Abstract:We construct split anti-cyclotomic Euler systems for Galois representations attached to certain RACSDC automorphic representations on the group $\mathrm{GL}_n\times\mathrm{GL}_{n+1}$. As a result, we make progress towards certain rank 1 cases of the Beilinson--Bloch--Kato conjecture for those representations.

Abstract:Let $\rho$ be a conjugate-symplectic, geometric representation of the Galois group of a CM field. Under the assumption that $\rho$ is automorphic, even-dimensional, and of minimal regular Hodge--Tate type, we construct an Euler system for $\rho$ in the sense of forthcoming work of Jetchev--Nekovar--Skinner. The construction is based on Theta cycles as introduced in a previous paper, following works of Kudla and Liu on arithmetic theta series on unitary Shimura varieties; it relies on a certain modularity hypothesis for those theta series. Under some ordinariness assumptions, one can attach to $\rho$ a p-adic L-function. By recent results of Liu and the author, and the theory of Jetchev--Nekovar--Skinner, we deduce the following (unconditional) result under mild assumptions: if the p-adic L-function of $\rho$ vanishes to order 1 at the centre, then the Selmer group of $\rho$ has rank 1, generated by the class of an algebraic cycle. This confirms a case of the p-adic Beilinson--Bloch--Kato conjecture.

Abstract:We construct a new anticyclotomic Euler system (in the sense of Jetchev-Nekovar-Skinner) for the Galois representation $V_{f,\chi}$ attached to a newform $f$ of weight $k\geq 2$ twisted by an anticyclotomic Hecke character $\chi$. We then show some arithmetic applications of the constructed Euler system, including new results on the Bloch-Kato conjecture in ranks zero and one, and a divisibility towards the Iwasawa-Greenberg main conjecture for $V_{f,\chi}$. In particular, in the case where the base-change of $f$ to our imaginary quadratic field has root number $+1$ and $\chi$ has higher weight (which implies that the complex $L$-function $L(V_{f,\chi},s)$ vanishes at the center), our results show that the Bloch-Kato Selmer group of $V_{f,\chi}$ is nonzero, and if a certain distinguished class $\kappa_{f,\chi}$ is nonzero, then the Selmer group is one-dimensional. Such applications to the Bloch-Kato conjecture were left wide open by the earlier approaches using Heegner cycles and/or Beilinson-Flach classes. Our construction is based instead on a generalisation of the Gross-Kudla-Schoen diagonal cycles.

An Euler system for the adjoint of a modular form

Abstract:We construct an Euler system for the adjoint Galois representation of a modular form, using motivic cohomology classes arising from Hilbert modular surfaces. We use this Euler system to give an upper bound for the Selmer group of the adjoint representation over the cyclotomic Zp-extension, which agrees with the predictions of the Iwasawa main conjecture up to powers of p and the augmentation ideal.

Abstract:We define and study a collection of special cycles on certain non-PEL Shimura varieties for $U(2,1) \times U(1,1)$ that appear naturally in the context of the recent conjectures of Gan, Gross and Prasad on restrictions of automorphic forms for unitary groups and conjectural generalizations of the Gross--Zagier formula. We prove a combinatorial formula expressing the Galois action in terms of the distance function on the Bruhat--Tits buildings for these groups. In addition, we calculate explicitly the Hecke polynomial appearing in the congruence relation conjectured by Blasius and Rogawski. Using methods and recent results of Koskivirta, we prove the congruence relation in this case. Finally, using the action of the local Hecke algebra on the Bruhat--Tits building, we establish explicit relations (distribution relations) between the Hecke action and the Galois action on the special cycles. These relations are key for a work in progress by the author on constructing a new Euler system from these cycles and using it to prove instances of the Bloch{Kato{ Beilinson conjecture for certain Galois representations associated to automorphic forms on unitary groups.

Abstract:Let $\pi$ traverse a sequence of cuspidal automorphic representations of GL(2) with large prime level, unramified central character and bounded infinity type. For G either of the groups GL(1) or PGL(2), let H(G) denote the assertion that subconvexity holds for G-twists of the adjoint $L$-function of $\pi$, with polynomial dependence upon the conductor of the twist. We show that H(GL(1)) implies H(PGL(2)). In geometric terms, H(PGL(2)) corresponds roughly to an instance of arithmetic quantum unique ergodicity with a power savings in the error term, H(GL(1)) to the special case in which the relevant sequence of measures is tested against an Eisenstein series.

Abstract:In the framework of infinite ergodic theory, we derive equidistribution results for suitable weighted sequences of cusp points of Hecke triangle groups encoded by group elements of constant word length with respect to a set of natural generators. This is a generalization of the corresponding results for the modular group, for which we rely on advanced results from infinite ergodic theory and transfer operator techniques developed for AFN-maps.

Abstract:We study how Rankin-Selberg periods interact with integral structures in spherical Whittaker type representations. Using this representation-theoretic framework, we show that the local Euler factors appearing in the construction of the motivic Rankin-Selberg Euler system for a product of modular forms are integrally optimal; i.e. any construction of this type with any choice of integral input data would give local factors appearing in tame norm relations at $p$ which are integrally divisible by the Euler factor $\mathcal{P}_p^{'}(\mathrm{Frob}_p^{-1})$ modulo $p-1$.

Abstract:It was shown by Kuperberg that the partition function of the square-ice model related to the quarter-turn symmetric alternating-sign matrices of even order is the product of two similar factors. We propose a square-ice model whose states are in bijection with the quarter-turn symmetric alternating-sign matrices of odd order, and show that the partition function of this model can be also written in a similar way. This allows to prove, in particular, the conjectures by Robbins related to the enumeration of the quarter-turn symmetric alternating-sign matrices.

Abstract:In this note we give the Kolyvagin recursion in cyclotomic Euler systens a new and universal interpretation with the help of the double complex method introduced by Anderson and further developed by Das and Ouyang. Namely, we show that the recursion satisfied by Kolyvagin classes is the specialization of a universal recursion independent of the chosen field satisfied by universal Kolyvagin classes in the group cohomology of the universal ordinary distribution a la Kubert. Further, we show by a method involving a variant of the diagonal shift operation introduced by Das that certain group cohomology classes belonging (up to sign) to a basis previously constructed by Ouyang also satisfy the universal recursion.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a conjecture, which generalises Euler's partition theorem involving odd parts and different parts for all moduli. We prove this conjecture for two family partitions. We give $q$-difference equations for the related generating function if the moduli is three. We provide new companions to Rogers-Ramanujan-Andrews-Gordon identities under this conjecture.

Abstract:We establish a theory of scalar Fourier coefficients for a class of non-holomorphic, automorphic forms on the quaternionic real Lie group $\mathrm{U}(2,n)$. By studying the theta lifts of holomorphic modular forms from $\mathrm{U}(1,1)$, we apply this theory to obtain examples of non-holomorphic cusp forms on $\mathrm{U}(2,n)$ whose Fourier coefficients are algebraic numbers.

Abstract:Generating functions for the number of commuting m-tuples in the symmetric groups are obtained. We define a natural sequence of ``orbifold Euler characteristics'' for a finite group G acting on a manifold X. Our definition generalizes the ordinary Euler characteristic of X/G and the string-theoretic orbifold Euler characteristic. Our formulae for commuting m-tuples underlie formulas that generalize the results of Macdonald and Hirzebruch-Hofer concerning the ordinary and string-theoretic Euler characteristics of symmetric products.

Abstract:We prove the existence of a cuspidal automorphic representation $\pi$ for $GL_{79}/\mathbf{Q}$ of level one and weight zero. We construct $\pi$ using symmetric power functoriality and a change of weight theorem, using Galois deformation theory. As a corollary, we construct the first known cuspidal cohomology classes in $H^*(GL_{n}(\mathbf{Z}),\mathbf{C})$ for any $n > 1$.

Abstract:We present a novel axiomatic framework for establishing horizontal norm relations in Euler systems that are built from pushforwards of classes in the motivic cohomology of Shimura varieties. This framework is uniformly applicable to the Euler systems of both algebraic cycles and Eisenstein classes. It also applies to non-spherical pairs of groups that fail to satisfy a local multiplicity one hypothesis, and thus lie beyond the reach of existing methods. A key application of this work is the construction of an Euler system for the spinor Galois representations arising in the cohomology of Siegel modular varieties of genus three, which is undertaken in two companion articles.
