Abstract:Chalcogenide materials are an important class of amorphous glassy semiconductors and attracted several researchers due to their practical applications in several fields like phase-change memories, photovoltaics, detectors, photonics, lasers, and optoelectronic devices, etc. Here in this review, we have mainly focused on germanium-based chalcogenide thin films and their various applications. As a fourfold coordinated semiconductor, germanium mostly affects the network connectivity, glass strength, and hardness of the system. As an additional material, germanium causes excellent tuning, and tailoring of several properties of the host materials in a significant manner. So, the present review attempts to bring together the currently available research on some of the binary, ternary, and quaternary alloys of Ge-chalcogenide materials and their applications in several optoelectronic devices. The progress report is not only concentrated on a better understanding of their physical properties but also connected with their bonding, compositions, the structure of germanium-carrying chalcogenide materials. The dominant properties like structural, electronic, thermal, and optical properties specific to this Ge-chalcogenides are presented. Eventually, several applications in optoelectronic, batteries, sensors, memory devices, etc. of germanium-based chalcogenide material are also discussed.
