Abstract:In this paper, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the doubleness all of the eigenvalues, except the lowest, periodic and anti-periodic problems for Hill's equation in terms of the complex-valued potential $q(x)$.

Abstract:We construct two explicit examples of Hill’s equations with complex-valued potentials such that the algebraic multiplicity of some (anti)periodic eigenvalue E E equals 1 + 2 p i 1+2p_{i} with p i ≥ 1 p_{i}\geq 1 , where p i p_{i} denotes the immovable part of E E as a Dirichlet eigenvalue. These examples confirm a phenomena about Hill’s equations in (Gesztesy and Weikard, Acta Math. 176 (1996), 73–107).

Abstract:In this article we obtain the asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the self-adjoint operator generated by a system of Sturm-Liouville equations with summable coefficients and the quasiperiodic boundary conditions. Then using these asymptotic formulas, we find the conditions on the potential for which the number of gaps in the spectrum of the Hill's operator with matrix potential is finite.

Abstract:We study Hill's differential equation with potential expressed by elliptic functions which arises in some problems of physics and mathematics. Analytical method can be applied to study the local properties of the potential in asymptotic regions of the parameter space. The locations of the saddle points of the potential are determined, the locations of turning points can be determined too when they are close to a saddle point. Combined with the quadratic differential associated with the differential equation, these local data give a qualitative explanation for the asymptotic eigensolutions obtained recently. A relevant topic is about the generalisation of Floquet theorem for ODE with doubly-periodic elliptic function coefficient which bears some new features compared to the case of ODE with real valued singly-periodic coefficient. Beyond the local asymptotic regions, global properties of the elliptic potential are studied using numerical method.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the spectrum of the complex Hill operator L = (d2)(dx2) + q(x, tau) in L-2(R, C) with the Darboux-Treibich-Verdier potential q(x, t) := Sigma(3)(k=0)n(k)(n(k) + 1) P(x+ z(0) +omega(k)/2; tau), where n(k) is an element of Z(>= 0) with max n(k) >= 1 and z(0) is an element of C is chosen such that q(x, tau) has no singularities on R. For any fixed tau is an element of iR(>0), we give a necessary and sufficient condition on (n(0), n(1), n(2), n(3)) to guarantee that the spectrum sigma(L) is sigma(L) = (-infinity, E-2g] boolean OR [E2g-1, E2g-2] boolean OR ... boolean OR [E-1, E-0], E-j is an element of R, and hence generalizes Ince's remarkable result in 1940 for the Lame potential to the Darboux-Treibich-Verdier potential. We also determine the number of (anti)periodic eigenvalues in each bounded interval (E2j-1, E2j-2), which generalizes the recent result by Haese-Hill et al., who studied the Lame case n(1) = n(2) = n(3) = 0.
Galoisian approach to complex oscillation theory of some Hill equations

Abstract:We apply Kovacic's algorithm from differential Galois theory to show that all complex non-oscillatory solutions (finite exponential of convergence of zeros) of certain Hill equations considered by Bank and Laine using Nevanlinna theory must be Liouvillian solutions. That is, solutions are obtainable by suitable differential field extensions construction. In particular, we have established a full correspondence between solutions of non-oscillatory type and Liouvillian solutions for a particular Hill equation. Explicit closed-form solutions are obtained via both methods for this Hill equation whose potential has four exponential functions in the Bank-Laine theory. The differential equation is a periodic form of biconfluent Heun equation. We further show that these Liouvillian solutions exhibit novel single and double orthogonality and a Fredholm integral equation over suitable integration regions in $\mathbf{C}$ that mimic single/double orthogonality for the corresponding Liouvillian solutions of the Lamé and Whittaker-Hill equations, discovered by Whittaker and Ince almost a century ago.

Abstract:In this paper, we study positive periodic solutions to the repulsive singular perturbations of the Hill equations. It is proved that such a perturbation problem has at least two positive periodic solutions when the anti-maximum principle holds for the Hill operator and the perturbation is superlinear at infinity. The proof relies on a nonlinear alternative of Leray–Schauder type and on Krasnoselskii fixed point theorem on compression and expansion of cones.

Abstract:We consider the convergence problem of an inexact Cayley transform method for solving inverse eigenvalue problems with multiple eigenvalues. Under the nonsingularity assumption of the relative generalized Jacobian matrix at the solution c * ?> , a convergence analysis covering both the distinct and multiple eigenvalues cases is provided and the superlinear convergence is proved. Moreover, numerical experiments are given in the last section and comparisons with the Cayley transform method are made.

Abstract:Using the relation between the Hill's equations and the Ermakov-Pinney equations established by Zhang [ ], we will give some interesting lower bounds of rotation numbers of Hill's equations. Based on the Birkhoff normal forms and the Moser twist theorem, we will prove that two classes of nonlinear, scalar, time-periodic, Newtonian equations will have twist periodic solutions, one class being regular and another class being singular.

Abstract:Consider the discrete 1D Schrödinger operator on $\Z$ with an odd $2k$ periodic potential $q$. For small potentials we show that the mapping: $q\to $ heights of vertical slits on the quasi-momentum domain (similar to the Marchenko-Ostrovski maping for the Hill operator) is a local isomorphism and the isospectral set consists of $2^k$ distinct potentials. Finally, the asymptotics of the spectrum are determined as $q\to 0$.

Symmetry Integrability and Geometry Methods and Applications

Abstract:Lamé's differential equation is a linear differential equation of the second order with a periodic coefficient involving the Jacobian elliptic function depending on the modulus , and two additional parameters and . This differential equation appears in several applications, for example, the motion of coupled particles in a periodic potential. Stability and existence of periodic solutions of Lamé's equations is determined by the value of its Hill discriminant . The Hill discriminant is compared to an explicitly known quantity including explicit error bounds. This result is derived from the observation that Lamé's equation with can be solved by hypergeometric functions because then the elliptic function reduces to the hyperbolic tangent function. A connection relation between hypergeometric functions then allows the approximation of the Hill discriminant by a simple expression. In particular, one obtains an asymptotic approximation of when the modulus tends to .

Bifurcation of double eigenvalues for Aharonov-Bohm operators with a moving pole

Abstract:We study double eigenvalues of Aharonov-Bohm operators with Dirichlet boundary conditions in planar domains containing the origin. We focus on the behavior of double eigenvalues when the potential's circulation is a fixed half-integer number and the operator's pole is moving on straight lines in a neighborhood of the origin. We prove that bifurcation occurs if the pole is moving along straight lines in a certain number of cones with positive measure. More precise information is given for symmetric domains; in particular, in the special case of the disk, any eigenvalue is double if the pole is located at the centre, but there exists a whole neighborhood where it bifurcates into two distinct branches.

Abstract:Let $H = -d^2/dx^2 + q(x)$, $x \in \mathbb{R}$, where $q(x)$ is a periodic potential, and suppose that the spectrum $\sigma(H)$ of $H$ is the positive semi-axis $[0, \infty)$. In the case where $q(x)$ is real-valued (and locally square-integrable) a well-known result of G. Borg states that $q(x)$ must vanish almost everywhere. However, as it was first observed by M.G. Gasymov, there is an abundance of complex-valued potentials for which $\sigma(H) = [0, \infty)$. In this article we conjecture a characterization of all complex-valued potentials whose spectrum is $[0, \infty)$. We also present an analog of Borg's result for complex potentials.
