Abstract:We give a number of equivalent conditions (including weak centrality) for a general $C^*$-algebra to have the centre-quotient property. We show that every $C^*$-algebra $A$ has a largest weakly central ideal $J_{wc}(A)$. For an ideal $I$ of a unital $C^*$-algebra $A$, we find a necessary and sufficient condition for a central element of $A/I$ to lift to a central element of $A$. This leads to a characterisation of the set $V_A$ of elements of an arbitrary $C^*$-algebra $A$ which prevent $A$ from having the centre-quotient property. The complement $\mathrm{CQ}(A):= A \setminus V_A$ always contains $Z(A)+J_{wc}(A)$ (where $Z(A)$ is the centre of $A$), with equality if and only if $A/J_{wc}(A)$ is abelian. Otherwise, $\mathrm{CQ}(A)$ fails spectacularly to be a $C^*$-subalgebra of $A$.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the centre - quotient property (abbreviated as CQ property) of C* - algebras and its relationship with weak centrality. Specifically, the authors explore the following points: 1. **Definitions and equivalent conditions**: The authors present several equivalent conditions for a C* - algebra to have the CQ property, including weak centrality. These conditions are applicable not only to unital C* - algebras but also to non - unital C* - algebras. 2. **The largest weak - central ideal**: For any C* - algebra \(A\), the authors prove the existence of a largest weak - central ideal \(J_{wc}(A)\) and give an explicit description of this ideal. 3. **The lifting problem of central elements**: The authors study, given an ideal \(I\), how to lift central elements from the quotient algebra \(A/I\) to central elements in the original algebra \(A\). This involves a necessary and sufficient condition. 4. **The set of CQ elements**: The authors define the concept of CQ elements and study the set \(\text{CQ}(A)\) of these elements. They prove that \(\text{CQ}(A)\) contains the sum set of the centre \(Z(A)\) and the largest weak - central ideal \(J_{wc}(A)\), as well as some other specific types of elements. 5. **Properties in special cases**: The authors also discuss properties in some special cases. For example, when \(A/J_{wc}(A)\) is a commutative algebra, the conditions for \(\text{CQ}(A)\) to be equal to \(Z(A)+J_{wc}(A)\). Through these studies, the authors aim to gain an in - depth understanding of the centre - quotient property of C* - algebras and its relationship with other important properties (such as weak centrality), thereby providing a theoretical basis for further research in this field.
