by applying the connection. Several numerical examples illustrate the developed theory.

Abstract:The mathematical analysis was conceived in XVII century in Newton and Leibniz works. The problem of logical rigor in definitions was considered by Arnauld and Nicole in "Logique ou l'art de penser". They were the first, who distinguished between the volume of the concept and its structure. They created a tradition which was strong in math till XIX century, especially in France. The definitions were in binomial nomenclature mostly, but another type of definition appears in Cantor theory - it was the descriptive definition. As it used to be in human sciences, first the object had only one characteristic, then as the research continued it enriched with new characteristics so we have full-fledged conception. In this way the mathematics acquired its own creativity. In 1915 Lusin laid down a new principle of the descriptive theory: a structural characteristic is done, the analytical form had to be found. New schools of descriptive set theory appeared in Moscow in the first half of the 20th century.

Abstract:The note is concerned with linear negative imaginary systems. First, a previously established Negative Imaginary Lemma is shown to remain true even if the system transfer function matrix has poles on the imaginary axis. This result is achieved by suitably extending the definition of negative imaginary transfer function matrices. Secondly, a necessary and sufficient condition is established for the internal stability of the positive feedback interconnections of negative imaginary systems. Meanwhile, some properties of linear negative imaginary systems are developed. Finally, an undamped flexible structure example is presented to illustrate the theory.

Abstract:In this study, we extend the theory of negative imaginary (NI) systems to a nonlinear framework using a frequency-domain approach. The extended notion is completely characterized via a finite-frequency integration over a “kernel function” on energy-bounded input and output signal pairs. The notion is closely related to and carefully contrasted with the well-studied extension of negative imaginariness — the theory of counterclockwise dynamics. Conditions for feedback stability of the proposed nonlinear NI systems are then developed based on the technique of integral quadratic constraints. Examples and simulations on feedback interconnections of typical nonlinear systems are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness.

Abstract:In mathematics education, students’ difficulties with negative numbers are well known. To explain these difficulties, researchers traditionally refer to obstacles raised by the concept of NEGATIVE NUMBERS itself throughout its historical evolution. In order to improve our understanding, I propose to take into consideration another point of view, based on Vygotsky's principles, which define a strong relationship between signs such as language or symbols and cognitive development. I show how it is of great interest to consider students’ difficulties with negatives in the light of the use of symbols, in particular the minus sign. I describe the results of an empirical study about students’ strategies in solving arithmetical equations with negatives. My analysis shows that the problems raised by the presence of negatives in the equations are attributable to students’ very restricted and often inadequate use of the minus sign, which prevents them from finding a negative solution or making sense of it.

In particular, the paper surveys some recent results on the use of algebraic Riccati equations in testing whether a system is negative imaginary and in synthesizing state feedback controllers which make the closed loop system negative imaginary. The paper also surveys the use of Riccati equation methods in the control of quantum linear systems including coherent $H^\infty$ control.

Abstract:Mathematical reasoning skills are a desired outcome of many introductory physics courses, particularly calculus-based physics courses. Positive and negative quantities are ubiquitous in physics, and the sign carries important and varied meanings. Novices can struggle to understand the many roles signed numbers play in physics contexts, and recent evidence shows that unresolved struggle can carry over to subsequent physics courses. The mathematics education research literature documents the cognitive challenge of conceptualizing negative numbers as mathematical objects--both for experts, historically, and for novices as they learn. We contribute to the small but growing body of research in physics contexts that examines student reasoning about signed quantities and reasoning about the use and interpretation of signs in mathematical models. In this paper we present a framework for categorizing various meanings and interpretations of the negative sign in physics contexts, inspired by established work in algebra contexts from the mathematics education research community. Such a framework can support innovation that can catalyze deeper mathematical conceptualizations of signed quantities in the introductory courses and beyond.

Abstract:The paper is concerned with the notion of lossless negative imaginary systems and their stabilization using a strictly negative imaginary controller through positive feedback. Firstly, some properties of lossless negative imaginary transfer functions are studied. Secondly, a Lossless Negative Imaginary Lemma is given which establishes conditions on matrices appearing in a minimal state-space realization that are necessary and sufficient for a transfer function to be lossless negative imaginary. Thirdly, a necessary and sufficient condition is developed for the stabilization of a lossless. negative imaginary system by a strictly negative imaginary controller. Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the theory.

Abstract:The Dirac negative energy sea introduced the concept of antimatter, and explained it, not least in its relationship to negative-energy solutions to the wave equation. Post-war, it was largely displaced by what I shall call the 'standard formalism', dependent, among other things, on normal-ordering. A much better explanation is provided by the 'two complex structures' viewpoint, as first introduced by Irving Segal: the one ('natural') kind of complex numbers at the level of covariant, local fields; and the other ('particle') complex numbers at the level of the one-particle Hilbert space and Fock space. The former is local, the latter non-local: therein lies the fundamental difference between relativistic and non-relativistic quantum theory.

Abstract:This essay traces the history of three interconnected strands. Firstly, changes in the concept of number, secondly, the study of the qualities of number, which evolved into number theory, and thirdly, the nature of mathematics itself, from early Greek mathematics to the 20th century. These were embedded in philosophical shifts, from the classical Greek ontologies through increasing pragmatism to formalism and logical positivism. Given that Goedel demonstrated the limitations of the latter as a foundation for mathematics, this essay explores phenomenology and Lakatosian ideas, which together offer a more sound epistemological and ontological basis for mathematics and a methodology for mathematical <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://development.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> question also then arises of the possible resurrection of earlier, neglected mathematical projects, including widening the domain of number theory to include integer qualities revealed in the growth of mathematics in general, which has predominantly been the growth of quantitative mathematics or logistike, the complement of arithmetike in classical Greece.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with α- and D-negative imaginary systems. The definition of α-negative imaginary transfer functions is firstly introduced. Then, the relationship between negative imaginary and α-negative imaginary transfer functions is studied. By means of the generalised inverse, an α-negative imaginary lemma is proposed to test the α-negative imaginary property of transfer functions. Also, a necessary and sufficient condition is provided for the α-stability of interconnection of negative imaginary systems. A state-feedback controller design condition is established such that the resulting system is α-negative imaginary. Moreover, the concept of α-negative imaginary transfer functions is extended to that of D-negative imaginary transfer functions. Finally, the developed results are illustrated by numerical examples.

Abstract:The history of the theory of linear forms in logarithms is well known. We shall briefly sketch only some of the moments connected with new technical progress and important for our article. This theory was originated by pioneer works of A.O. Gelfond (see, for example, [5, 6]); with the help of the ideas which arose in connection with the solution of 7-th Hilbert problem (construction of auxiliary functions, extrapolation of zeros and small values), the bounds for the homogenous linear forms in two logarithms were proved. In the middle of the sixties A. Baker, [1], using auxiliary functions in several complex variables, for the first time obtained bounds for linear forms in any number of logarithms, both in the homogenous and non-homogenous cases. All further development of the theory is connected with improvements of these bounds. So N.I. Feldman introduced the so-called binomial polynomials in the construction of the auxiliary function, and due to this the dependence of the bounds on the coefficients of the linear forms was improved. The Kummer theory was used by A. Baker and H. Stark, [2], to improve the dependence of the estimates on the parameters related to the algebraic numbers appearing as arguments of the logarithms. The further improvements of this dependence are connected with the introduction of bounds for the number of zeros of polynomials on algebraic groups in works of G. Wüstholz. [14], P. Philippon and M. Waldschmidt, [11], A. Baker and G. Wüstholz, [3].

Linear Algebra and its Applications

Abstract:The nonnegative rank of a nonnegative matrix is the minimum number of nonnegative rank-one factors needed to reconstruct it exactly. The problem of determining this rank and computing the corresponding nonnegative factors is difficult; however it has many potential applications, e.g., in data mining and graph theory. In particular, it can be used to characterize the minimal size of any extended reformulation of a given polytope. In this paper, we introduce and study a related quantity, called the restricted nonnegative rank. We show that computing this quantity is equivalent to a problem in computational geometry, and fully characterize its computational complexity. This in turn sheds new light on the nonnegative rank problem, and in particular allows us to provide new improved lower bounds based on its geometric interpretation. We apply these results to slack matrices and linear Euclidean distance matrices and obtain counter-examples to two conjectures of Beasley and Laffey, namely we show that the nonnegative rank of linear Euclidean distance matrices is not necessarily equal to their dimension, and that the rank of a matrix is not always greater than the nonnegative rank of its square.
